East Samos
1. Vathy Take a stroll through the charming traditional settlement
of the islands capital. Here as you start to feel time
gently running backwards you can admire the narrow
uphill alleyways with their parapets and impressively
carved marble balconies and wooded roofed verandas.
Enjoy an ouzo at a traditional cafe-neon and imagine if
you can that villagers in a bygone age escaped pirate
invasion jumping over the closely positioned terracotta
roof tops.

2. Wine & Archaeological Museums
Enjoy a morning learning about the islands wine
making and archaeological heritage. These popular
museums in Samos Town boast a fascinating array of
exhibits. The archaeological museum has been heralded
as one of the most interesting provincial museums in
Greece. Samos Wine Museum offers a look at how the
islands main industry has grown over the last 60 years
and how its wines are exported to countries all over the
world. Relax and sample some of the most celebrated
varieties in the museums impressive tasting room.

3. Gangou beach A short stroll from your hotel room you will find a
pleasant beach to relax and enjoy a cool dip in the
inviting Aegean waters. Gangou Beach is the closest
beach to the main town of Vathy and is a great place
to unwind. It has plenty of sun loungers and some nice
bars to enjoy a couple of cocktails before sampling the
fantastic island cuisine in the evening.

4. Vlamari / Zoodochou Pigis Vlamari is an area of outstanding natural beauty. It is a
stunning valley surrounded by lush green hills which
in spring time offers an abundance of brightly coloured
flowers that fill the air with an attractive aroma. The
Monastery of Zoodochou Pigis is nestled between tall
pine and Cypress trees and its views over the bays of
Mourtia and Kerveli are simply breath taking. The 17th
Century Monastery is said to offer some of the best
views on the island.

5. Mourtia bay Visit the beautiful bay of Mourtia at the foot of
Zoodouchou Pigis Monastery. This bay is perfect for
solitary swimming and is a peaceful haven covered with
greenery. Take a few moments to admire the jade water
and imagine yourself in years to come relaxing with a
good book in this stunning setting that’s a little off the
beaten track.

6. Kerveli Bay Driving down through this lush green valley is a real
treat. Kerveli Bay is a neighbouring beach to the
Halcyon Hills site and offers clear green water and
natural shade on its peaceful beach. The bay is a
favourite with locals and visitors in the know and the
taverna on the water’s edge offers a fantastic array of
Greek cuisine where you can watch the sun set over
Turkey.

South Samos
7. Posidonio This charming village is within walking distance to the
Halcyon Hills site and is the perfect place to sit and
relax with a Greek coffee in its attractive Taverna with
its tables laid out over the water’s edge. Admire the
backdrop of the idyllic St Nikolas church high on the hill
with the Turkish mountains behind. On Friday evenings
come and enjoy Greek dancing with local celebrity
Captain Yannas, you won’t be disappointed.

8. Klima/Halcyon Hills land The highlight of every person’s Viewing Trip! This is
your chance to explore the Halcyon Hills Land and the
neighbouring village of Klima. Klima offers calm waters
and an abundance of sunshine all year round. Whilst on
the land you can appreciate the beautiful surroundings
and that exquisite view out across Asia Minor and the
neighbouring area of Turkey. Walking around the land
delivers the experience that will encompass the resort
and its true feeling of luxury, peace and tranquillity.

9. Psilli Amos One of the most popular beaches on the Island, its
name translates as “fine sand”. This beautiful beach is
popular with families as it offers clear, warm shallow
waters and an array of fish restaurants lining the beach.

Sample the “Samian Nectar”
10. Tunnel of Efpalinos One of the most significant works carried out during
the Polycrates era of around 500 BC., this ancient
tunnel served as a waterway to the capital. By arduous
digging from either side of the mountain using only
primitive tools, the teams met in the middle with only a
small difference of a few feet. It is considered today as a
miracle of engineering.

11. Monastery of Spiliani The View from this Monastery is impressive with
panoramas spanning the Aegean all the way to the
Turkish shores. A fascinating cave at the rear of the
Monastery houses a little chapel and it is said the
Islanders hid here to escape the final Turkish invasion. It
also offers a welcome rest from the heat of the mid-day
sun and you can listen to the gentle dripping of water
running into the self filling baptism pools.

12. Pythargorio Unquestionably one of the most picturesque spots on
the south coast, Pythargorio takes its name from the
famous mathematician who was born here. It offers a
relaxed and cosmopolitan atmosphere in the summer
months when the old harbour is lined with fantastic
restaurants and cosy cocktail bars, it is a joy to spend
time here either by day or night. Relax and enjoy a
fantastic meal whilst watching the sleek yachts and
traditional fishing boats journey in and out.

13. Potokaki/Doryssa Bay Hotel The area of Potokaki is a long stretch of beach which
is also the location of Samos’ only 5 star hotel resort.
The Hotel has recreated a traditional Greek Village in its
grounds and the houses here are actually hotel rooms.
On any viewing trip its always good to check out the
comparables which already exist on the island to help in
your research of the project.

14. Temple of Hera Just outside of the fishing port of Ireon stands the
Temple of Hera first built in the 8th century BC. It was
built in tribute to Hera, Queen of the Gods, who it is
said was born on the island. The Temple was destroyed
and rebuilt throughout history and the final 4th
structure was commissioned in the Polycrates era. With
133 columns and standing 25 metres high Herodotus
said it was the most luxurious and biggest temple he
ever saw. Sadly after once again being destroyed by the
Persians, only one column remains. It is worth taking a
step back in time to visit this historically special place.

15. Pagondas / Samiopoula Island This pretty village is the islands chief producer of olive
oil; it also produces oranges, wine and grapes. It has a
charming square with a traditional taverna whose tables
are shaded under a magnificent oak tree. The journey
to this village is truly breathtaking, passing along the
Samos coast line you can stop and take in views of the
magnificent Samiopoula Island.

West Samos
16. Ormos This traditional little fishing harbour is a perfect stop
off for a stroll along its cobbled streets and to enjoy
a superb fresh fish lunch. Many people arrive here
to enjoy the picturesque region and the crystal clear
Aegean waters.

17. Marathokambos This traditional town feels like it has been literally carved
into the mountain side and whilst exploring seems to be
a never ending maze of steps and pretty Greek houses.
It has fantastic views over the region of Ormos and
Votsalakia beach.

18. Cave of Pythagoras Hidden within the green slopes of Mount Kerkis is a
cave situated half way up the mountain. It is believed
Pythagoras and his pupils sought refuge here from
Polycrates after Pythagoras returned from his travels in
Egypt and Persia. Ascending the many steps towards
the cave and its church you get amazing views
throughout the mountains.

19. Psili Amos Bay (west) Like Psilli Amos in the south this beautiful beach is a
favourite with family’s due to its perfect white sand and
shallow water. However this beach is less developed
and you can enjoy its natural lush green surroundings
and those all too sublime waters.

20. Limnionas bay Situated just around the corner from Psili Amos, this
beach also has an abundance of soft white sand.
Limnionas is the perfect place to spend the day relaxing
on a sun lounger and enjoying a short walk to one of
its many restaurants. The beautiful Mount Kerkis gives
a stunning backdrop to yet another perfect bay on the
west of the island.

21. Drakei This untouched village at the top of Mount Kerkis is
the highest village on the island. The environment is
wonderful with lush vegetation, steep rocks, excellent
views of open sea and a sunset to die for. The village
is built amongst dense pine forest and throughout the
summer months the air is filled with the aroma of fresh
pine. Enjoy a glass of traditional Samian wine in the
roof-top Cafe Neon in the centre of the village

Kokkari is a favourite spot to spend a relaxing afternoon
North Samos
22. Kokkari The Resort of kokkari is one of the most popular on the
island and although many tourists visit the area every
year it has managed to retain its original charm. Densely
wooded slopes, blue skies, clear waters and 3 wonderful
beaches provide the backdrop to this picturesque
village. There is a plethora of coffee houses and fish
restaurants that are well placed next to the water’s edge
and it is a delight to visit Kokkari for a simple coffee
and relax in the sunshine or a wonderful dinner in the
evening time.

23. Lemonakia/Tsambou Beaches These beaches are two of the most popular on the
north coast and have a very different feel to those on
the south or west of the island. Lemonakia is situated
in one of the most dazzling coves on Samos whilst
Tsambou’s picturesque charm has won the hearts of its
visitors here. Both beaches have crystal blue water and
places to sit back and soak up the sun’s rays.

24. Vourliotes As you travel the winding mountain road it is easy to
see why this village has been given the name “balcony
of the Aegean”. The open panoramic views are sublime
and a mixture of lush green vineyards and blue Aegean
water stretches out before you. The village itself has the
traditional architecture and as you enter the square you
get a glimpse of village life from yesteryear. It’s a perfect
place to sit and unwind with a fresh orange juice and
listen to the gentle sounds of men playing backgammon
and drinking coffee.

25. Manolates Visiting the gorgeous mountain village of Manolates
is a unique experience. The journey to the top is
reminiscent of West Country England with its leafy drive
and babbling stream running alongside the road. Many
artists now live in the village and it is a great opportunity
to buy a gift that’s totally unique to take home with
you. No visit is complete without a home cooked Greek
lunch in the square and sampling the fresh spring water
that flows inside one charming taverna.

26. Potami Bay With its smooth pebbles and crystal clear blue waters,
Potami beach is considered to be the most attractive on
Samos. The forest behind the beach is also a great place
to stroll alongside a beautiful river and hike into the
mountain to enjoy a secret taverna with fantastic views.
Its unique natural beauty is complimented by thousands
of butterflies that inhabit the area. Also take in the view
from the little church of St Nikolas, giving superb views
of the whole bay.

Central Samos
27. Koumaradei/Pirgos Both these small villages are worth visiting to stock
up on traditional Samos gifts. Koumaradei has been
producing pottery and ceramics for century’s and many
of the original families still produce in the area. It has a
number of shops to purchase some little keepsakes to
take home. Pirgos is the top honey producing village
on the island and you will find many little shops on the
roadside selling the local honey with its unique pine
infused flavour.

28. Platanos One of the most beautiful villages on the island it was
built on the saddle between Mount Kerkis and Mount
Ambelos at a height of 520 metres. The views are
tremendous, the vegetation thick and the water fresh.
Platanos is also a big wine producing area so take
advantage of a cool glass of wine in one of the many
restaurants that are situated in the square.

29. Mytilini Here you will find a charming Greek village with
the usual picturesque square but also it is home to
the paleontological museum. It has many exhibits of
unusual dinosaurs found on the island, one being the
Samotherion, named as it was unique to Samos. Mytilini
also through the summer month’s plays international
films in a tranquil garden setting, for people who like to
do something that little bit different.

30. Profiti Ilias Church, Mount Ambelos Not for the faint hearted! This journey goes off road
into the centre of Mount Ambelos. When you reach the
summit you will find a small church called St Illias as well
as the best views on the whole island. From this point
you have panoramic 360 degree views from east to
west and north to south.

viewing trip itinerary that will help you make the most of
your time on the beautiful island of Samos.
Day 1
9.30am: You will leave with our dedicated Barrasford
and Bird representative from Vathy and travel south
east. The morning is spent visiting some of the
neighbouring bays of Kerveli and Posidonio. These are
in close proximity to the Halcyon Hills site and help you
get a feel for the geography of the area. You will enjoy
a peaceful coffee at the water’s edge in Posidonio and
relax in the warm morning sunshine alongside the local
fishermen repairing their fishing nets.
Slowly you will make your way to Klima Beach, home
of the Halcyon Hills site. Take a few moments to admire
the traditional tavernas that languish at the water’s
edge and perhaps take the opportunity to paddle in the
crystal clear blue water.
Spend the rest of the morning exploring the Halcyon
Hills site, taking pictures and finding the location of your
property. It is important that you take as much time
as you need to really enjoy the fantastic setting of this
spectacular site.
Before you break for a sumptuous lunch by the water
side in the charming port town of Pythorgorio you will
get the opportunity to sample some Samos history at
the magnificent Spiliani Monastery with its stunning
views and fascinating cave.
Recommended viewing trip itinerary
The plot of Halcyon Hills is truly spectacular with its two beaches and panoramic views across the azure sea to turkey
After lunch take some time to walk around Pythogorio’s
picturesque streets and maybe pick up some small
souvenirs. You will then visit the Doryssa Bay Hotel to
help you get a sense of what comparable hotels already
exist on the island.
As you head back to Vathy you will stop to take in the
ancient site of the Temple of Hera and enjoy a scenic
drive through Mytilini finally admiring the breathtaking
views across Samos Town.
5.00pm- You arrive back to your hotel to relax and have
some free time to explore the town for yourself before
you go to diner in an atmospheric restaurant picked by
our representative.
Day 2
9.30 am- Leave your hotel with the Barrasford and Bird
representative and travel north. If you are interested you
can stop for a tour of the Samos Wine Museum before
driving north on the stunning coastal road.
Stop for coffee in the popular but unspoilt Kokkari and
admire the traditional Greek atmosphere and warm
Aegean Sea.
You will continue as far North as possible until you
reach the picturesque Potami Beach and its wooded
nature walk.
For lunch visit the artistic and sublime village of
Manolates with its traditional Greek cuisine and drink
from its natural spring. Then enjoy the gentle drive up
into the vineyards of Vourliotes with its far reaching
views out over the Aegean. You can enjoy a nice glass
of ouzo here in the little square full of character.
Take a slow drive back to Vathy perhaps stopping to see
some of the many beaches the beautiful north coast has
to offer.
5.00pm- Arrive back to your Hotel and perhaps enjoy a
swim at the nearby Gangou beach before meeting for
dinner.
