Student Work Place Information and Instructions
Introduction for the Assessor
The Strategy documents for this qualification outlines the timetable, work placement times for mixed mode students and the number of times that the
student should be visited in the workplace. You must ensure that the student is aware of what is required of them in the workplace and that they have read the
information below and are prepared for completion of the log book. You must also ensure that the workplace supervisor is ready and aware of their
responsibilities. You must provide the work place supervisor with the information booklet and answer questions as they arise. The student must take
the responsibility to complete this log book, the workplace supervisor will authenticate that the student is filling it out truthfully and completely. You will
also be responsible to observe the student during your visits and indicate in the logbook when observations have taken place. The student must also complete a journal entry for each unit and you are required to talk through the entry with
the students during your visits to verify the authenticity of the entries. The student must gather supporting evidence to demonstrate what they have been
doing with regards to the tasks outline din this logbook. They must prepare a portfolio of this evidence to support their claims. You will assess the evidence as
part of the final assessment for each unit. You should check the portfolio development during your visit and record whether or not there is appropriate
progress being made.
You, as assessor are expected to conduct an induction of the student prior to commencement of the work placement to ensure that the student will be safe
and to ensure that the centre is appropriately equipped to support the learning and assessment of the student. << Insert RTO Name here>> will provide a
checklist for this purpose.

About the Work Placement
A compulsory part of your course
Work Placement is an important part of this qualification CHC30113 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care.
At << Insert RTO Name Here>> students will be required to complete << Insert Number here>> hours of work
placement over the << Insert Number here>> month program. The program has been designed so that
students can complete the required number of hours in the workplace by the end of the course. Because of
this mandatory requirement it is essential that students record hours ‘on the job’.
Work placement is generally unpaid, however if students are already working in the industry and the
workplace supervisor is happy to supervise the student as a work placement student at the same time then
they should make arrangements with the workplace supervisor and let the RTO know about the situation.
Completion of specific assessment tasks that you will observe as the assessor during a workplace visit, should
be conducted outside of paid work time. However, students may complete tasks during their everyday work in
the service that are relevant to the course and that will allow the student to collect evidence for their
portfolio. Students can ask the work place supervisor to verify that they have completed such tasks e.g. written
a short story and developed props such as finger puppets – these could be included in the portfolio and the
workplace supervisor could verify that they have made them and how they used them on the job. Students will
attend and participate under normal hours at the centre but are not counted as an employee under most
conditions. Attendance should not exceed working hours as specified by an Act or Industrial Award. Students
should only be placed in work environments where adequate supervision is provided by the work place to
ensure effective learning and the protection of students. Students are not to be counted in ratio whilst on an unpaid work placement.
You will visit the student twice during the work placement, i.e. during each of the block work placements.
Good attendance by the student is essential.
The workplace has agreed to offer the student the opportunity to learn and practice under their supervision at
the service. This is generous and much appreciated. So, when the dates are agreed, good attendance is very
important. Student attendance must be recorded in this logbook and made available to you as the trainer/assessor. If students cannot attend work placement at any time they should let the Service know.

A medical certificate is required for non-attendance.
Assessor Instructions:
Liaise with << Insert RTO Name here>> Head Trainer/Administration about how to
report attendance for each student.
Students should fill in their details over the next few pages and use the attendance sheet to record attendance
at the workplace. If they cannot attend the work placement at any time they should let the Service know.

Getting the most out of work placement
What will students do?
Work placement involves practice and assessment of skills while students are working within a
Service. This logbook has been designed to help students get the most out of their on the job
experiences, when they are on work placement. The work place gives students opportunities to put
the skills and knowledge developed through their reading and learning activities into practice. Each
day students are at the Service (either their workplace or when they are on work placement); they
should document their experiences using this Log book and a Daily Journal. They are required to be
assessed under various conditions and situation and space is allocated in the logbook for this. They
must also be assessed whilst working with a range of age groups. So students must record what they
do on more than one occasion and document what they do with evidence as part of their portfolio.
Assessment for CHC50113 Diploma of Early
Childhood Education and Care
To achieve the qualification CHC50113 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care students must be deemed competent in 28 required units of competency. Students will be required to complete a range of assessment tasks including formative assessment activities and summative projects and questions.
Please note, students are required to satisfactorily complete this logbook (see details of how to do
this in a later section), supported by a portfolio of evidence and submit the 3rd party report, before
they will be signed off for the 27 units listed below (the First Aid Unit- HLTAID004 will be assessed separately).
The following pages will help students get started and help them understand what is required.

List of Units Assessed in the On-the-Job Log Book
The practical components of the units listed below will be assessed whilst students are on work
placement. Much of the knowledge component for these units is assessed through completion of
activities students receive in the learning and assessment materials. However, students will be
expected to demonstrate practical tasks whilst on the job. They will do this either under the
supervision of the workplace supervisor and with you, as their assessor.
Note: For the units marked with an * below, students must demonstrate 120 hours work placement. For the units marked with a + below, students must demonstrate 240 hours work placement. If the student’s Service cannot support completion of work placement for all of these units they will have to seek work placement for that unit elsewhere. Students must discuss this with their workplace supervisor to make arrangements.
