1 Saltford Community Association News Issue No 113 December / January 2014 COPY DEADLINE FOR FEBRUARY / MARCH EDITION OF SCAN: 10th January 2014 Copy sent by email to [email protected] will be very welcome. www.saltfordhall.co.uk The Office Back in the June issue you’ll remember that I talked about the Trustees of the SCA who had over 300 years between them; well now it’s time to tell you about ‘the office’ as I did say I would tell you about that team next time. The team on the front cover work tirelessly to make sure the SCA runs smoothly from day to day often putting in unpaid extra hours and always doing far more for us than their job actu- ally entails. In the middle we have our very own Chris Pope who has a wealth of experience both from being Chairman (now vice chair) of Bath Cats and Dogs home but also from running his own business for many years before taking the easy(!) life working mornings at the hall. Not only does he manage the hall day to day and do a considerable amount of DIY but he can also be seen many evenings helping at events; as indeed can all of the staff. To the left we have Helen Myatt who works mainly Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. To the right we have Kate Vine who works Monday, Tuesday and Friday mornings. The two cover for each other’s holi- days. Helen and Kate maintain the calendar that allows us to control what rooms are booked and when. This is not as easy as it sounds as a dance show may use the hall but it also uses the Avon room and often Kelston too and unless you know who is hiring you’ll end up double booked. We are grateful to Gill Gooding for helping one morning a week in the Office on a voluntary basis. The vast majority of the SCA’s income to maintain this valuable community asset comes from room hires managed by the Office. Helen and Kate also maintain the invoicing system ensuring that we get our revenue in quickly and efficiently. Helen has been with us nearly 11 years; Kate just over 8 and Chris is the youngster at 3 and a half years. So this is the second round of showing you who the people are that keep the lights on at the SCA. We’re always looking for volunteers, so if you fancy joining us to do things for the community then contact us at [email protected]. Next time we’ll see the rest of the crew! An Update on The Hall

It’s been a busy last couple of months with bookings at the Hall well up, which is bril-liant. This has allowed us to make further improvements to the fabric of the buildings we look after.

The most significant item has been the installation of a new fuel efficient combi boiler in the Wansdyke Room, which is the separate building at the back of the Hall. The nearly 40 year old gas boiler for heating and the very expensive to run electric immersion heater for the hot water have both now been replaced with a single new gas boiler and just in time for the colder weather. We are extremely grateful to Francine Haeberling for providing a community grant to cover most of the cost of this. During the winter break we now intend to complete the redecoration of all the internal Wansdyke Room walls/doors, to complement the external redecoration done during the summer.

Also in the last couple of months we have completed the extensive work to improve our stage area and sound and lighting. Following the successful work to stop the Green Room area flooding earlier this year, we have now repaired all the water damaged doors. We have also completed the extension of the sound and light room.

As we said in the last edition of SCAN, this now means that we have spent over £50,000 in just the last 2 years on maintenance and improvements to the Hall. We are in the process of applying for a significant grant to allow the installation of a lift to make the upstairs rooms accessible to all. We will also be looking to make major improvements to the energy efficiency of the main building.

None of this work has been possible without the great work of the Office staff at the Hall (see front cover), the donations you provide, the money we make on fundraising events and the income we derive from hiring out the Hall. In whichever way you may contrib-ute, thank you so much for your support over the last few years.

We hope the above update is interesting and tells you how we have been enhancing this valuable community asset. If you want to get involved in anyway, then we’d love to hear from you - please e-mail [email protected] or ring the Office on 01225 874081.

tragic death 17 year old Jack Boulton, while playing football locally in 2009.At the same time as asking for your support of this event we would warn you that some roads could be congested for a little time on that day between 11.00am to 12.30pm and if you have a time critical journey to make please take this into consideration. All our entrants have been advised not to street park but to use designated car parks during the time they spend in Saltford. We sincerely hope you will enjoy the inaugural Saltford Santa Dash and join in with this festive spectacle in any way you can.More information can be found on our web-site www.saltfordsantadash.webs.com

An Appeal from a Saltford Resident from the 1940sI wonder if anyone can help me? I lived in Saltford during the 1940’s and was a pupil at the village school when it was next to the church in the High Street.I wonder if there are any records of those who went to school with me in those far off days and if so is there any way I could contact someone? Maybe a present pupil has grandparents living in the village? My name was Jackie Phillips, at that time, and I lived at Ship House at the bottom of Saltford Hill. I attended Saltford School from 1940 – 1946. The headmistress was Miss Martin.I realise this is a long shot but perhaps you could suggest another way I could get infor-mation as I understand the old school building is now a Community Centre and perhaps I could contact someone there if I had the address? My reason for making enquiries after all this time is because I have written a book about life in Saltford during the war years, from a child’s viewpoint and would gladly send a copy for the school library, if permitted but would also like to let any of my con-temporaries know about it.Names of fellow pupils I would be particularly interested in tracing:Hilda Durston, Robin Webber, Judy Baker, John Hill, Betty LavingtonJackie Smith, 4 Hampton Close, Torquay, Devon TQ1 4PS

Saltford Brass MillUnfortunately at the time of going to print the Mill remains closed. We are hopeful that B&NES will find the finance to undertake the necessary work so that Saltford’s Ancient Monument can be opened to visitors once more. In the meantime off site talks are be-ing given to interested groups. Please make contact as shown below.www.brassmill.com - email [email protected] - 01225 872954

Saltford Business Network

Saltford Business Network (SBN) has close to 50 members representing a significant proportion of Saltford businesses, large and small. They are listed on the Business Directory page of the SBN website. The main objectives of the network are to sup-port Saltford businesses and to encourage local residents and companies to use Saltford based businesses. Subjects for business seminars are decided by the mem-bers, and have included Social Media for Business (Noisy Little Monkey), Finance (Neil Evans, Barclays) and “De-stressing in the workplace” (Liz Walton). A consulta-tion event was held on the issue of re-opening a railway station at Saltford. We also hold bi-monthly social gatherings in Saltford’s pubs and clubs as an opportunity to discuss the issues of the day with other business people.

Full membership through to the end of 2014 is available now for £20 which includes an enhanced web-site entry. A simple listing in the directory is available for free to any local business that registers. For more details visit www.saltfordbusinessnet-work.org.uk

David Hewett of iTeam Solutions says “Saltford is a great place for business because of its location between two cities and its good communications. SBN is a dynamic, growing organisation and a great source of support and information. I recommend all businesses in Saltford and business people resident in Saltford to join or renew for 2014”.

PAST FUNDRAISING EVENTS

Blue Notes Jazz Evening - Saturday 28 September 2013With Saltford’s very own Ron Brown performing on trombone, this event was guaran-teed to be a hot ticket and it was, with a virtual sell out at 150. The band played wonder-ful jazz music together with the lovely voice of Hannah Wedlock. During the evening a beef curry or non curry vegetarian meal was served, along with rice and freshly cooked popodoms, all washed down with plenty of Moles beer. The evening made a fantastic £1200. Below is a selection of photos taken on the evening, including Hannah’s daughter!

Comedy Showcase - Saturday 12 October 2013This was the first in what may become a regular series of comedy nights at the Hall, in association with Sal Monello. For this first event he lined up top comedians Danny Buckler, James Michael Alderson and Wayne Shakespeare. Hot food was provided prior to the entertainment starting and the evening was enjoyed by an enthusiastic crowd. The next event is planned for 22 March 2014 when Sal will be putting on more of a modern variety show. See next SCAN for more details.

The stated priorities are provision of food, water and shelter. Keynsham Rotary support “End Polio Worldwide Day”

Keynsham Rotary members, with the support of Salt-ford Golf Club, are organising a Putting Competition on 28th October starting at 1pm. They hope to raise over £250, locally, in aid of the Rotary International End Polio campaign.

This is a community school locat-ed 10 km outside the town of Jinja, in a very poor rural area and providing education for over 200 lo-cal village children aged 12-16 years. Mutai school is a community school, which In Uganda means the land and school belong to the local people. It is very well run with committed hardworking staff led by an excellent head teacher.

I would like to extend sincere thanks to the management of the Keynsham Co-operative store who have been so supportive in a number of our fundraising projects.”

ending polio worldwide. Huge progress has been made with the number of cases down by a stag-gering 99% so we are nearly there!”

Polio is a highly infectious, crippling and poten-tially fatal infectious disease.

The world has progressed from having 125 polio endemic countries to a position where there are now just three; Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. Because there is no cure, the only protection against polio is prevention. For the small price of vaccine, a child can be protected against this crip-pling disease for life.

Regular immunisation activities in these countries will have a significant and positive impact. We have not had polio in Great Britain and Ireland for a long time now, yet many people aged 60 years and over will remember fears about the use of swimming pools or swimming in the sea during hot summers. They will also have vivid memories of victims in iron lungs.

Mutai School in Uganda.

Club members and friends raised over £750 at a Harvest Festival supper with a difference. Auction-eer Norman James expertly and humorously sold everything from cakes and pies to chutney, soft toys to sloe gin at a lively event held in the village hall at Compton Dando.

As part of their International fundraising obliga-tions (Rotary also support local Charities) Keyn-sham Rotary have succeeded in gaining matched funding from Rotary District 1100. The money raised will secure provision of Science equipment and books to Mutai school, near Jinja in Uganda. The funds will be invested through the Bujagali Trust which is an Educational Trust working in Uganda with Trustees based in Bristol.

Uganda is one of the poorest countries in the world with 77 per cent of its population under the age of 30 years old. Provision of Education is a priority.

KEYNSHAM & SALTFORD WINE CIRCLEOur Annual Winemaking Competition was held in October. Whilst the wines were being judged by Peter and Carol Coombs and Marg Gittins (all National Wine Judges), our good friend Vernon Groves gave us a tutored wine tasting of two white, one rose, two red and a dessert wine.Regarding the two white wines (Chardonnay) one from S.E. Australia and one from Chile, after making a comparison, the one from Australia was recommended the best. Likewise with the two red wines, (Cabernet Sauvignon) from S.E Australia and Chile, the Australian wine came out tops.As for the home-made wine competition, the judges thought that the wines were very well made overall, without any major faults in them. The results were:White Dry: Percy MellorRed Dry: Terry BleachRose Med. Saltford Evening W.I. October/NovemberAs it was time to recruit new Committee members for the next 12 months we did not have a speaker for our October meeting. To compensate for this great loss we were asked to bring old “snap-shots” from childhood. We then had to risk losing friends by trying to fathom out which “snap-shot” fitted the adult ‘vision’! All were in black and white but no sepia ones appeared.Black & white snapshots from long, long agoTaken when young - no wrinkles on showNo wonder we looked so fresh and carefreeWith most of them taken before we were three! Our President read through the year’s programme and was unanimously duly elected for a further year. We were very fortunate in having a lovely sunny day for our trip to Tredegar House, the National Trust property near Newport. The grounds especially were lovely and an appetising lunch was available which most of us enjoyed. We look forward to suggestions for further day outings.

At our November meeting we enjoyed an early taste of Christmas as our Speaker was a Choco-late Maker! She generously passed round slivers of plain and milk samples blissfully culminating in a whole round Champagne flavoured choc. to tickle our taste buds. The front table exhibited bars of plain, milk and bags of various flavoured choco-lates for sale and they were hard to resist as the queue proved. Thorntons had better watch out!

Guides are busy bees! This term 2nd Saltford Guides have been work-ing together with Saltford Environment Group to improve habitats for insect and bees in Saltford. The Guides are working towards their ‘Community Action’ badge and have undertaken the project of improving habitat for insects and bees in our local environment. After learning all about bees and bugs, their diets and the threats to them in modern society, the girls set about making their own bug hotels. Using a range of materials the girls got their hands dirty with saws and screwdrivers to construct their hotels. Each hotel is unique and handmade by the Guides, you can buy yours at the Guiding stall at the Christmas Market on 30th November in Saltford Hall! Hurry or they might fly away! The project continues throughout the year so look out for us out and about checking up on our bugs!

“Swing into Life; Swing into Action”, an event for Saltford Seniors, was held at Saltford Hall on Tuesday 29th October. This was an energising afternoon giving information about personal safety and healthy living organised by Saltford Parish Council in conjunction with B&NES Council. Age UK, Dial-a-Ride, West of England Care and Repair, the B&NES Active Lifestyle team and the local Police Community Sup-port were all represented. As well as listening to presenta-tions, Saltford Seniors took part in tai chi and chair-based exercises. Tea and cakes were provided by Saltford Evening WI and the Saltford Fairtrade Group. Entertainment was provided by George King of KLOGS who sang a number of songs. Raffle prizes were donated by the local Co-op and Tesco. Everyone enjoyed the afternoon immensely. Thank-you to everyone who supported it.

Cllr. Duncan HounsellChair, Saltford Parish Council

The results of B&NES’ consultation on the implementation of a 20 mph speed limit for Saltford (exclud-ing the A4) were: 68% agree with the proposal, 27% disagree, 3% said neither. A statutory consultation on Traffic Regulation Orders will follow, with probable implementation in March 2014.

B&NES Council is developing a Placemaking Plan which allows local communities the opportunity to indicate where developments such as housing might go. However, Saltford is NOT suggested as a place for additional housing in B&NES draft Core Strategy. Nevertheless, the Parish Council has still been tasked with describing the settlement and environs of Saltford. From 26 November to 6 December 2013 there will be a Placemaking Plan area on our website where you can see these descriptions of the different parts (zones) of the Parish. Give us your comments on these descriptions before the full set is sent to B&NES.In an effort to remove graffiti from the village, everyone is asked to report instances of graffiti to the Par-ish Clerk giving clear details of the location and if possible a photo and details of the likely ownership of the property. These will then be recorded, reported as appropriate and followed up.A reminder to local groups that the Parish Council will consider applications for financial assistance from organisations whose activities are in the interest of and will bring direct benefit to Saltford or its inhabitants. You can download an application form from the ‘Council Responsibilities’ page on our website or request one from the Clerk.

Saltford “A Fairtrade Village”

Saltford “A Fairtrade Village” signs were erected Monday 21st October at the entrances to Saltford on the main A4. The signs were commissioned by Saltford Parish Council and installed by local sign-maker “Signs of Saltford” fol-lowing achievement of Fairtrade Village Status earlier this year. Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. Fairtrade Village Status for SALTFORD is recognition of a caring community that wishes to use purchasing power to make the world better for people where they live. Fairtrade provides agreed, stable and sustainable prices for products, enabling workers in the Developing World to earn a proper living. It can provide extra payment to invest in communities - for example a school, health clinic, new roads, training, equipment and micro credit. Building up their strength benefits us in the UK as economic partners. To achieve Fairtrade Village status, the Saltford Fairtrade Group needed to achieve 5 key objectives including the support of the Parish Council and evidence that Fairtrade products are being used and promoted in Saltford retail and catering outlets, workplaces and community organisations. A portfolio of evidence was submitted to the Fairtrade Foundation earlier this year. Gill Self said “I am delighted with the new signs and thank Saltford Parish Council for installing them. We must always remember our purpose– increasing the use of Fairtrade products can make a real dif-ference to people’s lives and help ensure trade is really fair.”Cllr. Duncan Hounsell, Chair of Saltford Parish Council said “Saltford Parish Council supports the Fairtrade movement. Fairtrade Village Status is another mark of the community spirit in Saltford and the wish to give a helping hand to others. These new signs will not only promote Fairtrade but give passing motorists a positive message about Saltford and its people.”

Caring For Carers

It’s an unseasonably warm Friday afternoon at the Carers’ Centre in Radstock, and a group of unpaid carers of varying ages are taking advantage of Barry Hulme’s watercolour class. “The thing about watercolour,” says Barry, “is it takes more care than with oil or pencil drawings. If you make a mistake, it’s not easy to put right.”

The carers come from a variety of backgrounds, a former GP and BBC costume designer amongst them.

Page 31: Saltford Community Association News · our stage area and sound and lighting. Following the successful work to stop the Green Room area flooding earlier this year, we have now repaired

31

They’re here to meet new people and learn a new and absorbing skill. But they’re also here to take a break from an activity we may all have to undertake at some time in our lives. Looking after a friend or relative who has become frail, physically or mentally ill, disabled or is experi-encing drug or alcohol problems.

The Carers’ Centre is based in Bath and Radstock and aims to give carers a break from their caring as well as renewing their confidence. It also supports them to become more socially active and get back into the job market

To help them do this, volunteers like Barry are invaluable. As well as leading the watercolour class, he also volunteers as a driver, taking carers to many of the “Give Us A Break” activities that the charity runs.

For Barry, volunteering has taken up a huge part of his life, especially since his retirement from the utili-ty supply industry. As well as setting up a youth club in Clandown and serving as a school governor, he’s also worked with volunteers for the BCVS and Millenium volunteers. He’s a keen music fan and spent 16 years helping in the welfare tents at the Glastonbury Festival. “I’ve always enjoyed volunteering,” says Barry, “but it’s a two way street. It keeps me active and I get to meet and help many lovely people.”

The Carers’ Centre is always looking for new volunteers to help support its carers. Volunteers can help our telephone service, drive our carers to events and activities and provide admin support in our busy office.

If you think you might be able to help us, call the Carers’ Centre on (01761) 431388 or email us at [email protected]. www.banescarerscentre.org.uk

As well as these meetings which cater for every age group, we are unashamed in saying that what we primarily offer is not just a community service

but a real Person that has given many people a new start, a tangible hope, and an amazing love and compassion that has been a wonderful surprise to many. Our close friends and family can listen and sympathise; some may be able to empa-thise. There are, however, situations and circum-stances in life that only God can fully understand.We do not offer religion, but we present the real Jesus Christ without ritual or money getting in the way. This is why every meeting in the church is free. You will not be asked for money at any time, as it is just good to see you and your family. You are our guests and therefore it is an absolute privilege to welcome you to our warm and friendly fellowship.-------------------------------------------------------------CHRISTMAS EVENTS;
