BUT AVERAGE ORDER SIZE FALLS 18% TO $44.75 The numbers are starting
to come in for Amazon Prime Day 2021, and sales went up even as the
average order size dropped significantly. According to Adobe
Digital Economy Index data, total U.S. online spend across
retailers surpassed $11 billion during the 48 hours of Prime Day
(June 21-22). This includes $5.6 billion on Day 1 and $5.4 billion
on Day 2, representing 6.1% growth compared to $10.4 billion in
total Prime Day 2020 online revenue. Total online revenue surpassed
$10.9 billion in online revenue recorded on Cyber Monday, the
largest single online shopping day in U.S. history. The first day
of Prime Day is the biggest online sales day in the U.S. for 2021
so far, followed by the second day. However, in a trend that held
throughout the 48-hour event, data from market intelligence
platform Numerator shows the average Prime Day order size was
$44.75, down 18% from $54.64 on Prime Day 2020 and 24% less than
$58.91 on Prime Day 2019. Helping to boost average household spend
totals was the fact that Numerator found 55% of households placed
two or more orders, with 11% placing five or more orders. Six in 10
orders were for $30 or less, with 10% of orders exceeding $200.
Over half of households that shopped Prime Day spent more than
$100, bringing average household spend to $106.41. Adobe also found
that large retailers with more than $1 billion in annual online
revenue benefitted from a strong halo effect across Prime Day,
seeing 29% e-commerce revenue lift over an average June day.
Smaller retailers with less than $10 million in annual online
revenue also did well, seeing their online sales increase by 21%.
According to Amazon, the Fire TV Stick 4K with Alexa Voice Remote
was the most popular item purchased during Prime Day. Best-selling
categories worldwide for Prime Day 2021 included tools, beauty,
nutrition, baby care, electronics, apparel, and household products.
In addition, many experts had speculated that given its late June
timing, Prime Day 2021 would mark an early kickoff to the
back-to-school shopping season. This may prove to be true, as
Amazon data indicated Prime members worldwide purchased more than
600,000 backpacks. And in good news for Amazon, Numerator data
shows 53% of Prime Day buyers only considered Amazon for their
purchases. One-quarter (26%) considered Walmart/Walmart. com, 21%
considered Target/Target. com, 10% considered club stores, 9%
considered department stores, 8% considered Best

RETAIL WORKERS QUITTING AT RECORD RATES Retail workers, drained
from the pandemic and empowered by a strengthening job market, are
leaving jobs like never before, The Washington Post reports.
Americans are ditching their jobs by the millions, and retail is
leading the way with the largest increase in resignations of any
sector. Some 649,000 retail workers put in their notice in April,
the industry’s largest one-month exodus since the Labor Department
began tracking such data more than 20 years ago. Labor professors
and economists say the pandemic also
made it harder for the nation’s 15 million retail workers to find
reliable child care and public transportation. But now that life is
returning to normal, analysts say, workers have begun to realize
they have options. “We’re seeing a wider understanding that these
were never good jobs and they were never livable jobs,” said
Rebecca Givan, a professor of labor studies and employment
relations at Rutgers University. “In many cases, the pay is
below a living wage and the hours are inconsistent and
insufficient. If anything, the pandemic has made retail jobs even
less sustainable than they already were.” Overall, retailers had
nearly 1 million job openings in April, more than twice as many as
they did a year ago.
WAIT TIMES FOR CHIPS HIT RECORD 18 WEEKS Chip-starved industries
from automakers to consumer electronics will need to wait a bit
longer for components, as delays in filling orders continue to get
worse. Bloomberg reports that chip lead times, the gap between
ordering a semiconductor and taking delivery, increased by seven
days to 18 weeks in May from the previous month, an indication that
chipmakers’ struggles to keep up with demand are worsening,
according to research by Susquehanna Financial Group. That gap,
already the longest wait time since the firm began tracking the
data in 2017, is now more than four weeks longer than the previous
peak in 2018.

COX: 65% OF AUTO DEALERSHIPS PLAN TO HIRE While perhaps not as
light as their inventory levels nowadays, auto dealerships appear
to be short on personnel, too, especially in the departments that
generate the most store revenue, Auto Remarketing says. Like many
industries, the U.S. automotive retail segment is struggling to
find enough employees for dealerships to be fully staffed, much
less meet their 2021 growth goals. According to the 2021 Cox
Automotive Dealership Staffing Study released this week, 72% of
franchised dealers surveyed said that finding and hiring the right
employees is currently a challenge. Furthermore, the study showed
that a majority of dealership leaders — approximately 65% — report
that they plan to increase the total number of employees in the
dealership this year, while approximately 34% said they plan to
maintain their staffing level. Cox Automotive found that expanding
the number of service technicians is the highest priority for
dealership leaders, with 60% planning to increase the number of
service technicians this year, followed by new-vehicle sales
associates (54%) and used-vehicle sales associates (48%).
AMAZON DOMINATING THE E-COMMERCE FIELD In 2021, Amazon will make
more than $386 billion in U.S. e-commerce sales, according the
latest estimates by eMarketer. That’s about $320 billion more than
its biggest e-commerce rival in the U.S., Walmart ($67.4 billion).
In fact, if you combine the U.S. e-commerce sales of the next nine
top e-commerce retailers, the total will still be less than
Amazon’s this year. Rounding out the top 10, according to the
research firm’s projections, are eBay ($40.5 billion), Apple ($35.3
billion), The Home Depot ($21.4 billion), Target ($18.6 billion),
Best Buy ($18.1 billion), Costco ($15.3 billion), Kroger ($15.1
billion) and Wayfair ($14.2 billion).
