Understanding how your phone oper-ates.

Your phone is basically a radio transmitter and receiv-er.When it’s turned on, it receives and transmits radio frequency (RF) signals. When your phone is in use,the system handling your call controls the powerlevel. This power level can range from 0.006 watts to0.2 watts.

Radio frequency safety.

In 1991—1992, the Institute of Electrical andElectronics Engineers (IEEE) and the AmericanNational Standards Institute (ANSI) joined in updatingANSI’s 1982 standard for safety levels with respect tohuman exposure to RF signals. More than 120 scien-tists, engineers, and physicians from universities, gov-ernment health agencies, and industry developed thisupdated standard after reviewing the available bodyof research. In 1993, the Federal Communications(FCC) adopted this updated standard in a regulation. In August 1996, the FCC adopted a hybrid standardconsisting of the existing ANSI/IEEE standard and theguidelines published by the National Council ofRadiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP).

The design of the phone complies with these updat-ed standards. Of course, if you want to limit RF expo-sure even further than the updated standard, you canchoose to control the duration of your calls and oper-ate your phone in the most power-efficient manner.

Protecting your battery.

For best battery performance, you should followthese guidelines:

Only use Samsung-approved batteries and desk-top chargers. These chargers are designed tomaximize battery life. Using other batteries orchargers will invalidate your warranty and maycause damage as well.

To avoid damage, only charge the battery in temperatures that range from 32° F to 104° F.

Never dispose of the battery by incineration(fire).

Keep the metal contacts at the battery baseclean.

Do not attempt to disassemble or short-circuitthe battery, as injuries or burns may result.

You may need to recharge the battery if it hasnot been used for a long period of time.

Replace the battery when it no longer providesacceptable performance. It can be charged hun-dreds of times before it will need to be replaced.

Do not allow metal objects or liquids to contactor short-circuit the battery terminals, as injuriesor burns may result.

To avoid damage, store the battery in tempera-tures ranging from -4° F to 185° F, and avoid leav-ing the battery unused for very long periods.Follow these storage rules:

Following safety guidelines.

To operate your phone safely and efficiently, youshould always follow any special guidelines in a givenarea, and turn your phone off in areas where use isforbidden or when it may cause interference or dan-ger.

Using your phone near other electronicdevices.

Most modern electronic equipment is shielded fromradio frequency (RF) signals. However, RF signalsfrom PCS telephones may affect inadequately shield-ed electronic equipment.

RF signals may affect improperly installed or inadequately shielded electronic operating and entertain-ment systems in motor vehicles. Check with the man-ufacturer or its representative to determine if thesesystems are adequately shielded from external RF sig-nals.You should also check with the manufacturerregarding any equipment that has been added toyour vehicle.Consult the manufacturer of any person-

¤

¤

al medical devices (such as pacemakers and hearingaids) to determine if they are adequately shieldedfrom external RF signals.Turn off the phone inhealthcare facilities and request permission beforeusing the phone near medical equipment.

Turn off your phone before flying.

You should turn off your phone before boarding anyaircraft. To prevent possible interference with aircraftsystems, U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations require you to have permission from acrew member to use your phone while the plane ison the ground. To prevent any risk of interference,FCC regulations prohibit using your phone while theplane is in the air.

Restricting children’s access to yourphone.

Your phone should not be played with by children. They could hurt themselves and others, damage thephone, or make calls that increase your Samsung bill.

Turn off your phone in dangerousareas.

To avoid interfering with blasting operations, youshould turn off your phone when in a blasting areaor in other areas with signs indicating that two-wayradios should be turned off. Construction crews useremote-controlled RF devices to set off explosives.

Turn off your phone when you are in any area with apotentially explosive atmosphere. It is rare, but yourphone or its accessories could generate sparks.Sparks could cause an explosion or a fire resulting inbodily injury or even death.

Areas with a potentially explosive atmosphere areoften, but not always clearly marked. They include

Page 49: Samsung 3500

fueling areas such as gas stations; below deck onboats; fuel or chemical transfer or storage facilities;areas where the air contains chemical or particlessuch as grain, dust, or metal powders; and any otherarea where you would normally be advised to turnoff your vehicle engine.

Do not transport or store flammable gas, liquid, or explosives in the compartment of any vehicle that contains your phone or accessories.

Cautions.

Any changes or modifications to your phone notexpressly approved in this document could void yourwarranty for this equipment and void your authorityto operate this equipment. Only use approved batter-ies, antennas, and chargers. The use of any unautho-rized accessories may be dangerous and will invali-date the phone warranty if said accessories causedamage or a defect to the phone.

Although your phone is quite sturdy, it is a complexpiece of hardware and can be broken. Use common-sense guidelines to avoid dropping, hitting, bending,or sitting on it.
