502 2 The Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time – July 3, 2016 Pastor’s Corner SALUTATION FROM YOUR NEW PASTOR Reverend Timothy E. Byerley, Ph.D. Dear St. Peter’s Parishioners, Perhaps it would be helpful if I began by saying that in my perspective, continuity is vitally important for a parish. Parish life touches the very depths of a believer. In a chaotic and rapidly changing world, people look to their God and their Church as a place to find the stability and constancy in which to anchor their personal and family lives. This is why a change in priestly personnel is so difficult. A change of pastors is a disruption in our parish life and in our interior life. Our one source of stability in an insane world becomes threatened. When that pastor is very talented and charismatic, this change is all the more dramatic. Thus we see the importance of continuity in a parish. Every parish in the diocese has its own character, its own gift, its own identity, and its own special features. The identity of a parish must be preserved, so that the gift it represents for the people of the diocese continues to be available and bear fruit. In the case of St. Peter’s we have a parish that upholds traditional Catholic values and offers a profound life of worship and devotion. It is a place where families can feel secure and where children are educated in the most beautiful dimensions and customs of our faith from the very beginning. It is a place where believers who share authentic Catholic values can connect with others of the same mindset. It is a place where the finer aspects of liturgical worship are appreciated and sought after. It is a parish where people expect inspiring preaching and teaching to illuminate and deepen their relationship with Jesus Our Lord, and where the Holy Eucharist is loved, revered, and placed at the heart of parish life. In short, St. Peter’s is what Fr. Anthony called, “An oasis of orthodox Catholic faith.”

The Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time – July 3, 2016Pastor’s Corner

SALUTATION FROM YOUR NEW PASTOR

Reverend Timothy E.

This parish identity must be upheld and preserved. It is a gift not only to our parishioners, but to the entire diocese, and even those beyond our diocese. It will be my first priority as pastor to maintain this identity. Closely related to achieving this goal is the excellence of St. Peter’s School. Therefore, my second priority will be to preserve and enhance the great educational tradition of our parish school. The unique identity of St. Peter’s Parish has a long history. Certain pastors have marked this identity in a special way. I think of Msgr. Fallon, who enlarged this church, erected this sanctuary and built up this community with firm yet compassionate leadership. In a similar way, Fr. Anthony left his mark upon St. Peter’s. Fr. Anthony is a pastor of extraordinary calibre. He is first of all a stellar parish priest, who serves his people in the classic sacerdotal manner with a tremendous spirit of zeal, sacrifice and pastoral sensitivity. When he performs ordinary priestly duties like weddings, funerals, sick calls and hospital visits, he transforms them into profound moments of encounter with Christ. He is a captivating and inspiring preacher, and an effective teacher of youth. He is a pastoral administrator of immense competence. He is a creative liturgist who always raises the bar when it comes to adoring God in sacred worship, art, architecture, music, sanctuary appointments and liturgical processions. “All for the glory of God!” Not once in his priestly life has Fr. Anthony yielded to the spirit of minimalism that has crept into modern parish life. Fr. Anthony is also a champion fundraiser, because he bonds with his people on multiple levels and thus can encourage them to make sacrifices for worthy causes. He dreams big and executes on a grand scale. The motivating factor for Fr. Anthony in all this is love, love for Jesus, love for his Catholic faith, and love for his people. Fr. Anthony, then is one of those pastors who has left an indelible mark upon St. Peter’s. I do hope he will return for special occasions. Well, my friends, one does not replace Fr. Anthony! One does not fill his shoes, although one may try to follow in his footsteps. I will do my best, but I am sure you will forgive me if I fall short of the mark at times. Some of the things that Fr. Anthony does in the Lord’s name are unique to him. They are his God-given charisms, and his alone. Certain things could never be duplicated by another. I am sure you understand this. That is why you are so sorry to see him go. One thing immediately comes to my mind that I know I will not be able to measure up to Fr. Anthony. I promise you my friends that you would never want to taste one of my meatballs! Don’t expect an Irishman to excel at this. I am assured of the support and assistance of our Parochial Vicar, Fr. Larry Polansky and our wonderful parish staff. But your support and help are essential in order to preserve the gift of St. Peter’s that you so treasure. I believe that with the grace of God the parish will prevail. Well, this has been a traumatic time for you. I know it is difficult. To lose a beloved priest is like losing a family member. I also know that St. Peter’s parishioners are mature, well-formed Catholics. I would like to recommend something that you are familiar with. Take your interior suffering, your broken hearts and offer them to the Lord: for peace in the world, for persecuted Christians, for the conversion of your loved ones, for Fr. Anthony, who himself, is feeling the pain of separation at this moment. With prayers and blessings, Fr. Tim Byerley

Readings for the Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 3, 2016

TLM – 7th

Sunday after Pentecost – 2nd

Class

Reading I – Isaiah 66:10-14c

Thus says the LORD: Rejoice with Jerusalem and be glad because of her, all you who love her; exult, exult with her, all you who were mourning over her! Oh, that you may suck fully of the milk of her comfort, that you may nurse with delight at her abundant breasts! For thus says the LORD: Lo, I will spread prosperity over Jerusalem like a river, and the wealth of the nations like an overflowing torrent. As nurslings, you shall be carried in her arms, and fondled in her lap; as a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; in Jerusalem you shall find your comfort. When you see this, your heart shall rejoice and your bodies flourish like the grass; the LORD's power shall be known to his servants.

Responsorial Psalm – Psalm 66:1-3, 4-5, 6-7, 16, 20

R. Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.

Shout joyfully to God, all the earth, sing praise to the glory of his name; proclaim his glorious praise. Say to God, "How tremendous are your deeds!"

R. Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.

"Let all on earth worship and sing praise to you, sing praise to your name!" Come and see the works of God, his tremendous deeds among the children of Adam.

R. Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.

He has changed the sea into dry land; through the river they passed on foot; therefore let us rejoice in him. He rules by his might forever.

R. Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.

Hear now, all you who fear God, while I declare what he has done for me. Blessed be God who refused me not my prayer or his kindness!

R. Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.

Reading II – Galatians 6:14-18

Brothers and sisters:

May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither does circumcision mean anything, nor does uncircumcision, but only a new creation. Peace and mercy be to all who follow this rule and to the Israel of God.

From now on, let no one make troubles for me; for I bear the marks of Jesus on my body. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers and sisters. Amen.

Gospel - Luke 10:1-12, 17-20

At that time the Lord appointed seventy-two others whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. He said to them, "The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest. Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves. Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way. Into whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this household.' If a peaceful person lives there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you, for the laborer deserves his payment. Do not move about from one house to another. Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set before you, cure the sick in it and say to them, 'The kingdom of God is at hand for you.' Whatever town you enter and they do not receive you, go out into the streets and say, 'The dust of your town that clings to our feet, even that we shake off against you.' Yet know this: the kingdom of God is at hand. I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom on that day than for that town."

The seventy-two returned rejoicing, and said, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us because of your name." Jesus said, "I have observed Satan fall like lightning from the sky. Behold, I have given you the power to 'tread upon serpents' and scorpions and upon the full force of the enemy and nothing will harm you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven."
