From the desk of the Pastor...
You might know the story about the man who was baptized -- as an adult, by immersion
-- and at the last minute held his wallet out of the water. It’s been an illustration for
many sermons. The man was ready to let God have control over all of his life except his
money. We may chuckle at that story, but in North American culture, it’s a common at-
titude.
If I was the one in the baptismal pool, I wouldn’t have qualms about my wallet or purse
getting wet. I would have more trouble dunking my calendar. My schedule? My time?
That’s the dimension over which I have struggles releasing control.
Over the years there has been much said about giving of your “time, talent, and treas-
ure.” It’s an attempt to simply describe the complexity and comprehensiveness of com-
mitment to Christ and the Church. Stewardship is often defined as “everything we do
after we say, ‘We believe’” In today’s congregations, conversations about stewardship
might address the three Ts in the reverse of how they are ordered above. We conduct an
annual congregational financial stewardship emphasis. We may have a system for gath-
ering information about church members’ gifts and skills. But we tend not to talk about
stewardship as giving time? Broaching that subject with the hyper-scheduled persons in
the pews is increasingly difficult.
The fact is that the amount of time that persons are investing in the church is shrink-
ing, perhaps faster than the dollars we are giving. The Hartford Institute for Religion
Research at Hartford Seminary completed their fifth national survey of congregations
in 2015. It includes responses from over 32,000 randomly-sampled US congregations
from a variety of denominations and faith traditions. It found that for the first time,
median attendance for all American churches is less than 100. The Pew Research Cen-
ters found that between 2007 and 2014, those who said they attended church weekly or
more often dropped from nearly 40 percent to about 35.5 percent, and those who said
they attended only a few times a year or less rose from about 45 percent to about 50
percent.
What would happen if each us decided to dedicate a percentage
of our waking hours to growing our faith? 16 waking hours in a
day times 7 days in a week gives us 112 waking hours per
week. If we dedicated 5% of our time to feeding our faith, we
are talking about 5 ½ hours a week, less than an hour a day!
Would you be willing to give up an hour a day to discover some
peace of heart and mind?

Special Congregational Meeting Notice There will be a special congregational meeting in all four LLCM congregations
on Sun., October 2nd, immediately following worship. The sole motion on the agenda will be:
To authorize the LLCM Board to extend a call to the Rev. Robert B. Ierien as pastor of the Lebanon Lutheran Cooperative Ministry.
Because this is a special congregational meeting, no other business can be transacted. Please make every effort to attend this meeting.
Background:
As you may remember, when the Co-op was formed in January 2014, the Co-op called Pastor
Andy, but it was the Synod Council that called Pastor Bob on a term basis in order to work out
some issues and provide some flexibility for the brand-new venture that was just being started.
Now several years in, the Co-op is on a steady course. Bishop Dunlop has authorized the Co-op to
hold a vote to regularize Pastor Bob’s call to the Co-op. With Pastor Andy now moved on to a new
call, it seems the time is right for the Co-op to vote to call Pastor Bob permanently. His term call,
which was renewed by Synod Council this past spring, goes until 2018.
Emmaus Service to Resume October 9th
The Sunday evening Emmaus service will resume beginning on October 9th. Emmaus is a con-
templative worship service offering time for prayer, reflection on scripture, and sharing of
Communion. It’s an opportunity to worship if you are unable to attend on Sunday morning, or
to take time to gather yourself before the busyness and rush of the work week.
Please note: The time and location of the Emmaus service have changed. The service will be
held in the Chapel (main sanctuary) at Salem at 6 pm. All are welcome to join us.
There are many activities offered through the congregations of the Co-op. Read a faith
nourishing book. There are many. Ask the pastors for some recommendations. Pray for
your family, your friends, your co-workers, yourself. Take some time for faith. Start
small – 15 minutes a day. You will be amazed at how much better your life appears.

CROP HUNGER WALK allows communities to come together to raise funds and awareness for the grow-ing problem of hunger throughout the world. Of the total amount raised, 25% stays in Lebanon County. So it is important that we come together as a church to support our local pantries that help the hungry in our area.
There is a display in the lobby at Salem. Registration
forms are available. We have a container for donations on
the table. Last year we contributed $757.00, of that
amount $500.00 came from the endowment fund.

Another birthday - thank you for making it special again. Fruit-so good as always. My wonderful friends, Joanne and James Foltz visited with me and also brought the fruit tray. I am so grateful to be a member of Salem for all my 93 years. Sincerely, Ollie Galbraith
Archives Corner: Summer brought visitors to Salem from California, Nevada, and Tennes-
see. After reading about Salem’s historic churches in the AAA Tour Book, traveling tourists
from California and Nevada decided to drop by for a visit. A researcher from Nashville, who had
requested and received genealogical information earlier this year, was inspired to visit Salem
when touring the area.
The “Lamplighter” poem by Robert Louis Stevenson reminds us of the work Ed McGowan,
property chairperson, has been doing in creating a brighter and safer exterior view of the church
property. LED light bulbs and more light fixtures have been added to the property. Please drive
by the church during the evening hours to see the glow and the added safety it provides for the
neighborhood. Thank you, Ed.
Dear Pastors & members of Salem, Thank you very much for the lovely fruit basket for my 95th birthday. It is very nice to be remembered on your birthday. Thank you everyone who sent me a birthday card. You are all so dear & caring to think of me. I really appreciate all you do for me. Thank you again, Charlie Wise

Thank you for the fruit basket that Sharon Martin delivered for my birthday. We had a nice visit & the fruit was delicious. Also, thank you for the cards which brightened my day. You are so kind. Blessings to all, Louise Kauffman
I am celebrating the 30th anniversary of my 21st Birthday! I hope everyone there is doing fine. I received the birthday card signed by everyone. Please convey my thanks and heartfelt appreciation. I can't wait to
get home for good in early DEC. I am currently on mission in Sarajevo, Bosnia in support of EUFOR HQ and away from my home unit in Kosovo. Say, "Hi" to everyone for me, and I can't
wait to get back into the swing of things. Best wishes. [Major] John Sheaf
