Times are tough now, but we have been through difficult times before. The Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918 and the Great Depression of the 1930s stretched capabilities of St. Anthony Hospital and its staff to the utmost limits – physically, emotionally and financially. Yet the focus on our foundress Mother Augustine Giesen’s mission to give care and compassion for the sick, regardless of their ability to pay, never wavered.

Through the burdens of plague, war and poverty, then through growth of the city and expansion of the hospital, the Sisters remainedirrevocably committed to bringing compas-sion and healing care to our community.

As we navigate our current health crisis and the uncertainties of the times, SSM Health St. Anthony continues to meet the challenges and serve all who come, moving our Mission forward, just as would our founding Sisters.

We continue to advocate for mask mandates or extension of existing mask mandates in order to curb the trend in exposures to the coronavirus in our communities. With the flu season approaching, having the flu vaccination is more important than ever, as is adherence to masking, social distancing and vigilant handwashing.

I am so proud of our courageous Saints in Action who are rising to the occasion to care for our community during this unprecedented time.

We are proud to support all those on the front lines who are continuing the highest level of care for our patients. The Saints Urgent Response Fund was created to provide funding for areas of greatest need (such as ensuring necessary supplies and equipment for frontline workers, expanding testing capacity or caring for the urgent needs of patients).

Darin Miller and David Neff Development pledged a $100,000 matching grant to the Saints Urgent Response Fund, effectively doubling all donations to the fund through the end of 2020. Response to the matching offer has been tremendous (currently at $85,000), but significant donations are still needed to reach the goal with approxi-mately 90 days remaining.

We’re soon to enter a season of celebrations and gatherings. It’s important to take precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones. Events - even small gatherings - are among the top causes for the spread of COVID-19, so it’s important to remain vigilant.

The best, safest course of action is to stay home. When possible, use digital means like Facetime and Zoom to connect with loved ones during the pandemic. Spread love, not germs!

Cancer Institute Opens“When you are diagnosed with cancer, it is a rude awakening, but the oncology staff are so professional and caring that you are relieved and confident that you are in the best care ever. Thank you, St. Anthony!” – Grateful Patient

Thanks to the generous support of our donors, the new andexpanded Frank C. Love Cancer Institute opened on February 14, 2020.

Improvements include:

Third Floor Move - Moved medical oncology from the ground floor to the 3rd floor of the existing facility

Light and Healing - A patient-friendly and convenient space with natural light and a healing environment

Improved Chemotherapy Areas - Nearly doubled chemotherapy and infusion areas, adding private & semi-private spaces

More Space - More than doubled the medical oncology space

Exam Rooms - More than doubled the patient exam rooms from 7 to 15, so we can say yes to more patients and decrease wait time

By offering exceptional care and comfort during a difficult time, SSM Health St. Anthony hopes to offer families a home away from home with the Frank C. Love Cancer Institute.

SSM Health named to 2020 “HealthCare’s Most Wired”SSM Health has been named to the 2020 “HealthCare’s Most Wired” list, marking the seventh straight year our organization has received this industry recognition. Previously awarded by the American Hospital Association, the recognition is bestowed by the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME). SSM Health Integrated Health Technologies has received this honor every year since 2014.

The mission of the CHIME “Healthcare’s Most Wired” program is to elevate the health and care of communities around the world by encouraging the optimal use of information technology. The program does this by conducting an annual survey to identify, recognize, and certify the adoption, implementation, and use of information technology by healthcare provider organizations. The results are intended to improve patient safety and outcomes by driving change in the healthcare IT industry.

SSM Health St. Anthony Foundation was recently blessed with a gift of $10,000 creating the Brendon McLarty Memorial Asthma Fund that will provide asthma medication and supplies for our low income and uninsured patients.

The fund’s namesake, Brendon McLarty, suffered a fatal asthma attack at age 16 on the last day of his sophomore year in high school. In celebration of his life, his family started a foundation to help fight asthma through education and awareness. In three short years, they have developed educational programs, partnered with several children’s hospitals to provide “asthma kits” for patients and advocated for legislation to equip schools with asthma education programs and critical medical supplies.

Asthma is a lung disease that affects 7 million children and 16 million adults in the U.S. – and kills more than 3,500 each year. Most cases of uncontrolled asthma are due to lack of access to the expensive medications and proper education. This generous gift will help provide a safer and better quality of life for our patients in need.
