Through work with Moore & Cashell Architects for over 22 years, and her role as a principal for the
Pharmaceutical & Life science unit of Group GSA, Salwa Malik has gained extensive experience,
specializing in all aspects of clean room, life science and hi-tech pharmaceutical facilities; working on
projects in every Australian state and in the South Pacific Region.
Salwa has participated in a broad range of architectural practices, involving feasibility studies, master
planning, design, documentation and construction management. Through her practical experience,
Salwa has become an unmatched contender and a connoisseur in her field.
Due to her exemplary communication skills, Salwa can successfully extract and interpret key
information from clients, as well as thoroughly understand the complexities of statutory codes and
regulations required for GMP facilities. Salwa strives to provide excellence in design that is
contemporary and innovative, flexible and user friendly, as well as economically & environmentally
responsible. Salwa is now a director of alphaplus architecture.

Clean Room Design
Baxter Healthcare - Queensland Compounding Facility
Alphaplus is successfully leading a group of consultants to
deliver a full design for Baxter’s compounding facility in
Queensland. The facility consists of 2 large class B suites
served by Class C/B change rooms & class D/C
preparation rooms, one suite is for compounding under
Laminar Flow and the other is a containment suite. The
facility also includes a receiving warehouse, a temp
controlled store & cool room, packaging & despatch,
micro & QC testing, admin areas, staff amenities and a
Canteen.
Project Budget - 4M.

Baxter Healthcare - Auckland Compounding Facility
The facility is for the preparation of aseptically prepared
IV additives, narcotics, chemotherapeutic and parenteral
nutrition products. 2 Class B suites: one Containment suite
to accommodate 8 cytotoxic drug safety cabinets and
one for compounding under Laminar flow. Each suite is
served by class C & Class D areas.
The facility also includes a temp controlled store & cool
room, packaging & despatch, micro & QC testing, admin
areas and staff amenities.

Corporate Design
Eli Lilly pharmaceuticals
DCOE offices: the design adopts the philosophy of
integrated work space. It includes a large open plan
workstation area designed to encourage collaboration &
interaction between functional groups, focus rooms that
provide a quite environment for focus time/solo work and
media hubs which facilitate collaboration with virtual
teams. The area also includes a number of facilities for
informal small group discussions.

Upgrade of existing staff canteen and kitchen expansion.
The upgrade provides pleasant outdoor dining areas with
the vision that these areas will encourage outdoor
informal meetings as well as group collaboration &
discussions.

Upgrade of site facilities for pedestrian and vehicle traffic,
including all 3 main gates, gate house and visitors & staff
parking.

Warehouse
Waste management building & storage of dangerous
goods – Baxter Healthcare Toongabbie NSW
The facility is for the sorting & storage of the site’s waste
materials.
In addition to storage racking and large classified bins, it
accommodates granulation of plastic pour bottles, shrink
wrap bailers, EPS materials melting & compressing,
storage Stackable liquid waste, an automatic bin washer, flammable & solvent liquid waste storage, corrosive
material waste storage and Clinical waste.
The site will also house 2 large general & cardboard
waste compactors, in addition to the large timber bin.

Compounding Facilities
Salwa had the principal role of designing and
successfully leading the consultant teams for the
completion of Baxter healthcare’s 4 new
Compounding facilities for the preparation of
aseptically prepared IV additives, narcotics and
chemotherapeutic & parenteral nutrition products in
Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne & Sydney.
Sydney’s compounding facility is the largest, a 3500 m2
stand alone building in Toongabbie. The site
accommodates 12 cytotoxic drug safety cabinets,
plus 2 x Robotic IntraVenous Automation equipment,
in addition to 13 laminar flow cabinets plus 3 x Robotic
Intra-Venous Automation equipment in class B spaces
served by class C & Class D areas.
Fresenious Kabi’s new Compounding facility in
Brisbane for the compounding of hazardous &
sensitizing IV drugs in Class II, and cytotoxic Drug
Safety cabinets & parenteral products in Class I.
Laminar flow cabinets in class B rooms are served by
class C & D preparation & change rooms.

Pharmaceutical manufacturing Facilities
Parke Davis Warner Lambert – New Solid Dose Facility in
Sydney, Australia. It involved the relocation of the entire
Solid Dose Process from the Wellcome facility in Sydney
which was being decommissioned as part of Wellcome’s
merge with Glaxo. The facility was a Class C multi level
gravity feed facility consisting of granulation, drying, a
3000kg cone blender, compression and encapsulation,
coating and packaging areas.
Glaxo SmithKline - Granulation suite. The facility is a Class
C suite for the granulation, milling, blending, pressing &
packaging of tablets. It involved the installation of
complex & extremely precise equipment.
Glaxo SmithKline Class D packaging room.
Parke-Davis Warner Lambert - high volume liquids facility.
Class C production & packaging for toothpaste, syrups &
mouthwash. The facility was class 2 hazardous due to the
large percentage of alcohol in mouthwash production. It
also involved complex reticulation of process pipes and
services, including CIP plant, PW plant, alcohol bulk
storage and sugar bulk storage.
Merck Sharpe & Dohme – Vioxx pressing & Packaging
class C suite complex gravity feed facility.
Reckitt & Colman - New toiletries manufacturing complex
including raw material warehousing, sampling &
dispensing, manufacturing, packaging and a finished
goods warehouse.
Grunenthal – ZhongShan China. New Manufacturing
complex including raw material warehousing, laminar
flow sampling & dispensing facilities, blending, tablet
pressing, packaging and finishing goods & finished goods
warehousing. The facility also included QA & micro
laboratories. IPQC, admin offices, staff canteen & plant
rooms.
Malayan pharmaceutical Factory – Malaysia. New solid
dose manufacturing building.
Raza pharmaceuticals – Malaysia. New Class B
Raza pharmaceuticals – Malaysia. Solid dose
manufacturing upgrade.
Parnell – Sydney. New Sterile facility for the production of
veterinary injectables.
Milpharma – Sydney. Liquids manufacturing upgrade.
Pitman Moore – Sydney. New veterinary production
complex, including warehousing, sampling, dispensing,
production, packaging, QC & Microbiology laboratory
plantrooms and an admin building.
Johnson & Johnson – Sydney. Sterilisation plant & sutures
packaging.

API (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient)
Production facilities
Phebra – Sydney. A new facility for the production of
fluorescein Sodium EP 5.2 in class B areas. The facility is
classified as zone 1 & 2 hazardous due to the inclusion of
ethanol in the process as a carrier.
Biotechnology production facilities
Incubation Centre – ZGC life science park innovation
centre. North Beijing, China. 42,000 m2 complex for
flexible and adaptable Biotech Research Development
and Testing.
The facility includes 3 wings of individual PC2 & PC3 cell
culture laboratories for fermentation and purification
operations around a core of shared, specialised
equipment and support functions such as instrument
rooms, media-prep, washing, autoclaving, consumables
store, cool rooms, etc.
The facility includes pilot plants in each wing
incorporating inoculums preparations, dispensaries,
fermentation, purification, vial filling, packaging, change
rooms, etc.
Other common laboratories are located between the
wings includes QC laboratories, an instrument room,
instrument calibration, stability testing, sterility testing, DNA
testing, peptide, electron microscope & dark room,
HPLC’s. The facility is served by administration offices, a
library, an auditorium, meeting rooms, canteen and staff
accommodation
Seeinglong – Shanghai China. One way traffic of
materials & personnel. Class B Xeno-transplantation
Facility for the production of Acheless pain relief, a new
human therapy prepared from Bovine Adrenal Glands.
The product is a living encapsulated cell that is implanted
into terminal cancer patient’s spinal cord for long term
pain relief.
The process involves the extraction of cells under class A
laminar flow, disinfecting & sterilizing, cell separation,
incubation, micro encapsulation, formulation, vials filling
& capping, sterilisation and packaging & warehousing.
The facility also included alcohol dispensing, clean steam,
WFI, CIP, PW & PFW generation systems, sterile gas
distribution and storage & disposal of sterile waste.
Biotech Australia – Sydney. Manufacturing facility for
Human therapeutic products derived from recombinant
gene technology.

National Bio-research Institute – ZGC life science park,
Beijing China. Master plan study for a 45,000 m2 new
National Centre for Biological Research in plants,
animal & zebra fish.
Apart from research laboratories the design includes
Plant Growth rooms and Green House, animal housing
suites, Zebra fish tank, Common labs such as cell
culture labs, DNA sequencing, Histology, Virology,
Immunology, Microscopy, Radiology, electron
microscopy, etc.
The design also includes a central hub that
accommodates amenities, meeting rooms, training
rooms, video conferencing, administrative offices,
information centre, library, canteen, lounge &
common areas, accommodation for 30 visiting
scientists and senior laboratory researchers and single
accommodation in student type apartments.
Beijing Laboratory Animal Research Centre - Beijing
China. The14,000 m2 facility will produce 1-2 million
specific pathogen free rodents per year,
microbiologically and genetically defined for use by
veterinary, medical and scientific research groups to
enhance the validity and reproducibility of scientific
results.
The facility includes an Animal Production Building
where animals are housed in IVC - class 100
individually ventilated cages, in class B rooms served
by change rooms, prep rooms & autoclaves for the
sterilisation of food & beddings, animal testing
laboratories, quality control laboratories and
administrative functions.
