Propitiation Expiation Atonement“I am not concerned to contend for the
word ‘propitiation’. I do not find it an elegant word, nor one which is easily
understood by most people today. By all means let us abandon it if we can find a better way of expressing what it stands for. But if I am not greatly concerned
about the word, I am greatly concerned about the idea that it conveys.

Propitiation: God’s work for you
“All is now right”
Begins with God; ends with God
“God does not love us because Christ died for us;
Christ died for us because God loves us”.Shows us: the terrible extend to sin and
costliness in dealing with it.
But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law
and the Prophets testify. God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his
blood--to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed
beforehand unpunished--he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as
to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.
Romans 3:21, 25,26
God’s MotivationThis is love: not that we loved
God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for
our sins.1 John 4:10
Our response:Dear friends, since God
so loved us, we also ought to love one
another. 1 John 4:11
