Dear Adams School Community,

This school year has been flying along at an amazing pace. I feel for-tunate to have become a part of the Adams School Community and spend time with such great kids, teachers, and families. Each day I appreciate the relationships I continue to build with you and your children. We all know each child holds so much talent and promise, and I am continually impressed by all their hard work and abilities.

We have several upcoming opportunities for you and your family to participate in at Adams School. In April, we have two Family Math Nights. The first Family Math Night will be for third through fifth graders on Thursday, April 12th from 6-7. The second Family Math Night will be for kindergarten through second graders on Thursday, April 19th from 6-7. Our last Culver’s Scoopie Night will be on May 8th, and we’re hoping it will be a perfect night for custard. The PTA is organizing a Family Block Party on May 17th. This will be a great op-portunity for families to have fun and hopefully enjoy a beautiful spring evening outside. On June 1st, we will have our Family Picnic. Again, we’ll be hoping for good weather, so we can enjoy our picnic outside.

I look forward to seeing you at many of our spring events. We appre-ciate all the effort you make to support your children and their learn-ing. If you have any questions, appreciations, or concerns, please feel free to contact us at: 743-6305.

Sincerely,

Sally Parks

Birthday Invitations

We strongly encourage families to deliver birthday party invitations away

from school. This prevents hurt feelings among the students and minimizes

distractions to learning. In the event you are unable to deliver invitations

outside of school, please contact your child’s teacher and make arrange-

ments to deliver the invitations outside of instructional time. Please do not

have students deliver invitations themselves on school grounds.

Thanks for your cooperation!

FRC News BY MRS. TOPEL AND MS. VANTRESS, FRC COORDINATORS

The Family Resource Center will be hosting two Math Nights.

Grades 3-5 will be: Thursday, April 12 from 6:00-7:00 p.m.

Grades K-2 will be: Thursday, April 19 from 6:00-7:00 p.m.

More information will be sent home in April.

We are looking for volunteers to help with Math Night and the Adams School

Picnic that will be on June 1. Each picnic volunteer will receive a free meal.

If you are able to help, please contact Jamie Topel at 743-6307 and she will

give you more information. Picnic notes will be sent home mid May.

We could also use some gently used books, games, and puzzles for our FRC.

If you are spring cleaning and would like to find a good home for any of these

items, we would really appreciate it and our students would enjoy having a

selection of things to check-out! Thanks for your consideration.

Family Access Updates

All families should be sure to update information in Family Access as it changes. Primary guardians are re-

sponsible to change information in Family Access; the district does not make these changes or put the informa-

tion from enrollment cards in this program. Address changes are the only changes that must be made through

the school office.

Remember to go to the School District of Janesville’s website, then click on the tab for parents and se-

lect Family Access.

Have you added all emergency contacts? Check the tab on the right to make sure you have.

Make sure you have updated telephone numbers. AlertNow uses the telephone numbers provided from

here.

Please include your email address to receive emails.

If you do not have your login/password you may go to the login page and click on “Forgot your login/

password” and a new password will be emailed to you. If you did not provide an email address, you

will need to stop by or call the school office and the school secretary will need to re-set the password

for you. Please allow a day for your password to be re-set and the information given to you.

MUSIC NEWS BY MRS. VRIEZEN AND MRS. MEDING

Exciting things continue in the Music Room with the study of our musical elements of Rhythm,

Melody, Harmony/Texture, Form, and Timbre.

Everyone had fun celebrating “MIOSM” – Music In Our Schools Month during March. This

year’s theme from the National Association for Music Education was “Music Lasts a Lifetime!”

Some of the third, fourth, and fifth grade students chose to create their own original musical in-

strument as a home-project! Great job everyone!

Mrs. Vriezen will be offering an optional keyboard club before school on Tuesdays and Wednes-

days during the fourth quarter for students in third and fourth grade. Space will be very limited

and offered for two sessions. Permission slips will go out to everyone on the same day, Wednes-

day, April 11, and must be returned ASAP in order to get one of the available spots.

Session 1: Tuesday & Wednesday before school: April 17, 18, 24, and 25.

Session 2: Tuesday & Wednesday before school: May 1, 2, 8, and 9.

ART NEWS BY MS. ZDRALE AND MRS. WARD

Happy Spring! It’s hard to believe we’re in the fourth quarter already! There are a lot of exciting things happening in the Art Department. Here are some of the highlights.

First graders will be doing an art project in the computer lab. What a fun way to show that pictures tell stories! They’ll be illustrating and narrating their own story. If all goes well, the stories can then be emailed to family and friends.

Second and Fifth grades will be creating their annual clay projects.

Third graders will be anxious to bring home their coil pots and their weavings when they are com-pleted.

Fourth graders will be touring the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art as a part of their Madison field trip on April 13. One of the current exhibits is about Wisconsinite Harry Houdini and the art he inspired. What a great way to integrate Art and Social Studies!

Special thanks to Miss Holmes, our student teacher for the third quarter. Best of luck!

PHYSICAL EDUCATION BY MRS. TYRIVER AND MR. PAGE

Thank you again to all of the students who participated in the 16th annual Jump Rope for Heart. Adams

School raised over $2,800.00 for the American Heart Association!! This total is $300 over last year -

congratulations!

With the nice spring weather we’ve been having, we hope you’ve been getting outside and having fun

being active! Research is continuing to show that students who are physically active perform better in

the classroom. There is a strong connection between moving and learning!

With the warmer weather we see more students with sandals and flip flops coming to Physical Education.

It is very helpful to have a pair of tennis shoes in lockers so that students are always prepared for class.

Units for April and May include inline skating; striking with paddles, rackets, bats, and golf clubs; fitness;

and track and field.

Speaking of track and field, the dates of the Elementary Track Meet are as follows:

May 22 – 5th Grade

May 23 – 4th Grade

May 24 – Rain Date for either grade

The meets are held at Monterey Stadium and start at 8:20 a.m. Students will be back at Adams in time

for lunch. More information will be coming home with 4th and 5th grade students soon.

Order forms for Adams Eagles t-shirts have gone home with students. This is a great way for us to be a

team at the track meet, plus it helps parents and teachers spot students doing their events on the field.

MOVING???

If you will be moving from your current home address please contact Adams School

office at 743-6300 as soon as possible to determine what paperwork you will need to

fill out for your child to continue attending his/her current school. Please note: if you

are moving to an address outside the School District of Janesville in most cases your

child is eligible to continue attending the School District of Janesville as long as you

complete the appropriate paperwork within the required timeline.

If you have any questions about school placement for a particular address please con-

tact Administrative Services Secretary Tami Carlson at 743-5006. The Administrative

Services Office is open year round.

If you are the parent of an elementary student and will be moving over the summer

months when the elementary schools are closed, please contact Administrative Ser-

vices Secretary Tami Carlson at 743-5006 or the New Student Enrollment Office at

743-5152 to complete the appropriate paperwork.

Hospital and see the different jobs there are in a hospital. We also had the opportunity

to go to the fire department and learn about the different jobs firefighters do. The chil-

dren are very excited to start playing in our classroom hospital and fire station. In May,

we will have an all day field trip to Green Meadows Farm as part of our farm unit. More

information will be coming home shortly about our field trip and chaperone opportuni-

ties.

KINDERGARTEN NEWS

Happy Spring! Happy Easter!

During the months of April and May the focus in reading will be spent introducing the

last five letters of the alphabet. They are: Xx, Qq, Nn, Gg, and Rr. The students will

continue to work hard on learning all thirty vocabulary words and rhyming word fami-

lies.

In Math, the students will continue to work on 2-D and 3-D shapes, addition/

subtraction story problems, and fractions (half and whole).

Social Studies/Science/Health will center around the last three units of the kindergar-

ten curriculum They are: bugs, the ocean, and the farm. The students will explore

these topics through songs, finger-plays, art projects, family projects, books, and class-

room discussion.

The kindergarten students will take one last field trip. It will be to Hinchley’s Farm/

Palmer Park on May 18. Please feel free to join us on this fun exciting trip.

Have a wonderful and safe summer vacation! See you next fall!

Please dress your

child for

Wisconsin spring

weather.

Students go

outside twice a day

unless the

Please send all money in an envelope

clearly marked with your child’s name and

state what the money is for

(milk, hot lunch, field

trip) to avoid confusion.

The office does not have

money on hand to make

change. Please send the proper amount.

Please also write separate

checks for milk, field trips and

lunch since the money goes into different

accounts and we can’t

always make change.

FIRST GRADE NEWS

Our Everyday Math series continues to work on basic math facts. Please continue to work

on addition and subtraction, telling time to the hour and half hour, and counting coins. We

will be measuring using centimeters, inches, exploring 3-D shapes, and fractions. Students

are continuing their science unit on weather. We are learning about different kinds of

weather, the water cycle, and weather tools. We will be studying animals for our last science

unit, and observing fish and ants. Students will learn about animals’ needs and the adapta-

tions that help them survive. To reinforce our animal unit, we will have a field trip to the zoo

in Madison toward the end of May. In Social Studies, we welcome our Jr. Achievement vol-

unteers. They teach us about careers, needs, wants, and communities.

April is our last month for our Reading in Action program. Please continue to read at home

to maintain and strengthen reading skills.

SECOND GRADE NEWS

Spring is finally here . . . or is it summer? It sure is hard to tell!

Second graders are continuing to work hard on cursive writing; however, students are dis-

couraged from writing in cursive until they have learned all the letters. Students will begin

to learn capital cursive letters toward the end of April. Second graders are learning how to

take care of their bodies. They are excited to get outside and have fun staying healthy and

getting fit! Just a reminder that our students will be doing MAP testing April 12-27th, so

please make sure your child gets plenty of rest and eats a good breakfast each morning.

Keep reading and do not forget to return your child's Reading In Action Calendar at the end

of the month!

THIRD GRADE NEWS

Third graders enjoyed a wonderful presentation of Miss Nelson is Missing performed by

Spotlight on Kids March 2nd. Many Adams intermediate grade students were among the

performers. We are proud of our students’ good behavior at the Janesville Performing

Arts Center. Miss Nelson is Missing is part of our Making Meaning supplemental reading

program.

We are wrapping up our nutrition lessons with Linda Marshall from the UW-Extension.

Students have learned about the new My Plate nutrition guidelines which replace the food

pyramid, and have sampled many healthy grain, fruit, and vegetable snacks.

Upcoming Events:

MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) testing: throughout April

Field Trips:

Frances Willard School Visits: May 21 - Hodkiewicz , May 22 - Jacobson,

May 23 – Ludeking , May 24 - Smith

Lincoln-Tallman House & Oakhill Cemetery: June 6

* Both trips are part of our study of Janesville history, a component of our Social Studies

curriculum.

Reminders:

Please check the weather report each morning. Students are dressing in summer styles

when it is 40 degrees. Using layers works best.

Page 8: Sample Project

Adams Elementary Page 8

FIFTH GRADE NEWS

Fifth grade is full of action! We enjoyed a fascinating play about Sacagawea's impact on the Lewis and Clark

expedition. The Rockford Discovery Center will be our next venture on April 12. We will experience life

and physical science with hands-on displays and demonstrations. This trip will be a motivating break from

April MAP testing. Please read the informational note that went home about these important assessments.

We hope your child’s hard work and dedication to learning will shine. Be sure your children get plenty of

rest and brain-nourishing foods to support their success. After MAP testing, we will be gearing up for one of

our favorite fifth grade events - Walk Through History. Please mark your calendars for Thursday, May 31.

As a final note, we would like to thank fifth grade families for supporting our efforts to maintain high stan-

dards for behavior and learning. With our revised behavior plan, the students have significantly improved

learning time as a result of their positive choices. Keep up the great work fifth graders!

SUMMER SCHOOL READING CLASSES BY MRS. BANDSMA, TITLE I TEACHER

It’s hard to believe, but summer is just around the corner! With that in mind, I would like to encourage

you to be sure you have a plan for summer reading. Some of you will receive “invitations” to summer

school reading classes for your children. Please, if you get one of those letters, consider sending your

child to the class. It is amazing how much reading progress is lost by children who do not practice dur-

ing the summer months. Remember, there are also other reading classes as well as other fun things to

do. Don’t forget about the summer library program because that is also a great source of motivation for

your children.

Have fun and…READ, READ, READ, READ……

FOURTH GRADE NEWS

The fourth graders have a lot to look forward to this last quarter of the school year. They will attend field

trips to Madison’s Capitol, Old World Wisconsin, J.S.O.L., and the 4th grade track meet. We will also have a

“Wisconsin Day” at the end of the school year!

Please remember to send your child to school with appropriate clothing for going outside for recess. Unless it

is 60 degrees outside, students must wear their coats. If students do not bring their coats to school, they will

have to stay inside for recess.

Reading logs are also due weekly and students are expected to read five out of the seven days of the

week.

Thank you for your continued support. Please contact us with any questions or concerns.

Request for School Transfer/Placement (Intra District Transfers)

within the School District of Janesville Attendance Areas

Due to Move:

If you move within the School District of Janesville during the school year and wish to remain at your current school please ask the school office for a Request to Remain in Current School Following Move to New Attendance Area Form (Blue). Complete the form and return it to the school office.

Due to Parent Choice:

If you wish to apply to have your student transferred/placed in another school within the district next school year (2012-2013), please ask the school office for a School Transfer/Placement Within the School District Form (Goldenrod). Completed forms will be accepted from December 1 through December 15, 2011 only. Submit your Request for School Transfer/Placement Within the School District Form (Goldenrod) to your home school attendance area office. Parents applying for Requests for School Transfer/Placement Within the School District will be notified of approval or disapproval by January 15, 2012. Parents applying for Requests for School Transfer/Placement Within the School District for incoming Kindergarten students will be notified of approval or disapproval after they have en-rolled their child during the Kindergarten Enrollment period with the New Student Enrollment Office. If you have ques-tions, please contact the school office of your home school attendance area.

Public School Open Enrollment Timelines

Wisconsin has announced the application period for open enrollment (also known as public school choice) be-

gins in February for the following school year. Open Enrollment laws permit children to attend a public school in

a school district other than the one in which they live.

The open enrollment application period for the 2012-13 school year is from February 6-April 30, 2012. Parents

are encouraged to apply on-line at https://www2.dpi.state.wi.us/OpenEnrollApp. Although on-line application is

recommended, paper applications may be obtained from the Department of Public Instruction or any school dis-

trict after January 2, 2012 and must be delivered (hand-delivery is recommended) to the nonresident school

district during the application period. Paper applications to attend Janesville must be submitted to the Adminis-

trative Services Department no later than 4:00 p.m. on April 30th (a postmark does not constitute timely sub-

mission). Applications turned in prior to February 6th will be returned as not valid and must be resubmitted af-

ter February 6th but before April 30th.

Enrollment in a requested school or program is subject to space and other limitations and is not guaranteed.

Transportation is the responsibility of the parent.

Under School District of Janesville board policy, students who attended the district under open enrollment the

previous year are not required to reapply for the following school year, unless they will be entering middle

school.

An application is required for each sibling in the family. For example, if a family has one child in elementary

school that has been approved for open enrollment and a new student entering kindergarten next year, the stu-

dent entering kindergarten must apply for open enrollment in order to attend the School District of Janesville.

Parents will be informed in June whether their open enrollment applications have been approved or denied. The

student’s school or program placement will be provided in June.

If you have questions, please contact the Administrative Services Office at 743-5006.

Weather Procedures

A reminder to our families about weather related closings and delays notification: The AlertNow® system

will serve as our primary means of notification. We urge you to supply your student’s school with your contact

information and updates as changes occur. WCLO and additional radio and TV stations will be contacted regard-

ing school closings or delays. Closing and delay information will be posted no later than 6:00 a.m.

Decisions on cancellation of school are made in coordination with both the Janesville Transit System and

Van Galder Bus Company. They are also based on the passage of city streets, safety of rural students, and infor-

mation from the county highway and city street departments. The final decision to delay or close rests with Su-

perintendent, Karen Schulte. Parents always have the option of keeping their child home due to inclement

weather. Your child will receive a principal excused absence. You must call your school to report your decision to

keep your child home.

The Superintendent also continues to have the option of delaying the start of school by one hour. Ele-

mentary School classes will begin at 9:20 a.m. and middle and high school classes will begin at 9:00 a.m. Spe-

cial education and early childhood classes will also report at 9:20 a.m. Elementary breakfast clubs will not serve

meals when school has been delayed.

Schools do not close early to avoid incoming snow or ice storms. This policy is to protect children who

may get home before their parents and have no access or supervision at home. There will be no athletic con-

tests and practices on days school is called off for weather reasons. The gyms will be closed.

On days when school is in session, but weather has progressively gotten worse, cancellations for after

school or evening athletics or extracurricular activities will be announced by 2:00 p.m.

Safer Lunch Visits One area of the School District of Janesville Parent Satisfaction Survey focuses on safety. The safety of all

Adams students is a priority to families and staff. Therefore, we always look for ways to improve safety at Adams

School. Many family members enjoy eating lunch with their child, and we appreciate seeing family members in

the school. We also want to ensure visitors in the school are safe, so we are changing our policy around lunch

visits to improve safety.

We are asking families to give the school at least 24 hours notice if a family member other than the legal guard-

ian(s) plans to join a child for lunch. We will need permission from the legal guardian for the lunch visit. In situa-

tions where legal guardians live in more than one household, we will need permission from both legal guardians

before we can allow the lunch visit.

You can send a note with your child to the school office at least one day before the planned lunch visit. The more

notice we have regarding a lunch visit the more time we have to confirm guardian permission. When family mem-

bers sign in for a lunch visit in the office, then the office staff will confirm we have received appropriate permis-

sion. If you anticipate a family member frequently joining a child for a lunch visit, then you can write us a note

giving that family member permission for the entire 2011-2012 school year. We would still like 24 hours ad-

vance notice of each lunch visit. This would allow the family member, rather than the legal guardian(s), to give us

the actual notice. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us improve safety at Adams School. Please contact

Sally Parks at 743-6305 with any questions about this new lunch visit policy.
