-- Outline --• Background + how I got here
• Contributor recognition - attribution for non-conventional research outputs
• How might ORCID fit into the online identity landscape?
This work can be freely copied, redistributed and adapted, as long as proper attribution is given

Lack of incentives for sharing
• Effort required to prepare, package and submit datasets to public repositories
• Time better spent writing papers & grants
• All sticks (funders, journals) - no carrots
• Need incentives - treat data as publications and credit creators
5
“[...] Many of the issues regarding data availability can be addressed if the principles of “publication” rather than “sharing” are applied. However, online data publication systems also need to develop mechanisms for data citation and indices of data access comparable to those for citation systems in print journals”

• Some points from ‘Beyond Impact’ discussions
– I’ve got lots of profiles / identifiers - why do I need yet another one?
• side note: majority of scholars are not this ‘online identity-aware’
– Centralization == BAD; dude, can’t this stuff be distributed?

What makes ORCID different?• ORCID is the only researcher identifier that is not limited to
discipline, institution or geographic area
• ORCID is backed by a non-profit organization with over 200 participants behind it
• ORCID is backed by many different stakeholders
• Publishers are an important ORCID stakeholder but are just one part
• ORCID is serious about building an open system

Scope (initial beta system)ORCID will build a central registry of unique identifiers for researchers and scholars with the following scope:
• ORCID will focus on currently active researchers
• Data will come from individuals and organizations
• ORCID will be a hybrid system of self- and organization-asserted identity
• Data collected will be those needed for disambiguation - extra data for optionally creating full CV-like profiles might be added in the future
• The system will provide basic matching and disambiguation of names
• The ORCID system will, from the start, enable 3rd parties to build value added services using ORCID infrastructure
• ORCID services will be developed based on the needs of the ORCID community
