SAMFORD LIONS
“SCUTTLEBUTT”
Edition 3
September
2018-2019
President – Kristen McKinnie
Editor – John Burnham
This is the third edition of the Samford Lions Scuttlebutt for Lions Year 2018-
2019. Any and all contributions for upcoming issues would be gratefully received
and most appreciated.
By its very nature this is a working document of the past, present and future
activities of the Samford Lions Club, with a bit of humour thrown in for good
measure.
It will only be as good as the membership make it!

Editor’s Edge
I am looking for eager volunteers, to tell their story for future editions of the
Scuttlebutt. Before I ask you to be a “willing” volunteer please be proactive and
come and tell me you would be happy to tell the other members your story; even
the juicy bits. I‟m sure there are some interesting stories out there

Kristen’s Creed
Hi All,
August has come and gone and September is on the wane as we charge onto the
end of the year.
The Samford community along with support from Keperra Bunnings and the
extended community have helped us to do what we do so well and do a sausage
sizzle and raise funds for the farmers and drought relief, enabling us to send
$3600.00 to the Roma Convention. We may be a small club but we have a
community with a big heart behind us.
Our memberships team is excelling and our club is welcoming 2 new members,
Darcy Creighton and John Weisselberg at our October Dinner Meeting. They
are both keen and assisted on the Samford community network fun run 🏃♀
BBQ / bacon & egg rolls on Sunday 9th September. I look forward to getting to
know them both. The team also have a few more people who are looking at
joining our club. Don‟t forget that if you have someone who is interested in
joining, you can get support from the membership team.
Bob Wright is recovering from his surgery and his capable lieutenant Frank
Assink is doing a great job. On that front, I discovered that David and I had an
interesting connection with Frank and Cathy when dropping off the Bunnings
BBQ takings. It turns out that Cathy‟s niece, Tina is none other than our son
Lachlan‟s partner (they‟ve only been together for 6 years and for 3 of those
years we‟ve been here). Who knew?
As always, we have many projects that our club members are involved in and
keep them rolling on in the background, Wayne and Burnie Brae, Stewart and
Kupadabin Park just to mention a few. If anyone has a project that they are
interested in, please raise it, as we are very keen to support any member with
projects. Alice has raised the Children of Courage project and she will be
starting that next year and would most likely appreciate some extra man or
woman power on this.
The venture of the new Joyner/Warner Lions Club is well under way with
John B, Alice & Bronwyn doing a great job. We may all be called on to don our
sneakers and do some letter box dropping in preparation of some information
sessions.
I have sent out some emails recently with dates for 2 social events on the
horizon, so get ready to party.
We have a few events on the horizon in October and November with the
Centennial celebrations as well as an event at the Arana Hills library in
November, all great events to showcase who we are.
I am looking forward to our upcoming Dinner Meeting with North Lakes Lions, so
hope to see you there.
Thanks to all for your contributions to making this a great club
President Kristen

Lions Children of Courage Award
The Samford Lions Club is planning to donate awards to worthy recipients of
this award next year.
The Lions Children of Courage Awards Programme is now established as an
important and extremely worthwhile project of Lions Clubs in our District.
What are the Lions Children of Courage Awards?
The Children of Courage awards recognise a very special group of children and
their families. There are many awards that recognise the achievements of young
people, however children with „special needs‟ were not catered for.
These awards are especially designed to recognise the courage and bravery
shown by these children every day.
The Children of Courage Awards are not a competition. Every recipient of an
award is a “winner” in his or her own right, as the recognition of these young
peoples‟ achievements will:
Act as an encouragement for their future
Help them to believe in themselves, and
Help to increase their self-worth.
All Children want to be accepted by others, regardless of any special needs they
may have. These awards will portray them as children who have successfully
overcome additional barriers which face them in this world.
Watch this space for further details.
Burnie Brae Pantry Project (As recently seen on TV)
We have had an ongoing commitment with Burnie Brae since September 2015 and have
taken it on as a club project. The Market Day is Project Pantry‟s initiative that offers
staple foods and personal care items to seniors on an aged pension and individuals
receiving a disability support pension.
On MARKET DAY, after paying a $5 entry fee (which goes back into buying more
provisions), clients walk through the market and collect one item from each table. Some
items are pre-packed for convenience; including tinned or package items (cereals, rice,
pasta, beans etc.) As well as personal care packs, other items include eggs,
sweet/savoury biscuits, fresh bread, fresh fruit and vegetables etc. Meat is also
provided at each Market Day for an additional $2. Each meat pack contains 2 sausages,
2 chicken wings, 1 chop and 150 g of mince.
In addition to receiving a hamper, recipients are invited to share a cup of tea or coffee
and connect with others in the community.
With the assistance of the Drake’s Samford a specially marked yellow topped bin is
being prominently displayed outside the store; to enable members of the Samford
community to place any items they may have purchased in the bin to assist these
pensioners in being able to buy staple foods at an affordable price. For any items that
are too big to fit through the slot, they can give them to one of the friendly staff in
Drakes.
We, as members of the Samford Lions Club, are able to support this project by
donating non-perishable items and toiletries each meeting in the basket provided. So
please give generously whenever you can.
PLEASE SUPPORT THIS WORTHWHILE CAUSE BY PROVIDING CANNED GOODS
AND TOILETERIES.

THE GEOFF RUSSELL STORY (from the District Newsletter)
Geoff is a retired dairy farmer in the Samford Valley region. Farming has been
in his family for generations, so he comes from good, honest, hardworking stock
that will do whatever they can to help a fellow man out.
He has been involved in the local community his whole life donating his time,
tractors and machinery to do anything from dragging a stuck animal from a
neighbour‟s dam to slashing the local pony club grounds and being an integral
part of the woodchops at the Samford Show where his family also sponsors one
of the top awards.
Since retiring from dairying back in 2001 Geoff has not enjoyed the best of
health, requiring numerous trips to hospital. However, you cannot stop this old
farmer‟s zest for life though.
Geoff still cuts and bales Rhodes grass on his property and tinkers about with
his vintage tractors attending the odd tractor trek and shows when his health
allows.
Very saddened by the constant news stories of farmers doing it so tough, Geoff
happily got involved with the Bunya Lions providing a farmer in need with a
recently cut patch of seventy Rhodes bales.
He then moved all his baling equipment to another property where he and a team
of old mates worked tirelessly to produce around 100 bales to be donated
through Lions to farmers in need. John Liddle, Lions Club of Brisbane Bunya

LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL - WEBSITE
www.members.lionsclubs.org is another great resource for members. There are
almost countless reference points to answer questions that arise at your

site and scan through the headings – you might be pleasantly surprised.
FUN FROM THE PAST!
Definition of Barbecuing
It‟s the only type of cooking a “real” man will do.
When a man volunteers to do such cooking, the following chain of events is put
into motion.
1. The woman goes shopping.
2. The woman fixes the salad, vegetables and dessert.
3. The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with the
necessary cooking utensils and takes it to the man chatting beside the grill,
drinking a beer.
4. The man places the meat on the grill.
5. The woman goes inside to check on the vegetables and sets the table.
6. The woman comes out and tells the man the meat is burning.
7. The man takes the meat off the grill and hands it to the woman.
8. The woman prepares the plates and brings them to the table.
9. After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes.
The man asked the woman if she enjoyed “her night off” and upon seeing her
annoyed reaction, conclude there‟s just no pleasing some women.
Bus Trip to Noela’s Gardens at Donnybrook
On 15th September about 50 intrepid explorers boarded a bus and headed to
deep and dark Noela‟s Gardens at Donnybrook to visit the lovely gardens and
have a sumptuous morning tea. The ride was filled with song and laughter and
interspersed with games and the odd raffle or two.
It was a great way to spend a Saturday and $800 was raised for the Lions
Medical Research Foundation.
We will be doing a letter box drop in the Warner area in the next few weeks, so put on you walking shoes and help us to get the new club up and running.
