When I build these mini sculptures, I feel that nature experiences me as well as I experience nature. There is a dynamic in the process, quiet and powerful: a silent dialogue.

In this work I use psychological archetypes as my main source. They give form to the idea and suggest an emotional pattern to the shape.

For me, this work serves as a mirror reflecting how we experience life and cope with death.

Page 10: Samsara Project

I work with nature to understand my own death… Understand that I too, am in transit.

When I think about death, life comes to mind, and questions about who am I, and why am I here, emerge. Thus, my relation to the world, to nature and to art, changes…

“Samsara” is a word in Sanskrit allusive to the cycles of birth, life, death and reincarnation, common to all beings that inhabit the Earth. It´s about a cyclical concept of the existence based on continuous transformation. María Fernanda Carlos presents elements of nature as witnesses of life and death. The artist draws upon organic forms in her quest to represent a series of psychological archetypes.

The photographic documentation becomes her proposal as how to freeze the life and death of these elements. As they are transformed, they go through all the stages of life´s cycle in front of the artist.

In this natural process, María Fernanda places herself as nature itself, in the privileged position of the witness observing the continuous change, beginning and end at the same time.
