    Sound Bar (HW-C450)Troubleshooting

    Mike Vigliotti

    Assistant Manager, CE Product Support

After you exchange the Main or Touch Key boards on the HW-C450, you may find that the

Touch Key does not respond to any commands. The most frequent cause of this problem

is mismatched firmware on the Main and Touch Key boards. Consequently, after you re-

place either of these boards, you must run a firmware update.

    Firmware Update Procedure

    1. Prepare 2 blank USB memory sticks and mark them USB 1 and USB 2

    2. Go to GSPN to download the necessary firmware listed under HW-C450.

    C450_USB1_Disc_1.zip

    C450_USB__Disc_2.zip

    3. Unzip each file onto a separate USB memory stick. See below for details

    4. Prepare the HW-C450 you want to update. Power it on and keep it in Analog mode

  • Page 2

Volume 7, Issue 8 Consumer Electronics Newsletter Samsung Tech Talk

    5. Insert USB1 into the rear of the Sound Bar to start the update.

The updating sequence runs as follows:

    6. Confirm the new firmware:

    a. Power off the Sound Bar.

    b. Press and hold the DRC button on the remote control.

    c. The Sound Bar will turn on. Let go of the DRC button.

The new 75 inch 2012 LED UN75ES9000 is slated to be released in the US market shortly. It contains all the Interactive

Smart TV features of the 2012 top of the line Models.

A key repair item is the Retractable MoIP Module (Figure 1).

Pushing down on the retractable MoIP Module alternately opens and closes the module. If the module is closed, a pop

up screen appears on the screen (Figure 1) stating The TVs camera and microphone are currently closed. Voice and

motion control, and related applications cant be used. Open the camera to use these functions.

Figures 2 (below) and 3 (next page) show the layout and wiring diagram of the UN75ES9000, respectively.

The figures display the MOIP Module, Main Board, T-CON, SMPS, Wi-Fi Module, Bluetooth Module, Function Control

(same as all E Model Jog Function Controls), and Speakers.

Figure 4 below shows the SMPS Power Supply and CN201 Pin Map from the Power Supply to/from the Main Board and

the important Power On Sequence. A small PC is in the upper left corner of the SMPS for Backlight Pin Point Dimming

Control. This is very similar to the larger version Pin Point Dimming Control Board found on the D8000 LED models. Of

special note is that the LED Backlight can be activated for testing by simply removing CN201 before applying power to

    the TV.

Figure 5 shows the two LED Drive connectors CN802A and CN802B. A total of 16 sets of LED Drives (R1 thru R8 and

L1 thru L8) are used for Backlight Pin Point Dimming Operation. This configuration is very similar to the D8000 LED TVs.

    Special Operation Test:

The backlight will continue to operate with either CN802A or CN802B removed.

The 18 pin CN802B can be inserted into the 22 pin CN802A (following the same pin orientation) and used to operate

those 8 sets of LEDs during testing.

The Main board is identical in operation to the ES8000 Series TVs. Video troubleshooting, shown in Figure 6 below, is

also the same. The trouble shooting procedure includes using Factory Mode to view Echo-P patterns from the Main

Board and T-CON patterns from the T-CON Board to determine Main board/LVDS Cable vs. T- CON Board failures.

If the two T-Con patterns found in Service Mode do not appear on the screen, use the Echo-FP Post Test Pattern, which

is also generated on the T-CON board.

Symptom: Half the screen has a RED solarisation effect.

Picture 1 shows the problem: RED solarisation on the bottom of the screen. Your first impulse is probably to replace the

panel, but if you look closely, youll notice that solarisation appears only on the right side of the screen. The left side

does not show the problem. This tells you its not a panel issue. What, then, should you consider? The signal source,

PCB, or LVDS cable connections. To see if its a signal source issue, enter the service mode and check the test pat-

terns. This is shown in Picture 2. Notice that in service mode, the right side is all RED, showing you that the signal

source is not the problem. This leaves three items as the probable cause: the Main PCB, the LVDS, or the T-Con. In this

case, the cause was the LVDS cable connector on Main PCB. It was not closing tightly enough. Putting hand pressure

on the connector caused the problem to come and go. Replacing the Main PCB resolved this problem.

When troubleshooting the drive boards on a 43 D series plasma TV, sometimes it seems that the only repair option is to

replace both boards and hope its not the panel. Although sometimes this can be the solution, its not usually the most

economical, especially for units that are out of warranty. Assuming you found that the SMPS was in good working order,

but the unit is still going into shutdown, the following is a quick procedure to confirm the Y-boards operation or failure.

    1. Remove AC and then isolate the Y-board by removing the connectors shown below in figures A, B, and C (X-power,

    X-data, Y-data).

    2. Apply AC power, turn on the unit, and then check the Vscan voltage. The voltage should be close to the voltage

shown on the panel sticker. This confirms dc-dc converter operation on the Y-Board.

    3. Perform the following two diode tests to confirm the operation of the Output FETs. As with any diode test, you should

see a .4 to .7Vdc drop in one direction and infinite when meter leads are reversed.

Netflix has become the most popular application for Samsung Blu-ray players. Lately, we have had some complaints

from customers who have been unable to connect to Netflix to stream their movies. This is typically caused by incorrect

network settings or poor communication with Netflix by the customers Internet Service Provider.

To help rectify these problems, we have made some improvements in our software on certain 2011 and 2012 models

that will help with certain Netflix error messages. Read below for details.

Error messages that can appear when customers try to play Netflix titles:

Were having trouble playing this title

    Unable to connect

    Unable to retrieve title

We are having trouble playing the title right now

    Cannot retrieve movie title

Cannot play this title at the moment, please try again later

We're having a problem playing this title

    Unable to connect to Netflix

Unable to play this title right now, please pick a different title or try again later

Models with New Firmware as of Aug 1st

    Additional Troubleshooting

If you update the firmware and you are still unable to stream any Netflix titles, try the steps below:

Manually change the DNS server on the Blu-ray to a public DNS.

    Settings > Network > Network settings > IP Settings > Manual DNS > 8.8.8.8

Be sure the time zone is set correctly in the settings menu of the Blu-ray.
