The Order of British Columbiawas established by statute on April 21, 1989, to recognize those persons who have served with the greatest distinction and excelled in any field of endeavour benefiting the people of the Province or elsewhere. The Order represents the highest form of recognition the Province can extend to its citizens.

It will be awarded annually to the most outstanding British Columbians possessing the above qualifications.

Nominations will be considered by an Advisory Council. The Chancellor of the Advisory Council is the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia.

Members of the Council are: ţ The Chief Justice of British Columbia, Chair

ţ The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly

ţ The President, in turn, of British Columbia’s Public Universities, for a two-year term

ţ The President of the Union of British Columbia Municipalities

ţ The Deputy Minister, Intergovernmental Relations Secretariat

ţ Two past recipients of the OrderAppointments to the Order will be made by the Lieutenant Governor in Council on the recommendation of the Advisory Council.

EligibilityAny resident of British Columbia, or former long-term resident, who has demonstrated outstanding achievement, excellence or distinction in any field of endeavour benefiting the people of the Province or elsewhere.

Fields of endeavour may consist, for example, of community leadership, business, labour, industry, volunteer service, professions and other occupations, research, culture, arts, sports and others.

Federal, provincial and municipal elected representatives are not eligible for appoint-ment to the Order while they remain in office.

A person may not be appointed to the Order posthumously unless the Advisory Council recommends the appointment to the Lieutenant Governor in Council before the person’s death.

About the Order of British ColumbiaThe insignia of the Order of British Columbia is the visible mark of its honour and is in the form of a medal.

The medal is a stylistic dogwood (British Columbia’s floral emblem), featuring a crowned shield of arms.

The recipient may wear a full-size medal of the Order suspended from a ribbon which passes around the neck. Female recipients may, if they choose, wear the same full-size medal on a bow attached to the dress on the left side.

A lapel pin button of the Order can be worn anytime with street clothes.

Each recipient of the Order will also receive a Certificate of Appointment signed by the Lieutenant Governor and be granted the right to have the letters O.B.C. placed after their name.

How can I nominate someone? Any person or organization may send to the Advisory Council nominations for appointment to the Order by requesting and submitting a completed form to the Honours and Awards Secretariat. One form per nominee, please.

Nomination Guidelines h Nominations require a nominator and two letters of support.

h The completed nomination form and supporting materials must be submitted as one package. The Order of British Columbia, Honours and Awards Secretariat will not consider incomplete nominations.

h All materials submitted (in part or in whole) in support of a nomination become part of the nomination, thus become the property of the Honours and Awards Secretariat and will not be returned.

h The Secretariat keeps all nominations confidential to respect the privacy of the people consulted and to avoid disappointment of the nominees, and we ask that the nominators and others involved do the same.

Selection Process h All nominations are reviewed by the Order of British Columbia Advisory Council.

Members of the Council are appointed by statute.

h All nominations are confidential. Nominators may be contacted to clarify informa-tion provided, but will not otherwise be contacted regarding the status of their nomination unless their nominee is selected.

h Nominations must be received by June 10th to be considered for an award in the same calendar year.

h Nominees might not be selected in the year their nominations are submitted. Nominations may be carried forward to subsequent years by written request from the nominator. To ensure nominations are current, a nomination can only be carried forward for three years before new material needs to be submitted.

h The Honours and Awards Secretariat reserves the right to limit the amount of supporting documentation accepted as part of the nomination.
