Saitford Community Association News
Issue No 57 August/September 2004
HELP! On Tuesday 10 August from 2.00 pm, we are going to have a blitz on all of the chairs on the premises, especially those in the Main Hall. This is where the strength of our organisation is proved. Affiliated groups agree to support this type of activity in rerum for a reduction in hire costs and each of our 46 registered clubs is invited to nominate a member (or two) to help out on this date. At the same time, we shall carry out a hall audit and update the inventory of equipment while the management team will be carrying out a risk assessment exercise as required by the Health and Safety Acts.
If as many people turn up as we hope, it will also be possible to do some 'spring' cleaning in order to get the new season off to a good start in September. We are continually appraising the effectiveness of the affiliation system - help to prove that it works by coming on 10 August
DATES FOR YOUR DIARY Please make a note in your diary that we have arranged for the Blue Note Jazz Band to appear at Saltford Hall on Saturday 30 October 2004. Tickets will be on sale at the Saltford Post Office from 1 October 2004.
A little bit in advance but next year on 11 June 2005, we hope to arrange a concert at Saltford Hall by the Avon and Somerset Police Choir. More details later

The beginning of September has a 'new year' feel to it (not least for Methodists!) when activities resume after the summer break and we get back to our fifty bookings per week level. During August, we shall be sending a printout to all users showing the dates that we have recorded for their forthcoming session. Most have let us know their term start and finish dates but there are some that we have had to guess. Security It has been decided to make a small improvement in the security of the main building. There is now a deadlock on the front door which will be applied 'out of hours', that is to say, overnight and at weekends when there is little or no activity. Keys have been issued to nominated officers and some members of the committees as well as to the caretaker, of course. It is not intended to deny anybody
access and more keys could be obtained for a proven need, but this will help our overall management of the premises by knowing who holds front door keys. If you need to get into the building (for equipment maintenance or cupboard

The caretaker will not lend keys to anyone, just as at present, and during the day, the 'Yale' type lock will still be used so that hirers can lock themselves in if desired and those who hold one of those keys will still be able to use it.
Join Up There are many activities at Sattford Hall covering a wide range of interests - why not make a 'new year' resolution in September. The badminton clubs often look for new members and each has its own level of playing standards; did you know that the Wednesday morning badminton group is now ladies and gentlemen? Short mat bowls, whist scrabble, art - there must be something for everyone.
2004 Painting Exercise Our efforts this year will be concentrated on redecorating the Handicap Toilet, Cloakroom, Gentlemen 's Toilet areas and the exterior of the Main Entrance, plus any small areas that may need attention during the last week of July and the first in August.
We hope to see our regulars and, even more so, any new volunteers. Although some equipment will be available , please bring your own brushes.
The sessions are from 9.30 am ta 12.30 pm and again from 7.30 pm to 9.30 pm.

Helpl Can you spare a couple of hours, once a year, to help the SCA?
After 1 September, volunteers will be needed to collect £1 annual subs from members in the following roads: Anson Close; Broadway; Brockley Road; The Folly; Golf Club Lane; Grange Road (odd numbers); Montague Road; Stratton Road; Tyning Road; Wedmore Road.
Why not help the SCA and meet the neighbours or make new friends while you do this worthwhile activity once a year?
Any volunteers please contact the Hon Membership Secretary, Brenda Jones on 01225 873355.

Saltford Village Choir The Sattford Village Choir performed their first concert under the baton of their new conductor, Peter Hoskins, on Saturday 22 May. A concert enjoyed by all members of the choir and we hope the audience who supported us. The choir is now rehearsing (carols in July) for their Christmas Concert in December.
We will have a short break after our AGM on Tuesday 20 July and return on Tuesday 7 September 2004, a good time for new members to join. There is nothing interesting on the 'telly' so why not join us? All will be very welcome.

Ladies Keep Ftt Class 'Use it or lose it!' This familiar expression applies just as much to physical and mental fitness as to any other situation. Regular, moderate exercise is the key to preventing most of the major health problems which many people are now experiencing -conditions like obesity, high blood pressure, circulation problems, diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, back pain - the list seems endless.
Our class at Saltford Hall uses a wide range of 'movement to music' and, by offering options in movement, is suitable for different ages, abilities and levels of experience. The sessions focus on involving the whole body, keeping the muscles and joints working effectively and on maintaining a strong flexible spine. There is no floor work or high impact movements.
If you have already come to the classes, you will know how beneficial and enjoyable they are, so why not bring someone with you? If you havenot been before, come and give it a

try. You've nothing to lose and everything to gain
Classes begin in the Main Hall on Thursday 16 September, run from 10.00 am to 11.30 am and cost £4 per session. For further details. contact teacher Aileen Burgess on 0117 9491346.

$.Iltfortl Parlllh Council News
A4 Bath Road Speed Camenll First of all. I must apologise on behalf of ttle Parish Council for misleading you in the last edition of SCAN lNtien it was reported that the Speed Camera was not going to be reinstated. I must admit that it came as quite a shock to ttle system lNtien one day. out of the blue. the replaced Speed Camera was quite happily monitoring the speed of the Intercity Trains! It had been vandalised by having its camera turned to face ttle railway line ttle day after installation. After many hurried telephone calls I was assured, yet remained unconvinced. ttlat as our Speed Camera was up and running plior to the formation of the Somerset Speed Camera Partnership and that there have been 10 slight accidents, within a kilometre stretch of that road, in the last three years, this was a good enough reason to see the return of the camera. I guess that it has nothing to do with the fact that it is a good money spinnerl Regretfully, this information arrived too late for us to withdraw our previous arode. Dogs Once again. this Council has received complaints from across the village about dogs making a lot of noise at night. Please do not call me. Instead, ring either the RSPCA or the Environmental Health on 01225 477000. Also a rerrinder that it is still the responsibility of dog owners to 'Clean up after your dog: I do have a few Poop Scoops available in ttle office so please call in and collect these free of charge. Over1langlng Foliage At this time of the year, ttle Parish Council Office is inundated with numerous telephone calls about overhanging foliage reducing the width of pavements. If you are inconvenienced by this problem, the number to ring is Action Line 01225 394041. They WIll then arrange for B&NES Highways Department to investigate the complaint. lNtiich, In tum. will contact the offending property owner, advising them to cut the foliage back within a short period of time. Failing to do this will result in the Highways Department taking action themselves and then charging the property owner accordingly. Infonn.tlon Boards The Avon Valley Trail Project has installed a new information board along the CydetWalkway on the 8attl side of the river bridge. The board gives the telephone number of the B&NES contad for any maintenance problems. Later this year, a further board will be installed in The Shallows. Mead Lane RNer Bank B&NES Highways Department is still intending that reinforcement of the river bank along Mead Lane will take place in the late summer/autumn this year. It is understood ttlat tenders have been sought for undertaking the work but until a contractor has been selected no information is available. Youth This Parish Counal is concerned about the number of young people with nottling to do of an evening. Up until recently, we have had the services of the Detached Youttl Workers, 1Nti0 th is Counal has helped to fund. They have come into Saltford from Keynsham one evening a week to work with ttle young people. We understand ttlat this arrangement is temporarily termmated due to shortage of staff and so we are considering lNtiettler to introduce our own scheme to have
12
contact, guide and arrange activities for the young people. We would like to hear from anyone who is prepared to volunteer their time, expertise and services to such a cause, for which there is funding available. Please contact the Parish Council office on 01225 40005S. Microwave Mast - Network Rail We have been informed by NetwOOc; Rail that they propose erecting a 33 metre high (100 feet in old money) Microwave mast at the west end of the old station yard in Sattford. The purpose is to secure a national digital comm.mication system between train drive~ to signaner communications HQ. Network Rail informed us that they only require coverage along the track and so the baSe station and antennae equipment is designed to be directed along the railway. Our Local Planning Authority objected in the strongest possible terms but it seems likely that they will have to concede because Network Rail has permitted development rights. This Parish Council has also written to object to this mast being erected within the village (they have to be 4/5 miles apart in a direct line of contact). The next one is proposed at Hicks Gate. It remains to be seen whether we can get the proposal changed. If you wish to know more, then please contact the Parish 0ITice.
