• Microsoft Corporation is a public multinational corporation. Microsoft was founded in New Mexico in 1975, it moved to Bellevue in 1979 and settled in Redmond in 1986.

HISTORY• Established on April 4, 1975 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

• Founded by childhood friends, Paul Allen and Bill Gates.

• In 1972 Bill Gates and Paul Allen as young teenagers established their first company, Traf-O-Data. They sold a computer to the city of Seattle that could count city traffic.

• In 1973, Bill Gates became a student at Harvard University, where he meet Steve Ballmer. (now Microsoft's chief executive officer)

• Allen was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in 1983. His cancer was successfully treated by several months of radiation therapy and a bone marrow transplant. However, he did not return to Microsoft and began distancing himself from the company. Allen officially resigned from his position on the Microsoft board in November 2000 but was asked to consult as a senior strategy advisor to the company's executives. He sold 68 million shares of Microsoft stock that year, but still owns a reported 138 million shares.

• He is the founder and chairman of Vulcan Inc., which is his private asset management company, and is chairman of Charter Communications.

MICROSOFT & STOCK MARKET• Microsoft has 8.56 billion shares

• The company is run by a board of directors. Board members are elected every year at the annual shareholders' meeting using a majority vote system.

• Microsoft has split its stock nine times since it went public back in March 1986.

• One original Microsoft share would now be equal to 288 shares today.

• Interestingly the price of Microsoft’s stock at its initial public offering was $21 a share, at the time of writing a share is now around the $27 mark.

• One original MSFT share would now be worth over $7,000.

• Company began to offer a dividend on January 16, 2003 starting at eight cents per share.

• The current stock price for one share of Microsoft is $27.88 (Dec 31, 2010).

• Dividend is 23 percent ($0.16) per share.

• It is interesting to know that Bill Gates owns 600,974,696 share, which is about $16755174524.48 !!!!!!!

MICROSOFT ANTITRUST CASE 1/2• Microsoft operating systems account for approximately 90-95% of microcomputer

computer operating systems.

• Primarily in the 1990s, critics contend Microsoft used monopolistic business practices and anti-competitive strategies including refusal to deal and tying, put unreasonable restrictions in the use of its software, and used misrepresentative marketing tactics; both the U.S. Department of Justice and European Commission found the company in violation of antitrust laws.

• In 1997, the DOJ sued Microsoft alleging that it forced computer manufacturers to ship Microsoft Internet Explorer Web browser with its Windows 95 operating system. The key issue in the case is the issue of monopolization of operating systems market by Microsoft.

MICROSOFT ANTITRUST CASE 2/2• Those who believe that Microsoft is guilty of monopolization argue that Microsoft has

received up to $10 billion in monopoly profits.

• Microsoft supporters argue that Microsoft has kept prices low because of the threat of potential competition.

• On April 3, 2000, a judgment was handed down in the case of United states vs. Microsoft calling the company an "abusive monopoly “. it settled with the U.S. Department of Justice in 2004.
