    CONTEXTUAL STRATEGY

    SITE

The armadillos scute and carapace embodies the ability to shield and shelter itself by means of an armor that is flexible enough to accommodate various bodily contortions. The proposal is a response to accommodate a platform accessible to the public, providing views to the shore and a reconceived canopy structure for the Main-Science World Skytrain station.

A structural carapace that undulates according to the growth of the platform is generated as a response to sunlight. What results is a porous membrane of folded weathered steel sheets and three dimensional trussing.

The detail scale harnesses the power of the meta-detail. Therefore a universal system accommodates the various formal contortions that define the volume of the canopy while minimizing mass customization on the detail level.

VARIABLE PLAZAWATERFRONT PUBLIC SPACE - TORONTO, ON2011 RESTORE COMPETITION SECOND PLACE ENTRY

Severed by the Gardiner Expressway from the remaining city to the North, the design understands that it must engage community level objectives along the East-West axis in order to attract local interests. To create a successful public space the design uses a heuristic model of four primary considerations: public art, comprehensive edges, relevant programming, and flexible spaces to accommodate stable and periodic events.

SKY BRIDGEA vertical connection over the Gardiner Expressway brings people directly into the plaza.

LIGHTING AND POWERPlaza lighting is provided in a sculptural form to make the plaza safer. These are coupled with power outlets to facilitate various events like concerts and vendors.

INTERFACE WITH STREETA dense gathering zone with large bands of seating defi nes the edge of the plaza as well as engages with passing pedestrians.

PUBLIC ARTThe on-ramp to the Gardiner Expressway is clad in a video-wall to engage local residents both day and night and create a dynamic backdrop to the plaza.PEDESTRIANS FIRSTThe portion of Queens Quay Boulevard along the plaza is paved in favour of pedestrians. This gives people the right of way over vehicles and allows a fl uid entrance to the plaza.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTThe plaza is served by street car routes, and has a unique station for the plaza to strengthen the identity of the site.

PRESERVATION OF TREESExisting trees are maintained and are used as a primary generator for the plaza.

WATER HYDROLOGYAdequate soft-scaping is provided as well as water-permeable hard-scaping to ensure ground-water infi ltration.

COMMERCIAL PROGRAMThe podium of the tower opens to the plaza and is programmed to interact with visitors and local residents, keeping this space activated.

RESIDENTIAL TOWERExisting parking lot is adapted to corresponding trends which suggest the need for waterfront multifamily housing.

Interest in connections and junctures are reminiscent of the responsibilities of the architect but at a new scale. The newfound testing abilities provided through the means of rapid prototyping allowed the project to evolve with the use of various media, including physical iterations to develop the lamp.

    PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

    2010 SUMMER

Experience at this newly found four person practice provided supported a workfl ow that was heavily dependent on the use of BIM software Autodesks Revit 2011. Within this framework various single family housing units were renovated or added onto and supported by this technology within client meetings and proposals to the city. Another key project involved in was that of a club house in Port Severn where detail development was contributed to.
