Welcome to our Autumn season programme!

It’s been an exceptional summer, featuring many inspirational sporting moments and cultural highlights. sampad is thrilled to be joining the celebrations by presenting MANDALA; the key finale event for the London 2012 festival and the Cultural Olympiad programme in the Midlands. MANDALA takes place in Birmingham and Nottingham for one night only, so please don’t miss the chance to join us for this flagship event for South Asian arts! You can find out more on page 4.

In addition, sampad has a wealth of fantastic events coming up to keep you entertained this autumn.

We’re delighted to be supporting new dance from leading British Asian dance artists Shane Shambhu and Sonia Sabri (pages 8 & 9).

Our exciting new partnership with the Bramall Music Building at University of Birmingham kicks off in style with the mesmerising sounds of Play Out (page 11).

In October, we’re joining Birmingham Book Festival, to mark the publication of Inspired by Tagore following our hugely successful international writing competition that connected sampad and our partners British Council India with around 1,500 writers from 37 countries. Words into Movement features beautiful dance inspired by some of the submissions, along with readings by selected authors of winning entries.

We’ll also be hosting a special tribute to the late Rajesh Khanna with a moving celebration of his work, reflecting his association with musical giants Kishore Kumar and R D Burman.

8 September (12pm-1pm) Harmeet Singh Virdee ArtsFest Special. The charismatic, young British sitar maestro accompanied by tabla virtuoso Gurdain Rayatt. Enjoy improvisational magic infused with quintessentially Indian raga & rhythm.

29 September Afternoon Raga Unveiled Sarod master Prattyush Banerjee accompanied by the exhilarating sounds of tabla maestro Surdarshan Singh.

20 October Rekesh Chauhan Vibrant Indian classical music from the acclaimed young pianist.

24 November Rajesh David Indian classical and traditional folk vocals including devotional bhajans, classical ghazals and Welsh– inspired poetry. Accompanied by Pete Stacey on saxophone.

15 December Milan to Mumbai Giuliano Modarelli (guitar) and Bhupinder Singh Chaggar (tabla) skilfully manipulate the notes of a traditional rãg creating a beautifully eclectic sound.

MandalaMANDALA is a dazzling free outdoor performance fusing international and British Asian music and dance with spectacular 3D digital projections.

Town Hall, Birmingham and Nottingham Council House will be magically illuminated with colour and light to tell a story that connects the past and the present. The buildings will be brought to life with stunning digital projections and visual effects triggered by the live dance, music and audience interaction.

Mandala (Sanskrit for ‘circle’) will unite exciting British Asian dancers Aakash Odedra and Devika Rao, BBoy’s Attic choreographed by Marso, and a company of artists – merging the beautiful forms of classical Asian dance with edgy, urban attitude.

With a powerful soundtrack, featuring the music of world-class artists Anoushka Shankar and Zakir Hussain, and a special live appearance by multi award-winning tabla artist, Talvin Singh, Mandala will be the free outdoor multimedia spectacle not to miss!

Mandala is a bold, new collaboration between sampad South Asian arts and leading arts & technology company, seeper.

Live Music and Dance

The performances will provide a dramatic celebration for the final weekend of the London 2012 Festival, the spectacular 12-week nationwide celebration running from 21 June until 9 September 2012 bringing together leading artists from across the world with the very best from the UK. Mandala also marks the beginning of ArtsFest in Birmingham and the opening weekend for the World Event for Young Artists and final weekend of MelaFest 2012 in Nottingham. Top: Devika Rao

Special performance by Red Baraat at Mandala in BirminghamThe seriously hot, larger-than-life, Brooklyn based dhol ‘n’ brass band Red Baraat will be flying in from New York City to start Mandala in Birmingham with a swing! The nine piece band led by dhol drummer Sunny Jain consists of dhol, drums, percussion, a sousaphone and a five piece horn section. The band fuse the infectious North Indian rhythms of bhangra with funk, jazz, Latin and go-go and their sound is big, brassy and full of energy.

Dig out your dancing shoes and hotfoot it down to Chamberlain Square!

Celebrating the legends:

Roop Kumar & Sunali RathodRoop Kumar Rathod, the voice behind popular hits Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Sandese Aate Hain, Toh Chalun and Maula Mere Maula, and his wife Sunali Rathod pay tribute to the legendary Mohammed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Talat Mahmood and Noor Jehan. They will be performing classics such as Jo Waada Kiya (Taj Mahal), Itna Na Mujhse Tu Pyaar Badha (Chaaya), Aawaaz De Kahan Hai (Anmol Ghadi), Suhani Raat (Dulari) and Madhuban Mein Radhika (Kohinoor).

Jyotsna SrikanthCollective – InterlacedJyotsna Srikanth is a British-Indian violinist and composer who has explored the crossover between Indian music and other genres, including jazz, Irish folk, electronica, flamenco, blues, pop, Western classical and Bollywood music.

Her playing is known for its effective blend of ‘bhava’ (musical expression and emotion) and fingering technique and she has played for nearly 200 Indian films, under musical directors such as Ilayaraja.

‘Interlaced’ combines Indian classical music with a contemporary audio-layering, including jazz and folk elements.

Words into movement: Inspired by Tagore at Birmingham Book FestivalSouth Asian classical and contemporary dance performances with readings of selected poems/stories.

Dancers will take their inspiration from a selection of stories and poetry in the book Inspired by Tagore, published by sampad in partnership with British Council India, further to a hugely successful international writing competition that attracted entries from around 1,500 writers from 37 countries.

Shane Shambhu Company – Leaving only a Trace

Leaving Only A Trace unique, contemporary Bharatanatyam language accompanied by live music to tell a revealing story shared by many of dual-heritage in the UK.

A young British Asian man decides to leave home to ‘find himself’. While packing his belongings he starts to unravel the past and begins to wonder whether cultural values have restricted him. He realises that he must let go of his past, in order to come to terms with his future.

A tribute to Rajesh Khanna and Kishore Kumar“ Kishore Kumar was my soul and I was his body”

Rajesh Khanna

Rajesh Khanna’s career as matinee idol lasted over two decades. Widely considered as the original superstar of Indian cinema, he had 15 consecutive solo hit films in the 1970s; a record that remains as yet unbroken.

Music contributed enormously to his stardom, due to his successful association with singer Kishore Kumar and composer RD Burman. The trio churned out evergreen hits like Kuch to log kahenge and Ye shaam mastani and established the golden era of Hindi film music.

KaavishThe celebrations continue with Kaavish (‘to achieve one’s desires through action’) tracing Sonia’s artistic journey, with live performances, archive recordings and a voiceover by Sonia giving her personal insight into the work

The second half looks forward to the next stages of Sonia’s creative journey, with a new specially commissioned work by Sampad and Milapfest, featuring Bharatanatyam dancer Ash Mukerjee, and an ensemble of musicians, including tabla maestro, Sarvar Sabri and live Indian rock music.

Play OutPlay Out explores the improvisational nature of Indian and Jazz music through fascinating creative partnerships that cross musical and geographical borders.

At its heart lies Jesse Bannister’s distinctive saxophone sound, honed from years of absorbing influences from Indian classical music, jazz and contemporary composition.

He is joined by Zoe Rahman, a brilliant pianist and rising star on the contemporary jazz scene, powerfully original drummer, Seb Rochford and dynamic bass-player Kenny Higgins.
