SALESIAN NEWSLETTER Issue 11 Salesian Newsletter 20 July 2018 BONJOUR BOULOGNE WWW.SALESIAN.SURREY.SCH.UK I am delighted to be introducing our final newsletter of the year to you. This bumper addition will give you a flavour of some of the wonderful things that have been going on here at Salesian over recent weeks. Thank you so much to all of you who have supported recent events, particularly the Year 11 Prom, the production of “Annie” and our Creativity and Awards Evenings; it has been great to share these celebrations with so many of you. As always, we’re sad to be saying farewell to a number of colleagues who are moving on at the end of term. Maria Morrison has worked at Salesian for 26 years in the RE Department as a Head of Year and latterly as Head of Oratory. She is one of the most popular teachers I have ever worked with and has had a profound effect on a generation (and in some cases two generations) of Salesian students who have benefitted from her loving kindness and excellent teaching. Mrs Morrison is moving to Salesian College in Farnborough so it is good to know that we will still see her at “family” get- togethers. Paul Allen alias “Dangerous Reg” retired earlier in the year having worked as our Builder for the last 17 years. Paul will be known to many in the wider school community for his generosity of spirit, his charity work and of course his great practical skills. Emma Fitzpatrick, a former Salesian student, has been an outstanding teacher of English here for the last 8 years. Miss Fitzpatrick has spent most of her time this year at Chertsey High as Head of English and will be transferring their full-time in September. Tom Corry is also making a full-time move to Chertsey High as Head of Science having spent 6 highly entertaining years at Salesian. Gary Carter has gained iconic status as our Sixth Form Administrator over the last 6 years and is leaving us to embark on his training for the priesthood, please pray for his vocation. Sarah Payne is moving to become a Head of Year at Radnor House after 5 years teaching English, rowing and generally contributing to the wider life of the school. Cheryl Hacker who has taught Drama and inspired some great performances over the last 5 years is moving to a job closer to home at Rodborough. Pina Fagent is also transferring to Chertsey High after 5 years of selfless dedication in the History Department. Brid Hesse is changing career having spent the last 4 years doing a brilliant job in various roles in our administration team, most recently in establishing our Teaching School business. Ed Mitchell is moving to Ireland having taught Languages for the last 3 years. Nathalie O’Brien is in her 2 nd year in the PE Department and transferring to Chertsey High. Mari Langenegger has worked in the Cullum Centre for the last 2 years and is taking up a post at St. Mary’s, Ascot. James Greggor is returning to Halliford as Director of Sport having done a top job as Head of Year 9 this year. Angie Willoughby who has trained to teach with us this year starts her NQT year at Chertsey High. James Griffin returns to university at the end of his internship in the Maths Department. Rhiannon Connop moves to Chertsey High at the end of her internship in the Science Department. Brother Mateusz returns to Poland at the end of his placement in the community at Chertsey and Antonio Giannotta returns to St. Hugh of Lincoln, Knaphill after a brief secondment in the Maths Department. We offer our best wishes to all these staff for the next steps in their journey and ours sincere thanks for all they have contributed to our school community during their time with us, may they take something of the Salesian Spirit with them to embed in their new places of vocation. We also say a temporary farewell to a number of staff who will be on maternity leave at some point next term: Hayley Baumgart, Ann Murdoch, Enza Mountain and Sophie Rider (who recently gave birth to Agnes). They will be very much in our thoughts and prayers during all the excitement and joy ahead. We know that employing the very best staff is key to our success at Salesian and we are therefore delighted to have secured the services of another excellent crop of people. We look forward to welcoming, Owen Bruynseels, Deputy Headteacher from SJB in Woking; Hugh McDowell, 2 nd in History; Andrew Grandidge, Social Science; Stephanie Hopkins, PE; Eimear Mullane, English; Natalie Airs, Science & Social Science and two familiar faces who are returning to Salesian: Zena Kekkouri as KS4 Maths Co- ordinator and Conor Delaney in Languages. We have a number of NQTs, most of who have already completed their initial training with us, Ruth Spice in English, Sophie Griffin in Business, Jordan Cella in Drama, Jony Batt in DT, Clarizza Limpin in RE, Patricia Marques in Maths and Alex Odeneal & Andrew Bamford in Science. Our next cohort of trainee teachers are: Oliver Weedon in Maths; Alanis Cozens in Science; Alexandra Arthur- Worsop in Geography; Elvia Rietveld in Art; Niamh Ellison in English; Emily Batterbury in PE; Laurence Smither in Media; Lottie Greenwood in Business; Silvia Milanesi in MFL and Max Goldberg in Music. We are also joined by a number of new support staff: Michelle Fawcus-Smith, Teaching School Administrator; Sherillyn Bullock, Sixth Form Administrator; Claire Milne, Finance Assistant; Lara Cadahia, Assistant Teacher; Chiara Pesce, Monika Bachanska, June Devine, Ruth Jones, Joanne Jurkenas and Shauna Giltinan, Teaching Assistants and Grainne Landon & Faheem Shahin, Maths Interns. SALESIAN NEWSLETTER | Issue 11 2

on behalf of everyone here, I should like to thank everyone reading this newsletter for their unfailing support through the highs and the lows of this past year, for embracing our mission to build the Kingdom of God and for making such a positive contribution to that mission. Salesian remains a very special place.

We look forward to celebrating exam success with you over the summer holidays and to welcoming everyone back for another great year in September. In the meantime, best wishes to all for a happy, restful but fun-filled summer holiday. God bless you.

Gospel Reflection Mark 6:7-13

2017-18: Building the Kingdom from Salesian School

Jesus gives the disciples some advice about how to go about their mission in this week's Gospel passage. The theme of "mission" feels more appropriate for the start of the academic year rather than the conclusion of it but perhaps it offers a timely reminder that the mission carries on regardless of the holidays! As we come to the end of a long and busy term, everyone is justifiably looking forward to a much-needed rest and a well-earned break from the demands and challenges of working or studying in a school with such high expectations. It's worth remembering though that whilst we are quite rightly having a break from studying, supporting, teaching, managing and leading, the work of helping others to move closer to God never stops, not during the holidays or even when we leave Salesian.

In order to build the Kingdom from Salesian, we need to ensure that even when we're "off-duty", we're dealing with everyone we come across in the Salesian Spirit, that we're building community and that through these actions,we carry on introducing people to Jesus Christ. Reflections for the end of the academic year:

How have I helped others get closer to God this year?

What have I been most grateful for this year? For those who are returning: What will I strive

to do better when I get back in September? For those who are moving on: How will I take

what I have experienced at Salesian to do good elsewhere?

Sixth Form Student Committee

We are pleased to announce the new Salesian Sixth Form Student Committee for 2018-2019. Left to right Harrison Barnard, Pablo Gonzalez, Lance Quimpo, Mariella Sola, Ellie Hegarty, Elisa Caltagirone. They will be integral in overseeing social and fundraising events, caring for the environment, student well-being, spirituality and bringing our communities together. We look forward to seeing everything they will achieve over

the next academic year, having already been an inspiration to their peers.

Year 13 Leavers Ball

Students in Year 13, as well as their parents and teachers, will be acutely aware of the level of hard work involved in the build up to exams and the number of sacrifices that must be made during revision time. Following this, there is the pressure of the exam season itself as students want to ensure their preparation pays off with their best performance in the exams. The Year 13 Leavers Ball marks the end of this period, when students can get dressed up and finally let their hair down enjoying a night of celebration with each other and members of staff.

This year the ball was held at Oatlands Park Hotel in Weybridge, where students had a 2-course meal, followed by dancing and a photo-booth to capture those moments. A special mention must go to Stephen Lim-Heath and Mia Partridge, ably assisted by Grace Murphy and Tyler Lewthwaite, who between them did the majority of organising - you really did do a wonderful job! Mr Goulborn, the students' Head of Year from Year 8 through Year 12, was a familiar face and very much welcomed back in his role as DJ Goldie!

Having the opportunity to step outside of the classroom and celebrate with the students, gives us the chance to see how much they have grown up and how far they have come with us on their individual journeys at Salesian. It is fair to say the students were in good spirits as they danced away until the small hours!

Next up, results day....!

Sarah Elmer (Head of Year 13)

Post 18 Option Evening On Wednesday, this week all year 12 students took the first steps in thinking about life after Salesian Sixth Form. The day started with Meg and Steve from the ‘Life Skills Company’, delivering their fantastic workshop on writing a personal statement. This is what the students said, “I am a bit unsure about what I want to do, but this morning has made me realise a plan of action”. “I am not very good at writing about myself, but this workshop made me think objectively about what I need to write and include in my personal statement to stand out from the crowd”.

We were also fortunate to have some previous students come back and generously give up their time to speak to the year 12’s about their experiences and journeys so far since leaving us. They were truly great, giving honest advice and showed our year 12’s all the things they have to look forward to after achieving their best with us in their chosen courses! Thank you to all our speakers who included Harry Roberts-Hunt, studying Graphic Design with a football scholarship at Culver Stockton College, Missouri. Amy Butler, studying Physical Education in Secondary at Chichester University. Christina Vinci spoke about getting into an accountancy apprenticeship, and has now worked with Exceed CA LTD for six years. Starsky Torchia (current year 13) gave some advice on choosing a course and the application process; he is hoping to be studying Maths at Bath University this September. Nadia Tognelli spoke about applying to Medicine; she will be starting her medial journey in Southampton this September. Elena Cachia gave some insight into her first year as a Veterinary

Science student and Olivia Godden talked about the benefits of her Art and Design Foundation Diploma in deciding on her Undergraduate Degree. Oliva will be continuing her creative journey at Kingston University, Knights Park Campus studying a BA in Graphic Design.

In the evening parents and students were invited to hear from external professional speakers, who offered invaluable advice to help them begin the process of finding happiness after they leave us and beyond! Thank you to Clare Allison from Goldsmith’s University speaking about admissions, Ricky Leaves from Weir Training Apprenticeships and Natalie Papworth our Work experience and careers advisor.

Porstmouth University Open Day

On the 4th July our Year 12 students went on their annual university open day down to Portsmouth, getting the opportunity to visit a city centre university, as well as a chance to have an open day experience where they are free to explore university and campus life with their peer group. The students were able to listen to various subject talks in addition to looking at the Student Union and see the accommodation choices available. It would also be fair to say, that quite a number of students took advantage of the various coffee shops and cafes on the campus so that they could

enjoy a key part of the university experience - may be that was just a large part of mine!

As we were blessed with good weather, students and staff were able to relax in the gardens of the university and listen to the various musical groups performing throughout the day. A few snuck off to the beach after their talks but who would blame them on such a nice day. This trip is always beneficial, as it helps to develop the students’ ideas of what sort of university and course they would wish to apply for in the new academic year and allows us to spend time with the students outside of college. Students certainly took many positives from the day.

"Throughout the day, I managed to attend a talk on Journalism, which I really enjoyed, and explored

what the surrounding city has to offer. I can definitely imagine myself attending Portsmouth or

another city based University."

Year 12 English Language Trip On the 2nd July, Year 12 English Language students visited the British Library to take part in a series of interactive workshops. In the spirit of collaboration, we were joined by fellow English Language students from SJB school.

During the first workshop, the students were given the chance to explore how the English language has changed over time. They carried out research in the aptly-named ‘Treasures Room’ of the library, in which a precious collection of manuscripts - from first edition Shakespeare to original Beatles’ lyrics – can be found on display. This hands-on experience, with access to a wealth of source material, created a valuable chance for students to build on skills covered in the course this year. Later in the afternoon, the students took part in a workshop that considered the many varied accents and dialects we have in the UK. The specialist researcher leading the session encouraged the students to reflect upon social attitudes to language use, providing an excellent introduction to topics they will study next year.

The visit has given the students the chance to explore language in new ways and to benefit from the expertise of a number of specialists. Their enthusiasm and the many contributions they made throughout the day helped to make it a real success!

Kat McEvoy (Teacher of English)

Year 12 CERN Trip The Physics department and 19 students visited the home of Physics (CERN, Geneva) on the weekend of the 13th, 14th and 15th July. The opportunity to visit the Large Hadron Collider does not come around often and the students jumped at the chance to visit the place of discovery of the "God Particle". The Higg's Boson is the virtual particle that gives all substance mass! One of the last pieces missing in the Grand Unified Theory!

The students thoroughly enjoyed themselves viewing the ATLAS detector in all its technical glory followed by an insightful tour of the CERN facilities. In the down time of the trip, a lot of suncream was used, as they sunbathed and swam in the quiet shores of Lake Geneva.

The trip was a huge success and will be running again next year for our new year 12's!

Lewys Jones (2nd in Science)

Year 12 Biology Field Trip

On the 9th July our two Biology classes set out for a day of intense but varied field work at Juniper Hall in Dorking. In the morning, the habitat we studied was a stream, investigating the impact of abiotic (non-living) factors on the abundance of water invertebrates in the River Tillingbourne. We learnt many new skills such as how to measure the water velocity, temperature, pH and depth of the stream. Some of us found unusual creatures, such as a crayfish. In the afternoon, we hiked to Mickleham Downs where we laid transects to examine the succession of plant species from the path across the long grass to the forest. We used various techniques to investigate the variation in plant species across the path. After a very productive day, we enjoyed tea and cake at the field centre before heading home.

Our Year 11 Prom was held on Wednesday 4th July at Foxhills Golf & Country Club. Over two hundred year 11’s arrived at the red carpet in all manners of transport from police vans, motor bikes and limousines to vintage buses. The venue looked stunning thanks to the decorations and design of parents Mr & Mrs Cronin.

The students celebrated the completion of their exams with fireworks, a buffet, photo booths and a fantastic DJ who had the students dancing all evening.

Being joined by 30 Salesian staff on the evening we couldn’t have hoped for a better send off to our amazing class of 2018. We look forward to seeing you on results day to celebrate more of your success.

Chris Browne (Head of Year 11)

Duke of Edinburgh Expedition On Friday 29th July we finally made it out for our first Silver expedition of the year, after the snow scuppered the March expedition, with a group of 55 students across Year 10 and 11. The Surrey Hills were beautiful in the blazing sunshine and all the students coped impressively in the tropical conditions. We were lucky enough to be joined by some fantastic teachers (as usual) and 3 interns who have been working with the Maths department for part of the summer term. Our intern Anna McCutcheon, said “From a personal perspective I really enjoyed seeing the students not as “students” but as individuals; being able to read the map with them when they were confused and working out where we were together was really rewarding and definitely strengthened my relationship with some of them. I think it is fair to say that the walk was challenging but the look on their faces when they were walking over that final field made me so proud of them all. They all did incredibly well and have proved that it is possible to survive 3 days on haribos and pasta!”

Sophie Woodroffe (DoE Manager/Teacher of Maths)

Year 10 Borough Market visit

On Monday 2nd July, Ms Lightowlers, Mrs Alighieri and I took 19 GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition students to Borough Market. The day started with the students having some time to explore the oldest food market in London, which has been in existence in one form or another for around 1,000 years! The students had the opportunity to investigate this ever-changing institution, getting a taste of the markets exceptional produce and learning that many of the stallholders are the producers, whether it be the farmer who reared the animal or the baker who baked the bread. Many photos were taken ahead of their NEA in September. We then met up with the students at lunch, where they chose food from their favourite stalls to satisfy their hunger.

After lunch, we visited the BreadAhead bakery. Here the students completed a pizza making workshop, learning about the bread fermentation process, getting up close and personal with lots of sticky dough and making some amazing products. Overall, it was great to see them all so enthusiastic about the variety of cultural foods available and immersing themselves in the riot of colours, smells and bustle of a market steeped in history. They all behaved impeccably and I’m looking forward to running the next year 10 trip!

Katie Murphy (KS3 Lead/DT Teacher)

Eden Project Weekend

39 of our Year 8 students travelled in convoy, by minibus, to Cornwall to experience a fun-filled weekend on all things Geography. Friday saw students experiencing the best the Eden project Biomes had to offer, where students learnt about different plant habitats and what it was like to be in a rain forest. On Saturday, students were able to

enjoy both physical and human Geography at its best. Whether it was a stack naturally formed by the sea or looking at town regeneration in St Austell, students had a wonderful time.

The evening culminated in an epic water fight battle where Mr Keeling, Miss Nelson, Mr Roberts and Mrs Hibbins-Durkin were seriously outnumbered in the attack.

On our final day, students and teachers alike had a serious hit of adrenalin at the appropriately named ‘Adrenalin Gorge’, flying high in the air on the swing or flying fast down to earth on the zip wire. What a wonderful weekend; I cannot wait until next year!

Katie Hibbins-Durkin (2nd in RE)

Down into the Wood On Thursday 28th June 2018 nine year 10 students went into the woods to do some forest school activities as part of their ASDAN Course.

We started the day with a walk to camp through the woods, learning about the plants we could eat and those we should not touch along the way. On arriving at the campsite we settled in making ourselves a drink and enjoying a snack before embarking on our first activity of den building. Splitting into two teams, we had an hour and a half to build a waterproof shelter. Of course, every product needs testing and as we stood inside our shelters, staff threw water over the shelters in the absence of rain. Both teams got wet!

We demonstrated our campfire skills preparing and cooking burgers and bread dough on sticks over the fire. We were taught about different ways to light a fire in the woods as well as being shown how to prepare a fish for cooking over the fire.

The day ended with a game of manhunt. We all had a great time and worked together as a team and learnt a lot of new skills.

Poppy Maxwell-Roberts (Year 10 Student)

Year 8 Retreat Following on from our inaugural Year 7 retreat, all our Year 8 students attended their retreat day on Wednesday 11th July at our Sixth form site. The young people enjoyed the freedom to play, pray and picnic together. Yes, you read this correctly; there were 250, twelve and thirteen year olds on a full days retreat, and embracing everything with such enthusiasm and joy. The theme was from psalm 139: how we are all beautifully and wonderfully made. There were experiences that unwrapped this idea in relationship with our ourselves, with others and with creation. The purpose of this day is to recognise we are loved children of God. Most of the day was spent in Tutor groups journeying around a number of workshops led by staff. The students themselves had organised a shared lunch with their Tutors. It was such a pleasure to see 250 Year 8 students, with staff and Year 12 students sitting in large groups on the lawn eating and laughing together; perhaps heaven may be like this but with less Pringles! The retreat was brought to an end with the celebration of Mass, bringing us back to the theme and thanking God for the gift of each other. Great energy, joy and creativity, and beautiful weather; what could be better?

Fr Kevin O’Donnell (Chaplaincy/Teacher of RE)

PGL Maths Trip On the weekend of the 13th July, 72 of our Year 7’s were lucky enough to travel down to the coastal Osmington Bay PGL, Weymouth. We arrived Friday afternoon, full of beans ready for the exciting weekend ahead. Students took part in lots of exciting activities, completing a range of mathematical tasks at the same time. They calculated their speed on the Zip Wire, the length of the rope they used Abseiling, monitored their heart rate on the Giant Swing, calculated the proportion of balls scored on Aeroball and solved mathematical problems through a Tunnel Trail. They were all a pleasure to take and myself, Mr Fullbrook, Mrs Nagle, Mrs Barclay, Mrs Milligan, Mrs Tack and Mr Roberts really enjoyed spending the weekend with a group of supportive and enthusiastic individuals. To top off a thrilling weekend we all took a trip to beach where we enjoyed the lovely weather before heading back to the site for a campfire.

Alice Peterkin (Maths Teacher)

Modern Foreign Languages Boulogne Trip On 5th July the MFL department took 74 Year 7 and 8 students to Boulogne for the day. We all had a

Year 6 Induction

On the 3rd and 4th July, Salesian School opened its doors once more to 280 prospective Year 7 Students. This is always an incredibly exciting time, welcoming new students to our Salesian Community. Students eagerly poured through the School Gates, saying ‘Goodbye’ to their more nervous looking parents! Prefects walked and hosted students into the hall where they were also met by their future teachers. After a welcome Assembly, students were straight into experiencing the kinds of lessons they will be attending in September. It was so fantastic to see them all throwing themselves enthusiastically into Science, Geography, English and Maths.

In addition to this, they also took part in 2 lessons of PE. The PE department put on a special carousel of activities for them all, quickly getting them into the competitive spirit, encouraging them all to learn more about their new cohort. One thing that is always so special about these two days is seeing how quickly students form new friendships. At break and lunch, breaking away from the safety of their primary school colours and embracing new opportunities.

We also had the pleasure of welcoming the parents to an information evening on the night of the 3rd. One of our ex-students had been filming the day and created the perfect snapshot of the children’s first day at Salesian.

The two days culminated in a Mass together celebrating what a fantastic and joyful experience they all had. The students were singing so loudly, it even interrupted a meeting Mr Kibble was having, forcing him to come and join in!

We are really looking forward to welcoming this new group of Year 7’s in September, and hope they all have a restful and enjoyable summer break.

Sporting News U15 Cricket Tournament

Last week the girls went to the South East of England Cricket Finals, making it all the way to the final but narrowly missing the victory, placing runners up overall. All the girls played amazingly with a special mention to Captain Nicole Dragos who fielded exceptionally well and Ella Townsend (Year 7) who stepped in at the last minute despite being up to 3 years younger than all the other players! Throughout their campaign the girls have playing incredibly as a team and really pushed themselves to achieve top results; well done girls you should be very proud of yourselves!

District Tennis Tournaments

The Year 7 boys and girls won both District Tennis tournaments at Heathside last week. They remained unbeaten throughout and played with composure and skill. Great work!

Sports Day

House pride was high on Tuesday at the Salesian annual Sports Day, which took place at St. George’s College. Styled in their house t-shirts, the students arrived ready to compete in the different sporting activities and take part in the day’s festivities.

From classic Sports Day events such as the 100m sprint, to more specialist events like pétanque, it was wonderful to see so many of the students take part and compete to win points towards the coveted house trophy. Not only this, but some students were able to try their hand at new sports, such as golf chipping. Mr Harrison, who ran this event, was impressed with the skill of some of the novice golfers. He commented, ‘there are some extremely talented golfers out here today- it’s wonderful to see!’

One of the highlights of the day was undoubtedly the 1500m race, which saw students and staff running and jogging side by side to complete this endurance challenge. Community spirit was in the air as anyone not running stood and cheered, on what turned out to be a gloriously sunny day.

As the day’s sporting events ended, all eyes turned to Mr Kibble to announce the results. Despite all houses performing admirably, it was Savio who clinched this year’s victory and who will be proud keepers of the trophy for another year.

Annie Production

This year’s summer musical production of ‘Annie’ took place on Wednesday 11th and Thursday 12th July. The show stars Jaimie Kollmer (Year 8) as little orphan Annie, who is desperate to escape from the orphanage run by the formidable Miss Hannigan (Sophia Fisher Year 9) where she lives with a chorus of other orphans, including her friends Molly (Abbey Jones, Year 7), Duffy (Sacha Paurine Year 7), July (Sophia de Luna Year 9), Pepper (Josie Needham, Year 8), Kate (Grace Feury Year 7) and Tessie (Abigail Johnstone Year 8). Lucky Annie is chosen to spend Christmas with the millionaire Oliver Warbucks (Mara Marques Year 9), his secretary Grace Farrell (Erin Vellucci Year 8), Drake his Butler (Henrique E SilvaYear 8) and his team of loving servants. A nationwide campaign is launched to find Annie's real parents with the help of Bert Healy (Joseph Tambaro Year 9) and the lovely Boylan sisters (Layla Scott Year 7, Eloise Enser Year 8, Lola Mausolle Year 8). When her real parents fail to come forward, Warbucks plans to adopt Annie but plans are interrupted by the trickster Rooster (Marti Hawkes Year 8) and his girlfriend Lily St Regis (Maeve Hegarty Year 8). With some help from President Roosevelt (Finnan Golding Year 7), Annie finally finds the family she has been longing for and is reunited with her beloved dog Sydney! With a cast of over 60 and a full orchestra too, the students involved have worked tirelessly since April on the show. The show was an astounding success and would not have been possible without the support of so many parents, friends and family who came to watch. The Drama and Music department are extremely proud of the students who will have no doubt created some very long lasting memories from being in the show.

Creativity Evening On Thursday 12th July we celebrated our creative achievements at the annual summer Creativity Evening. We believe that creativity plays an important part in helping our students learn; being creative requires innovation and curiosity in learning, which takes courage to achieve.

The evening was an opportunity for family and friends to come and see how we use creative approaches to learning everyday within lessons, and how innovative thinking is valued within all departments, showcasing activities and celebrating successes from the year. Parents and students were able to visit stalls and explode volcanoes with the Geography department, take part in Social Science treasure hunt, reenact scenes from Macbeth in English and sample French crepes with the MFL department. Our Young Enterprise group were busy selling their products, whilst the

Design Technology department showcased its amazing achievements from the year with fantastic textile and fashion examples, product and graphic design models. We were lucky enough to be able to sample some of the current Year 10 Food Technology student’s delicious selection of yummy canapés. The annual GCSE and A-Level Art and Photography exhibition was exceptional with students creating personal and thought provoking responses through a variety of media. It was a fantastic evening celebrating the students’ creative achievements.

Scholars Dinner

Every year we celebrate the success of our only auditioning choir, the Salesian Scholars, and welcome in those students who have successfully auditioned for the forthcoming year. We marked the occasion with a trip to Pizza Express – all were on great form and looking forward to the very busy year we have planned for them next year! Huge thanks to our exiting Year 13s – Georgina Schild, David Encacao-Pereira and Arthini Thushyanthan, for their fabulous contribution over the years.

Music Trip to Ronnie Scott’s

On Sunday 15th July, the Music department took our current Year 10 Music GCSE class and A-level class to see the jazz singer Salena Jones (who we found out was the grand age of 88 and still performing!) in one of the world’s most iconic jazz venues, Ronnie Scott’s. Ms Jones was performing with the Martin Shaw band, comprising of Chris Eldred on the keys, Richard Shepherd on the Sax, Spencer Brown on the bass, Peter Cater keeping the beat on the drums and Martin Shaw on the trumpet/flugelhorn. It really was a treat to see these jazz musicians up close and personal, and I think the students were really inspired by not only how tight the band was but also how comfortable and laid back they all looked on stage! The trip was a real success, and the lunch at Pizza Express before was pretty delicious too! Next visit is already in the diary!

House Reward Trip

On Thursday 12th of July, 32 of the highest earning house point students were taken to Thorpe Park to celebrate their fantastic achievement. This is in recognition of their efforts in demonstrating Respect, Understanding, Affection and Humour throughout the year These deserving students have worked consistently hard this year to earn the most amount of house points in their year group. Their hard work and dedication definitely paid off as they were awarded with a day of fun-filled celebrations. They enjoyed exhilarating rides, braved the terrifying Ghost Train and battled each other on the Dodgems. The students were accompanied by Mr Bryce and the Heads of House who enjoyed the soaring adventure rides just as much as the students!

for financial support for 4 of our students going to Lourdes as helpers this Summer.

The Catenians have kindly given each student £75 towards the cost of the pilgrimage. Their generosity is very much appreciated and will help to ensure that our students can afford to enjoy this wonderful experience.

New House Flag The House Team have been working closely with the graphics club and Miss McKeogh to design a new house flag. I am sure you will agree that the flag looks fantastic. The house flag will be used at all house events at school and when we go on trips to ensure that students can clearly see the event is taking place and encourage students to get involved. We are looking forward to using it at Sports Day next week. Thank you to SPA for allocating the funds for the house flag.

Fairtrade Assembly at St. Anne’s Catholic Primary School, Chertsey On Thursday July 12th students and staff from Salesian School’s Fairtrade Committee took up the offer of delivering an assembly on the topic of Fairtrade at St. Anne’s Catholic Primary School, Chertsey.

Niamh Forbes and Calogera Scannella (Year 10) together with Assistant Chaplain Br. M Papierz SDB and I arrived at St. Anne’s to meet with the Deputy, Headteacher Hanorah Murphy, staff and students in the hall.

With the technical assistance of Br. Mateusz, Calogera and Niamh delivered an inspiring presentation about the benefits of Fairtrade, both for producers and consumers. The children of St. Anne’s were very much engaged with the content of the assembly and the strong message of social justice that it conveyed.

Many thanks to Hanorah Murphy for the warm welcome given to us as well as Niamh, Calogera and Br. Mateusz without whom this event would not have been possible.

NQT Accreditation On the 9th July, we were delighted to welcome over 70 newly qualified teachers from across our network of schools to celebrate the successful completion of their NQT year. We are privileged to

be the biggest NQT awarding body in the area and take great pleasure in supporting new teachers in their first year of teaching, culminating in a formal assessment. To celebrate their success, Mr Kibble spoke about the importance of teaching in the world as general, and we were all inspired by a talk from the Head of History at St Peter’s School in Guildford, who has been in post for over 20 years and still exuberates immense passion and dedication for the job! We very much hope to continue to work with these NQTs in our new Teacher Development Course, designed for teachers in the early stages of their career.

Teach SouthEast Class of 2018

Teach SouthEast has ended a very successful training year with the 55 Trainees all being recommended for Qualified Teacher Status, with all those seeking employment securing a job for September 2018. We are delighted to say that 47% of the cohort ended the year graded as ‘outstanding’ Trainees with 51% being graded as ‘good’. All Trainees graduated from the programme celebrating with an afternoon of refreshments, afternoon tea and formal ceremony, surrounded by colleagues from across the Partner schools. As they move forward in to their first year of teaching as NQTs we wish all of our Trainees the very best of luck and look forward to supporting them through a programme of continuing professional development across the Partnership.

As we say goodbye to the class of 2018 we say a very warm welcome to those Trainees starting their training year with us from September 2018. We are delighted to have welcomed the new Trainee cohort in to the Partnership at their pre-course induction at the end of June and look forward to working with them next year and seeing them develop in to fantastic teachers within our local schools.

Getting to Know Our Teachers

Current position in school I am at the end of my NQT year and currently teach Art and key stage 3 Graphic Design. I am also a Year 9 tutor and I run Graphics club for Year 7 and 8 on a Wednesday after school.

How I got into teaching After finishing University, I trained on various film productions in Shepperton and Pinewood studios as a Prop maker and Set dresser. In between productions, I worked freelance in the events industry in London, putting on parties and making venues beautiful. Although I loved this work, I always felt a calling to help people and work in a position of care. I trained, as a care worker for adults with learning difficulties, worked in a special needs school, volunteered with Artists with learning disabilities and eventually started working with the 240 project, who provide support to people affected by homelessness, as an Art facilitator. This is when I realised I wanted to be an Art teacher.

Why I love my job I love getting to know all the individual personalities of our students here at Salesian. I love spending my days thinking and talking about Art and Design with them, figuring out new and interesting ways to pass my passion for the subjects on. It is the best feeling in the world when a student shows you a piece of work they have been working on at home or see a smile on their face as they realise that they can draw! No two days are the same here at Salesian and there is never enough time to get bored.

Salesian Parents Association Well, what an amazing school year the SPA have had, none of it possible without the support of parents and friends of Salesian, so a HUGE thank you. We have a lot to shout about, the funds raised since September have made such a difference to the day-to-day school life of our children.

Purchases include, a New Laser Cutter, a great benefit across both GCSE and A-Level, also giving the students access to modern technology. Seven new recycled picnic tables for the recently built area for the students to socialise and eat - I am sure they will get lots of use! A specialised Table Tennis Table for the Cullum Centre, and seven further Table Tennis tables for our Sixth Form site. A new house flag, and a new camera. Additionally, we have funded the allocation of £250 to each department for the purchase of learning resources in September for the new school year.

The Spa also received an anonymous donation of £500, which we have used to purchase two new speaker systems for the school.

We are planning lots more events for 2018/19 and hope that you will come and support them!
