2

The act of bringing together different yet complementary IP assets (e.g. patents, software,

design, know-how etc.) in a joint offering whereby a more integrated and complete "product" package can be made available to the market in a more

efficient manner.

What we mean by «Joint Licensing»

3

Opportunity envisaged in the course of the last meeting in Noordwijk (ESA premises)

A way to concretise collaboration intentions and synergies

Each partner can benefit from the support of the others in the exploitation process

Changing paradigm

Why to try to jointly license our R&D results

Changing paradigm

5

Main steps:

To detect areas where TTO Circle members collaborate

To detect how collaborations take place (and under which type ofrules)

To identify the results achieved (or to be achieved) by each partner

To assess the opportunity to combine the results in order to jointly promote their take-up

Our approach to joint licensing

Database of FP7 projects (E-Corda)

Selection of projects according to criteria:

- including TTO Circle partners - mainly Collaborative Projects and Contract research (not from

Res Infr, Marie Curie, Nuclear, CSA, MarieCurie)

Analysis of the Annex I (Description of Work), WPs, deliverables and collaborations within WPs

Analysis of the Plan for the Use and Dissemination of the Foreground (PUDF)

Our approach to joint licensing

Large-scale collaborative project “APOLLON”: Multi-APprOach for high efficiency integrated and inteLLigentcONcentrating PV modules

Partners: ENEA, Tecnalia, JRC

Aim: - to develop High concentration Point Focus (PF) and Dense Array (DA) systems based on monolithic and discrete Multi-junction (MJ) technology with a final target cost of 2 €/W.

Duration: 01/7/2008 - 06/30/2013

Example: Apollon project

9

Main WPs:1 Optimisation of Existing MJ Cell technologies2 Advanced MJ Solar Cell3 Development of Point focus systems 4 Development of Mirror Based Spectrum Splitting Systems (MBS3)5 Testing and Performance Evaluation6 Environmental and Economic Assessment

Example: Apollon project

Opportunities:

- to combine WP results

- to detect further resultsCollaborations:

- WP3: ENEA & Tecnalia - development of intelligent module (integrating an MPPT device)

Hurdles and Opportunities

Hurldles Opportunities

Lack of clarity of the agreement in place among partners (e.g. who owns what)

Lack of PUDF

Fragmentation of ownership (results jointly owned by many partners)

# of partners (risk of spill-over)

Number of projects involving TTO Circle partners

Provision of a timely support for results exploitation and IP management

Increase the influence on technology development activities

Increase our outreach by combining our contact networks
