Dear Friends of Salish,

At Salish Sea Expeditions, we ignite a passion for science and maritime learning and inspire Washington youth

to expand their educational and vocational horizons aboard our 61’ sailing vessel on the Puget Sound. Will you

join our crew on this bold mission and help us chart our future course?

Salish Sea Expeditions offers three events annually that provide a fabulous opportunity to contribute to our

mission and highlight your support through underwriting sponsorship. Annual sponsorship opportunities

start at the $2,500 level and include recognition for your organization at all three of our events.

Additional levels of support offer a sliding scale of benefits (for details, see pages 2-3).

The spring event in our annual cycle is our Seafood Bash which is scheduled for March 1, 2019 to be held at

the brand-new Landing at Shilshole venue in Seattle. In 2018 the event was held at Mohai and brought

together over 230 influential community members and supporters for an evening of live music, local food and

wine, a delicious dessert dash and our world famous “Crab-Tucky Derby.” Thanks to the help of our sponsors

we raised more than $100,000 for our spring programs. We look forward to surpassing that goal in 2019.

After our Seafood Gala, we host our annual Salish Sea Student Science Symposium. The last Symposium

was held on May 23rd, 2018 at the Bainbridge Island Art Museum and had previously been held at the

University of Washington. This gathering provides a platform for students conducting science research on

Puget Sound to present their work while fostering partnerships between schools, parents and our community.

The final event of our calendar year is our Patrons of Discovery Breakfast which was last held on October

17th 2018. Our featured guests were local students, alongside Lauren Kickham of Vulcan, Inc., Dr Charlie

Eriksen, and former KING5 Meteorologist Jeff Renner who shared in a discussion of science, ocean health and

Salish’s work with this region’s youth. More than 140 individuals and 25 industry partners attended and through

the generosity of our awesome community, we raised more than $55,000.

We invite you to join us as a sponsor, under-writing one of these efforts and becoming part of our legacy. For

more information, and to become a sponsor, please contact us at (206) 780-7848 or [email protected].

Salish Sea Expeditions Overview

Mission: To inspire youth to connect with the marine environment through boat-based scientific inquiry and

hands-on learning, instilling curiosity, confidence, and critical thinking.

Strategy: Using Inquiry Based Learning as a central strategy, we don’t just teach students about science – we

provide an opportunity for students to become scientists, studying the marine environment in the same way a

professional scientist might. Our current floating classroom, the 61’ sailing research vessel Carlyn, provides an ideal

platform for these voyages of discovery. Our new vessel the Elettra III, once online will accommodate more

students and offer year round in an even more optimal floating classroom.

Core Programs: Sound Program- student groups develop original research on

the waters of Puget Sound from their classrooms, and then board the research

vessel for a 1-5 day expedition to gather data to answer the questions they

generated in the classroom. After the expeditions, Salish educators return to the

classroom to synthesize the experience and analyze their data. Students present

their work at the Salish Sea Student Science Symposium.

Organizational History: Founded in the fall of 1994 and awarded non-profit status in 1996,

Salish leaders spent two years in conversations with teachers and in-depth research to prepare

for our first school program in spring 1997.

Salish by the Numbers: Salish Sea Expeditions supports up to 30 scientific expeditions each

school year. Annually, 700-800 students and teachers embark on science research expeditions

aboard Carlyn with up to 500 additional students participating in onshore research and

summer camp in their local watersheds. To date Salish has provided hands-on marine

exploration programs for more than 17,000 students and 1,000 teachers.

Who We Serve: Salish is committed to serving Public Schools and underserved populations through our Low Income

Initiative (40% of all programs serve schools with a significant percentage of students receiving free and reduced-fee lunch

benefits). Students participating in Salish programs are 5th to 12th graders from schools in the Puget Sound region, and a few

out of state schools. Over 25% of Salish students represent diverse populations and 1 in five students attend for free.

What They Say:

Teachers: "The genuine excitement and pride that goes with discovery and self-discovery is such an important part of

learning. I rank Salish as the best educational experience that I’ve ever been able to provide my students.”

– Tom Armentrout, Bainbridge High School teacher

Students: “I used to look out at the Sound and just see water. Then I went out on a Salish trip and discovered the

details below the water. When I got back to school I wondered what details I was missing in all my other subjects.”

– Liz, 11th grade student

Government Leaders: “Ultimately, getting students involved in

and energized by science that supports a healthy Sound will be

fundamental to our success at recovering it.”

--David Dicks, former Executive Director, Puget Sound Partnership

Puget Sound Student Science Symposium: Each year Salish hosts a

gathering for student scientists to present research alongside other

professional scientists.

Cost To Schools for Program in 2018:

• $2800/expedition day (inclusive of classroom visits)

• $100/day/student based on average class of 28 students
