    Biography

    Kiran Mazumdar Shaw was

    Born on March 23, 1953 in Bangalore.

    She did schooling from Bishop Cotton Girls School

    and Mount Carmel College at Bangalore.After doing completing her B.Sc. in Zoology from

    Bangalore University in 1973, she went to BallaratUniversity in Melbourne, Australia and qualified her

    masters.

    Collaborated with Irish firm Biocon international.

    Kiran owned 70% and Auchinloss (biocon int.)

    owned 30% of equity.

    Started Biocon India from her garage.

    Challenges as a leader

    When she started biocon, it was a virgin territory and noone had heard of biotechnology. It was good for someonelike her who is experimental and accidental entrepreneur.

    Her company began making Pepin, which was a plantenzyme from papaya, but Pepin was a low technology

    program and she wanted to go beyond that.

    She decided to create a very strong research engine as an

    integral part of the business.

    A devastating situation Personal vs Professional

    life.

    Biocon was busy negotiating with Danish firm

    Novozymes for the sale of its enzyme business.

    Her husband John Shaw was diagnosed with a

    cancerous lump in his throat.

    Ms. Shaw tended too her husband in the hospitaland made strategic decisions for the deal which

    was a great success.

    Developing novel enzymes, microbial enzymes for

    various industrial applications excited her.

    She and her Irish partner agreed and put together a

    R&D division, the first ever in India.

    Through this they, created exciting opportunities for

    scientists in India, and they would not have to go

    abroad.
