With the latest televisions, Blu-ray players and other home entertainment devices, advances in technology have

made it possible to do all sorts of things we couldn’t do before. No more traipsing down to the video store to rent a movie or driving to the cinema to watch the latest 3D blockbuster. No need to get to the newsagents to grab a newspaper. We don’t even have to walk into the study and fire up the PC to scan Facebook or send an email to our mates in another city or across the globe.

All of these things can be done in front of the telly, and they can be done right now. And, just like using the TV, it’s really easy to

do – minimum setup, fewer confusing wires and as simple to operate as an ordinary remote control.

Technology and design are also constantly evolving and enriching digital entertainment in our homes. Ever-increasing picture and sound quality affords us the most immersive and realistic experiences possible, while innovative design makes the products themselves look as appealing and attractive as the most sophisticated furnishings.

All you need to know is what to look for and the right stuff to buy. That’s the purpose of this guide: to show you all the incredible things you can do and what you need to do it.

The focal point in everyone’s home entertainment setup, the television has evolved almost beyond recognition, and the new generation of ‘connected’ TVs are treasure-troves of entertainment possibilities, bursting at the

seams with different ways of accessing, controlling and sharing all the information that drives our lives.

So while image quality and screen size remain very important to any decision you make when choosing a new LED or plasma television, there are now all sorts of other considerations and they could be summed up with the word ‘connected’.

Your TV isn’t content with sitting quietly in the corner and spinning up the odd DVD or still picture slideshow but, instead, wants to spread its wings and become an entertainment portal for your home.

Asking the right questionsSo it’s important to find out if your new TV will play nicely with others, because not all of them do. This is where you need to ask some critical questions that go beyond looking at all the stickers on the bezel. What can you connect up to the TV? How many HDMI input sockets does it have? Will it connect to the internet? Does it have a wireless adapter built-in, or do I need to buy a dongle? Can it cope with 3D? Am I going to have to juggle 20 different remote controls just to get it all to work? In short, you need to know what the TV can do and how well it can do it.

Get the right equipment and the answers can be thrilling. Samsung has been asking the same questions and making sure the resulting products will blow you away. Capable of handling regular TV, streaming and downloadable video and music from the web, chat, internet and all those digital files you have in various devices around the house, the right TV will also make it a snap to gather them to you and display them up there on the big screen.

And it’s not just the technical innards that have benefitted from this scrutiny, as the external design of the televisions can have a significant impact on your viewing experience, including reducing the width of the bezel on the TV to make it feel like you could reach out and actually touch what you’re watching. Using the highest-quality materials and embracing a design ethos that complements or even enhances your interior spaces, today’s premium TVs are becoming a focal point in themselves; beautiful even when switched off!

Great valueBetter still, you won’t be paying through the nose for all this wizardry. Call it economies of scale, call it progress, or call it plain ol’ TV maker munificence, but these latest Smart TVs* buzzing with dazzling gadgetry won’t cost you any more than a non-Smart TV of a year ago. That’s right: you can have your metaphorical TV cake and eat it, too.

Premium home entertainment gear no longer has the exclusive on 3D, with the technology now appearing in Samsung’s affordable D6000 and D4000 LED televisions, as well as five BD players and four home theatre systems.

If you’re on a quest for the best possible picture, the D8000 is the destination you seek. Crammed full of some of the most advanced technology available today, this incredible LED TV has made true believers of everyone who witnesses the fusion of

function and design for themselves. World-class 3D image and sound handling work with Micro Dimming, Wide Color Enhancement Plus and Ultra Clear Panel technology to deliver the most breathtaking imagery available.

The incredibly slim bezel – only 5mm wide – conceals all the vital electronic connections and LED edge lighting that conventional television panels struggle to fit into a frame more than five times as thick, which means the D8000 is more than just gorgeous, it’s a master technology statement. Extra Brownie points, too, because from a visual perspective, the super-svelte frame removes the traditional barrier between screen and its surroundings and, with it, any break in perception between viewer and viewed.

Plus with built-in wireless for easy connection to a home network, the ability to play media stored on phones, cameras and PCs, plus access via the Smart Hub to a fantastic supply of web-based entertainment, it’s hard to believe a television so thin can be so full of fun.

Edge-lit LEDSuperior to backlighting, side-mounted LEDs deliver deeper blacks, purer whites and, coupled with clever diffusing technology, brightness is carried right to the middle of the screen.

Micro DimmingPrecise control of the amount of light delivered to individual pixels delivers extraordinary detail and contrast.

Wide Colour Enhancer PlusA friendly name for complex mathematical processing that, applied to the video signal that feeds the pixels in the D8000, reveals more colours and detail. The result: superlative pictures.

Ultra Clear PanelAn advanced surface material that overlays the LCD panel and works to eliminate diffusion to deliver a clearer, brighter picture and wide viewing angles.

DesignIncredible, seamless ‘One Design’ with its teeny 5mm bezel delivers a more immersive picture experience than ever.

AllShareStream photos, videos and music stored on DLNA-certified PCs, smartphones, cameras and camcorders to the big screen – without fuss and without wires – and control it all with the TV remote.

PVRPlug a USB stick or hard drive into one of the set’s three USB ports, press a button on the remote and, voila, you’re recording TV.

Smart HubConnected to a home broadband network via its built-in Wi-Fi, the D8000 provides entrée to a suite of connected goodness, including movies on-demand and extra TV channels from BigPond*, apps, web browsing, powerful content search tools, Skype+, Twitter, Facebook and more.

THE DETAILS

A far cry from the sleek flat form of modern sets, the first televisions had miniature screens set into cabinets with a footprint the size of a bar fridge.

www.samsung.com.au/tv10 vision

The clearest way to think of today’s new ‘Smart TVs’ is to recall your smart mobile phone and how you use it. Smart TVs work in a similar way, so let’s cut to the heart of the matter: what they do and why it’s cool.

Holistic smartsIt’s dubbed ‘Smart TV’ not just because of the way it gives you access to the ‘connected’ features like social media and the internet – although that’s a great part of it – but also how the TV is designed from the ground up to provide the best possible experiences.

So the Smart TV concept stretches to the physical design of the television, aiming to bring viewers closer in to the experience. It extends to the way the image is received, composed and relayed to the screen, with several very smart technologies working together to ensure that what you see looks totally incredible; 2D to 3D conversion, image layer reduction, sound enhancement and micro dimming all combining to give the smoothest, sharpest, most lifelike picture.

And the Smart TV concept continues right through to the way you interact with the TV itself, to the interfaces you use to search for videos and photos, the way the display changes to accommodate your friends

The panelYour TV can now do most of what your PC and your phone can do. Now, that’s smart.

smart tv >

list and discussion threads, and how your TV goes looking for the content that resides among the other devices throughout your home.

What do we mean by that last point? Well, everyone these days has digital files stored somewhere – music files you use on your MP3 player, digital still photos from your holidays or of the kids at the park, amusing videos sent by your laugh-a-minute work friends, and chances are that they’re scattered over several gadgets, like your PC, mobile phone, tablet, media hub or camera.

What you’re looking for is compatibility with something called ‘DLNA’, or ‘Digital Living Network Alliance’. DLNA is simply a label that means it will work with any other device with DLNA certification, allowing you to move files across from one device to another over an internet connection, be it wirelessly or via an Ethernet cable. Samsung integrates DLNA compatibility so completely into its Smart TVs that you’ll never even have to worry about how it works or why, just that it does and allows you to more easily grab your files from connected DLNA devices, wherever they may be in your home.

There’s smart, and then there’s really smart. For the top-of-the-pile in Smart TVs, you want the perfect combination of style, picture performance, capability and ease of use. The Samsung Smart TV range, available in both plasma and LED*, is the only one that offers all those elements, is 3D* capable and provides a ‘Smart Hub’, with access to the world’s first TV app store. Even the affordable Series 6 model plasmas and LED models from the D5000 series up offer the Smart Hub* feature, plus wireless content sharing with your other gadgets via AllShare*. The premium units incorporate the most cutting-edge design and sweeten the deal with a full web browser on the D8000 plasma and D6500 series LED and up, plus there’s a neat QWERTY full-keyboard remote with the D8000 LED and D8000 plasma TVs.

www.samsung.com.au/tv12 vision

You don’t need to connect a Smart TV to the internet to enjoy great design and picture quality, or 3D, but to access the Facebook, Twitter and Skype features on Smart Hub, as well as its web browsing and Samsung Apps functions, you’ll need a high speed broadband account such as ADSL 2+ or cable, plus a router to set up a home network. There are two ways to establish a wireless link between a Smart TV and other networked devices:

1 Mated with Samsung’s wireless router, TVs with built-in WiFi will detect compatible devices within one foot (around 30cm) and automatically connect, avoiding the usual tedious network security and setup protocols. (Don’t worry, though – your network firewalls will reduce the risk of any net-borne nasties.) This ‘One Foot Connection’ feature effectively acts as a WiFi hotspot for the whole family’s compatible devices, making casual connections – like if visitors bring their netbook loaded with holiday photos over to your house – as easy as. What’s more, those compatible devices can be used anywhere covered by your home WiFi network. If, of course, your network router is outside the one-foot range, simply navigate to ‘Network’ in your Smart TV’s setup menu, enter a few setup details and a security key and you’re away!

2 For Smart TVs without built-in WiFi, there’s Samsung’s Wireless LAN Adaptor. This plugs into the back of the those sets, connecting to your wireless router with the same minimal setup.

Smart TV meets internet – what you need

Not just ‘connected’ TVGetting connected to the internet may not sound so flash these days, but the truth is that most ‘connected’ televisions aren’t quite what they seem. Just because it says ‘internet TV’ somewhere on the packaging, doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll be able to surf the ‘net via your TV.

Most ‘internet TVs’ actually only allow a very limited connection to the web, essentially creating ‘closed’ connections to service providers such as BigPond Movies, YouTube, dedicated internet TV channels or ‘catch-up’ TV from the likes of the ABC or SBS. That’s great, giving you a lot of extra content for free, but the most advanced TVs will now offer complete internet browsing freedom, like you have on your computer, and if that’s what you want, you need to ask for a TV with a fully-enabled web browser.

Just as an ‘internet TV’ badge doesn’t mean your TV can fully connect to the internet, some of the other terminology can lead to confusion too; the difference between a ‘widget’, for instance, and an ‘app’.

Widgets are a good way to boost the content offering on a TV, but they have very limited function. A clock widget, for example, might show you the current time in Bogata, for example, or the weather in Helsinki, but that’s it.

A true ‘app’, on the other hand, is a fully integrated application, or bit of software that, when initiated, will offer an entire suite of information or services, or enable more user interaction.

Quite often, they’ll boot up in their own space on the screen and, properly managed, should fully integrate with what’s already there – a good example of this is the Social TV* app on Samsung Smart TVs, which allows you to interact with your Facebook, Twitter

Instant hot-spot: Paired with a wireless Smart

TV, Samsung’s One Foot Router enables fuss-free

connection of compatible gear over a home network

Samsung D6500, D7000 and D8000 Series LED TVs and D6000, D7000 and D8000 Series plasma TVs come with WiFi built-in, and so do many of Samsung’s 2011 home entertainment products. These include the HT-D5530, HT-D5550 and HT-D6750 surround sound systems, and the BD-D6500, BD-D6900, BD-D8500 and BD-D8900 (pictured) Blu-ray players.

or Google Talk account while keeping the program you were watching up on the screen as you browse.

A new family gathering Combine the freedom to fully browse the internet with functionality that allows you to search for and download video, music, news and apps from a central location on your TV, and you start to appreciate what having a truly Smart TV means.

From the one screen, you’ll be able to sit back on your couch and peruse all the digital entertainment your eyes can handle, moving through choices that previously would have meant you shifting to your PC elsewhere in the house and sitting in front of a small computer monitor to find what you need. With a Smart TV and wireless transmission, the living room moves from being the focal point

for Friday movie nights to the focal point for all of your family entertainment, from laughing over the latest ‘blooper’ videos to sharing memories leafing through a digital photo album, playing games in a virtual casino, checking Wikipedia for the latest facts, chatting with your mate interstate while you watch the footy together, or avoiding the real-life hassle and expense of attending a gig to settle down with the whole family and watch your favourite band perform.

The Samsung Smart TV can gather together the separate strands of your family’s digital amusement and bring them all back together into the lounge room. Now that’s social media!

To reap the benefits of all this connectivity you will, of course, need a broadband internet connection and a router. You can use wired connections between the router, TV and other devices if you wish, but team up with a Smart TV that has built-in wireless, and you have the ultimate ‘no wires’ home entertainment network.

Settle down with the whole family and watch your favourite band perform

smart tv > smart hub

For SmartHub and AllShare disclaimers, see page 2.

The Smart Hub The Smart Hub is a catch-all term for the suite of connected goodness appearing on Samsung Smart TVs, as well as the one-screen location that provides entree to them. While not intended to entirely replace your computer, the Smart Hub on your Samsung 2011 TV brings together internet access, apps, on-demand content services, your favourite social networking sites, devices connected to your TV, and any digital content – wherever it may be – that interests you.

Divided clearly into sections for easy navigation, the Smart Hub screen lets you have up to 10 separate ‘profiles’

for your Smart TV, meaning that each family member can have their own login and, when they do, they’ll be presented with their very own, customised Smart Hub area, with their own apps, folders and even personalised recommendations!

Smart Hub features are available on Smart TVs as well as select Blu-ray players and home theatre systems. (Check out the buyers guides on pages 52–95 for more details.)

Even if you were a late adopter with the smartphone, or are only just now getting on board with why it’s cool 2 txt ur m8s, there’s little doubting that we use our

phones for a lot more than just talking. To give a typical example, you can now be

speaking to someone on the phone while you’re walking to meet them, call up the ‘Notes’ app mid-chat to write down a thought that occurred to you, use Google Maps to get walking directions to the café you’re meeting them at, switch to a calendar to enter a reminder to follow up later and then, when you meet them at the café, enter their business card into your phone via a scanner app, send them yours via Bluetooth transfer, show them a PowerPoint presentation you prepared earlier, then book a taxi to get home again afterwards.

Not so long ago, that would have taken a whole lot more co-ordination, paperwork and personnel to do, even if you could be bothered.

When you can see what you can do on the big screen, you may want to ditch that pokey PC.

Smart TVs will transform the way we all use our televisions

In the home entertainment realm, it’s going to be Smart TVs, and their app* equivalent, that will transform the way we all regard – and use – our televisions. As we’ve found with our phones, there’s no perceptible limit to the number and nature of the apps that can be created and it’s possible to be pleasantly surprised on virtually a daily basis with some ingenious new application that you soon find you can’t live without.

Beam me up scottyImmersed in your home network – because that broadband internet connection is essential, remember, and there’s nothing that says ‘home entertainment expert’ more than having a wireless one – you’re like Kirk in the Captain’s chair of the Enterprise, brandishing the Smart TV remote and being the focal point for anything and everything of any meaning in the universe. Or at least your digital entertainment universe.

It’s not as if you have to be a news junkie or an incorrigible gossip to find something to love in the app store. There are so many apps covering such a wide range of interests, that it’d be more surprising if nothing at all appealed.

If you can’t get enough of movies, get your film freak fix with apps that let you stream the latest episodes of your favourite TV shows, glean the latest details on forthcoming releases, read screenplays and interviews with the stars or enter movie trivia contests. If you’re sports mad, then there are apps that keep track of scores (often live), reveal line-ups, report team news, show highlight clips or host fantasy leagues.

Those with a craving for factual information have a goldmine at the press of their remote controls, reporting weather conditions, news, current affairs, history, biographies and so forth, but if you’re not as concerned with the facts as a good story, then the ‘social media’ are just seconds away, providing chat rooms, forums and live video calling. Even gamers are catered for with TV apps, encompassing everything for the virtual gambler with card, tile and counter-based games, as well as number, quiz and challenge games for outfoxing compulsive puzzlers.

SOCIAL NEWSSamsung is the first company to open a TV apps store, accessible using any of its Smart TV televisions, Blu-ray players and home theatre systems. Exactly as it’s done with over 4000 apps for the ‘Wave’ smartphone, Samsung will make a huge number of apps available for download via your television, ranging from the latest games and fun stuff through to useful utilities, news and information services.

Most of the initial wave will be free, with some paid apps made available in the future, offering more content or complex functionality. Interestingly, Samsung also holds regular ‘apps contests’ to encourage app providers to create services and information that are ‘local’, country-specific services with Korea, France, Brazil and the US already responding strongly to the call for such local apps.

One of the most prolific providers of content for web-enabled TVs is Telstra, thanks to its BigPond

Movies and BigPond TV services. If you were explaining the BigPond

Movies* service to a space alien or, say, someone who grew up with the VCR in the 1970s, they’d probably become giddy and faint with shock when you explained what it entailed.

You get your movie right away*, and without leaving the couch. It starts playing in a flash, the title you want is always ‘in stock’, there are never any late fees, and you can pause, rewind and fast-forward through it at will. It’s like magic, and it comes courtesy of a Smart TV app.

There is currently an extensive range of titles on the BigPond Movies’ virtual

shelves to choose from, across all sorts of categories and that’s only set to expand. Rental costs are on par with the video store, and it’s easy to pay too, because you get the familiar ‘shopping cart’ seen in many other online stores and can check out with a credit card, BigPond voucher or via your regular Telstra bill.

So, check out the gorgeous Angelina in Salt, mess with your mates’ brains and watch Inception, starring Leonardo diCaprio, host a girls’ night in with Sex and the City or punish the kids when they haven’t done their homework by making them sit through The Search for Santa Paws. At time of writing, the majority of BigPond movies are offered in standard definition, although HD versions are on the way in the future.

IPTV, or Internet Protocol TV, is the name given to television services that are delivered over the internet system rather than via cable, satellite or radio. Providers of information over IPTV, such as BigPond, ‘hold’ everything at their end in their system, so as the viewer, you can pick and choose from whatever they have, which is often a vast list of content numbering in the many hundreds of channels. Once you’ve made your choice, only then is the content sent to your device – a Samsung Smart TV, Bu-ray player or home theatre system in this case – and you’re off.

‘Streaming’ means that you’re receiving the content files in real-time, and watching as it comes in. The alternative, downloading, usually entails moving the entire file to your PC or PVR to watch later. Streaming allows you to enjoy the music or video immediately, but if your internet connection is not fast enough the video may stutter or break up (BigPond recommends a minimum data transfer speed of 512kbps for low-quality video and over 3.5Mbps for high quality). With downloading, you have to wait a while but you can keep it and experience it at your leisure. Regardless of which method used, all on-demand content – music, TV, movies, video or games – has a download ‘cost’ associated with it. Larger files comprise more data and cost more. A single song is around 4MB, a standard definition TV show is 300–400MB, a similar quality movie around 700MB, and a high definition movie well over 1GB. So as a minimum, when choosing a broadband service provider, choose a plan with a minimum of 30GB a month – more is always better – and a download speed of 2.5 to 5 Mbps.

Big screen ecstasyBigPond TV* is also available on Samsung Smart TVs via an app. Sports fans are generously catered for here, with five of the seven available channels providing sporting content.

Aussie Rules is covered by the AFL channel, carrying footage of all regular season matches, finals replays, highlights, interviews and everything else imaginable in a channel that never sleeps, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. But if NRL is your preferred footy code, the NRL channel spans every conceivable rugby-related bridge and delivers it directly to your TV.

Another 24/7 channel, V8 TV, is your spot for everything V8 Supercars. If you like the ponies, TVN is dedicated to thoroughbred racing around the globe, providing live race coverage, tipping and commentary. Then there’s

the BigPond Sports News channel, which ensures that no tasty morsel of sporting goodness falls from your Smart TV table.

The BigPond TV offering finishes with ‘bpm’, a musical entertainment channel, and BigPond News, a 24/7 dedicated news channel with coverage of international and local news, finance, entertainment, technology and weather from the intrepid BigPond newshounds.

That was never a penalty! One further service offered by Samsung is the ‘Game Analyser’. Basically a replay function that allows users to stream any televised big game as soon as 24 hours after it’s played, the Game Analyser presents the viewer with a video of the game and a suite of controls, much like the ones found in a video editing software program.

In NRL Game Analyser, for instance, a slide control splits the match video into ‘first half’, ‘second half’ and ‘extra time’. All the significant events of the game (scoring plays, errors, fouls, penalties and even bloopers) are marked with coloured icons and all the viewer needs to do to replay them is to move the slider control to the chosen point of the game, sit back and watch.

What better way to settle an argument about whether a given penalty was deserved, or to review a big hit that has sent a player to a tribunal than to decide for yourself if he should be there?!

Data for freeAll the BigPond content – all of it; movies, music, sport, games, videos and newsy stuff – is unmetered for BigPond broadband customers. That means it doesn’t count towards your monthly usage limit, so look out for the BigPond Unmetered icon, a cheerful-looking green dot, beside the content listing as you browse.

BigPond TV and BigPond Movies expand your viewing options beyond regular broadcast TV, plus with the NRL Game Analyser app you have access to all the rugby league you can handle, whenever you want.

With an extensive and ever-expanding library of

titles, BigPond Movies is like a video store in your TV. You can look

forward to even broader entertainment choices

in the future too, as more video on-demand

service providers become available via apps on

Smart TVs.

Interfacing with Social TVWhen it comes to entering information into social websites like Twitter and Facebook, you’re probably use to using some kind of keyboard, either real or virtual. So with Smart TVs, your options will be very familiar:

1. The RMC-QTD1 Flip QWERTY remote control (opposite) included with the plasma and LED D8000 models from Samsung has a full keyboard and an LCD screen, making text entry simple and fast

2. Your regular TV remote can be used as a pointer, like on your computer, to navigate around and make selections

3. Convert your smartphone or tablet to a universal remote by downloading the free Samsung app, which is available for Android-powered phones, iPhones or any Samsung ‘bada’ OS phone.

Twitter, Facebook, Skype and TV – meet the Swiss Army Knife of social networking.

Get a better(social) lifeWhether it’s Facebook, Twitter,

instant chat on Google Talk or keeping in touch via Skype, many of us carry out our connected social

business on a smart phone or laptop not at our desks at the office (because, that would be wrong), but at home after hours while watching the television. Or more precisely, in front of the TV but not really watching.

With a Samsung Smart TV you don’t have to miss your favourite TV show while updating your friend status. A Smart TV makes you the master of multi-tasking, allowing you to watch TV and post on Facebook – or tweet or chat – on the one big screen at the same time. With its AFL Game Anaysler app and sponsorship of the Essendon football club, Samsung gets what it means to be footy fan. But when you can’t get to the stadium in person, a Smart TV lets you enjoy all the usual colourful in-game banter with friends via Google Talk, Twitter or Facebook. You can even choose precisely where Tweets and friends’ comments appear: to the side of the main TV view in ‘blogging mode’; as a transparent overlay on the screen, with a smaller TV window and larger border for the social media app (like a picture-in-picture); or, if you really, really like your friends, in full screen mode, dispensing with the live TV view altogether. Look for these and other Social TV* features on LED TVs from Series D6000 to D8000, and plasma D6000 and D8000 Series models.

Samsung Electronics proudly supports a range of local sporting organisations, sponsoring Essendon FC in AFL as a Major Partner, and the NSW Institute of Sport Female Athlete of the Year 2010. This was awarded to Torah Bright for sporting excellence and recognises her gold medal win in the women’s snowboard half-pipe at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games – the first ever medal at a Winter Olympics for the NSW Institute of Sport. Internationally, Samsung has been a sponsor partner of the Olympic Games and the Asian games since 1998, while in entertainment, Samsung sponsors the Australian Film Industry Awards and proudly works with Australian brand ambassadors, Simon Baker and Tara Denis.

FACEBOOKFacebook account holders will be able to do the same thing on their Smart TVs, keeping the TV show on screen while they access their Facebook page, read about their friends’ days and post hilarious videos of kittens to their walls. With the simultaneous display feature there’s no need to keep looking down at your netbook, tablet PC or smartphone to keep an eye on what’s going on, and the benefit of the much larger display on the TV makes checking out the photos and videos a lot more fun. And for both Twitter and Facebook accounts, it’s possible to have multiple, secure log-ins for each member of your household, so only you can access your social media.

TWITTERTwitter fans can keep watching what’s showing on the television while their Twitter feeds display on a separate part of the screen. So, instead of dividing your attention between, say, your smartphone and the latest Modern Family episode, you can stay focused on the TV screen and hit ‘refresh’ to see what other Tweets have come in. Or you can mull over the day’s events with the Twitter page of the 7pm Project displayed side-by-side as the show airs, or how about letting your friends on Twitter know what you really think of the food from the contestants on My Kitchen Rules as they go through the elimination rounds – the first MKR elimination ‘cook-off’ special featured the best Tweets received being thrown up (sorry!) on the screen live during the show, so you can let everyone know what you think!

PICASAPicasa compatibility makes for easy photo viewing and sharing – instead of dragging the family off to the study to look through your photo albums on the computer monitor, all that TV real estate now becomes your private photo gallery, so you can gather everyone in the family room, get comfy and show off your photographic skills. Skype calling requires

a Skype account and Samsung’s Skype TV

camera accessory, sold separately.

For an active social experience, fire up Skype* and the optional TV camera for a free video call with friends, relatives and colleagues all over the country, or even in other parts of the world. Whether you choose to see only the person you’re talking to, shown in all their glory on the big screen, or opt for smaller video windows with you in one and the person you’re calling in the other, making Skype calls on a Smart TV will transform the experience, bringing them right into your living room. The recipient doesn’t need a similarity capable TV – just a PC or mobile phone running Skype.

Samsung’s Skype camera is capable of relaying pictures at a hi-def resolution of 720p at 30 frames per second, and the lens is adjustable so you can always be sure to be in the picture. Its four separate microphones are designed to pick up voices from over there on the couch, and setup is a cinch with the magnetised attachment. Follow these tips for Skyping success on Samsung’s D8000 plasma models and LED TVs from the D6600 Series and above:

1. Make sure your environment is well lit. The camera can handle low-light situations but no-one wants to look like they’re sitting in a dungeon.

2. Try and sit in a central position relative to the TV, but if you can’t, adjust the lens to make sure you’re framed well. And don’t sit there dressed only in your boxers.

3. Skype call quality can vary, so if you’re having patchy reception, turn off or restart the video to smooth out the connection.

We complain today about the number cluttering up our coffee tables, but time was when the remote control and

the convenience it affords simply didn’t exist. That was when, like, Hannibal was alive, though, and with progress – and the rich entertainment offerings it has brought to the TV – today’s remote control needs talents beyond flipping channels and adjusting volume.

If you’ve ever, for example, tried to use your remote with an onscreen keyboard to change the name of a recording, enter a password or surf the web, you’re probably already seething at the memory. The people in lab coats at Samsung HQ feel your rage and have brought the remote control unit into the 21st century with two options that provide a worthy companion to your brand new Smart TV.

If you like the feedback provided by a physical keyboard, the RMC-QTD1 Flip is a two-faced lovely providing a button-driven QWERTY keyboard on one side and a conventional remote control interface on the flip. A built-in screen means you don’t have to check your spelling on the TV as you type, plus, with the Anynet+ feature, you can operate compatible Blu-ray players and surround systems connected to a Smart TV – no need for multiple handsets. Now, that’s one remote to rule them all!

There’s also an app which, downloaded to mobile gadgets – including Samsung smartphones, tablet computers and iThings – allows them to do duty as a Smart TV controller. All the usual tellie controls are provided, plus there’s a virtual keyboard that communicates your content searches, Twitter feeds and Facebook posts over WiFi to your Smart TV.

When too much www is barely enough…

smart tv > smart hub – web browser

You may think you’ve already got enough devices around the house that can surf the net, but web surfing on a Smart TV comes with several neat advantages.

The most obvious benefit of web surfing on a TV is that you’re doing it while you’re ensconced in furniture that you’ve chosen for comfort and ease; not some unsupportive, madly swiveling el-cheapo office chair from the hardware store, so you’re much more likely to find the whole experience soothing.

Web surfing via the TV lends itself better to certain scenarios than trying to cram the entire family around the computer – those Skype* calls mentioned earlier (page 21) are a great example, but there are many others. Check these out…

1.Taking a tripYou go on holiday as a family, right, so how about booking one as a family? With a flight aggregator website up on the big TV screen you could award a prize to whoever spots the best price quickest, then head on over to some hotel booking websites to discuss where you’d like to stay. It’s like having a massive, interactive holiday brochure displayed right up in front of your eyes.

2.Going to the moviesChecking the local cinema website listings for show times would be just as convenient; rather than shouting out the film titles and screening times hoping someone will hear you and take notice, just sit them down around the TV and discuss it as a family, hopefully making for a far quicker decision. Then book the tickets online.

3Watching TVMissed your favourite show? The online ‘catch-up TV’ services offered by ABC’s iView, Nine’s ‘FixPlay’ and Seven’s ‘Plus 7’ all allow you to see stuff you missed the first time around, for free. These services provide ‘streaming’ video, so you find the episode you want to watch, click on the ‘Play’ button and start watching.

4Going to a concertYou’re watching a music video show and your favourite artist is on, with her latest hit. Inspired, you use the web browser to go to an online ticketing site to find out if and when she’s coming to your home city, and even book tickets to see her. Don’t forget to Twitter it to your friends.

5Organising a night outOrganise a date with your partner by heading to Time Out to check out what’s on. Follow up by reading a few restaurant reviews, then grabbing the phone number from the restaurant’s website to make a booking. Go to Google Maps and find out where it is, then perhaps book a couple of movie tickets online so that you can watch a flick after dinner.

Most visitedSearch engine Google regularly compiles lists of the world’s most visited websites, with the most recent including the online encyclopedia Wikipedia, Facebook and the US portals of Yahoo and MSN. With most of the globe’s computers running on Windows, the home pages of Microsoft and Windows Live rated highly too, as did those for the Bing and Firefox web browsers. Sites providing tools for people wanting to make their own websites – namely Word Press and Blogspot – were also popular, as were those hosted by the planet’s most populous country. In fact, Chinese sites accounted for a third of Google’s top 20.

smart tv > smart hub – web browser

With a massive, high definition TV screen, web pages optimised for display on a television and zoom and tab functionality, viewing and getting around the websites has been made as easy as possible. Up to three windows can be opened at one time, and while it’s easier on your eyes to print out text-heavy pages for reading offline, there’s no beating web TV for the more visual internet experiences. Here’s what we reckon web browsing on Samsung’s 8, 7 and 6 Series LED TVs and the 8 Series plasma is best for:

WATCHING CATCH-UP TV

CHECKING WEBMAIL

ONLINE SHOPPING

WATCHING MOVIE TRAILERS AND OTHER VIDEO CLIPS

MAKING BOOKINGS FOR HOLIDAYS, CINEMA AND LIVE EVENTS

SUPPLEMENTING NEWS AND TV SHOWS WITH MORE INFORMATION

Great for...

6.Emailing and paying billsEmailing, paying the bills and doing a bit of shopping may all be a little more agreeable when done from a position of comfort. Webmail, such as Gmail or Hotmail, can be accessed via the Smart TV’s browser, so you can run through your messages, delete the spam and click through all the interesting stuff even while you catch up on a spot of late-night TV.

7.Latest newsMake your TV watching a less passive pastime by taking an active interest in what’s going on. Fire up the browser to read up on the current natural disaster affecting Australians or go to a news site to learn more about why that international incident fired up in the first place – turning your findings into a family discussion in the process.

8.BankingDoing a bit of online banking while you watch a spot of golf on the TV can make the experience slightly more pleasant and, by the same token, setting up a delivery from the supermarket for the following day is a lot less stressful way of doing the weekly grocery run than hurrying up and down the aisles in the local shopping centre.

9.ShoppingTracking an item on eBay? Relieve some of the stress of watching the price going up or the fear of being outbid by kicking back with a calming glass of wine as the minutes tick down, and maybe having a laugh at the reality-show wannabees strutting around on the telly at the same time.

To really take advantage of the fact that you’re sitting in front of a huge TV with access to the internet, think of the things that you may already do while watching TV, or want to do, but can’t be bothered to get up, go to another room and boot up the computer. Perusing your Facebook and Twitter accounts probably pop into your head first, but how about tracking an item you’re interested in on Ebay?

Remember, too, that as a depository of information to complement your regular TV viewing or inform your interests, the internet is an incredible resource that can enhance your enjoyment of TV in general. And with a Smart TV, that resource is right at your fingertips.

Looking for something specific, or just looking? Enter your Search All query in at the Smart Hub page

and it will do the hard work for you. It’s like a GPS for your TV!

For Smart Hub and AllShare disclaimers, see page 2.

Great ways to find better TV, not just more TV.

It’s bad enough trying to keep track of all the digital photos you’ve taken in the past couple of decades, given how many things have built-in cameras these days – your mobile phone, netbook, laptop and desktop PC, tablet and actual

digital camera. Even the camcorder has a ‘still photo’ option! Expand that to include all the videos, movies and music you’ve been collecting and it’s clear that you’re going to need a very powerful search tool to stand a hope of finding what you need the same week you need it.

Samsung Smart TVs ride to the rescue with ‘Search All’, a pillar of the Smart Hub* experience that allows users to look for absolutely anything. Just enter a query and hit enter, and Search All will go looking for absolutely every instance of the search term across every device and area in your network.

That means programs recorded on a USB or external hard drive using the Smart TV’s PVR recording function, or any connected

It’s not as well known as it should be, but your Smart TV can even record your favourite shows. Find what you want on the EPG, use Schedule Manager to set the recording time and plug in an external hard drive, or even a tiny USB thumb drive (with a minimum write speed of 1.2MB/sec). The TV will then record to the hard drive and the show will be ready in the Smart Hub when you are.

What? It can record? How?!

Search All* will then display everything it’s found up on your TV screen in the form of a list, marked with identifying icons (a movie reel for film content, the YouTube logo for their video content, or the Twitter logo for friends’ posts mentioning the term you’ve searched for). From there, you just use the remote to tab down to what it was you specifically wanted, click on it and it’ll start playing!

So Search All can be an incredible time saver, and is even more useful if you’re

looking for something new – a video someone’s told you about, or a new TV program but you can’t remember what channel they said it was on – because it’ll look in places that you may not have thought of and won’t run out of patience while it does it! Web searches are efficient, as Search All uses Google (you can change this to another favourite search engine if you like) and it’ll also remember previous searches, ‘auto-completing’ searches you might do regularly.

Your VideoAnother great GPS-like tool for your Smart TV is Your Video. By analysing your viewing history

and then forging links with IMDB (the Internet Movie Database, a very comprehensive movie website service), Your Video retrieves information on other movies and TV shows and displays them in a new screen.

How does it do this? If your Smart TV is logged in to your network, Your Video will base its recommendations on your viewing history – so if you’ve spent the week working your way through the Star Wars boxset, you’ll get suggestions for more sci-fi.

More interestingly, if your friends are your life and you’re logged into Social TV, recommendations will be based on what your friends have suggested in their Facebook, Twitter and Google Talk ‘share’ posts, provided they own a similar Samsung Smart TV. Hope you share their taste! If, however, you’re logged off, the decision rests with Samsung and what they deem ‘local patterns of viewing’. If you like a recommendation and it’s available from Samsung’s partner content providers like BigPond Movies or, later, select national broadcasters, Your Video will then give you options to rent or purchase the video.

smart tv > ambassador

Like many of the suspects in his hit US show The Mentalist, there’s more to Simon Baker than meets the eye. From humble Tasmanian

beginnings to one of the biggest TV stars not just here but around the world, Baker isn’t just about Aussie good looks.

He’s a celebrated actor, getting his break on the Oscar-winning film LA Confidential. Before that, he worked at home in Australia on E Street, Home and Away, and Heartbreak High. He’s been in a bunch of other hit movies too, including The Devil Wears Prada alongside Anne Hathaway.

But it’s TV where he’s made his biggest impact, first with the thriller The Guardian and now the runaway smash The Mentalist, where his character Patrick Jane uses his gift for picking up subtle cues in body language to help him bring criminals to justice.

He’s a father, with three children – Stella, Claude and Harry – to his wife Rebecca Rigg, also an Australian actor (you might remember her as troubled teenager Gabe in A Country Practice). Baker’s family has a big influence on his work: his daughter Stella pushed him to take the role in The Devil Wears Prada so she and her friends could go and see a movie where he didn’t die for once.

He’s an advocate for social justice too, playing in Soccer Aid 2010 as part of the Rest of the World team which faced England. Even though Baker’s penalty shot was saved by the keeper, the Rest of the World went on to win the shootout

and take the cup from England for the first time. He’s always aware of the political ramifications of the work he takes on, even on projects that a first glance might look like pure fun, like George Romero’s zombie movie, Land of the Dead, with its underlying commentary of modern American life.

Combine these things with a string of award nominations (including a humble Aussie Logie back in 1993 for his work on E Street) and you get a modern Australian success story.

Of course, there are places in the world further from Hollywood than Launceston, but not many! After Tasmania, Baker lived in Ballina NSW, which no doubt gave him a taste of the beach life he later found with his own family in Malibu… though he still describes the surfing back home in Australia

as prettier and cleaner than it is in the US. And while he was working and living in the US he says he missed being able to get a good meat pie.

So he walks the red carpet with the industry’s top stars, gets nominated for top awards, is a major commodity for global television drama... yet at the end of the day he still manages to find time to watch Gossip Girl with his daughter once her homework is done.

All this makes Simon Baker the perfect ambassador for Samsung’s entire range of products, including Smart TVs – he’s equally about quality family time as he is about the latest in blockbuster entertainment.

“DLNA makes possible the connected home we’ve been promised for so long”

get togetherMeet entertainment karma – where digital goodness goes around, and comes around… to the TV.

Previously, only computers have enjoyed the kind of versatility and cross-functional capability that would bring together the various digital devices you use at home and

out and about – and even then there was a good chance you’d be up to your neck in cables, wires and flashing lights, but with the advent of the truly Smart TV, bringing all that entertainment and information together in the one place in the lounge room is now possible. Wirelessly, and without effort.

It’s all made possible by DLNA, or Digital Living Network Alliance, and means that compatible devices – such as netbooks, tablets, cameras, phones or PCs – can share photos, video and music without having to swap media between our devices, or for our gadgets be physically tied together. DLNA makes possible the connected home we’ve been promised for so long.

Because DLNA is a bit of a mouthful, though, most brands identify their DLNA devices by a friendlier term, and Samsung’s is AllShare*. Regardless of the name it goes by, as long as a device is DLNA-certified you should be able to transfer content to a Smart TV.

All you need to do is ensure that your Samsung TV is connected to your home network, and that the device you want to connect is ‘seen’ by your router. The Smart TV will ‘pair’ with the device, then one click on the ‘AllShare’ button at your TV’s Smart Hub* page is all it takes in future to connect to the device and browse the content that can be transferred. Provided you’ve tagged the files sensibly to begin with, AllShare will display the content it finds in logical lists up on the TV screen in an

let’s

easy-to-read visual format; in an alphabetical listing, for example, by song title.

Then you’re set. Whatever the brand of the device you’ve connected and whatever the files stored there, your Smart TV should be able to take a peek inside and pull across all the music, video and photos you want. As an example, the new Samsung Smart TVs are loaded with 52 ‘codecs’, or file translators, to ensure the widest and most comprehensive format compatibility and the company’s AllShare system works with other

The way you share files over AllShare* is completely up to you, and easy to do. You can decide to mark everything in a folder or category as shared, or just opt to select specific ones (sparing the dinner guests, say, from the hundreds of digital snaps of your beautiful child sitting immobile in her high chair, or keeping the explicit rap lyrics out of earshot of your babies).

The AllShare system will cope equally adeptly with standard or high-definition video, which are usually the biggest types of digital file you’ll encounter. While a 512kbps connection is the minimum

recommended for a smooth transmission to the Samsung Smart TV set, there’s no doubt that best result will be had at faster speeds.

If you’re new to data streaming, it may not be immediately obvious how AllShare will benefit you in the home. But it’s astonishing these days how much of our daily lives involve digital information, and once you start to think about it, all sorts of scenarios come to mind where the ability to send that information to that big, flat-screen TV in the lounge becomes very handy indeed.

THE DETAILS

People willingly wear 3D* glasses in public places such as the cinema, so it’s hard to understand the problem with wearing them in the

privacy of their own home where vanity takes a back seat to tracksuit pants and slippers every night of the week.

If high standards of style are essential to your domestic space, however, the latest 3D eyewear will be right at home, thanks to an infusion of design-conscious smart thinking from Samsung HQ. The SSG-3700CR sports an innovative ‘fit over’ design with flexible arms so they fit better, making them more comfortable to wear, especially for extended viewing sessions.

Importantly, the technology has improved too. Bluetooth transmission from the TV to the glasses marks a vast improvement over infrared in several respects, virtually eliminating ghosting of the 3D image and allowing the eyewear to be made lighter, more responsive and much quicker and easier to recharge.

Central to the 3D experience, these 3D glasses certainly provide breathtaking visuals, but don’t just take our word for it. With a Best of Innovations Award from the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show, they’ve also won the thumbs-up from expert technology designers, engineers and journalists.

Flexi fitGlasses feature flexible ‘arms’ to accommodate different head sizes and a nose pad, so it’s easy to get a great fit. The clever design also fits over most spectacles.

Design winnerWinner of a ‘Best of Innovations’ award at the world’s biggest technology expo, the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show, the glasses are more comfortable, weighing only 28 grams – nearly 25 percent lighter than most active shutter eyewear.

Power The battery recharges in only two hours, and lasts for up to 40, while an indicator on the side of the glasses displays battery life. A built-in acceleration sensor detects when the glasses are in use, automatically switching off to save power when they’re not needed.

Bluetooth benefitsThanks to Bluetooth, viewing distance can exceed 10 metres, there’s less flicker from infrared interference with other devices, and crosstalk, where the two images that make a 3D picture become visible as separate images, destroying the 3D effect, has been virtually eliminated.

Better viewingThe SSG-3700CR model provides a contrast ratio of 1200:1 (more than three times that of previous Samsung models) for brighter 3D viewing sessions. Plus, with a 180-degree viewing angle, you can sit wherever you like on the couch – front and centre, or far off to the left or right – and still see great 3D.

The first 3D film was created way back in 1890, but it wasn’t until the 1950s that it became popular, giving cinemas and the film industry a much needed shot in the arm in the battle against TV for audiences. More than 60 3D films were produced from 1952–55, with Hitchcock’s Dial M for Murder considered the best of the period.

It may not be immediately obvious, but many of today’s best 2D televisions are also 3D TVs. So just like apps, web browsing and the Smart Hub, 3D is another great feature of Samsung Smart TVs.

The best technologies are typically found in premium model televisions, and that’s where you’ll find 3D* capabilities. So it stands to reason that if you buy a 3D TV, you’re also getting the best ‘conventional’ TV that money can buy. This year, Samsung is expanding those models, and 3D functionality is making it into the TV line-ups earlier, so a lot more of the sets you see in stores will have 3D as standard, and that’s great news for you.

Gearing upTo make sure you can enjoy 3D properly, you’ll need a few things. First up, sorry to be obvious, is your 3D-capable TV. The TV should come with some kind of 3D eyewear: the more advanced models have been reconfigured and redesigned for more comfort, better performance

and quicker recharging. Now using Bluetooth technology, 3D images are smoother, with more clarity, and allow for extremely wide viewing angles, so sit where you want on the couch! Depending on the deal you do at the store, however, you may find it necessary to grab a few extra pairs. A brace of eyewear is standard with most premium sets, but if you’re packed to the rafters at home, Samsung has several additional eyewear options for you to consider. ‘Active shutter’ glasses are a good way to go, here, as only they can render 3D in full HD.

To get the most 3D content, beyond what is currently being broadcast over the airwaves it’s a good idea to get a 3D Blu-ray player, too. A standard Blu-ray player won’t cope with 3D, but this year has seen a huge increase in 3D-capable gear, including 3D Blu-ray playback from compact home theatre systems.

Turn on, turn offOf course, you can always turn the 3D effect off. But you won’t want to, we’re willing to bet, when you find out what the tech experts have been doing to improve the 3D viewing experience in the 2011 TVs.

Undergoing a comprehensive overhaul based on all the feedback that has come in from early adopters, the 3D technologies have been examined and upgraded, reducing or eliminating some of the less desirable effects of trying to make all the 3D jiggery-pokery happen.

One such effect is ‘crosstalk’, or the fading of one picture away as another comes in. This blurry crossover effect has now been minimised by using Bluetooth technology, instead of infrared, between Samsung 3D LED and plasma TVs and the 3D eyewear. Added benefits include reduced ficker from infrared interference with other devices, longer viewing distances and wider viewing angles, so you can sit anywhere on the couch – even wide off to the left and right – and still enjoy great 3D.

Another is the ‘layered image’ effect, where the blending of left and right images can make it feel like you’re seeing double. By tweaking the video processing algorithms and minimising the production of layered images, this effect is dramatically reduced, leaving you with a clear 3D picture.

What you need for 3D

Samsung’s ‘Total 3D’ delivers a far more immersive 3D experience to anyone picking up a 2011 premium Smart TV, 3D rhome theatre system or Blu-ray player, combining improved 3D generation technology, 2D to 3D Conversion and 3D sound.1. 2D TO 3D CONVERTER

Vision only half the equationNow, what about sound? Anyone with so much as a passing knowledge of home entertainment knows that a high-def picture is only half the story. Add surround sound to the mix and it can transform your enjoyment of pretty much any kind of entertainment – watching sport can feel like you’re among the crowd in the stadium or even on the field; action movies make you duck for cover amidst the gunfire and explosions, and music videos put you front and centre at the gig.

And that’s only in what is now called ‘2D’ surround sound, where the sound is projected out horizontally from your TV and speakers. You can guess what’s coming next. Generate a vertical wave of surround sound to complement the one coming straight at you and you’re totally immersed in audio, and that’s exactly what the latest home theatre packages can do, sending soundtracks ‘over the top’ as if you’ve installed speakers somewhere high up near your ceiling. With more depth of sound generated at the same time, this three-pronged approach creates a near-total 3D audio effect. Now that you know you need surround sound, look out for Samsung’s 3D Sound-capable home theatre systems.

Content with the content? With any new technology, and 3D is still reasonably new, success is often driven by the availability of good content. We’ve seen some broadcasters get off to a good, early start, with sporting events like last year’s State of Origin being shown in 3D, and that kind of thing is set to increase quite substantially, with 3D contributions from the AFL and NRL, plus dedicated programming from Foxtel.

Hollywood blockbusters are often released in 3D, and most will make the transition to 3D Blu-rau for home in 2011. Look out for Cars 2, Tangled, Sammy’s Adventures , Gnomeo and Juliet, Narnia, Gulliver’s Travels and Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom Of Doom in 3D, Tron: Legacy, Thor, the Green Hornet, Priest and Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides.

The big videogames publishers are also in on the 3D game, with titles such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, Killzone 3, Crysis 2, Gran Turismo Unchartered and Enslaved rendered in 3D.

The MIRACLE of the Age! A LION in your lap! A LOVER in your arms!” shouted the cinema poster for the 1952 Bwana Devil, the first 3D movie to show at cinemas. It wasn’t a hit with critics, but it raked in the moviegoers.

The movie that triggered new enthusiasm for 3D, at cinemas and at home, Avatar has made more than $US2 billion dollars worldwide in box office sales alone, which is enough to buy eight top-spec Airbus A380s. Globally, it’s estimated that 27 people have not yet seen the movie.

Looks weird, but this is how 3D broadcasts appear when viewed in 2D. With 3D eyewear on, the two images combine to give the impression of depth. The picture shows match one of the 2010 State of Origin Series.

Close encounters of the third kind

Watch TV or put a standard DVD or Blu-ray disc in a device with 2D to 3D Conversion and it will generate the extra dimension

smart tv > 3D

2D to 3D ConversionThen there’s ‘2D to 3D Conversion’, a great feature of many 3D* TVs that enables them to take standard two-dimensional content and convert it to 3D. What that means for you is that you can watch TV or put a standard DVD or Blu-ray disc in a device with 2D to 3D Conversion capability and it will generate the extra dimension. This 3D conversion magic can work on regular TV broadcasts, recordings from your PVR or USB hard drive, JPEG images from your USB drive, DivX movies, streaming media from cameras, camcorders and smartphones, as well as video games from your favourite console.

Naturally, movies and TV shows that are actually created in 3D are going to provide the most realistic 3D experience, but 2D to 3D Conversion vastly increases the potential library of 3D excitement that’s available to you, and is built into many of Samsung’s latest home theatre systems, TVs and Blu-ray players.

Making a 3D image in theory is easy. You simply show a human one image in their left eye and the same image from a slightly different angle in their right eye. The brain automatically combines both images and interpolates them in such a way to create a sensation of depth. So the trick is to get those two images into the correct eyes, when beaming light out of a single flat display, and Samsung TVs do this by controlling special ‘active shutter’ glasses that you wear, and sending left and right images at 50 frames per second alternately to each eye.

Image makersIf a TV can’t present a great image, then it’s not smart at all.

All this Smart TV technology is great, but let’s go back to basics for a minute: what is the most fundamental aspect of a television? It’s the picture, of course, and whether you’re

looking to buy an LED or plasma TV, the technology that goes towards producing excellent image quality is an extremely complex animal and forever advancing in the relentless pursuit of pixel perfection.

So what makes a good picture? The key attributes of a great image include resolution,

response time, colour accuracy, contrast and brightness and how well the pictorial information from the signal source is received, interpreted, relayed and controlled. That video processing is a hugely significant factor and is often the greatest determinant of the quality of the finished product.

Low contrast ratio levels are no longer a point of weakness in plasma or LED* televisions, with ‘millions-to-one’ ratings now common, but the ability to accurately control contrast is essential. Advancements in controlling how contrast is altered now means that the best TVs can now adjust contrast of the panel in separate blocks, rather than apply a blanket change to the entire screen at once. The result is a better colour range on screen, with darker blacks and more vibrant colours.

Remember that deep inky blacks are an important measure of picture quality, because without them it’s hard to make colours and whites stand out. The ability to produce true black also allows a TV to reproduce exceptional detail within dark scenes.

LED picturePopular thought is that LED televisions perform strongly in rooms with high ambient light, producing incredibly lifelike, bright and vivid pictures. As the focus of most of the recent innovations in display technology, they also typically provide the latest features, the slimmest form-factors and, in most cases, the best pictures too.

Until recently, the principal challenge for these TVs has been achieving true black. Formerly lit by ‘always-on’ fluorescent light tubes, they suffered from being overly bright with everything, as subtle adjustments to the way the panel was lit were impossible. The introduction of LEDs as a backlight system improved this, and now with edge-lit LEDs (where the lights are located around the perimeter of the screen, rather than behind it) blacks have never been better.

What’s more, these LED lights can be more easily and discreetly controlled. With the ability to be turned on and off with greater precision, the result is deep,

rich blacks and better overall colour accuracy. Samsung advances this with ‘Micro Dimming’, a technology that uses a renewed chipset and an enhanced algorithm for incredibly precise control of the lighting to take picture clarity to new heights.

Edge-lit LED lighting has done more than anything to boost performance, and similar advances in refresh rate, coupled with better video processing, have also tackled the problem of ‘motion blur’.

How quickly the pixels respond – measured as going from black to white to black again – and refresh rate (how often the whole image is replaced on the screen) can determine how well the panel handles

fast-moving images. Motion blur, which is evident as ‘light trails’ or blurring on the ball when watching something like tennis or footy, is common to LED TVs with slower refresh rates and response times.

With Smart LED televisions, refresh rates have soared, response rates been reduced

and, equally importantly, a more holistic approach to assessing and addressing the resolution of a moving image has been adopted. Samsung, again, has been pioneering in this respect, producing the ‘CMR’ (Clear Motion Rate) measurement that is the product of panel, lighting unit and chipset working together, where the higher the number, the sharper and crisper are the moving images.

Edge-lit LED lighting has done more than anything to boost performance

Audition tipsThe acid test of any television is your own eyes, so be sure to audition any TV before you buy. Be aware that most TVs are set to Dynamic or Vivid mode to appear bright under the store lights (and to compete with all the other Dynamic and Vivid TVs), so switch to Natural or Standard, which is more suited to the home. Initially the picture will look dull, but give your eyes time to adjust and then look for the following, making adjustments to the picture until you’re satisfied.

Natural skin tones indicate good colour reproduction.

Colours should be realistic, not oversaturated.

Look for detail in dark areas.

Examine fast actions scenes for blurring and smearing – there shouldn’t be any.

In conventional LED televisions, the smoothness of a moving image is typically reflected as a refresh rate. Measured in hertz (Hz) this indicates how frequently an image is presented to the screen each second, with 50, 100 and 200Hz being the most common refresh rates found in today’s sets. But just like a quality wine is the result of a combination of factors – grape, geography, winemaker, for example – so too is the quality of a moving image. So instead of measuring picture smoothness by refresh rate alone, Samsung’s Clear Motion Rate (CMR) takes into account the panel, chipset and backlight to provide a more accurate measure of picture smoothness. With CMR rates from 50 to 800, Samsung LED TVs deliver ultra smooth moving images.

Plasma picturePlasma technology is generally accepted as being more suited to a darker environment, with good colour accuracy and the ability to render total blacks making for clear and nicely detailed images. Additionally, an almost instantaneous pixel ‘response time’ minimises motion blur in fast-moving sequences like sports or action films, and a near-180 degree viewing angle makes viewer positioning irrelevant.

With plasma TVs, the issue of reflection from the outer glass layer can now be entirely removed – quite literally – by doing away with the clear glass filter in front of the panel, significantly reducing the

chances of glare and improving brightness. Enhancing this effect, the inclusion of ‘real black filter’ technology, which increases light levels emitted from the plasma cells while reducing the brightness lost through diffusion of that light, heightens contrast by producing deeper blacks and brighter whites. The result is that plasma is now a more than suitable choice for bright rooms.

Displaying any fast-moving vision on a huge screen is challenging for any TV technology. For plasma, given that response rate is not an issue, attention shifts to what is known as ‘subfield motion’ technology. A ‘subfied’ is where the same image is repeated

Samsung is out at the front of the field when it comes to technological innovation in LED TVs, so look out for the following terms to get the best tech going:One Design: Combination of the bezel and panel to remove the barrier between you and what you’re viewing – looks like it’s right there in the room with you!Clear Motion Rate: Most accurate measurement of how crisp images are under motion on LED TVsMicro Dimming: Precise control of LED lighting for great blacks and whitesHyper Real Engine: The video processing technology that renders the most vibrant and clear Full HD images on Samsung TVs Ultra Clear Panel: Panel that absorbs external light, reducing reflection and light diffusion for a brighter pictureWide Color Enhancer Plus: Super-advanced image algorithm magic for glorious colour Cinema Black: Switches off top and bottom lighting in letterbox mode for deeper blacks and improved energy efficiency

LED: Out in front

The new One Design on LED Smart TVs enables a bezel that is just 5mm thin - less than one-fifth the thickness of previous Samsung models.

in order to help eliminate ‘phosphor lag’, which is evident as a type of colour artefacting caused by the individual cells in the plasma grid switching on and off. In most plasma TVs, this is done eight times a frame, and this is the equivalent to a 400Hz subfield frequency. Samsung plasma TVs have a 600Hz subfield frequency, which ups this to 12 times a frame for broadcast TV and DVD sources, and 25 times for Blu-ray. The benefit of updating the fields more frequently is realised in smoother images and the virtual elimination of motion judder.

Looks pretty, is prettyDesign has an important part to play in delivering the very best viewing experience, and, with major international design awards from CES, EISA, IF, and IDEA since 2006, Samsung has considerable cred in this area. And in this year alone, Samsung as already received 37 innovation awards, all from the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show.

The ‘One Design’ concept in the Samsung LED range merges panel and bezel to create a near-borderless viewing experience, making the picture appear to merge with its surroundings. The bezel is just 5mm thin, or less than a fifth the width of those on conventional televisions. It’s a barely-there bezel!

The Samsung ‘Plasma+1’ concept means that every plasma TV in the range has had the display area increased by one inch – last year’s 63 inch panel becomes 64 inch, for instance, but the physical dimensions of the panel is the same. To boot, the width of some plasma models is up to 50 percent slimmer than last year’s!

Samsung’s LED and plasma televisions are now also home to a suite of energy efficiency measures, including sensors that work to reduce your power consumption by automatically altering the brightness level of the image depending on the intensity of light in the room

Fancy on the insideAs you can see, producing an excellent picture is a complex endeavour and not easily achieved. The video processing expertise that goes into making a great TV is a specialised and highly skilled enterprise that really sorts the men out from the boys. But you can appreciate that, as with most things in life, the best technology is generally the technology worth having.

Samsung uses special terms to describe the benefits of its cutting-edge plasma tech:Plasma+1: A thinner bezel, a slimmer frame and an extra inch of viewable picture and a more immersive experience600Hz Subfield Motion: A single image is presented to the screen 12 times a frame, for smoother imagesMotion Judder Controller: Reduces blurriness by inserting additional frames into a moving image Real Black Filter: Reduces reflections at the screen to improve contrast during bright viewing roomsHyper Real Engine: The video processing technology that renders the most vibrant and clear Full HD imagesClear Image Panel: Increases viewing angle and improves crispness of picture Wide Color Enhancer: Image algorithm trickery that reveals every colour in its full glory

Plasma: Scenic wonder

Without changing the size of the TV, Samsung has squeezed more viewable screen area from its 2011 Plasma +1 models, which are available in 51, 59 and 64 inch sizes. And depending on model, Samsung’s plasmas are between 20-50 percent slimmer than last year’s models.

Built-in WiFi, on every LED from the 6600 up, means you don’t need to use a WiFi dongle, so it frees up one of the television’s USB ports for other things. And from the 6000 LED TV model up, Samsung provides a third USB point anyhow. That can come in really handy if you want to use the excellent ‘PVR’ function on the TV to record your favourite programs to a USB hard drive, or if you need to connect a digital camera or media player.

A stellar example of what the convergence trend brings to your home entertainment rack, the BD-D8900 fuses convenient time-shifting features with a top-notch Blu-ray player, 3D Blu-ray playback and 2D to 3D Conversion for 3D TV owners, web content from the Samsung Apps store, as well as media streaming via AllShare for getting all the photos, music and video from your DLNA gadgets to play up on the big screen and through the ‘good’ speakers for everyone to enjoy. In 1976, the VCR made it possible to watch pre-recorded movies on videotape and in surround sound at home for the first time. With more than 900 million machines sold over 30 years, it kick-started the home entertainment phenomenon that has since given us DVD, Blu-ray, plasma and LED TVs.

Recording Massive 1 terabyte hard drive for up to 120 hours of HD recording, plus twin television tuners, so you can watch a show on one channel while recording another.

complete meyouIf you’ve only got HD video, you’re missing half the picture.

A guy who knows a thing or two about such things once said that “sound is 50 percent of the motion picture experience”. That guy was George Lucas, creator of Star Wars (the first

film to feature Dolby surround sound), its sequels and prequels, plus sundry other modern movie classics, and his message is clear: a good picture needs to be mated with good sound.

If you want to truly experience movies the way the director intended, you need to invest in a decent surround sound system. Just how ‘decent’ is going to depend on a lot of factors, not least on how much you have to spend. It’s also a matter of what equipment you already have, what you want to do with the system and how good you expect it all to sound in the end.

Satellite speakers, Smart Hub and AllShare access via built-in WiFi, plus 1000 watts of power output make the HT D530 an ideal 3D surround system for compact spaces.

smart tv >

The bare necessitiesBut you need to cover off the basics first, and that would be ensuring you have a system that can handle both stereo and surround sound; most home theatre packages will. We recommend a minimum of a 5.1-channel setup, meaning you’ll have six speakers (two front, one centre, two rear and a subwoofer) to arrange around the room, and a couple of HDMI inputs around the back of the player component, so you can connect other devices at the highest quality.

The amount of power your system will need depends very much upon the size of your room, and your listening tastes. If your room is large and you are sitting some way from the loudspeakers, then your system will probably need a higher power output in order to deliver satisfying levels of sound.

An 800 watt system, for instance, should suit most living rooms, providing plenty of power for everyday use while still having the capacity to keep the neighbours awake all night when the mood takes you.

Try and get wireless, or wireless-ready, rear speakers, which are a neater solution for family homes and less likely to trip you up when you’re carrying a tray of drinks and chips over to the sofa.

Entertainment central SWA-5000

Don’t want to run cables under the rug to your rear speakers – add the SWA-5000 wireless transmitter and remove the tripping hazards from your living room. Equipped with dual-band 2.4/5.8 GHz wireless technology, it even automatically switches frequencies if it encounters any interference, ensuring optimum performance and reliability. BD-D8500

Combing 3D Blu-ray playback and HD TV recording in the one chassis, Samsung’s BD-D8500 reduces the number of boxes you need to hook up to the TV and provides all the neat PVR functions you can’t live without – twin tuners, pause and rewind live TV and 500GB capacity for storing up to 60 hours HD programming. Plus there’s 2D-3D Conversion and built-in WiFi for sharing the Smart Hub and AllShare love.

The vTuner app on Smart Hub-enabled Blu-ray players and home theatre systems lets you tune into thousands of internet radio stations, search for and set favourites by genre or location, or just enjoy the recommendations vTuner makes based on where you live.

Format compatibility is probably the most important aspect, for purely practical reasons. You need to get this right if your system is going to be able to handle everything you throw at it, so look for the widest possible compatibility with file formats like BD, DVD, CD, MPEG, DivX, WMA and AAC in the player, and that the system itself has Ethernet and/ or WiFi, DLNA and home-network sharing capability.

Sound-wise, you want high definition audio support too, including at least one of DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby TrueHD or Dolby Pro Logic IIz formats.

If 3D is part of your plan, then ensure the system can handle 3D video and 3D Sound with 2D to 3D conversion. For greatest convenience, you’ll want to make sure you can plug in USB or other external hard drives and perhaps your mobile device, such as an iPod.

Lastly, if your home is anything like ours, check for a headphone socket too, in case the kids discover how good your new home theatre system is!

Don’t throw out the baby…If you’re still happy with your non-smart flat screen TV but are excited about the possibilities we’ve been discussing in this book, you can make your regular TV smart by hooking it up to a Smart-enabled Blu-ray system. It will convert 2D content to

A great way to update your existing system and try out all the smart features

With 3D Blu-ray, 2D to 3D Conversion, AllShare networking and Smart Hub access via built-in WiFi, the 7.1 channel HT-D6750 is packed with 1300 watts of audio muscle.

3D, as explained on pages 36-39, immerse you in 3D audio and, as with the TV line-ups, ‘smart’ capabilities will feature in far more models in the range, so you can buy into all this cleverness much cheaper than ever before. It’s a great way to update your existing system and try out all the ‘smart’ features before deciding on the full Big Kahuna Smart TV, or to bring some smarts to the TV in the secondary viewing area, be that the master bedroom, kids’ rumpus or man-cave.

A good smart home theatre system can also have features that make even setup easier. For example, HDMI 1.4 allows for ARC, or Audio Return Channel. ARC brings the sound from your TV back to your home theatre system without having to run an additional optical cable, cutting down on clutter. Simply using an HDMI lead with each one of your other devices keeps the spaghetti at the back of the TV cabinet down, given their ability to process both sound and vision in HD in the one cable.

Many home theatre systems also provide a useful automatic setup and calibration feature which adjusts sound levels from each speaker to compensate for their placement

around the room, ensuring that all sound hits the listening position on the couch at the same time and same volume, regardless of how far away they are.

For the recordIf you decide that a PVR is right for you, there’s a minimum spec we’d recommend. Ensure the hard drive is at least 250GB – this is critical if you’re going to record programs in HD – and it’s icing on the cake if the unit allows you to swap out the hard disk for a larger capacity one, just be sure to check how that affects the warranty.

Twin HD TV tuners is a must: if you watch the big commercial TV stations on free-to-air, you’ll be used to seeing them start or end later than advertised, and twin tuners allows for ‘overlapping’ recordings, so you’ll never miss the dramatic end of a season finale again.

The newest PVRs are much more than simple recording devices though, and may also have built-in Smart TV functions, 2D to 3D Conversion and sharing features of their home theatre and TV brethren.

* For Smart Hub, AllShare, 3D and PVR disclaimers, see page 2.

Some people take a bit of convincing to suddenly host a whole new truckload of home entertainment gear in their living room, so they’ll be glad to know that Samsung has spent as much time on design as technology, producing equipment that wouldn’t look out of place in the most stylish home:

Many Samsung home theatre systems and Blu-ray players provide access to select Smart Hub features, including Your Video, Search All, AllShare and the Samsung Apps store. You’ll find apps that let you check in on Facebook, Twitter, Picasa, YouTube, Nine MSN and the NRL Game Analyser.

Bringing all your home entertainment equipment home for the first time can be a daunting prospect. It’ll take a little time for the family to adjust to having this raging beast of a system in the house

and your first priority should be to make sure you’re providing a comfortable space for it to live in. Here are some basic pointers for creating the optimum environment for your home entertainment system.

Let’s start with the TV. Conventional thought is that the centre of the screen should be at roughly eye height – that’s eye height when you’re sitting on your chosen rear-end receptacle. The reason for this is really just so you’re not straining to look up as you watch the TV, so the very best way to determine the correct height is to sit on the couch and decide what’s comfortable for you.

An existing TV cabinet might make the choice for you, but if you’re planning to wall mount the TV, Samsung’s ultra slim wall mount will fix it super-close to the wall, so it hangs just like a picture.

Speakers of the houseTo position the speakers, follow the standard layout if possible: centre speaker directly above or beneath the TV screen, front two to either side of the TV and angled slightly towards the seating position, rear two at either end of your seating area or just behind, preferably elevated to ear level, and subwoofer on the floor, but ideally not in a corner (which makes for boomy, over-loud bass).

Your room layout and dimensions may affect this, of course, as will the speakers in the pack. ‘Tallboy’ speakers are already tall, so don’t need separate stands, but if you choose a system with all satellites, optional speaker stands for the rear two will be available.

To help you in this, many home theatre systems come with an automatic speaker-calibration function that will adjust all relevant signals to obtain maximum possible performance from the speakers wherever you’ve decided to place them.

Entertaining spaces There’s an art – or perhaps even science – to creating a home for your new entertainment system.

Making connectionsTo connect all your devices together, HDMI is the go: these are one-cable solutions that will carry hi-def audio and video at the same time at the highest available quality, and well worth the investment.

Entertaining spaces

With HDMI connections, Samsung’s BD Wise feature can also do its work, ensuring that all your video and audio – regardless of format – is transferred at its optimium between equipment.

And finally, if you’ve bought a Smart TV, establishing or upgrading to a wireless network will make cross-device communication effortless.

There’s a complete home theatre system in Samsung’s 2011 range to suit everyone, whether you’re just discovering the joys of surround sound or are looking to upgrade to the best.

Less Layered Image Layered image occurs when the left and right images of a 3D picture blend together making it difficult to interpret. For a smoother and more immersive 3D experience, Samsung Smart TV’s superior 3D technology uses special algorithms to minimise the amount of layered images. So by decreasing decay time, the result is clear 3D images that make your 3D home entertainment experience a more enjoyable one.

Full HD 1080P Experience the natural beauty of reality with Samsung’s Full HD TVs. With twice the resolution of standard HD TVs, the Full HD TVs deliver images that will bring pleasure to your home entertainment experience. The rich, realistic texture of Full HD images invites you to enjoy a viewing experience that redefines reality.

Micro Dimming Samsung’s Micro Dimming technology achieves new heights through its renewed chipset and enhanced algorithm. With Micro Dimming, your LED TV will produce deeper blacks and purer whites, and exhibit less judder and halo artefacting for improved clarity and contrast.

Clear Motion Rate Experience the true meaning of motion clarity with Samsung’s Clear Motion Rate. Unlike the “refresh rate” which explains a part of picture quality, Clear Motion Rate determines the motion of an image by using three factors: chipset, TV panel, and backlight. The chipset, which is the brains of behind the operation, controls the panel and backlight technology to produce the clearest motion graphics.

HyperReal Engine The driving force behind the amazing colour and realistic images of Samsung’s new TVs is the innovative HyperReal Engine. By optimising performance and image enhancement, the Samsung HyperReal Engine provides vibrant and crystal-clear Full HD images.

One Design From the moment you set your eyes on the Samsung LED TV, you’ll be amazed by Samsung’s new One Design. One Design was developed to maximise the viewing experience as well as enhance any home interior. Unlike conventional TVs, where the panel is recessed slightly within a thick plastic frame, the Samsung LED TV’s One Design elegantly combines the bezel with the panel to create a seamless viewing experience that breaks the barrier between reality and what’s on TV.

Clear Image Panel The new Samsung Plasma+1 TV line up uses a new filter and panel structure to eliminate layered images and produce clear images from almost every angle. This also eliminates the production of dual images and any form of blurring typically found with glass filters.

Real Black Filter For greater image contrast, the Real Black Filter will open your eyes to a new dimension of viewing. By suppressing the amount of external light that is reflected, the filter improves image contrast when viewing in bright conditions. So with minimal reflection, images are clean, crisp and distraction-free.

Wide Colour Enhancer By using an advanced picture quality algorithm, the Wide Colour Enhancer can improve the quality of a Samsung plasma TV image and even uncover hidden colours and details.

Motion Judder Canceller With the Motion Judder Canceller, the Samsung plasma virtually eliminates judder and blurring in film sources. This is achieved by estimating the position of the moving object and inserting additional frames intelligently.

600Hz Subfield Motion By using the latest in subfield motion technology, the new Samsung Plasma+1 TV is able to flash a single image up to 25 times a second. That results in smoother images and improved picture quality, no matter how fast the images are moving.

Ultra Clear Panel The Ultra Clear Panel on Samsung LED TV efficiently absorbs external light and effectively eliminates diffusion, providing you with real, natural colour and deep, dynamic detail that delivers a clearer, more comfortable viewing experience.

Wide Colour Enhancer Plus A superior colour enhancer, the Wide Colour Enhancer Plus technology in Samsung LED TVs uses an advanced picture quality improvement algorithm that can drastically increase the colour spectrum to provide more colours and detail. So see colours as they were meant to be seen with the help of Samsung’s Wide Colour Enhancer Plus technology

Cinema Black Watch your favourite movies like you would in the theatre with Samsung’s Cinema Black technology. Cinema Black automatically controls the letterbox lighting by turning off the lights at the top and bottom for a more immersive viewing experience. With Cinema Black, you’ll enjoy the benefits of sharp contrast and crisp picture quality.

Plasma+1 With Samsung’s Plasma+1 Design, you’ll benefit from an extra inch in screen size because of the thinner bezel. A thick bezel can be distracting and affect your viewing experience. The Plasma+1 Design brings back the joy of watching television and provides you with a larger screen so your home entertainment experience is the best it can be.

Ultra Slim Just when you thought TVs couldn‘t get any slimmer, the Samsung Ultra Slim TV changes the playing field. By taking advantage of the latest innovations in plasma technology, Samsung was able to create the world’s slimmest plasma TV. Incredibly, some of the new ultra slim models are 50% thinner than last year, creating an unbelievably slim profile you need to see to believe.

Eco Sensor The Eco Sensor measures the intensity of the light in the room and then automatically calibrates the brightness of the image on the TV. Under bright situations, the sensor will increase the brightness of an image while the sensor will reduce the brightness under darker situations. That means the Eco Sensor controls the amount of light used to create its images, making it more energy efficient.

Energy Efficiency The new Samsung TV lineup fulfills the energy limit of the EU Ecolabel criteria for 2011. The new TVs also set improvements for eco efficiency when it comes to power consumption. Continuing our commitment to eco-innovation, the new LED TV uses less power than is needed to meet the EU Ecolabel energy efficiency requirements when running in Standard Mode and depending on series and screen size.

Wireless LAN Built-in With Wireless LAN built-in, you can further streamline your device’s connectivity capabilities without adding more external devices, like Ethernet lines or USB dongles, while maintaining its attractive design. And to further boost the device’s connectivity reach, the convenient “One Foot Connection” feature can wirelessly detect compatible devices that are placed within one foot of the device and its wireless router.

ConnectShare Movie With more than 52 codecs supported, the ConnectShare Movie feature transforms your TV into an entertainment centre. Simply plug in your USB stick or HDD into the TV to enjoy a wide range of movies, photos and music on the big screen in the living room, rather than the PC in the study.

Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) Samsung’s Anynet+ technology has been at the cornerstone for all its Full HD TVs. The new plasma and LED/LCD TVs are no different. With Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC), you can control all of your HDMI-CEC compatible digital AV devices with a single remote control. No matter who the manufacturer, Anynet+ will simplify your home entertainment experience.

HDMI x 4 With four High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) inputs, Samsung LED and plasma TVs will transform your living room into a multimedia entertainment center. HDMI provides high-speed transmission of high definition digital data from multiple devices straight into your TV. That means you can enjoy a wide variety of content on the big screen.

Crystal Amplifier PlusSamsung’s proprietary digital amplifier technology, Crystal Amplifier Plus delivers HD quality sound to your 3D experience. This innovative technology was designed to filter sound sources twice to minimise distortion and produce crystal-clear sound, so that everything you hear sounds the way it was meant to be heard.

Super TweeterUnlike conventional digital Home Theatre Systems, the widebandwidth amplifier and built-in Super Tweeter on the Samsung Home Entertainment System delivers outstanding detail and clarity in high frequencies without any harshness. Designed specifically for the Samsung Home Entertainment System, the combination of the amplifier and Super Tweeter produces high-quality sound at 50kHz.

Passive Radiator SubwooferThe 6.5-inch woofer includes a 10-inch passive radiator on the back of it to strengthen low-frequency sounds, while simultaneously making them clearer with wider reverberation. The passive radiator also improves the clarity of low pitch sounds and reduces port noise.

2 HDMI input/HDMI Audio Return ChannelWith conventional Home Theatre Systems, you need to connect a separate optical cable to your receiver to listen to the audio from your TV. The HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel) allows you to easily connect your compatible devices to process the TV’s audio signal without an optical cable. And with two HDMI inputs, you can keep your AV devices connected all the time for a convenient way to experience a new level in sound.

Cradle for iPod/iPhoneConnecting your iPod and iPhone to your Home Theatre System has never been easier. Buyers guide: LED TV

As one of the most innovative TV technologies in the past few years, LED televisions integrate advanced feature sets with cutting-edge design. Employing precisely-controlled Edge LED lighting to produce the brightest, clearest and sharpest

images possible, LED is also among the most energy efficient TVs on the market. LED lighting makes for better blacks and whites, so look for technology that allows for micro dimming along with panel design innovations to reduce reflection and glare. Fast-moving image handling is also critical, so look for TV sets that clearly state how they handle motion and any technologies that help create the smoothest picture.

And don’t forget 3D. Now available in a much larger proportion of TVs, the best LED sets can not only handle 3D but convert regular 2D images from any source – games, TV, DVD – to 3D. Improvements in the video processing of 3D images make for increased contrast, colour and transmission, with better 3D eyewear technology to match.

Samsung LED TVs are at the top of the technology pile again in 2011 and promise to transform the way you watch TV. A new design ethos, ‘One Design’ merges panel and bezel as if they’re one, bringing incredibly detailed pictures right into the living room and completely enveloping viewers in what’s on the screen. Improved 3D technology and 2D to 3D conversion offer a more immersive 3D experience than ever, and larger screen sizes, with four models over an eye-stretching 60 inches, make you feel like you’re right there in the midst of the action. Check out Samsung’s new CMR (Clear Motion Rate) measure to easily judge how well the TV handles fast motion.

Much more than just TV, though, the 2011 Samsung LED Smart TVs provide a whole new way for the entire family to enjoy the entertainment together. Via the Smart Hub, the LED TV connects with every device on your home network using AllShare and built-in Wi-Fi to bring your digital music, movies and photos right to you.

Look for technology that allows for micro dimming along with panel design innovations to reduce reflection and glare

Buyers guide: plasma TV

The technologies you need to look out for when considering a plasma TV set go towards producing the perfect synthesis of performance and design. Plasma is a great choice for a big screen, especially if movie nights are a regular fixture in

your household. Few things produce a stunning, big-screen experience in your home as easily as plasma, with a host of technologies combining to create fantastic colour accuracy, sharp detail in the darkest scenes and the most fluid motion, regardless of how fast the images are moving.

New government standards for energy efficiency have given impetus to plasma TV technology to become more efficient – look for filters that increase light levels and reduce reflections, plus new algorithms that automatically adjust and maximise contrast levels. Clever 600Hz subfield motion and motion judder-reduction features also help deliver fluid fast action.

Design is also important: now lighter and thinner than ever, Samsung plamsa TVs use fewer materials in construction and are built with energy efficiency features to help reduce power consumption.

Right at the forefront of these advancements, Samsung 2011 plasma TVs benefit from increased screen sizes, thanks to the new ‘Plasma+1’ design, that boosts the viewable screen area by an inch without affecting the overall external dimensions of the TV.

Smart TV functionality, including full web browsing, video conferencing and on-demand digital content services, also feature in Samsung plasma TVs, and all models but one feature 3D, so you can enjoy images in the third dimension at an entry-level price. What’s more, improved phosphor decay times and Bluetooth technology allow the 3D glasses to reset less frequently for flicker-free viewing, so you can completely immerse yourself in the majestic 3D images.

Plasma+1 design boosts the viewable screen area by an inch, without affecting the overall external dimensions of the TV

Buyers guide: LCD TV

A fantastic choice for a second screen in your kitchen, bedroom or study, an LCD TV is usually available in much smaller sizes than its LED and plasma counterparts and can play host to the music, photos and movies

you capture and store on other every day electronica. While the technology attributes of LCD screens often don’t include the 3D and internet connectivity of larger LED and plasma TVs, they’re great for people who want an excellent picture with all the essential features. All LCD televisions are high definition capable, with the majority of models falling in the ‘720p’ range and only the premium sets presenting with full HD 1080p.

Look for USB inputs – the more the better – so you can connect a digital camera, camcorder, portable music player or thumb drive, as well as HDMI inputs, for that convenient ‘one-cable’ solution for a

DVD player, high definition Blu-ray player or home theatre system. HDMI makes LCD televisions ideal for video games consoles, too, so pick up one in a smaller screen size for the kids’ bedroom, rumpus or other secondary viewing area.

The simple, clean lines of the Samsung LCD TVs make them look great in any environment, sharing a ‘Crystal Design’ point of difference with hints of colour infused into the bezels. Samsung appreciates that you’ll be considering LCD screens for all sorts of uses, so screen sizes start from a neat 19 inch model – perfect for the caravan – and is making available six models all at 40 inches and below, to suit every need.

If you want full HD, look towards Samsung’s D550 series of LCD televisions. They also have the maximum four HDMI inputs, and will play still photos and movies from a USB or other external hard drive.

Buyers guide: home entertainment

B uy the right home entertainment equipment and it can transform the way you enjoy TV. Immersing you in utterly realistic surround sound, opening up exciting new content via Blu-ray, DVD, video on demand and music, improving

both the audio and visual quality of the stuff you enjoy and, now, in the most literal terms, bringing a whole new dimension to your TV viewing, adding 3D capabilities that will leave you awestruck.

When considering the latest home entertainment devices, look for 3D functionality in Blu-ray players, PVRs and home theatre systems to complement your 3D TV, as well as technology that optimises the quality of the picture before it reaches your screen. Sound quality is paramount, naturally, and the best home entertainment makers are always striving to incorporate features that maximise high-fidelity audio reproduction.

Don’t forget one of the most critical considerations when buying a home entertainment device to go with your new TV: connectivity. This includes ‘Smart’ functions to upgrade a conventional TV, HDMI to link up other devices, compatibility with all the popular sound and

image formats, iPod/ iPhone-friendly features, DLNA and the ability to connect to WiFi and a home network.

Samsung’s 2011 home entertainment devices have embraced 3D as never before – and not just 3D images, but 3D sound too. Samsung ‘3D Sound Plus’ brings 3D audio to your ears in the vertical, as well as horizontal, plane, completely immersing you in movie soundtracks. Samsung Smart Blu-ray players and home entertainment systems house HyperReal Engine technology, to produce clear, vibrant images; are capable of 1080p video up-conversion, and use Crystal Amplifier Plus, Super Tweeter and Passive Radiator technology to produce pristine sound.

In an increasingly eco-aware world, it’s good to know that your TV is keeping pace.

T elevisions now feature an energy rating label that allows you to compare their energy efficiency to similar products.

There two things you need to be looking at when presented with the Energy Star rating label on a television: firstly, you have the star rating. Measured out of six possible stars, the more stars covered by the red ‘meter’ graphic, the more energy efficient the TV is. If one 50 inch LCD panel registers two stars, and the one next to it registers four stars, then you know instantly that the four-star TV uses less power. But you don’t know how much, exactly, or what it’ll cost you to run, which is where the second piece of information on the label comes in.

An absolute electricity usage number, the ‘Energy Consumption’ figure tells you how many kilowatts (kW) of power the TV will use per year. It’s based on 10 hours’ viewing at standard TV settings, for consistency purposes. There’s also

an extra ‘Super Efficiency Rating’, consisting of four more stars above the original set, like some kind of halo of goodness, for products that exceed the six-star level: again, the more of those that are filled, the more efficient the TV is.

The stars are relative to the TV’s screen size, the energy consumption number is not. Clearly, you can’t fairly compare the star rating of a 32 inch LCD TV with a 60 inch plasma, as a smaller screen will use less power than a larger one; it has to be ‘like for like’. But if you want to know how much a TV will cost you to run each year, check your last electricity bill to find the cost of each kW/h – ours is 17.61 cents – and then multiply that by the Energy Consumption number on the label.

Many Samsung TVs have an automatic sensor that measures light intensity in the room and calibrates the screen to suit. The brighter the room, the higher the light levels produced, so watch TV in a dim room for maximum efficiency.

When it comes to energy labels, the more stars the better and the lower the number the better. Work out the rough annual running cost of your TV by multiplying the number by your kWh rate. Each kWh equals about kilo of CO2 emissions.
