Samsung Galaxy Tab A: Charging

The tablet must be charged before use, however does not need to be fully charged for setup. Try to plug it in somewhere accessible so you can continue with setup while it charges.

1. Attach the USB cable to the included power adaptor

1. Plug in to the multipurpose jack at the bottom of the tablet and charge via an accessible wall socket

1. Hold down the power button for 2-3 seconds to switch the tablet on

1. Press and hold the power key (top right) for a few seconds to switch the device on

1. If the device does not switch on:a. Please ensure you have

charged the device for at least half an hour

1. Select your language - the default should be English (United Kingdom)

1. Tap the blue arrow to proceed

Note: While you can choose another language if preferred, we recommend using English (UK) if you wish to use this guide for reference

The next screen is for WiFi setup. If you have WiFi in your home:

1. Locate the name and password for the network. This is usually found on the router.

1. Select the network name and enter the password, and tap ‘Connect’then ‘Next’ once ‘Connected’ appears

Use the eye button to show the password as it’s typed (ensure you are in a private location when doing this)

Select today’s date and the correct time. Please note this is important as if you use the default time some updates and features may not work properly.

We recommend that automatic backup, location and scanning features are switched off at this stage, and can be switched on later from the device settings if required. Tap on the blue toggles to switch these on and off as preferred.

Samsung Galaxy Tab A: Screen Lock

The next screen will ask you to set up device protection using one of the following - this is highly recommended.

You will require this for future access -so remember what you choose or make a note somewhere safe

● Pattern - Draw a pattern on a 9x9 grid, covering at least 4 dots

● PIN - Set a PIN with at least 4 digits. Remember to not use something too obvious like your birthday or ‘1234’

● Password - Set a password with at least 4 letters, numbers or symbols - remember our password tips from page 22!

The recommended apps will be pre-ticked - tap on the tick to deselect any of these you do not want to download

If you’re not sure, untick them for now as you can choose to install them later

Note that if you are not using WiFi, installing apps can use up significant amounts of data, so do choose only the ones you are likely to use at this stage

1. Take the SIM card out of the packaging

1. There are three SIM sizes - standard, micro and nano.

1. Break out the nano SIM option - this is the smallest option

Keep the packaging, welcome booklet and top-up card in a safe place for future reference

1. FInd the ejection pin(attached to the outside of the box containing the Quick Start Guide)

1. Insert the ejection pin into the hole next to the SIM card tray (top left hand side of the tablet) to pop out the tray

1. Gently press the nano-SIM card into the tray, with the metal part facing down. Ensure fixed firmly before re-inserting the tray

1. Press and hold the power key (top right) for a few seconds to switch the device on

1. Wait for the tablet to load the home screen

1. Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap on the notification that says “Sign in to network”

(if the notification does not show up, restart the device by pressing the power key and choosing ‘restart’

If you have an email address, you may also wish to register an account with EE by tapping the ‘register’ button. This allows you to manage your account with EE, but is optional

When you tap ‘Activate’, the window will automatically close. Your SIM should now be up and running!

To test it out:

● Tap on the ‘Google’ folder on your home screen● Tap on ‘Chrome’ to open the browser● Try searching for something

If search results come up, your device is connected to the Internet and ready to use. If not, try restarting the device and following the instructions to activate your SIM again

To log in or create an account:

1. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen

Remember: You will need this password to access email and other Google tools in future

● Use a mixture of letters, numbers and symbols

● Don’t use any elements of your or your family’s names, address or dates of birth

5. You will be prompted to add a phone number. The device will autofill your new SIM phone number, however you may wish to replace this with a phone number you use more often. Tap ‘Yes, I’m in’ and follow the instructions given

This will allow you to access your account in future if you forget your password. If you would prefer to skip this, select ‘Skip’ at the bottom of the page

6. On the review page, tap ‘Next’ and then read the terms and conditions

7. Tick the boxes to confirm you agree with the terms, and then tap ‘Create Account’ to continue

8. The next screen will ask if you would like to back up data to Google Drive. Use the blue toggle to switch this on or off and tap ‘Accept’

Your Google account is now set up!

This is the account you will use when you download an app, log in to Gmail or use other Google services

You can manage or remove this account from the tablet in future by going to Settings > Accounts and backup > Accounts and tapping on the account name

You can also use your browser app (e.g. Chrome) to go to myaccount.google.com, where you can change your password and manage account settings

● Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to access apps and settings

● Rotate the tablet to move between landscape and portrait screens

● Tap on the central square button at any time to return to the home screen

To change your screen lock:

1. Tap ‘Apps’, and then ‘Settings’ or swipe down from the top and select the cog symbol

1. Scroll down to ‘Lock screen” and tap on “Screen lock type”

1. Enter the current pattern, PIN or password, then choose the new method you’d like to use and follow instructions to set up

If the device is unresponsive or frozen, press and hold the power key and the volume down key at the same time for more than 7 seconds to restart the device

This may be useful if you cannot navigate between pages, and tapping and swiping are not working.

If the tablet won’t start up, it may need to be charged

To access your tablet again later:

● Switch the device on (and off) using the power key - just hold for 2-3 seconds● Remember the screen lock you set earlier? You’ll need this each time you switch

In this section we’ll cover some of the steps to follow if your device stops responding

Frozen screen

If the tablet is not responding to tapping and/or swiping, try the following:

● Wait 10 seconds before trying the action again

● Close any apps that are not responding

If that doesn’t work:

● Press the power button to turn the screen off

● Press the power button again and unlock

Samsung Galaxy Tab A: Restarting

If your tablet is still not responding, it may need to be restarted

Restart

If the tablet screen is on:

● Press and hold the power key for 2-3 seconds until the option to restart appears

● Tap ‘Restart’ and wait for your device to turn itself off and on again

If the option does not appear, hold the power and volume down keys for 7 seconds to force a restart

Blank screen or won’t turn on

Firstly, plug your tablet in to charge (see p.7)

We recommend leaving the tablet charging for 30 minutes before trying to turn it on again

Once charged, hold down the power button for 2-3 seconds

If restarting is not working, or if the screen will not turn on after trying the previous steps, you may need to reset your device

Please be aware this will reset your device and wipe all files, apps and settings. All steps on p.45-47 should be followed before proceeding to the next page

Samsung Galaxy Tab A: Resetting

With the screen off:

1. Hold the volume up, home and power buttons at the same time

2. When the menu pictured (left) appears, let go of the buttons

3. Use the volume buttons to move the highlight to Wipe data/factory reset and press the power button

4. Use the volume up/down button to highlight Yes and press the power button

5. When the main menu reappears, press the power button to restart

6. You’ll now need to set up your tablet from p.10 of this guide
