SAINTS PHILIP AND JAMES EXTON, PENNSYLVANIA
August 23, 2020
Our beloved Grotto area c.1963. Clearly the passage of years changed much. We are blessed with
generous benefactors to be anticipating a better and safer setting for our Grotto in light of flooding problems. We are grateful to the memory of
Dottie Tuccio for the generous gifts that will make this permanent landscaping possible.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in the Lord, As a follow up to the news of last weeks Bulletin (see reprint below) please be advised that as of Labor Day, Monday, September 7th, our Sunday and Weekday schedule of celebrations of Holy Mass will change. In addition to the changes noted last week and reprinted below, please note that as of September 13 we will have four celebrations of Holy Mass on Sunday. These will be 8:30, 10:30 AM, 12 Noon, and 5:30 PM. In short the former 7:30 and 9 AM Masses will combine in an 8:30 AM Mass on Sunday. This will give SSPJ an 8:30 Mass, 7 days a week. The 6:30 AM Mass, Mon.-Fri. will be discontinued as of Sept. 4th. On that day, the First Friday of September, for the last time there will be two Masses at 6:30 and 8:30 AM. Please note that as of October there will be only one Mass on the First Friday at 8:30 AM. Some of you may remember that these changes were considered ten years ago and at that time my brother, Fr. Anthony Dieckhaus, began coming for the 7:30 AM and when he was no longer able we were fortunate to add an Augustinian Father which again extended the life of the 7:30. At the present time, however, the change seems prudent. If this change is really difficult for you please note that below is a listing of area Masses. As you will see some parishes still have earlier Mass each day. (The following is a reprint from last Sunday’s Bulletin) Please join me in thanking Fr. Quan Tran for his year of residence with us, while on the Faculty of Bishop Shanahan High School, and most recently, his year as our parochial Vicar here at P&J. Father Quan has been reassigned as Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, Morton, PA, effective August 28th, 2020. As you may know P&J was Fr. Quan’s first assignment following Ordination, this was with Msgr. Caufield. Our gratitude for his priestly presence in our midst and our very best wishes for him in his new assignment accompany him to Morton. Certainly, we have been enriched by his reverent celebrating of Holy Mass and his always practical and inspirational homilies. So many remember the children’s saying of twenty years ago: “Father Quan #1!” I’m sure now, as then, Father Quan is most grateful for all your goodness to him as we are for his being with us these past two years.. Due to the fact that Father Quan is not being replaced there will be adjustments published in the days ahead. As of now, the second vigil Mass of Saturday, at 5:30 PM, will not resume come October. As of September 13, the Sunday Mass Schedule will be as follows: VIGIL 4:00 PM; 8:30 AM; 10:30 AM; 12:00 Noon and 5:30 PM. We will have only one daily mass at 8:30 AM Monday through Saturday. The First Friday Mass in Chapel is discontinued. Please continue to pray for vocations to the Sacred Priesthood. Please note that some Mass Intentions have been changed to the closest date that was available. Please check the Mass Intentions for the Week in the bulletin for changes.

Music and Scripture Readings for Ss. Philip and James Masses Thank you to all of you who have been wearing face coverings and social distancing while in church. It is very important that we provide an opportunity for our parishioners to attend Holy Mass in person, but we must do this with the utmost care for all in attendance. As you are aware, we cannot have our Jour-ney Songs Hymnals in the pews at the current time; therefore, no usual access to our hymns and Scripture Readings. Due to the updates and directives from the CDC and guidelines from the Archdiocese during the current global pandemic, we will be discontinuing music at all Masses beginning in August until further notice. For those of you who would like to see and personally read the Scripture Readings for Sundays and each day, they are noted on our Parish Website under Today’s Read-ings. May God continue to bless you and your families as we pray for one another for an end to this Covid-19 Coronavirus.
Office for Life and Family The Annual Archdiocesan Wedding Anniversary Mass has been scheduled for Saturday, October 17, 2020 at 5:15 PM at the Cathedral Basilica of SS Peter and Paul, Philadelphia. This Mass will be celebrating, in particular, those couples marking their 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 year wedding anniversary milestones. Friends and Family are welcome and encouraged to attend. To RSVP go to www,phillycahtoliclife.org or call the Office for Life and Fmaily at 215-5897-0500. Spiritual Adoption Program. What is the Spiritual Adoption Program? It is very simples, Participants in the Spiritual Adoption Program promises to pray for nine months for a baby in danger of abortion. While this child will remain unknown to his or her “spiritual parent”, God knows who the child is. Many people have found that naming “their child” helps to keep them focused on the reality that their prayers are helping to save a particular baby from the harm of abortion. This can be done in a parish or school setting, with age appropriate materials. To learn more visit www.spiritualadoption.org.
