True braSS choir

True Brass Choir was founded in 2012 by motivated young professional musicians who wished to see the Brass Ensemble sound gain prominence in the instrumental music genre and be an asset to the arts culture in their home city of Long Beach. These dedicated and thriving musicians seek to enrich their community with the splendor of the brass ensemble sound through unique, live performances and educational outreach programs.

Past highlights include attending the Rafael Mendez Brass Institute at the Lamont School of Music in Denver, Colorado, where True Brass received support from music legends such as Ronald Romm, David Hickman, and Daniel Perantoni, among others, and was invited to perform with the internationally known Summit Brass in the summer of 2013.

Summit Fanfare was written Summit Brass and David Hickman in 2004. Throughout the years I have written a number of pieces for the Summit Brass but never a fanfare, so when David asked for a piece to begin a concert I felt as though a fanfare was in order.

The Fanfare is based on a chord progression I used to open my Concerto for Tuba and Orchestra (1997). This progression is not the normal bright sort of fanfare but rather dark and even somewhat menacing in nature. The fanfare motive is soon replaced by a lighter and complicated motive, which is very rhythmic in nature, but this fanfare theme returns to end the piece.

- Anthony Plog

A Moorside Suite was written in 1928 as the contest piece in the National Brass Band Competition of that same year. Gustav Holst is arguably the most famous British composer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, having composed for almost every type of performance ensemble. He is most famous for his orchestral suite, The Planets (1913), and his pieces for the wind band medium, First Suite in E-flat for Military Band (1909), Second Suite in F for Military Band (1911), and Hammersmith: Prelude and Scherzo (1930). While his pieces for wind band differ greatly from The Planets, they find a kinship in A Moorside Suite. Gustav Holst, along with his friend Ralph Vaughn Williams, had become a pioneer of the folksong revival movement in Britain, and this had a great influence on his music. The modal melodies of the folksongs he collected infiltrated Holst’s own original melodies. While his Second Suite in F does not use his original melodies, the First Suite in E-flat and A Moorside Suite both use modal melodies that are original to Holst. The kinship of these three pieces is rooted deeply in the British folk song tradition. The announcement of Holst’s new work happened in a 1928 issue of The British Bandsman, “This year we introduce a new work by one of the most famous British composers - Gustav Holst. His music is thoroughly English in style. Now, in his first work for brass band, called ‘A Moorside Suite,’ he breaks fresh ground.” After having heard the performances, Holst wrote back to the editor of The British Bandsman saying:

Thank you for inviting me to write this year’s test piece. I hope you will ask me again some time, for I thoroughly enjoyed doing so, and was both impressed and delighted with the performances I heard last Saturday.…I listened to musicians conducted by musicians. There were different ideas of interpretation, but they were all musical ideas. I heard no interpretation that did not grow out of the music itself.

While we do have brass bands in the United States, the popularity is nowhere near the level of that in Britain. The brass band tradition is carried on in Britain, with it’s virtuosic playing and use of vibrato that is unique to the idiom. Also unique to the idiom are the brass instruments and the clefs that they read in. All instruments in a brass band, minus the bass trombone, read in treble clef (Yes, even the tubas must read in treble clef) and are keyed in either B-flat or E-flat. This arrangement tries to stay loyal to the original instrumentation, while adjusting the clefs and keys to fit the instrumentation of American brass ensembles. While we may not have the same amount of brass bands in the United States, almost every major university does indeed have a brass ensemble. It was my hope that in doing this arrangement for American brass ensembles, this work would find new attention in the United States and elsewhere.

The Earth-Warder is based off of a character from Warcraft lore named Thrall. Serving as one of the most prominent figures in game developer Blizzard Entertainment’s Warcraft franchise, Thrall has been given an in-depth backstory that continues to unfold with the release of new games. Thrall is an orc: a monstrous, green, humanoid race that serves as the sworn enemy of humans in the Warcraft universe. While most orcs crave bloodshed and conflict, Thrall’s upbringing has molded him into a wise, albeit stern at times, diplomat and leader. Thrall became a very powerful shaman and was bestowed the title of Earth-Warder, which tasked him with using the four elements to defend the world from destruction during dire times.

To me, Thrall is sort of a tragic hero, having most of his loved ones killed while growing up and being tasked with keeping peace between two rival factions (even when he led one of them). Brass and percussion seemed like a perfect medium to capture Thrall’s solemn heroism. The prominence of drums in the percussion section represent Thrall’s race, the orcs, use of war drums. The brass can (naturally) represent the war horns of the orcs, but also provide rich chorale textures. There are moments of quiet introspection juxtaposed with raw power, characteristics I see fit to represent Thrall, the Earth-Warder.

Fanfares, Marches, Hymns & Finale was written in 2002 by Emmy Award winning composer Bruce Broughton. Having been nominated 24 times, Mr. Broughton has won 10 Emmy awards and has been nominated for both an Oscar and a Grammy for his scores to Silverado and Young Sherlock Holmes. While being known mainly for his music in film an television, Mr. Broughton is well versed in music for the concert hall having his works performed by the Cleveland Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony, and wind ensembles all over the world. This particular piece is his only piece for large brass ensemble written for the lauded Bay Brass.

The work is in four movements and is essentially a symphony for brass ensemble. The title of the work contains the titles of all four movements, which all happen to be genres that fit into the brass vernacular. The first movement, Fanfares, is entirely based on a five-note motive that is stated in the first measure. Almost acting as a one-measure exhibition, this motive is sequenced across the entire movement maintaining a dark character throughout. The second movement, Marches, acts as the scherzo movement of this symphony. This movement has a sarcastic character as if to mock all of the many marches most brass players have surely performed. The third movement, Hymns, is in stark contrast to the other three movements. The composer calls the main melody a sort of “cowboy hymn” that is reminiscent of his score to Silverado. While not directly from a film, this movement sounds the most like Mr. Broughton’s film writing and has a contemporary American sound. The final movement, Finale, while not being like the large-scale finales we would associate brass players with, is rather a virtuosic and robust finish to this marvelous work for brass ensemble.
