Membership rates for Salmo and District Recreation’s Fitness Centre will increase on July 1st, the Regional District of Central Kootenay announced on May 15th.

“After we met with the Salmo and Area G Recreation Commission and crunched the numbers, we realized there is no way to sustain services unless we increase Salmo’s membership rates. This increase is essential to keep the Fitness Centre operational and it is not a decision that was taken lightly,” said Joe Chirico, General Manager of Community Services.

Salmo has benefitted from the lowest fitness membership fees in the RDCK, partly due to a budget surplus accumulated early in the fitness centre’s existence when the bulk of services were delivered by volunteers. Now that the surplus is gone, rate increases will help to cover staffing and operational costs.

Chirico says low income families within Salmo and Area G can apply for the Leisure Access Program, which reduces membership costs by 50 per cent.

“We want to make sure everyone in the Salmo area has an opportunity to access recreational facilities.”

The RDCK employs a recreation programmer, two part-time employees, one on-call employee, as well as instructors and volunteers who operate the fitness centre, instruct group fitness and other recreation programs in Salmo. The complex itself includes a fitness centre, gym, multi-purpose room, youth centre, kitchen, and a music recording studio.

“Recreation services in Salmo are extremely important to everyone in our area from tots to seniors,” said Hans Cunningham, Salmo & Area G Recreation Commission Chair and Director for Area G. “Our recreation services go a long way toward encouraging community connections, increasing activity levels, and providing opportunities to improve quality of life. We need to keep them affordable and we need to keep them sustainable.”

2013 Annual Kevin Hearne Memorial Soccer CampSVYCC Gymnasium

Our annual soccer camp is back to commemorate the late Kevin Hearne. Native to Salmo, he started his post-secondary playing career at Selkirk College in Castlegar before moving on to the University of British Columbia, where he was recognized as a two-time Canada West First Team All-Star, a two-time Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) All-Canadian, Canada West Player of the Year, CIS Player of the Year and CIS National Championship Game MVP. Kevin was pivotal in leading the Thunderbirds to the 1993 National Championship.

Following his graduation from UBC, Kevin continued to enjoy a successful career in the Vancouver Metro League Premier Division before moving to Penticton. There he played and coached for the Penticton Pinnacles of the PCSL and the Technical Director for the South Okanagan Youth Soccer Association in addition to being employed as a teacher for School District 67. A fierce player and competitor, yet a gentleman off the pitch, Kevin displayed a rare combination of great technical skill, competitive nature, and soft spoken manner which all contributed to making him an inspirational coach, player, and one of a kind person.

Each year a group of Kevin’s old teammates, friends, and family band together to pass on their soccer skills to the Salmo youth by volunteering to host the Kevin Hearne Memorial Soccer Camp. Returning for the 8th consecutive year we want to invite your kids to attend this popular soccer camp. Kids will enjoy learning about the game of soccer and the offensive and defense skills necessary such as dribbling, passing, shooting and receiving, trapping, field position, and throw-ins combined with lots of fun and play! Included in the cost are a team jersey, a team photo, certificates, and a wind-up treat to celebrate their hard work!
