Y.E.S.S. LectureMonday, September 17 andMonday, November 19 at 7:00pm

The Salem Y is proud to announce the start of our third season in a series of forums for endurance sport athletes. Intended to serve as an umbrella clearing house for athletes, trainers and coaches, event organizers and product suppliers, the “YESS” (Y Endurance Sports Series) program is a quarterly gathering comprised of a keynote lecture, informal social networking of area events and opportunity for local vendors to promote products.

Featured for September will be a keynote speaker who will explore various methods of improving personal performance and endurance sport. Watch for the reveal of our November lecture later in the season.

Started in fall 2010, our goal is to have a program with wide ranging appeal to triathletes, cyclists, distance swimmers, marathoners, ultra marathoners and of course road racers and trail runners.

Interested vendors and athletes are encouraged to contact Elizabeth Schultz, Health and Wellness Director at the Salem Y at [email protected].

YMCA of the North Shore Volunteers Log record Number of Hours for 2011By giving their time in 2011, our North YMCA volunteers truly changed lives in our communities.

More than 3,200 volunteers logged over 31,000 hours for our organization, lending their expertise, their compassion and their enthusiasm to a variety of endeavors and positions that included road races, camp clean-ups, swim meets, Children’s Enrichment Center readers, lifeguards, homework helpers, camp photographers and marketing assistants, to name just a few.

While the true “value” of the time given by these 3,200+ individuals is immeasurable, the estimated monetary value is slightly over $820,376, based on the most recent information provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Corporation for National and Community Service.

give the gift of LearningJoin your fellow community members by supporting the mission and work of the Y. Give the gift of an educational scholarship to a young person!

With the start of a new school year, the Y is excited to welcome back the young minds that participate in our early education and after school programs! As with all of our programs, our Y is committed to never turning anyone away, regardless of their ability to pay.

Keeping to this mission, many of the youth we serve, future community leaders, artists and scientists, are able to participate thanks to help from financial assistance scholarships. These scholarships are made possible thanks to the generosity of our annual donors.

About the YMCA of the North Shore Annual gala Event:The corporate sponsors, donors and attendees of the YMCA of the North Shore’s Annual Gala made it possible for the Y to raise over $300,000 in 2011, including more than $115,000 in “Y camperships.” 100% of the funds raised at the Y Gala directly benefits deserving children and families with YMCA of the North Shore’s Financial Assistance Fund. In 2012, our Y will give away more than $2.5 million in financial aid for membership, program, childcare, camp and all YMCA services to 9,500 deserving kids, adults and families. That is one (1) out of every five (5) people in our Y. We are able to say yes to all those in need, but not without the generous support of our friends. For more information, please contact Kim Lations, Special Events and Volunteer Coordinator, [email protected] or 978.922.0990.

Social responsibility: A greater Cause

At the Y, strengthening community is our cause. Our Y has been listening and responding to our communities’ most critical needs for over 150 years. Whether developing skills or emotional well-being, welcoming and connecting diverse populations or advocating for healthier communities, the Y fosters the care and respect all people need and deserve. We truly have a greater cause!

Our Y cares for ALL in our community. It’s the socially responsible thing to do! One out of every three people in our Y needs our financial help to access essential Y programs and services. It takes the support of our entire community to help our neighbors in need.

A donation to the Y matters to the single mom who struggles to give her son a safe place to be after school. And it matters to your neighbor who lost her job in this uncertain economy as she tries to afford a Y membership that gives her and the kids a place to de-stress and bond.

Your gift matters to the 1,600 people in our Y who need our help. The Y’s annual campaign, Y FOR ALL, is well underway. We hope you’ll consider supporting your neighbors in need with a gift. You may make an online donation by visiting www.northshoreymca.org.

Together we can build stronger, more inclusive communities, provide support for families and promote positive change.

Planned givingThe YMCA has recently launched a new planned giving initiative. Common planned gifts include a gift made through one’s will, life insurance policy, or retirement plan. All gifts benefit our endowment, a permanent fund used to support the Y. Gifts made to the endowment today will help support future generations. All those who make a gift will be invited to join the Triangle Society, our planned giving recognition society. If the Y has left a lasting impression on your life, please call Sam Sanker, Director of Planned Giving, at 978-921-1753 for more information.

A Season of givingThe season of giving is upon us and last year the Salem Y community provided Thanksgiving dinner and holiday gifts for over 50 families. This could not have been done without your commitment to community and generous spirit. The need continues this year with our Thanksgiving Food Drive in November and Holiday Giving Tree in December. Watch the lobby, check our website, and find us on Facebook for more information. If you have any question or would like to volunteer, please contact Allyson Boyington, Supportive Case Manager at 978-744-0351.

Thanksgiving is FrEE forFriends and FamilyThe Salem Y would like to invite our members to bring their friends and family to the YMCA during the Thanksgiving Holiday. Starting Thanksgiving Day 7:00am-12:00pm, the Salem YMCA is open to the community and continues through close on Sunday at 6:00pm. This is a great opportunity to say THANK YOU to our valued members and share the Y with friends, family, and neighbors.

Did you know...?The Salem YMCA is a charity. We are a non-profit organization focused on community and human services. 100% of your donation goes directly to those in need. Every dollar donated to our Y For All annual campaign is used to support local children, families and individuals through Y programs, membership and camp. Y For All is more than donors and dollars. Our annual campaign is a grassroots effort led by dozens of volunteers and businesses from our communities.

Help the Y make a difference. It’s never too late to help my community with a gift to the Y For All campaign. Swing by the front desk or visit: www.northshoreymca.org.

Thank you!
