We know that the shining attraction of Salamanca Market is our stallholders and, historically Salamanca Market has been a small business incubator where stallholders have brought their innovative start-ups to start their journey in business.

The Innovator program is a formalisation of this role and one way in which the

City of Hobart is actively supporting economic development. The Innovator program has been created to provide an opportunity for new businesses to trial their product or service in a real-world trading environment with access to over 24,000 visitors in summer and 15,000 in winter each market day.

What’s in it for me?

The different products and experiences at the

Innovator site may attract new customers to the market

who can then browse and enjoy the full range of market stallholders.

We’re sure you have lots of questions. Why has the City of Hobart created this new stall type? The purpose of the Innovator is to support small start-up Tasmanian businesses by providing a stall site to test goods or services at Salamanca Market. This incubator program aligns with goals within the City’s Capital City Strategic Plan 2015–2025.

What is required of an Innovator applicant?Applicants must be registered with Business Tasmania and complete a business plan with the assistance of a business advisor. They should apply to the City using a form found on the market’s website and they need to complete an Innovator program template to summarise their business plan.

Their proposed product, service or experience must also have a connection to Tasmania. The connection could be through the raw materials, the people who design and make the product, or it authentically communicates the history or culture of Tasmania.

All applicants must also comply with all other regulatory requirements such as a food licencing or electrical test and tagging.

Who can apply to use the Innovator and will it effect my business?Applicants who meet the following criteria can apply:

• Any Tasmanian resident 18 years and above.

• They have been in business for less than 12 months, although there may be some flexibility in this requirement.

• Not currently a stallholder at Salamanca Market.

• Not related to an existing stallholder. Spouses, brothers and sisters, children, uncles, aunts, nephews and nieces would be considered ineligible. This is in line with the current stallholder agreements.

Even though the program is seeking new and innovative products and services, there may be occasions that a product is allowed onto site that is comparable with your offering. We may move the Innovator stall to another location within the market that week if we feel that the Innovator has the potential to severely impact your business.

If you feel we have not given your business due consideration please contact the Market Supervisor on the day. Do NOT approach the Innovator participant.

How many weeks are they allowed to trade?Successful applicants will be offered two consecutive trading weeks. Following the completion of a mandatory survey, the participant may be offered a further two trading weeks. Each Innovator participant can trade for a maximum of four market days.

What training will they receive? The Department of State Growth is a partner in the Innovator Program and assistance will be provided

to each participant from the Business Tasmania service and the Enterprise Centres Tasmania Program. Each participant will work with an Enterprise Centre business advisor for assistance in developing their business plan. The participant will also meet with the Stallholder Coordinator prior to trading to learn about bumping-in, safety at the market, waste disposal, and they will receive the Code of Stallholder Conduct.

Is this a short cut to becoming a casual stallholder? No. The Innovator program will accept a variety of products or services from start-up Tasmanian businesses. Salamanca Market might not fit the long-term business plan of the applicant and these businesses may go forward to set up a permanent shop front, develop an online business or they may be interested in continuing with a stall at another market.

After the four weeks of trading, if the Innovator participant is interested in continuing to trade at Salamanca Market, they will need to apply using a casual stallholder application form and will be reviewed against the standard casual stallholder criteria, including being assessed by City officers and a member of the Salamanca Market Stallholders’ Association. If successful, they will be required to call each Thursday to secure a site, the same as all casual stallholders.

Which site is the Innovator site?Only one site has been allocated to the Innovator which is site 182. This site was previously used for charities.

When will the program start?A trail will occur during November 2018 with the program commencing in December 2018.

How much is the Innovator site? Each trading day is $110 (inclusive GST).

Where can I find more information? Please visit salamancamarket.com.au/Forstallholders where you can view the full process and application form.
