From the Foundation’s Director’s Desk

In these times of mass

communication and technology it

takes allot of talent and vision to

be creative, innovative and

original. Sometimes its easier to

just copy someone else’s ideas

and their work and then pretend

you just invented the wheel.

Still we must not stop creating,

being original and innovative.

Because was it not for the likes

of Benjamin Franklin, Isaac

Newton, the Wright brothers etc.

we would still be in the middle

2. A creative mind or minds

working alone or in synergy. 3. a

destructive mind or minds

working alone or in synergy.

1. There is a saying that goes

like this: Necessity is the mother

of creation. This refers to any

living creature with survival

instincts that will “think” of a way

to get out of a situation or devise

a way to make what needs to be

done simpler.

Think of the bird that uses a

a bank or any other entity

that has something they

want, without having towe would still be in the middle

ages with technology and life

standards.

Creativity is what changed a cell

phone, which was the size of

large cracker jack box, that could

only make phone calls, to a star

trek communication and media

devise that fits in the palm of

your hand. A computer that was

the size of a full grown man

using reel tapes, to today’s apple

IPad. Still with all this technology

do we have more time to do

more things? Wonder why?

Hmmm something to think about

don’t you think?

Back to the creativity subject,

what prompts you to be creative?

Most experts agree that 3 things

can do this, being # 1. Necessity.

Think of the bird that uses a

small stone to break an egg or

the monkey that uses a thin

branch to poke ants out of a tree.

Or an engineer that thinks up a

way to save energy by using the

sun’s rays to create electric

power. The necessity prompted

the organism to CREATE

something that wasn’t there

before to achieve a goal that was

formerly unachievable. 2. A

creative mind or creative minds

working together for something

good. For example a painter who

creates a master piece of art or a

NASA team during the making of

the Hubble Space Telescope or

the scientist making the vaccine

for the N1H1 virus. 3. The

destructive minds of common

criminals thinking up a way to rob

want, without having to

create it themselves. A

terrorist organization also

devises way’s to spread

terror that weren’t

thought of before. Now

you ask what does this

have to do with Salsa?

Everything! in the Salsa

World we create all the

time, new steps, new

music, new courses…it

happens all the time.

There is creation and

innovation, and there are

copy cats there too. But

it’s a compliment to the

creator when he is

copied, cause if he

weren’t any good nobody

would copy his work! And

they copy us allot lately.

WHO IS NATHALIE BRETONECHE?

Nathalie Bretoneche is a universal artist: Latin,European and American all at the same time. She was born on March 28th, 1986 in Vaxjo, Sweden. Her father, Julio Bretoneche, was a young bohemianentrepreneur who had travelled from Peru to Europe insearch of experience and fortune, and he foundeverything he wanted: fell in love with a beautiful andtalented girl from Sweden named Solveig Nilsson, married her, and had three daughters, Adeline and thetwins Sophie and Nathalie.Nathalie’s parents noticed that their baby daughter had aspecial virtue for identifying sounds and music when, with only 12 months of age, little Nathalie could followand make the sounds in perfect tune of the lullabies hemother sung to her and Sophie; and her mother wouldknow, she had studied classical music most of her life. When Nathalie was three years old her family decided tomove from Sweden to Spain, where she grew upsurrounded by music, art, and cultural expressionseverywhere. At the age of ten, she was accepted at theprestigious Cambrils School of Music, where shelearned singing and piano techniques. But her greatpassion for modern music started when, at her earlyteenage years, her father introduced Nathalie to the

A few years past and Nathalie built her ownrecording studio, she learned to produce and mixher own music, refining her style and crafting hersongs at an accelerated rate. Quickly, she startedto perform. She felt the need to share her talentand songs to people, which she did passionatelyand sharply for several years in many stages of theMiami, New York, and Spanish live circuit. Soon, she attracted the attention of R&B luminaries suchas Anita Wilson –vocal coach and arranger whoteenage years, her father introduced Nathalie to the

music he loved: rock from the 60s and 70s, funk, souland R&B. She realized then that there was nothing elseshe wanted to do in life other that to sing, record, andperform in front of people. Little by little, as she evolvedas a singer and songwriter, Nathalie defined her styleand realized that what made her happier than anythingelse was to sing the music that was the mostchallenging to her voice: Soul, Funk, but speciallyRhythm and Blues. Nathalie Bretoneche had found herplace and purpose in life. The family business kept growing and her parentsdecided to move to United States in 2003, where theychose Miami as their new place of residence. Nathaliefelt quite at home within the multi-cultural diversity of thecity, and felt closer to the R&B world she was trying toconquer.

as Anita Wilson –vocal coach and arranger whohas worked with artists like Gloria Estefan, BettyWright, and Jon Secada-, Arthur “Arty” White(guitar), and Rufus Jackson (bass), both of whomhave been on tour with Alicia Keys. With several dozen songs already crafted by her, avoice ready to be heard around the world, a matureenough style to set her apart from the rest, a clearvision of what she wanted to hear in her sound, and surrounded by the best musicians, it wasimminent she had to start working on her debutalbum. So, in 2009 she began to put all the piecestogether and by the end of summer she presentsthe album Livin’ The Life, a superstar album in itsown right, from start to finish. With an all winner nofiller selection of songs, Livin’ the Lifeis awonderfully complex work mainly because it mixesgreat vocal arrangements –created by Bretoneche-with a display of sounds, beats, and a dimension offeelings that could redefine the gender itself. Withthe collaboration of extraordinary producer Owen“Ruddy” Knight, who co-produced the album withher, Bretoneche reaches a fantastic diversity ofmusical resources to help carry her songs aboutpersonal experiences, love and spiritual strength, all delivered in a warm and genuine language thatdescribes the most essential substance of hermusic.Nathalie here with her, also very talented, sister Sophie.

12

Page 13: Salsaruba Mag Feb Mar 2010

The real dimension of Nathalie Bretoneche’s work and talent could not have been

described better than with the words of coach Anita Wilson, when she said, “Nathalie blew

me away. Her music defies normalcy, she is much more than a fresh air to the music

industry, she is redefining it.”

Even though the road has not been short, this is really the beginning of a story that will go around the worldseveral times. Through Livin’ the Life, Nathalie Bretoneche has arrived to stay in the hearts and the culturalbaggage of all those who want to feel good through music.

Salsaruba Magazine was in Miami for some interviews for our nextissues and was granted an excusive interview with this upcoming star ofthe R&B world.

The first thing Salsaruba Magazine took notice of was, how down to earth Nathalie was

and how her natural beauty and incredible talent combined into a truly amazing

multitalented artist. Nathalie's’ twin sister Sophie was also present and No she doesn’t

sing .. She dances and her interview is next in our OUT OF THE BOX article series. After

a few Face Book messages and phone calls to setup the interview, we finally meet at the

building where they reside. Nathalie and Sophie met me in the lobby and after a short

introduction and small talk about the unusually COLD Miami weather on that day, the

interview began and highlights of the interview now follow:

YOU ARE ORIGINALLY FROM?

I was born in Sweden, my mom is Swedish and my dad’s from Peru, when I was three

we moved to Spain where I grew up and lived there till I was 17. Then we moved to

Miami.

IN ARUBA WE SPEAK FIVE AND THAT HELPS WHEN YOUR NOT ON YOUR

ISLAND. THIS IS A BIG ADVANTAGE FOR YOU BECAUSE .. WELL YOUR IN MIAMI!!

Aha, it opens doors for you in the whole world.

YOU SING SINCE YOU WERE … BORN?

Yes since I was born (laughs) when I was one year old my mom used to sing to me, you

know lullaby's and those things and she caught me

Singing a little melody, I actually wasn’t saying the words but I singing the melody. She

said it was perfectly of pitch and it caught her attention, so that’s when I began.

YOU ARE LIVING IN MIAMI FOR 7 YEARS?

Six years..

AND YOU LIKE MIAMI?

I love Miami it’s a great place, it has many cultures and for the music and arts, it’s a

great place to be at.

YOU HAVE SOME PRODUCTIONS AND I HAVE LISTENED TO THEM ON

FACEBOOK. HAVE YOU RECORDED ANYTHING YET?

I did my first CD last year, it was released in September and its on ITunes. Its Called:

They do it they can do anything

AHA AND IF THEY CAN DO THAT……

Maybe they can do a Salsa version of one of my

songs (laughs) maybe…..

DO YOU DANCE SALSA

Yes the basics, actually since our dad is Peruvian,

we used to travel allot to Peru and there they love

Salsa so every Christmas and New Years we used

to dance allot of salsa and its really fun.

DO YOU TRAVEL FRO YOUR SINGING?

I have done it a little bit, I’m going to start this year,

since I have my first material I’m going to get out.

Actually now I’m starting on my second material

and am already writing so I’m getting ready for this.

13

Page 14: Salsaruba Mag Feb Mar 2010

THAT’S RIGHT I REMEMBER READING ABOUT THE TONS

OF INSPIRATION YOU WERE HAVING LATELY, HOW IS

THAT GOING?

Its going great, that’s what I like, I love to write, I also write for

other artists, I’m also going to start placing my songs for other

artists too. I like to do this for me and for them.

ANY GENRE OF MUSIC YOU DO THE MOST?

I like to do a little bit of everything, but the main style that I do

is R&B, Soul and Hip Hop.

ANY PLANS TO GO TO THE CARIBBEAN?

I would love to, it’s one of my dreams actually so if you want to

invite me I will go (Laughs)

SO YOU WRITE YOUR OWN MATERIAL, DOES THIS COME

EAZY?

Yes it comes out all of a sudden, I may be in the shower

singing and a melody comes up so I then get out fast to record

it (laughs)

SO WHAT COMES FIRST THE MELODY OR THE LYRICS?

Sometimes it’s the lyrics sometimes the melody it varies allot.

Usually I start with the piano and then take it from there.

WHO IS YOUR FAVORATE ARTIST ALL TIME?

Stevie Wonder and of course I have other ones too. But

definitely Stevie Wonder is the number one artist ever for me.

ANY FUTURE PLANS NEW YORK, LA?

Actually those two cities are the ones I’m interested to go to

10

Actually those two cities are the ones I’m interested to go to

because it’s a wider industry when you talk about R&B and so.

Miami is great but it focuses a little bit more on the Latin side,

and I really like that cause I’m part Latin. I wouldn’t want to stop

being in Miami cause I love my music in Spanish too.

Nevertheless I like to be everywhere with my music.

THIS YEAR IS NATHALIES BREAKTHROUGH?

It has to be (laughs), I mean I love dong this, its going to come

my time, when things are going to get better. Things can always

get better or worse but I love what I do and I believe that if you

love what you do you will make it.

SO WHAT DOESN’T ANY BODY KNOW ABOUT NATHALIE,

OBVIOUSLY AFTER TODAY THEY WILL (LAUGHS)

Well I can tell you that when I create I stay in the studio for days

I don’t get out of there. I walk around the studio in my pajamas

and I look like a crazy girl but that’s how I can work.

THAT IS REALLY WEIRD … NO JUST KIDDING. HAVE YOU

EVER HEARD OF ARUBA?

Yes.. I have been there actually at the airport. I would really like

to go there and visit. I have heard many good things about it.

WHEN WAS THIS? WAS IT LONG AGO?

Yes it was really long ago, we were little girls then but I

remember it though.

WE HOPE TO SEE YOU IN ARUBA, PEOPLE ARE GOING TO

KNOW YOU THROUGH OR MAGAZINE AND OUR CONTACTS.

ANY CHANCE YOUR CD CAN BE SOLD IN ARUBA?

I hope so too for both things, going to Aruba and having my CD’s

sold there.

WE BELIEVE SHE WILL BREAK THROUGH THIS YEAR, NOT

ONLY BECAUSE OF HER MUSIC THAT BY ITSELF CAN BE

THE REASON FOR THIS BREAKTHROUGH. BUT ALSO

BECAUSE SHE IS A FUN AND DOWN TO EARTH PERSON

WHO HAS ALL THE POTENTIAL TO MAKE IT BIG

Freezing temperatures in Miami? Yep .. Very

cold for South Florida StandardsDuring a recent visit to Miami to interview a few artists for our Salsaruba Magazine articles,

we were confronted with unusual cold weather unseen in South Florida in many years. This

we had to document and as you can see in the pictures Scarf's and Winter jackets were the

dress code for the sun and beach community residing in this town. South Beach at its

coldest. Surprised? We were too, but at night inside the clubs, the winter attire came off and

it was business as usual in South Beach. Locals and visitors had a blast as they usually do.

During a recent visit to MiamiFlorida, Salsaruba Magazinevisited our favorite Salsa andRueda hangout: Yuca, home ofthe Salsa Mia Dance School.

Salsa Mia is a Salsa and Rueda Dance

operates out of the Yuca Cuban

Restaurant located in the famous

Lincoln Road in South Beach.

People have built new friendships, found new

relationships, gotten married!, networked for

their businesses and Salsa Mia is exactly whatSalsa Mía began on February 15, 2005 on

South Beach in Sunny Miami Florida. It

was founded with the spirit of fun,

friendship and social dancing reminiscent

of the Havana Social Clubs of days gone

by. Much more than Salsa classes, Salsa

Mía is a diverse group of instructors,

dancers, performers, musicians and

students from all over the world who share

a common interest, the love of SALSA.

Salsa Mía created our own Salsa

nightclub on Fridays with a LIVE BAND

and sizzling DJs playing the best Salsa,

Merengue, Bachata, Cha Cha Cha,

Mambo and Latin Mix.

Salsa Mia started as a small social event;

a way for local South Beach people to get

together after work and learn to dance

salsa. Over the years our group has

grown and it has given us the chance not

only to get to know each other, but to

make friends with people from all over the

world who come to dance with us.

we set out to be... a place for people to meet

European dance

Dancing through the Ages

Dancing became popular in the 18th and 19thcenturies: from court dancing to RomanticismBy the 1700s ballet had migrated from the royal court tothe Paris Opera, and the director Lully 'preserved theballet du cour's basic concept of a composite form, inwhich the dance was an essential and importantelement.' During this century the ballet was to developthroughout Europe, from a courtly arrangement ofmoving images used as part of a larger spectacle, to aperformance art in its own right, the ballet d'action. Thisnew form swept away much of the artificiality of the court

Early 20th century: from ballet to contemporarydanceSince the Ballets Russes began revolutionising balletin the early 20th century, there have been continuedattempts to break the mold of classical ballet.Currently the artistic scope of ballet technique (and itsaccompanying music, jumper, and multimedia) ismore all-encompassing than ever. The boundariesthat classify a work of classical ballet are constantlybeing stretched, muddied and blurred until perhaps allthat remains today are traces of technique idiomssuch as 'turn-out'.It was during the explosion of new thinking andexploration in the early 20th century that dance artistsbegan to appreciate the qualities of the individual, the

La lezione di danza"(The Dancing Lesson),ca 1741, Venezia,

Gallerie dell'Accademia.

Continuing with our article on the History ofDance we have part two of this series ofhow Dancing may have evolved into whatwe have today. Dancing keeps evolving andwhat many thought was impossible for ahuman being to achieve is now a dailyroutine for many of dancers of the 21st

century. Hope we are shedding some lighton the question of how dancing began.

new form swept away much of the artificiality of the courtdance and strove towards 'the concept that art shouldaspire to imitate nature'. This ultimately resulted incostuming and choreography that was much moreliberating to the dancer, and conducive to a fuller use ofthe expressive capacity of the body. It also opened thedoor to pointework, for this acceptance of morenaturalistic costuming allowed the development of theheel-less shoe, which led to the dancer being able tomake more use of the rise onto demi-pointe.The era of Romanticism in the early 1800s, with balletsthat focused more on the emotions, the fantasy and thespiritual worlds, heralded the beginning of true pointe-work. Now, on her toes, the deified ballerina (embodiedin this period by the legendary ballerina Marie Taglioni)seemed to magically skim the surface of the stage, anethereal being never quite touching the ground. It wasduring this period that the ascending star of the ballerinaquite eclipsed the presence of the poor male dancer, who was in many cases reduced to the status of amoving statue, present only in order to lift the ballerina. This sad state was really only redressed by the rise ofthe male ballet star Nijinsky, with the Ballets Russes, inthe early twentieth century. Ballet as we know it had welland truly evolved by this time, with all the familiarconventions of costume, choreographic form, plot, pomp, and circumstance firmly fixed in place.

began to appreciate the qualities of the individual, thenecessities of ritual and religion, the primitive, theexpressive and the emotional. In this atmospheremodern dance began an explosion of growth. Therewas suddenly a new freedom in what was consideredacceptable, what was considered art, and whatpeople wanted to create. All kinds of other thingswere suddenly valued as much as, or beyond, thecostumes and tricks of the ballet. Most of the early 20th century modernchoreographers and dancers saw ballet in the mostnegative light. Isadora Duncan thought it most ugly, nothing more than meaningless gymnastics. MarthaGraham saw it as European and Imperialistic, havingnothing to do with the modern American people.Merce Cunningham, while using some of thefoundations of the ballet technique in his teaching, approached choreography and performance from atotally radical standpoint compared to the traditionalballetic format. The twentieth century was indeed a period ofbreaking away from everything that ballet stood for. Itwas a time of unprecedented creative growth, fordancers and choreographers. It was also a time ofshock, surprise and broadening of minds for thepublic, in terms of their definitions of what dance was.It was a revolution in the truest sense.

Quite recently a asteroid, the size of a football

Clave - A five-note, bi-measure pattern which

serves as the foundation for all of the rhythmic

styles in salsa music. The clave consists of a

"strong" measure containing three notes (also

called the tresillo), and a "weak" measure

containing two notes, resulting in patterns

beginning with either measure, referrred to as

"three-two" or two-three." There are two types of

clave patterns associated with popular (secular)

music: son clave and rumba clave. Another type

of clave - 6/8 clave - originated in several styles of

West African sacred music.

Conga (drum) - A Cuban drum derived from

several African predecessors - also known as the

tumbadora - originating as a solid, hollowed log

with a nailed-on skin. Eventually, tuneable

hardware was added and today, conga drums are

made out of fiberglass as well as wood.

Here at Salsaruba Magazine we believe and have always stressed that Salsaand Dancing in general is excellent for your health. We search all over for proofof this and in doing this we didn’t have to look far from home. Right here atScol di Baile Pachanga we found a fountain of knowledge with one of ourstudents Dr Carlos Viana who has accepted to assist us in this.

Teens and young adults gravitate to danceevents for socializing. Most major group andfamily “Get Togethers” involve some kind ofsports or dancing.

Besides drinking water and eating wellevery day, physical activity is necessary for ahealthy body. Phyllis and I are lucky enough tolive in Aruba where we can swim in the warmCaribbean Sea twice a week. The ocean is agreat way for pregnant women or those with soremuscles or back pain to get some low impactexercise and relief while also enjoying thedetoxifying effects of the salt water.

For our other workout, we take salsaclasses. Dance lessons are good for the mind, body and spirit. We know the body is workingbecause we can feel the physical effects. But,dance classes also improve the mind becausethey require remembering steps and sequences.Did you know that a medical study showed thattaking dance classes at least twice a week madepeople less likely to develop dementia?Research has also shown that people withAlzheimer's disease remember forgottenmemories when they dance to music they usedto know. Wow, even seniors benefit from dance
