SALISBURY. TRADITIONAL. ORIGINAL. Granted a Royal Charter in 1227 to hold its weekly market and annual fair, Salisbury is a city of ageless beauty and captivating history, where medieval magnificence meets contemporary culture. At its heart is Salisbury Cathedral – a beacon which has attracted visitors for hundreds of years. Gathered around the Cathedral is an inspiring city, alive with fascinating people, places and experiences. Here you’ll find excellent shopping opportunities, outstanding arts and entertainment, and a great range of places to eat and drink. There are ample activities to enjoy and a wide range of accommodation to choose from. Salisbury’s story reaches back through the centuries and the city is proud of this rich heritage. Yet it is no stranger to original thinking… In 2020 Salisbury commemorates one of the most remarkable moves in medieval history: the relocation of the Cathedral and its community from Old Sarum to its present day site. A year of celebrations will applaud the audacity required to pull off this incredible feat. From the craftsmen who constructed an outstanding example of Early English Gothic architecture with its 123m high spire, to the citizens who built a thriving commercial centre around it, Salisbury recognises the vision that transformed what was once a modest hamlet into one of the most influential cities in Britain. #Salisbury2020 Throughout 2020, the city of Salisbury and Salisbury Cathedral will be celebrating 800 years of enterprise, culture and innovation with an exciting programme of events and activities. Highlights include: Spirit and Endeavour 25 March-25 October A major art exhibition showcasing works by 20 contemporary artists including Henry Moore and Grayson Perry. Organ Festival Selected Dates May-November Including the hugely-popular Organ Prom, a Family Concert, gala evening organ concerts and Sunday afternoon performances. Makers’ Tale Exhibition 21 May-11 July Presenting new insights into craft methods that are deeply rooted in a historical context, yet connected to today. Salisbury International Arts Festival 22 May-6 June Two weeks of music, comedy, dance, outdoor spectacles and more, exploding into the streets and spaces of the city. Five Rivers Festival 23-24 May Thrilling activities range from river races, stand up paddleboarding and a family river float, to river walks and talks. INSPIRATION AND INGENUITY A centre for creativity and innovation, Salisbury has been captivating visitors from the 13th century onwards. Today, its outstanding venues, wide-ranging cultural opportunities and authentic festivals and events continue to fire the imagination. Under the banner of Wiltshire Creative, Salisbury Playhouse, Salisbury Arts Centre and Salisbury International Arts Festival embrace the contemporary, the traditional and the (occasionally) downright eccentric. Add three seasons of live performances at City Hall into the mix – as well as exhibitions, concerts and more at attractions including Salisbury Cathedral, Mompesson House and The Salisbury Museum – and you have an enormous variety of entertainment to choose from throughout the year. In and around the city you can enjoy drama, dance and musical theatre. Orchestras, choirs and bands. There are cuckoo and craft fairs. Talks and tours. History and food & drink festivals. Entertainment for adults and children. Both indoors and out. With so much going on throughout the day and into the early hours, Salisbury has been awarded Purple Flag status – the ‘gold standard’ for a great night out. For further details of what is happening in and around the city during 2020 go to visitsalisbury.co.uk/2020-events Chas H Baker is the place to go for classic and contemporary menswear. Or Roly's Fudge Pantry to sample the sweetest of treats. For hustle and bustle you can’t beat a good market, and Salisbury has markets in abundance. Artisan, teenage and vintage markets. Farmers’ and street food markets. Continental markets and an ever-popular Christmas Fayre. First prize for longevity, though, goes to Salisbury’s Charter Market which has been drawing people to the city – every century, every week, every Tuesday* and Saturday – for nigh on 800 years. *Except the third Tuesday in October. Go to visitsalisbury.co.uk/shopping to find out more. A GREAT PLACE TO SHOP Salisbury city centre retains its original medieval layout, with parallel streets running north/south and east/west, forming ‘chequers’ where they meet. The 14th century Poultry Cross and historic street names such as Butcher Row and Fish Row provide clues to the trades that were plied here in times gone by. Nowadays, half-timbered buildings rub shoulders with modern shopping centres housing many of your favourite high street stores. The city is also renowned for its excellent range of quirky independent retailers, where the curious will come across unique and individual items, many designed and crafted locally. Head to Fisherton Mill for an array of inspiring arts and crafts. Annie’s Just Jane for fine lingerie and swimwear. Or Regent Tailoring for timeless design with British heritage at its core. Darkness to Light 2018 With the tallest spire in Britain, Britain’s largest cathedral close and cloisters, the world’s oldest working clock and the finest of only four original 1215 Magna Carta manuscripts, Salisbury Cathedral is the city’s most iconic landmark. Expert guided tours of Salisbury

As well as breathtaking attractions, Salisbury has plenty of parks and green spaces where you can enjoy a picnic, go for a romantic stroll, or simply sit and watch the world go by.

Surrounded by rolling chalk downs and lush green water-meadows, Salisbury is often referred to as the city in the countryside. To the north, the vast expanse of Salisbury Plain is home to many rare and endangered species. To the west lies the rich, undulating landscape of Cranborne Chase, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Travel south east and you reach the glorious open heath and ancient woodland of the New Forest National Park.

In an area renowned for its exceptional chalk streams and rivers, Salisbury stands at the confluence of the Avon, Bourne, Ebble, Nadder and Wylye. Between them, these waterways offer scenic riverside walks, excellent fishing and the chance to spot an abundant variety of flora and fauna. Nestled beside the River Wylye, the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust reserve of Langford Lakes is a popular stopping-off point for a host of wild birds.

The Salisbury area offers exceptional opportunities for exploring under your own steam, with quiet country lanes, plentiful footpaths, and miles of ancient drove roads. Walkers can stroll across the water-meadows for outstanding views of the Cathedral. Follow the river north to Old Sarum. Or join long-distance routes such as the Clarendon Way and the Avon Valley Path. Organised walking tours are also available, from specialists such as Alison Howell’s Foot Trails and Guided Walks in Wiltshire. Cyclists can tackle the 160-mile Wiltshire Cycleway, National Routes 24 and 45 of the National Cycle Network and part of the National Byway. Or take it easy on The Golden Way, a gentle circular route linking the Cathedral and Old Sarum.

Go to visitsalisbury.co.uk/things-to-do to discover more.

These days we’re all so busy. 24/7 this, 5G that. Sometimes you just need to step off the world for a while. On a visit to Salisbury you can be as active – or otherwise – as you wish.

Apply all your powers of deduction to save yourself from captivity at Live Escape Rooms Salisbury or Salisbury Escape Rooms. Channel your inner Sherlock Holmes as you find your way around the city by solving clues on a Treasure Trail or Text Quest. Reveal your inner creativity on a craft workshop at Fisherton Mill. The Red Lion Hotel Salisbury is one of the most historic places to visit in Wiltshire. Celebrating its 800th birthday this year, we’re Europe’s oldest purpose-built hotel. We’re certainly one of the most unique hotels in Salisbury city centre, if not the whole of Wiltshire. Working in partnership with Salisbury Cathedral, which is also celebrating its 800th birthday, there are many exciting events centred around the cathedral to enjoy throughout the year. The Red Lion Hotel is just a ve minute walk from Salisbury Cathedral, making us the ideal place to stay for anyone looking to visit Salisbury for some culture.

Salisbury Cathedral

MORE THAN MEETS THE EYEAs well as being an outstandingly beautiful building, Salisbury Cathedral is home to the best preserved of only four original Magna Carta documents, dating from 1215, set in an interactive exhibition explaining its significance.

For the adventurous, a tower tour takes you behind the scenes to the base of the famous spire, for panoramic views of the surrounding water-meadows and city.

Children can follow a fun family trail or use an Explorer Pack to help them get the best experience from their visit.

The Cathedral also houses artworks by Elizabeth Frink, Barbara Hepworth, Lynn Chadwick, Emily Young and William Pye, and is hosting a major contemporary art exhibition from 25 March to 25 October 2020.

Visit www.salisburycathedral.org.uk to find out more.

GETTING HERE IS EASY1220 was a very special year in the chronicles of Salisbury. The foundation stones of its magnificent Cathedral were laid, and work began on what was to become a masterpiece of medieval engineering. In 2020 the city is marking the 800th anniversary of this historic milestone with a year of celebrations. So join us, and be part of our modern-day story…
