2016 4-H Enrollment Information 4-H Youth Enrollments - Due March 1st Remember 4-H members must be 8 as of January 1. Youth 5-7 will be enrolled as Clover Kids. 4-H member enrollment MUST be completed using 4HOnline enrollment by March 1st and will be considered com-plete when you have paid the $6 membership fee to the Extension Office. Remember, members may enroll for a pro-ject in only one county or club. We have a number of members who belong to two different clubs and they cannot enroll in the same project in both clubs. Two clothing levels are the same project area, as are market and breeding sheep. If you have questions please call the UNL Extension Office in Saline County at 821-2151. You will make your 4-H enrollments at the following link: http://saline.unl.edu/4-h-enrollment Club Enrollment Time As clubs begin to reorganize, be sure to welcome new members and engage the parents into the club also. Intro-duce the parents to each other, asking all parents to help with something throughout the year, will give them a sense of belonging, and will aid you down the road. First Year 4-H Members First year 4-H members are strongly encouraged to limit their enrollment to no more than 5 projects. We want members to get started right in 4-H. We know there are lots of fun and interesting projects, but our records show most beginning members only complete a couple projects. So the 4-H Council is encouraging members to limit them-selves and have a good first experience before you tackle all those other interesting projects. Clover Kids Youth who enroll as Clover Kids (ages 5-7) will be allowed to show in Open Class livestock classes at County Fair only if they complete an ID and enter the age appropriate animal by June 15. Clover Kids may show Bucket Calves, Cats, Goats, Rabbits, Poultry, Sheep, Small Animals (such as hamsters, guinea pigs, fish, pet birds, etc), and Swine. State 4-H rules prohibit Clover Kids from showing animals more than six months of age and no more than 350 lbs. at the time of the show. Safety concerns are sighted for not showing animals beyond these guidelines. (Most feeder calves, all breeding heifers, market beef and horses will not fit in these ranges). Exhib-itors are encouraged to show animals that they can control without endangering themselves, other exhibitors and spectators. Clover Kids are to show only the animals they have listed on the ID sheet. These policies will be enforced for the safety and protection of all youth involved. Keep Up With 4-H News If you want to keep up on the latest information whether it be scholarships, camps, workshops, and other 4-H activ-ities, be sure to check the UNL Saline County Extension website, Facebook page and calendar. Information on a varie-ty of subjects is available but also the latest Saline County 4-H news. Email is the fastest way for us to get information out to you on short notice. If you have not shared your email with us, please do so or be sure to include it on 4-H enrollment forms. We will send you information about workshops, deadline reminders, etc. Showmanship Sponsors The last few years we have awarded duffle bags, embroidered jackets, wind-pants and other items instead of a tro-phy to the Showmanship winners. Although we have sponsors already designated to showmanship awards, we need additional monetary support to be able to supply these awards. If you would like to contribute a monetary donation for Showmanship awards or know of someone who may, your financial assistance support of any amount is welcome. Please call our office at (402) 821-2151 for more details.

Lottery Pig Sign-Up Deadline- March 1 4-H members can sign up for one gilt & one barrow. Delivery at the fairgrounds is tentatively April 9th. Cost is to be around $90-$100/pig. We will have a definite price by March 10th. Youth will randomly be drawn to select the pig(s) of their choice. Hogs will be weighed & youth will be responsible for completing the ID form by June 15. We will offer a limited number of additional pigs if a member wants more than just the Lottery Pig(s) to show at the county fair. These additional hogs will be selected by drawing eartag numbers. Not actually selecting the hog as in the Lottery Division. Additional pigs will be filled on a first come-first serve basis. We do need you to sign up for the number of Lottery Pigs you want, and the approximate number of additional pigs you would like by March 1. If you are on the fence because of pricing, please sign up by March 1st and you can always decline once actual price has been determined.

Recently the Nebraska 4-H livestock advisory committee made changes to the 4-H/FFA livestock identification process for animals exhibited at the State Fair and Ak-Sar-Ben. Both 4-H & FFA will be using EID tags and DNA for all market beef, market goats, market sheep, and market swine exhibited at the State Fair. NOTE: Ak-Sar-Ben however, will require ear notches for swine in addition to DNA. County Fair swine will still need to be ear notched. Breeding animals exhibited at the State Fair and/or Ak-Sar-Ben will need to have a Breeding nomination card completed along with a $2 nomination fee on file at the Extension Office by June 15th. Breeding heifers will require a tattoo (4-H & FFA). Breeding sheep and goats will require a Scrapie tag for commercial animals and Scrapie tag & number matching registration papers for purebred animals. There WILL NOT be any online identification. Please refer to the chart below and at this link: http://ow.ly/Wo02H More information and form of animal identification can be found at: http://ow.ly/XBhF0 Youth will have until Aug. 10 (State Fair online entry deadline) to declare if a particular animal will show as 4-H or FFA. However, once you declare an organization at State Fair, you may not switch for Ak-Sar-Ben (4-H show only).

NEW Livestock Identification Changes For 2016

Don’t wait until the last minute to make your animal identifications. You will need to plan ahead. Will animals be shown at County Fair only, State Fair or Ak-Sar-Ben?

Identification documents are different for State Fair/Ak-Sar-Ben so you will need to know BEFORE you come to the office to get tags. Take note that procedures and forms

of identification documents have CHANGED for 2016.

Governor’s Agricultural Excellence Awards The Nebraska 4-H Foundation and the Nebraska Investment Finance Authority (NIFA) is offering The Governor’s Agricultural Excellence Awards which recognize 4-H clubs for the work of the individuals in the club and the community service work of the club. A $500 check issued to the club to be used as described in the award application form completed by the club. Clubs can use the award dollars for many different programs. Conferences or workshops for others in the community, trips or tours for club members, community improvement projects in their home town, campus visits, fair grounds enhancement and inter-generational programs are just a few examples. Any club that did not receive a Governor’s Agriculture Excellence Award in 2015 is eligible to apply. Find the applications at http://ne4hfoundation.org/ and should be emailed to Lori Oberembt at ne4hfoundat [email protected] . The application deadline is March 4, 2016. Please consider “Agricultural” in the broadest terms when you are discussing this program. Contact Lori Oberembt at (402) 472-1178 with questions. 4-H Clover Kids Curriculum Exchange Day A 4-H Clover Kids Curriculum Exchange Day will be held on Monday, February 22, 2016, 1-5pm at the Nebraska Game and Parks Outdoor Education Center (4703 N 44th Street, Lincoln, NE 68504). Adult 4-H volunteers who work with Clover Kids can register as a participant where they will travel around to tables and get ideas for clover kid lessons in the areas of STEM, cultural diversity, social/emotional development, ag literacy, and literacy; they can also register as a table host, where one idea of their own Clover Kid Lesson is shared with participants. Register by February 8, 2016, by calling 402 821-2151 or email [email protected] News Reporters Are you the news reporter for your club? We have a job for you! 4-H Clubs are encouraged to send pictures and news of your club so we can share your news and community service projects with others. You are doing some neat things and we want to share and challenge others to share their news and projects. We want to celebrate your successes so please let us know what is up! New 4-H Project - My Financial Future From organizing finances to learning about savings, risk management, and consumer breadcrumbs, the My Financial Future curriculum helps middle and high school youth develop critical skills and knowledge in money management. Participants learn about financial literacy concepts through case studies and real-life scenarios. Watch for fair classes in fairbook.

~ NEBRASKA 4-H MONTH ~

February has been designated as Nebraska 4-H Month. This year’s theme is “4-H Grows Here” With enrollments due March 1st, Nebraska 4-H month is a great time to have your first club meeting of the year, organize a new club and a time to share with others what 4-H means to you or recruit new 4-H members to your club. Use this time to recognize your club and project leaders for their time and service to your 4-H club. When using social media to share 4-H highlights from your county during Nebraska 4-H Month and beyond, please use the #NE4H hashtag and mention @Nebraska4H so that the statewide social media networks can re-share this information also for increased exposure of the wonderful programs and events that showcase Nebraska 4-H!

NE 4-H Shooting Sports Accepting Ambassador Applications The Nebraska 4-H Shooting Sports committee, along with the National 4-H S.S. Ambassadors in the state of Nebraska are accepting applications for the first N e b r a s k a 4 - H Shooting Sports Ambassadors Team. Applications are due Feb. 11 at midnight. Saline has had 2 National Ambassadors and has youth qualified to be on this team. The selected youth will have a team training in Lincoln March 18-20. To get the application go to: http://goo.gl/forms/UviuBy9GGS. Questions contact the Extension Office. Companion Animal Challenge The second 4-H Companion Animal Challenge will be held on March 12, 2016 at the Animal Science Complex on UNL’s East Campus. It provides youth a chance to participate in a variety of contests that do not require animals, but allow youth to learn more about their dog or other companion animals. Entries are due Feb. 19th. Contests include: demonstrations (a presentation where youth show how to complete a task related to the care of their companion animal); photography and art contests (open to all companion animal projects); Dog Skill-a-thon and Dog quiz bowl. The youth who participated in the event last year said that it was fun and they learned a lot. Youth do not need to be experts to participate in the event. Go to: http://go.unl.edu/4hcac for more information. Progress Shows, Clinics & Other Education Events Please visit the 4-H page of our website under Animal Science, then “Progress Shows, Clinics & Events” as we have added links to progress shows, livestock judging contests, and other educational opportunities for youth. New information is added as it becomes available to us, so check the page often. Jr. Fair Superintendents We would like to have a Jr. Superintendent for each specie/department. The Jr. Superintendent (13-18) would work on ribbon entry on an I-pad. If interested give Eric a call. No experience needed. Jr. Superintendent applicants in livestock areas may not want to be showing the specie they sign up for. This is a great opportunity to add volunteerism to your 4-H Career Portfolio.

Like Us On Facebook In this age of social media, we are looking for new ways to pass along 4-H information to you. Be sure to “Like” our page—Saline County 4H Nebraska.

Premium Auction Thanks to everyone on a job well done! The Market Livestock Premium Auction committee met and began brainstorming for the 2016 event. Youth that participated have received 100% more premium auction proceeds than they did in the 2012 and previous 4-H years. The committee is needing members as we currently have terms expiring in the fall of 2016, 2017, and 2018. If new members don’t step forward to help with planning and implementation the committee will be forced to fold and disperse the remaining funds. Active membership is required.
