Samaritan Medical Center—A center of healthcare excellence in the Silicon Valley
A message to the community from SMC’s President/CEOI have had the pleasure of leading Samaritan Medical Center (SMC), a 50-year-old family-owned business,
for more than 25 years. The healthcare community has changed significantly during this time, and so has SMC — adding new buildings, incorporating green energy features and developing medical office space capable of hosting the latest technological advances.
What hasn’t changed for Samaritan Medical Center is our dedication to providing physicians and patients with quality medical facilities on our 18-acre campus. Nor has there been any change in the commitment I see every day by the physicians and healthcare professionals on our campus to providing their patients with excel-lent care. Every week, more than 20,000 patients come to the SMC campus — each with a different need, all with the hope and expectation that they will get the very best care from skilled practitioners.
We at Samaritan Medical Center do all that we can to make their experience convenient and comfortable. Since we are not a hospital (You wouldn’t be the first to confuse us with Good Samaritan Hospital, our neighbor to the east!) or a provider of healthcare services, we feel a unique responsibility to partner with our tenants to bring the best possible options for quality healthcare to the community around us.
The result of this effort is the focus of this publication — a look at how the SMC campus has evolved into an emerging center of excellence of healthcare for residents of the South Bay. We are obviously proud of our accomplishments, and prouder still of the outstanding services provided by the 200+ physicians and healthcare providers who are based on our campus.
You have seen our campus from Highway 85 or 17, or while driving down Bascom/Los Gatos Boulevard. Now we invite you to learn more about what goes on in these 20 medical buildings and the impact these services are having on our region.

1918Nathan Lester, his son William W. Lester, and Nathan’s son-in-law William H. Cilker purchase a prune and apricot orchard that is now the SMC campus. The ranch had its own packinghouse and a quarter-mile spur track of the Peninsula Interurban Railway to service it. The Cilker family lived on the ranch until 1950.
1961The Lester and Cilker families gift six acres of its orchard and sell 14 acres to a community group that wants to build a local hospital. The families partnered to develop Samaritan Drive and underground utility improvements to serve as infrastructure for a medical complex.
1965The first buildings on the Samaritan Medical Center campus open — 34,000 square feet of single-story medical buildings.
1980The SMC campus now includes 15 buildings and 110,524 square feet of medical office space, pharmacy, laboratories and healthcare providers.
1992The 2400 Samaritan Drive medical office building with 20,940 square feet is completed and dedicated to Everett Bryan, a past SMC managing partner.
1994Highway 85 opens between Cupertino and South San Jose, adjacent to the SMC campus, providing high visibility and convenient access for patients of SMC physician tenants. An estimated 150,000 vehicles travel past Samaritan Medical Center every day.
2003Construction begins on a five-story parking structure overlooking Highway 85, and the largest building on the campus at 2581 Samaritan Drive. The 75,000-square-foot, three-story building is dedicated to William H. Cilker, a past managing partner of SMC. Campus now has more than 290,000 square feet of office space.
2010Groundbreaking for the construction of a four-story landmark building on the western edge of the SMC campus designed to be an integrated, multi-disciplinary cancer care center. The $22 million building features two linear accelerator vaults for radiation technology used in cancer treatments.
2013Samaritan Medical Center enjoys 98% occupancy in its 20 buildings and provides quality medical office space to large and small medical practices that are providing leading edge healthcare services to Silicon Valley. Samaritan Medical Center has more than 300,000 square feet of office space and is beginning to plan for new expansion
