From the Pastor’s Desk I need to begin with an important, practical update. As you know, we are still waiting for Cardinal Cupich’s decision on our new parish name (we should receive news of it within a few days). Since the time that we united as a new parish on Oct. 1st last year, our temporary & unofficial name has been Saints Beatrice & Maria Goretti Parish. The key word there is “unofficial.” You see, there are many things that we cannot change until we have our new official name, and one of those things is our parish bank accounts. So, we still have separate bank accounts for St. Beatrice Parish and St. Maria Goretti Parish – and the only thing that has been different since Oct. 1st is that the funds in both accounts now all go to one place: our new parish. But the important point is: we still have separate accounts under two different names.

I bring this up because our parish bank recently let us know that they cannot continue to accept checks that are made out to “Saints Beatrice & Maria Goretti,” since we do not have any accounts with that name (as I said, we have separate accounts for “St. Beatrice” and “St. Maria Goretti”). So, if you write checks to our parish, please do not make them out to “Saints Beatrice & Maria Goretti.” Instead, make them out to either “St. Beatrice” or “St. Maria Goretti.” If you put both names on your checks, the bank might not accept them because our bank accounts do not use that name.

And here is another very important point: Even after we receive our new official name, please continue to make checks to either “St. Beatrice” or “St. Maria Goretti.” Do not make checks out to our new parish name when we first receive it. The reason for this is that it will take us some time to set up a new tax ID, new bank accounts, etc. So, until all of that is completed, please just continue to make checks to either “St. Beatrice” or “St. Maria Goretti.” I will let you know when the new accounts are ready, but that will likely not be for some time. Again, please do not use “Saints Beatrice & Maria Goretti,” and do not use our new parish name right away.

I’m sorry for the confusion, but there is still a lot that needs to be done in terms of uniting our parishes. Even though we united on Oct. 1st last year, there are many practical changes that cannot take place until we have our new name. But this is all the more reason why I encourage everyone to consider donating to our parish online. You can always do one-time donations online, or even set up recurring donations (so you never need to think about it!) And if you do online donations, then as far as I know, you won’t need to do anything different once we get our new name and we change our bank accounts – you should just be able to continue to donate with PayPal on our parish website, and we at the parish office are the ones who will register the new bank accounts with PayPal. So, if you would ever like to donate online, please go to www.stbeatriceparish.org/donate.

Finally, I don’t want this whole bulletin article to be about money, so I want to make sure to mention two important (and related) things taking place this week. This Monday, Jan. 18th our nation celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Dr. King, of course, was the great civil rights leader who worked, marched, and protested peacefully to help unite people of all races and beliefs. And this week our Church observes the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, as we pray that all the denominations of Christianity can find more common ground and be united one day. In this coming week, then, let us pray and ask God to show us how we can each be instruments of His peace to everyone around us.

St. Beatrice & St. Maria Goretti, pray for us. May God bless you.

    Fr. Rob

  • PAGE THREE Second Sunday In Ordinary Time:

In the Gospel today, Jesus asks, “What are you looking for?” Often we are looking for happiness in selfish ways, but we find that

when we look for ways to make others happy, it is then that we truly become happy.

As you place your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul poor box, know that

you are a sign of God’s love to those who are suffering, and you give them reason to

    believe and trust.

    FEAST OF FAITH The Greeting

At several points during the liturgy, the presider greets us with the words, “The Lord be with you.” These simple words are not like the greetings that we exchange all day long—our “good mornings,” our “hellos” and “how are yous.” This liturgical greeting has roots deep in the Old Testament. In the book of Ruth, the words “the Lord be with you” are spoken by Boaz to the harvesters who are laboring in his fields (2:4); in the book of Judges, an angel speaks similar words to Gideon (6:12), where they are words of promise: for soon Gideon will lead his oppressed people to victory and freedom. For us, the words become a greeting of peace, a prayer that the Lord will indeed be with us, and a reminder of his promise to be with us always, to the end of the world (Matthew 28:20). Our response—“And with your spirit”—returns to the presider this prayer for the Lord’s presence. As we know from the scriptures, a prayer for the Lord’s presence is no small thing, for when God comes in our midst, God brings healing, grace, and challenge. God’s presence transforms us. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Speak Lord, We Are Listening In today’s first reading God keeps calling out in the night to a sleeping boy. Neither the boy, Samuel, nor his teacher, Eli, understands who is calling. But God’s persistence convinces them. Samuel is then ready—not ready yet to do anything, but ready to listen. “Speak, for your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:10). In the Gospel Jesus is out teaching. Various people notice him and begin to gather around. They soon become disciples and, like the young Samuel, are ready—not ready yet to do anything, but ready to listen. “Speak,” they say, “we are listening.” God’s voice is always with us, awake or asleep. It swirls around us like fog on a waterfront, enveloping us, gently urging us to wake up, to listen. Awareness of the voice comes first; then willingness to listen; then, in time, the decision to act, to live according to God’s word. Let’s ask today for the ability to keep our ears open so we don’t miss God’s voice. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

    What We’re Learning

7th Grade (Saturdays) We relate to the three divine persons of the Trinity in different ways. We are children of the Father, brothers and sisters of Jesus, the Son, and the temple of the Holy Spirit. God gives us the free loving gift of his own life through grace, which is a participation in the life of the Trinity. We learned about the different titles of Jesus that we find in the Scriptures like: Christ and Messiah which means “anointed one”, Rabbi meaning teacher, or even just, Jesus, which means “God saves”. The church has used these and many other titles for Jesus throughout her history, but no matter what title of Jesus we use, he will respond to us with love and grace.

8th Grade (Saturdays) We learned about the beginning of our church and the creeds that define it. As a class, each student reviewed and studied various charities to inform them of the various needs that exist and why, and then we as a class select a charity to donate to.
