clothing caught in sudden rain shower
early prototype. bunching fabric. bad design. final prototype demonstrated during critique
good initial airßow.
one push, one pull fan.better air movement.
centrifugal force pulls moisture against absorbant pad.
rollers squeeze moisture. abrasive on fabric.
sheets are suspended in cage.
exploring ideas to keep sheets ßat.
Ideation / Sketching Examples
one hard, one soft roller.works by absorbtion rather than wringing.
wrap sheet around cage, instead of balling up inside.
hold fabric against mesh. form into spiral.
air is now pushed across ßat fabric.
one bedsheet is woven through S-shaped frame
x frame, stretches4 sheets on each arm.
fabric is stretched over and down both sides. this keeps arm size reasonable.

nurse testing previous design.
final prototypediscussing design ideas with T4T lead engineer, Dr. Musaazi
Client: T4T Ltd. Users: Caregivers in East AfricaTesters: Nurses in Mulago Hospital, Kampala
Goal: Take existing T4T pill crusher functionality (crack, crush, roll), redesign to be more ergonomic, less threatening to children, and more marketable to hospital administration.Successes: Testers found asymetric design immediately intuitive, comfortable to use, and were particularly positive about long term use. Design is child-friendly. Percieved value was much higher.Failures: 50% higher production costs (too high).

Client: Technology 4 Tomorrow Ltd.Users: Rural construction workers in East AfricaTesters: myself, T4T employees
Goal: Address failures from previous mixer design. To redesign rural mixer with emphasis on local manufacturing, mobility and ergonomics. Successes: Product mixes 1/3 bag of cement and 2.67 wheel barrows of soil in 5 minutes. Low production cost ($150), easy to use, move, maintain.Failures: Requires experienced user to measure cement and dirt.

fork turns on circuit mechanically. opens lock electrically
circuit hidden underneath box’s false bottombox sprung open
Client: School ProjectUsers: myself, anyoneTesters: myself, engineering friend.
Goal: Professor: ÒCreate a box and key. Be clever.Ó personal goal: Create a box that opens to a certain musical keynote. Use a tuning fork to provide consistent frequency input.Successes: Product is functional (circuit design by Jim Morgan), box/lock design by myself. locking mechanism is intuitive if you have the key.Failures: If you hum through the scale slowly, you can open the box, not very secure.
