Dear Faithful: “BUILDING UP THE BODY OF CHRIST’ We offer our prayers and respect to His Eminence Metropolitan IAKOVOS of Chicago as we observe and celebrate our Metro-politan’s Nameday on October 23rd. May His Eminence be blessed with many years of good health, joy and abundant love. Also, we extend our deep respect and Nameday Greetings to our Beloved Archbishop DEMETRIOS, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and His Grace Bishop DEMETRIOS of Mokissos. Many years of good health and blessings! We embrace this Fall Season with the experience of Christian STEWARD-SHIP...TIME, TALENT and TREASURE. Let’s fulfill our 2013 love offering to the Parish Ministries and gift our 2014 Stewardship Promise for the support of God’s work in our Church community. Be mindful that “WE ARE FAMILY” and your sup-port blesses all your Brothers and Sisters in Christ. God loves a Cheerful Giver! We believe that in Orthodoxy we have the Fullness of the Truth. We have the awe-some responsibility and the great commission to share it with all people. All aspects of our parish must be seen as Apostolic. As Orthodox stewards and faithful believers of Christ; we are called to incorporate the Christian mission in all aspects of our com-munity life and personal lives. YOUR ACTIONS REFLECT YOUR LOVE OF GOD. Let us ALL go forth and serve the Lord with Joy, Peace and Christian Harmony. In His Vineyard,

Rev. Fr. James Dokos PROTOPRESBYTER

QUESTION:

People are having tough times financially these

days in society. What ways can the Church and Her

people offer to bring hope and some comfort?

(T.A.)

ANSWER:

Read these words of St. John Chrysostom:

“Lift up and stretch out your hands, not to

heaven, but to the poor; for if you stretch forth your

hands to the poor, you have reached the summit of

heaven; but if you lift up your hands in prayer with-

out sharing with the poor, it is worth nothing. Every

family should have a room where Christ is welcome

in the person of the hungry and thirsty stranger.

The poor are a greater temple than the sanctuary;

this altar, the poor, you can raise up anywhere, on

any street, and offer liturgy at any hour.”

Offering “HOSPITALITY” of love, care, friendship

and outreach is a Gift of life; especially those who

suffer in their existence.

The question is always asked… What can the

Church do? Well, some news. YOU ARE THE

CHURCH! Give of yourself, your time, your re-

sources whatever they may be. Offer a cup of cof-

fee, a meal, clothing…offer your true concern and

Christian Love and the Truth of Giving will be a real-

ity.

Our Patriarchate, Holy Greek Orthodox Archdiocese

and Holy Metropolis’ of America and our local Par-

ishes all outreach, but each of us are empowered to

be like Christ…to serve and to comfort.

Try it, for when you outreach as a Church member…

you also do it for Christ. May you hear His Words of

WELL DONE – WELL DONE!

QUESTION:

I have noticed our Priest wearing many different

colored vestments. Is there a reason or tradition

our Clergy follow? (Stefanos)

ANSWER:

Everything we see and hear in our Greek Orthodox

Church has a meaning. Vestment colors are an

Ecclesiastical tradition as such. Gold/White for

Sacraments, Theophany and Feastday of the Lord.

Purple for Lent and Holy Week. Blue for Feasts of

the Virgin Mary. Red for Feasts of the Martyrs and

Pascha. White also for Funerals, Church Services

and Sacraments.

QUESTION:

I ponder the thought of my mother who displays

her love for the Church always; but often does not

love those around her, especially her family. What

am I to think? (Confused)

ANSWER:

It’s a fact…no Orthodox Christian can manage to

love God without loving other people as well. This

seems true for us all. In the first Letter of Saint

John: “He who does not love his brother who he

has seen, cannot love God whom he has not

seen.” (1 John 4:20) The love of others (family,

friends, strangers) is an integral part of our love for

God.

Think about this: All love comes from God and

finds its ultimate fulfillment in God! The more we

love…the more Christ is in our midst. Share with

your mom your true Christ-like love, nurture her,

embrace her and see her love grow for others just

as a flower grows into a beautiful sweet-scented

gift from God. Indeed, it will take some work, some

time, some effort, but see the beautiful gardens…

it’s worth the effort. Love perfects all!

ASK Father Jim

Parish Council News

On August 11 the newly-formed Parish Garden Club had its get-together meeting. There were about a dozen eager gardeners present discussing many ways to beautify the Church grounds.. Our Chairman Nick Paterakos will be calling a planning meeting. If you are inter-ested, you can sign up at the Outreach table after Church or contact me or Nick. Sounds like fun!

Since I am writing this in late August, you will by now have experienced the “Liturgy at the Farm” and mini-fest and the Golf Outing. There are many things happening, so get in-volved.

The Diocese will be holding its Clergy/Laity meeting in Sioux City, Iowa on October 2-5. Mary Ann Langas, Steve Koulogeorge and I will be attending as delegates representing the laity from SS Peter and Paul, so wish us well. If you have any questions or suggestions please see one of us and we will carry your ideas to Iowa.

Keep the date of November 24 open for the Fall Parish General Assembly.

Fr. Panagiotis Boznos has been a wonderful addition to our Parish and we are glad he is here.

The passing of Jim Allans wasn’t posted anywhere so was not seen by most of us. Jim was one of the founders of SS Peter and Paul, was a past-President and faithful contributor to all that we did here. His obit, in the Iowa Gazette requests donations to SS Peter and Paul building fund. Rest in peace Jim.

Please keep the less fortunate and struggling in your prayers and your hands on your wallets to open them for busboys, the homeless, the Salvation Army or any others who are needy.

Faithfully, Jim Gottreich Parish Council President [email protected]

Stewardship

“Have we forgotten what Stewardship means?”

Since October is “Stewardship Month” – after the beginning of the Ecclesiastical Year in September; the end of Summer Vacations; the beginning of Church School and when we, as a Parish family, kick-off next year’s Stewardship “Campaign” and remind ourselves to complete our 2013 pledges, if we haven’t already done so – we are called upon to ask ourselves: “How much should I pledge for my Annual Stewardship to the Parish ?”

Perhaps some of us have forgotten that our Parish decided decades ago to abandon the concept of “dues” and embrace the Orthodox teaching of “stewardship”. Our forefa-thers and foremothers concluded that the answer to the question of how much to give rests within our own hearts; that giving to the Church should be “sacrificial”; and that the act of giving to the Church should not be viewed in terms of “how much does the Parish need to meet its budget?” Rather instead, in terms of “How much can I give after taking care of the needs of my family?”

Those who came before us and established this Parish understood that financial Stewardship giving is an act of gratitude to the Lord for all of the gifts we enjoy, and that this act of giving serves our spiritual growth rather than simply helping the Parish meet its budget. They recognized that an Orthodox Parish should support itself exclusively from the voluntary financial Stewardship of its Stewards. They decided that this Parish should be known as a Parish that attempts to live by the teachings of the Church with re-spect (for example, to gambling) and other activities that detract from the Orthodox teaching regarding Stewardship. Activities that enhance fellowship and community build-ing must conform to the concept of stewardship, properly understood. As Rev. Father Paul Wesche writes, in The Theology of Stewardship in Light of Orthodox Tradition (Light & Life Publishing, 1990):

“It is imperative that we understand the theological and spiritual context of stewardship for in fact, the concept of stewardship takes us to the heart of the Church’s mission and life. If we fail to understand our responsibility as stewards, we fail to be the Church. Therefore, any “program” undertaken by the Church must be submitted to the judgment of the mission of the Church and must be used in the service of Christian stewardship properly understood.”

Rather than looking to our existing budget our Stewardship goals should aim higher – and should form the basis for growing our Parish Ministries to encompass all of the things that a Christian Parish should be doing for our own salvation and for that of our neighbors. We need to expand and institute programs to “feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the sick, and those in prison” and to obey the commandment of Pentecost to “bring the Gospel to all people”.

Youth Corner

SS. Peter & Paul Youth & Family Ministries I would like to thank all those families and young members of SS. Peter & Paul who joined us for the first meetings of our Youth and Family programs of the 2013-2014 year. It is wonderful to see such enthusiasm from the youngest members of Christ’s Church as they gather together to grow in faith, fellowship, and love. On, Saturday, September 21st the families of our youth ministries gathered together for a cookout on the front lawn following the Annual Blessing of the Animals. Everyone met for fellowship and to learn about the wonderful opportunities SS. Peter and Paul affords the younger members of our beloved parish.

Ministries

HOPE: The Hope Group had its first meeting on September 16th. It was delightful to meet the next generation of youth and to be with them as they begin to familiarize themselves with some of the fundamental aspects of Orthodox worship, such as making the Sign of the Cross, and kissing icons.

Faith/Love/Joy: We have not yet met officially, but are very excited for our first gathering on October 1st.

Jr. G.O.Y.A.: The Jr. GOYA held their first meeting and laid the foundation for the direction of the program, discussing and proposing future fellowship and outreach events. We had a great time using ice-breakers and playing games to establish and strengthen re-lationships with each other.

GOYA: Our GOYA met for the first time and discussed ways to strengthen the pro-gram. We placed a strong emphasis on the importance of the Church during the teenage years, and focused on taking ownership of both our own personal spiritual lives and the GOYA program as being central to a maturing faith in Christ.

Upcoming Events: Please check the website and the Youth Facebook page for upcoming events and informa-tion.

James (Iakovos) the Apostle, brother of Our Lord October 23 According to some, this Saint was a son of Joseph the Betrothed, born of the wife that the latter had before he was betrothed to the Ever-virgin. Hence he was the brother of the Lord, Who was also thought to be the son of Joseph (Matt. 13: 55). But some say that he was a nephew of Joseph, and the son of his brother Cleopas, who was also called Alphaeus and Mary his wife, who was the first cousin of the Theotokos. But even according to this genealogy, he was still called, according to the idiom of the Scriptures, the Lord's brother because of their kinship. This Iakovos is called the Less (Mark 15:4) by the Evangelists to distinguish him from Iakovos, the son of Zebedee, who was called the Great. He became the first Bishop of Jerusalem, elevated to this episcopal rank by the Apostles, according to Eusebius (Eccl. Hist., Book II: 23), and was called Obliah, that is, the Just, because of his great holiness and righteousness. Having ascended the crest of the Temple on the day of the Passover at the prompting of all, he bore testimony from there concerning his belief in Jesus, and he pro-claimed with a great voice that Jesus sits at the right hand of the great power of God and shall come again upon the clouds of heaven. On hearing this testimony, many of those present cried, "Hosanna to the Son of David." But the Scribes and Pharisees cried, "So, even the just one hath been led astray," and at the command of Ananias the high priest, the Apostle was cast down headlong from thence, then was stoned, and while he prayed for his slayers, his head was crushed by the wooden club wielded by a certain scribe. The first of the Catholic (General) Epistles written to the Jews in the Diaspora who believed in Christ was written by this Iakovos.

The Holy Great Martyr Demetrius the Myrrh-streamer October 26 Saint Demetrius was a Thessalonian, a most pious son of pious and noble parents, and a teacher of the Faith of Christ. When Maximian first came to Thessalonica in 290, he raised the Saint to the rank of Duke of Thessaly. But when it was discovered that the Saint was a Christian, he was arrested and kept bound in a bath-house. While the games were under way in the city, Maximian was a spectator there. A certain friend of his, a barbar-ian who was a notable wrestler, Lyaeus by name, waxing haughty because of the height and strength of his body, boasted in the stadium and challenged the citizens to a contest with him. All that fought with him were defeated. Seeing this, a certain youth named Nestor, aquaintance of Demetrius', came to the Saint in the bath-house and asked his blessing to fight Lyaeus single-handed. Receiving this blessing and sealing himself with the sign of the precious Cross, he presented himself in the stadium, and said, "O God of Demetrius, help me!" and straightway he engaged Lyaeus in combat and smote him with a mortal blow to the heart, leaving the for-mer boaster lifeless upon the earth. Maximian was sorely grieved over this, and when he learned who was the cause of this defeat, he commanded straightway and Demetrius was pierced with lances while he was yet in the bath-house, As for Nestor, Maximian commanded that he be slain with his own sword.
