Looking back, despite the significant shift in values that took place early last year, 2009 was a good year for the brokerage division of Burgess and mirrored a challenging but active marketplace. Over 100 yachts larger than 35 metres were sold in a 12 month period and although only a general guide, the average sale price achieved in 2009 was around 70% of the published asking price.

In terms of demographics, American buyers were key players in a market with plenty of opportunities. Around 30% of yachts sold were bought by US clients and a further 25% of sales reflected European purchase interests. Strong demand from the Middle East accounted for about 15% of the yachts sold in 2009.

Looking forward to the months ahead, the most interesting opportunities are likely to be found in the pre-owned yacht market. Competitively priced existing yachts offering a solid platform with an attractive refit prospect are likely to see strong demand. This may change as shipyards become keener to secure new build orders, and established yards are already seeing an increase in enquiries, although it may take until at least the latter half of this year before these translate into firm orders.

We currently know of 500 existing motor yachts and new build projects that can be developed for sale, from 40 metres to well over 100 metres. Some 50 sailing yachts in build and afloat are also being promoted for sale whether discreetly or on the open market.

Although there are never as many distressed situations as the market believes, realistically priced yachts will continue to present themselves and we can advise where there are deals to be done. A well-informed buyer who can react quickly is now in a very good position.

At the top of the cycle, Burgess invested in a multi-service model that has enabled us to manage the downturn without reducing headcount. Right now, we are working with serious buyers who are keen to go yachting and are confident that prices have levelled out – and summer is just around the corner.
