“I entrust you with the Principalship of St Augustine’s College”. With these words Br Jeffrey Crowe, the Provincial of the Marist Brothers of Australia, commissioned Br Darren Burge as the seventeenth Principal of St Augustine’s College.

On Thursday 10th October a Liturgy of the Word including the Commissioning of Br Darren was presided over by Bishop James Foley.

Br Michael Green, National Director of Marist Schools Australia and a recent past Principal of this College introduced Br Darren to the Saints Community. Br Michael recounted the enormous contribution to the founding and development of the College that was made by Bishop Heavey, Father Phelan and Brothers Reginald and Walter. The College Sports “houses” are named after these men. In a similar way Br Darren, as a man of faith in the work of God, now offers himself in service of the College.

Br Paul Hough, Executive Director of Catholic Education for the Cairns Diocese and a past Principal of this College welcomed Br Darren to the Diocese of Cairns. Over one hundred guests joined the Brothers, Staff and Students of the College in welcoming Br Darren as the new College Principal.

Matt Hancock, College Captain, speaking on behalf of the College community welcomed Br Darren to St Augustine’s College which is in its 84th year. Matt noted that we are a College that values its Marist tradition. We are an important part of the Marist story here in Australia and the College has played an important part in the lives of many Marist Brothers. In turn the College has benefited greatly from the continued line of Marist Brothers who have been its Principal.

Br Darren, in his first address to the College community, reflected on the words of Jesus in

Luke’s Gospel in recounting the proclamation of the Prophet Isaiah:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives

and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed...”

Br Darren said that the challenge for all of us is to be inclusive in our nature as we discover more and more our identity in God.

The community of St Augustine’s College looks forward to the future of the College under the leadership of Br Darren.

From the Principal

Dear Members of the Saints Family,

Thank you to all for the warm welcome to Saints!

I would like to share with you some parts of my speech presented at the commissioning last Thursday. It outlines my thoughts about my focus for my leadership of the College and my warm regard for the community spirit that exists here at Saints.

Our gospel, the good news, challenges us to reach out to all. We are asked to take the good news to the poor, to release the captives and recover the sight of the blind, to let the oppressed go free. So, who are these people? Well, they are here amongst us...you might be one of them. At certain times all of us are one of them. They are the people who are doing it tough, who are a little different, don’t fit in so easily, are weaker for whatever reason. In every school or community there are those people who struggle to fit in - they are not as good at sport, they don’t make friends as easily, they struggle academically, they have a different cultural background, different gender or sexuality, health issues, they have issues at home that are distressing and painful. So, our gospel asks us to reach out and include all, to go out of our way to support and help even those we don’t naturally like or have much in common with. There is no ‘in group’, no levels of acceptability, nobody is more important than anybody else. We may have different roles and responsibilities, be of different ages but we are not valued differently. So, if we include all and treat each person with dignity, the way we would like to be treated then we will do as the good news asks. We will help to make people feel included, despite their differences. This will bring a sense of support and freedom to those in our school community who need it. I challenge you to reflect on and consider how you as an individual can reach out to all. I’ll be honest, it’s a challenge to me as well.

Why do I focus on these things today? The reason is new leadership of the school is not just about me, it is about all of us! It is a new beginning for our community. When you start something new, it causes you to reflect on who you are and asks where you should go. The specifics of where we go and how we develop as a College will emerge and unfold as time progresses. We will take this forward together. However, today I wanted to set before you my hope and my belief.

I know this is a wonderful community and has a unique and lively spirit. So, don’t think I am standing here putting this challenge to you because I believe we are not doing so well. To the contrary, I am excited because we do it so well and there is such a great spirit here, we can take it to another level. We CAN take it to another level. Let’s not rest on our laurels, let’s challenge ourselves to go further. Does this mean more work? Not necessarily more work but with even better spirit and better character.

This is the education I want for you. It will impact on how we perform in the classroom, how we work with each other, the way we relate in the dormitories, how we perform in our musicals, our artwork, our sport and so forth. We can thrive and grow when the environment around us encourages us to belong and values who we are…it is a place of trust, of good relationships, of comfort and of challenge.

Let us be heartened by the belief that we are in partnership with Jesus, Mary and Marcellin as we build a school community that embraces and includes all people. With the assistance of the spirit that is upon us and within us, we can take this excellent College community to new heights….to another level.

I hope and pray that with your support I will be true to these ideals and will lead this College into a new era and we will grow as a community together.

All the best for the term ahead,

Br Darren Burge FMSPrincipal

It is great to see the students return following the Term break focused and ready to begin work. At this early point in the Term can I reinforce with the students the importance the College places on respect for each other. Politeness and good manners are a suitable starting place as is the expression “thank you”.

road Crossings

The boys have been reminded of the importance of using the pedestrian crossings when crossing the roads that border the College, particularly Scott and Draper streets. Please have a word to your son in this regard. I also remind parents that we have a “Stop and Drop” signed and designated area on Scott street. Please use this area to drop off and collect your son.

New ZealaNd Ski TripQueenstown is the adventure capital of the world and we were greeted with clear weather flying in through the mountains surrounding the village – a spectacular way to start our 9 day fun fest. After settling in to our accommodation at Pinewood Lodge, we took the Skyline Gondola to ride the mountain luge and dine on the buffet lunch at the restaurant. The luge was a big hit with staff and students attempting courageous manoeuvres on the challenging downhill circuit. In the afternoon we visited the AJ Hackett Bungy at Kawarau Bridge. There were quite a few nervous boys when it came to making a decision to jump with many opting out and myself, Mr Little and Mr Cutuli having to take charge and sign up! Kaden Warnick was the first to jump showing great courage especially after the AJ Hackett staff dropped his harness into the river 43 metres below. Matthew Webb was the only one to get wet with his upper body being submerged in the freezing water. We finished the first day of activities with a blast on the Goldfields Jetboat. Oscar Bryett seemed to pick the wrong seat and was completely drenched by the end of the ride after numerous 360 degree spins.

The next five days were skiing and snowboarding at the Remarkables, Coronet Peak and Cardrona. The highlights were the inevitable snowball battles and the Huggett brothers with their rugby-like approach to snowboarding which was head first down the mountain on the board or not!In all seriousness, the group learnt the skills required very quickly and were all proficient on skis or snowboards by the end of the week.During the week we visited Walter Peak sheep station with a cruise on a vintage steam ship and an “all you can eat buffet” once again. The Skyline restaurant was frequented one more time for the traditional “Haka Cultural Performance” and evening meal. Blake Huggett was once again in the limelight with his hilarious “Haka” dancing skills. We finished with a joy flight over Queenstown in an “Over The Top” helicopter with the boys experiencing some negative “G’s” as the helicopter dropped over the end of a mountain top and into a valley below.I would like to congratulate all the boys for their attitude and conduct on the trip and special thanks goes to Mr Little and Mr Cutuli for their participation and supervision.Mr Neil Gregory

ANCIENT HISTORY TOUR - EUROpEOn September 20, twenty one students and three teachers with varying degrees of trepidation set forth on what turned out to be the adventure of a lifetime. Boarding our Qantas flight in Cairns at 1.00pm Friday, we emerged shattered shells twenty four hours later in Athens only to be whisked away and after a short interval given a guided tour of the New Acropolis Museum. It was to be symptomatic of the hectic and full schedule that was to follow. In short order we were to visit the Acropolis with its stunningly beautiful temples, the National Archaeological Museum, and just when ancient culture was set to overwhelm, there was time to sample the thriving contemporary Plaka district with its fascinating cafes and shops.Leaving Athens we visited the ancient sights of Epidaurus, Bronze Age Mycenae and Olympia. Along the way, the boys found time for a frolic in the Aegean and a race in Olympia’s ancient stadium. Congratulations to Jordan Way who just pipped Seamus McManus to the finish line. After consulting the oracle at Delphi , we returned to Athens via the hot gates of Thermopylae where, after a welcome night’s rest, we boarded our Alitalia flight to Naples. Basing ourselves at the picturesque seaside town of Vico Equense, there was little time to rest as in quick succession we embarked upon tours of Pompeii, Herculaneum and a spiritedly climb to the summit of Mount Vesuvius.

Saying arrivederci to Vico Equense, we set forth to Rome stopping along the way for a visit at the formidably impressive Archaeological Museum in Naples. Two days of constant walking around the Eternal City saw us take in most of the major sites including the Colosseum and Capitoline Hill, the Vatican Museum, Castel San Angelo, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain. The morning of the final day in Rome was an opportunity to explore the city looking for that last minute souvenir or shopping bargain before a visit to the magnificent Hadrian’s Villa. From there it was straight to Leonardo da Vinci airport disembarking thirty hours later in Cairns, tired but with our horizons most definitely expanded.Mr Larry Bellshaw

Here are a couple of very common “Thinking Errors” worth working on……

Black-and-white thinking: When you’re thinking in black-and-white, you see everything in as either good or bad, with nothing in between. (eg. either you’re great, or you’re a loser) The challenge: Look for shades of gray! Avoid thinking about things in terms of extremes. Most things aren’t black-and-white, but somewhere in-between. Just because something isn’t completely perfect doesn’t mean that it’s a total disaster. ask yourself: Is it really so bad, or am I seeing things in black-and-white? How else can I think about the situation? Am I taking an extreme view?

Filtering: When you filter, you tend to focus on the negative aspects and ignore or dismiss all the positive aspects. The challenge: Consider the whole picture! and ask yourself: Am

I looking at the negatives, while ignoring the positives? Is there a more balanced way to look at this situation?

Mind-reading: We often think we know what other people are thinking. We assume that others are focused on our faults and weaknesses—but this is often wrong! Remember: your worst critic is probably you.. The challenge: don’t assume you know what others are thinking! Ask yourself: What is the evidence? How do I know what other people are thinking? Just because I assume something, does that mean I’m right?

College Sacramental Program: Seventeen students welcomed into the Catholic Church

Seventeen students from Year’s 8-12 have over the last 3 months been journeying with Fr Laurie towards celebrating the Sacraments of Initiation into the Catholic Church. Last Sunday, October 13, the Sacramental candidates were welcomed into the Catholic Church during Mass celebrated with the Boarding community, sponsors, parents, friends and staff. The Mass, presided over by Bishop James Foley, Fr Laurie and Fr Martin Kenny included 8 Baptisms, 16 students making their first Eucharist and 17 Confirmations. It was a joyous celebration, not only for the many candidates, but for their sponsors and families as well. The candidates’ desire to become members of the Catholic Church recognises the sense of belonging and authentic spirituality that they have witnessed in the Catholic Church and its expression through the College. Many thanks to Bishop James, Fr Laurie and Fr Martin for presiding over the Sunday night Mass. Special thanks must be extended to Fr Laurie for preparing these young men and women towards membership into the Catholic Church. A note of congratulations to the families who have nurtured the faith of their sons and daughters, and also to the students who made this significant step in their journey of faith. The Saints Boarding community met on Wednesday night in Week 1. The emphasis of the meeting was the importance of getting settled into routine as quickly as possible and to contributing to community. Each and every one of our boarders brings special gifts and talents to our community and they are encouraged to go beyond their comfort zone to see how they can make boarding at Saints even better and stronger for all those involved with it.Term 4 is very short with only eight weeks of school for Years 8-11 and just six weeks for Year 12. Application to studies is vital for our seniors, helping to improve results across each of their subjects and to finish with their best possible results. There is no time to waste, every hour of every night of study needs to be used fully and fruitfully. The junior Boarders continue to be involved this term in the Tuesday and Thursday afternoon activities organised by Mr Evans with table-tennis, tennis and indoor sports as well as cooking on a Thursday afternoon featuring in the choices.Boarding Captains will be selected this term for both the Boys and Girls. Nominations and voting will take place to select senior Boarders who will take on this role following in the footsteps of Marcellin Champagnat, with a spirit of hard work and service to the boarding community. We look forward to the outcome of these selections.A visit to Weipa by Br Darren, Mr Czek Kersevani and myself will take place from 18th – 19th October. We look forward to meeting with our Weipa families again and to connect with more prospective boarding families.I trust that Term 4 will be a very positive time for all of our Boarding Families and as always, please do not hesitate to contact me or your son or daughter’s Head of Residence if you have any questions or concerns.Bernard Burgess - Head of Boarding

SAINTS Q7s SIDE STAND UP AT STATE TITLESLast weekend saw the Saints Rugby Union 7s side travel to The Southport School (TSS) on the Gold Coast for the state titles of the schoolboy Rugby Q7s. The boys qualified for the tournament after blitzing all opposition in a qualifier in Cairns at the end of Term 3, in which they beat Peace Lutheran 61-0, Trinity Anglican 46-0 and St Andrew’s 39-5, amassing 146 points (24 tries) in 42 minutes. With Rugby 7s now an Olympic sport, the rapid rise in popularity of the abridged form of “The Game They Play In Heaven” creates opportunities for the boys to compete at the highest level. The Q7s tournament is held in conjunction with the IRB 7s tour stop at Skilled Park, Robina. This allows our boys to test themselves against the best Rugby schools in the state. The boys drew big guns hosts TSS in round one and simply could not stop a first half onslaught before stemming the bleeding in the second stanza, going down five tries to one. The Saints boys then demolished Redcliffe’s Clontarf 36-0 and St Mary’s from Wide Bay by the same score, 36-0. The two wins saw our lads finish 7th overall, out of 18 teams, as the next best qualifier and drew TSS again in the Quarter Finals. Saints took an early lead and rattled the GPS grand finalist’s cage by drawing 12-all at half time. Unfortunately, the TSS boys were just a little too experienced and they went on to win the match. A Quarter Final berth meant that we had finished equal 5th, an achievement of which the boys can be extremely proud. We were clearly better than most opposition teams and only a peg or two below the better GPS teams in Queensland.

THANKS AND CONGRATS TO OUR SENIOR PLAYERS

It would be remiss of me not to mention our soon to be departing senior players who have done themselves and their school proud over their two years of Rugby at the College. Remaining undefeated over two years by another Cairns team for their senior years at the College, these core players have also finished 5th in the state as Peninsula representative players, Quarter Finalists in the State 7s and guided the 1st XV to their third premiership in a row. Captains Seamus McManus and Jordan Way; forwards Blake Huggett, Adam Young and Liam Duncan; halves Ben Harris and Connor Quinn and outside backs Dallas Skardon, Tom Pearce and David Bitmanis must surely rank as some of the greatest Rugby players that this College has ever produced. They are easily the most talented, committed, industrious, ruthless and professional senior players that I have had the privilege of working with at the College. I sincerely wish them all the best for their respective futures. We are very proud of you. Well done lads.Mr Toby McCarthy1st XV Rugby Coach
