(g) I have been unable to find this poem in any of the volumes of Lope's works that I have consulted. It may, none the less, be authentic; cf. the lovers' alphabets in the first act of Peribáñez y el comendador de Ocaña. Authorship:

is a parody a lo divino of one which appeared in the Cancionero llamado Flor de Enamorados of Barcelona, 1562:

En los tus amores carillo no fies cata que no llores lo que agora ries.

(Ed. A. Rodríguez-Moñino and Daniel Devoto, Valencia, 1954, fo. I25v.) It had previously been adapted a lo divino by Francisco de Velasco in his Cancionero de coplas al nacimiento de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, Burgos, 1604. (Böhl de Faber, 11, 388, R.C.S. 444, Gallardo, 4240.)

(d) The refrain is traditional. Garci Sánchez de Badajoz had popularized it in a slightly different form in the Cancionero general of 15 11, no. 660. For other examples, a lo divino as well as secular, see Mr B. W. Wardropper's note in his edition of the anonymous Cancionero espiritual of Vallodolid, 1549 (Valencia, 1954, p. xxx).

A manucript version of the Pepys poem is contained in Pepys's no. 2591 - see Gaselee, pp. 10-12.

This poem is perhaps derived from a poem first printed in Juan de Chen's Laberinto amoroso , Barcelona, 1618 (ed. J. M. Blecua, Valencia, 1953, p. 84):

Mirando estaba el retrato del Rey Felipe tercero donde armado le pintaron vn pobre soldado viejo.

It was reprinted in the Primavera y flor de los meiores romances of Pedro Arias Pérez, in the edition printed at Lisbon in 1626. (See José F. Montesinos's edition of Valencia, 1954, p. 207 and Durán, 1739.) This poem is a satirical parody of the Romance del villano sayagués , reprinted in Gallardo (see note to 17/49 (G)) and imitated a lo divino in 17/49 (g) and 13/9 (e). Printer:

This chap-book has a date but no imprint. The centre block of King Charles II of Spain does not occur elsewhere in Pepys's chap-books. The castle is depicted twice in Cabeças's productions: in 58/181 n.d. and 51/98 of 1678 ; Vejarano used it twice in 1682 in 22/55 and 30/69. The block of the man with a hat in his hand occurs in Cabeças's 52/71 n.d. and in Vejarano's 37/80 and 13/60, both undated. Vejarano seems to have taken over Cabeças's blocks in 168 1. We cannot be certain which printer produced this chap-book because Cabeças's 3/177 and Vejarano's 31/61, 56/22 and 67/96 are also of that year.

Some editions of 18/164 are attributed to Mateo de Brizuelo, others to Mateo Sánchez de la Cruz; the former was a native of Dueñas, the latter of Segovia. 56/22 is attributed to Mateo Brizuela and 68/21 to Mateo Sánchez de Briçuela, native of Dueñas. Below will be found later editions of the Renegada , in which the second part is attributed to Mateo or Marcos [Sánchez de] Brizuela and the first part to Mateo Sánchez de la Cruz. The fact that both men shared a Christian name and possibly a first surname perhaps confused some printers, but there is a possibility

that, despite the difference in their places of origin, the two supposedly different authors were really one and the same.

Mateo de Brizuela is also given as the author of other works: Caso terrible y espantoso de dos hijos incorregibles que sin temor de Dios han muerto a su padre . . . , Joan Agustín Cauallero, y Sansón Arbus, Barcelona, 1574 (Rosenthal, 3). La vida de la Galera , Sebastián de Cormellas, Barcelona, 1603 (B.M.: C. 63. g. 21 (1)). The Comedia:

The play La renegada de Valladolid is not the source of the chap-book but a dramatization of it. It is usually attributed to Luis de Belmonte Bermudez, but it is probably by Belmonte, Moreto and Martínez de Meneses. (See Eduardo Julia Martínez, ťLa renegada de Valladolid', Boletín de la Real Academia Española, xvi, 1929, pp. 672-9.) The heroine's name is Isabel de Acevedo (Agueda was perhaps too commonplace). During the third act Naranjo, the gracioso, sings a quintilla beginning 'En Valladolid vivía' off-stage. At the opening of the act he had said:

Unas coplas de su historia (i.e. de la Renegada) compuse, y he de tratar, para poderlas cantar, de tomarlas de memoria: y si me da buena maña, y voy imprimiendo pliegos, he de comer con los ciegos cuando Dios me lleve a España. (B.A.E. t. xlv, 3610.)

The play was printed in the Primera parte de comedias escogidas de los meiores de España of 1652. Belmonte died in 1650. The quintilla in the play differs slightly from that in Pepys's chap-book; it resembles more closely that of two later versions (nos. 2 and 3 below). Later versions:

Source and author: Diego de San Pedro, the author of the Cárcel de amor (first printed 1492), also

wrote a poem called La passion trobada at the request of a devout nun. According to Don Antonio Pérez Gómez ('La pasión trobada de Diego de San Pedro', Revista de Literatura , 1, 1952, pp. 163-82) sixteen editions of this poem were published at intervals for popular sale, the earliest being of c. 1496 and the latest of Madrid 1866. A corrupt, incomplete version, attributed to Juan de Padilla, was printed in the R.C.S. no. 909. The first edition was reproduced photographically by Señor Pérez Gómez in the article mentioned above. The Passion trobada is not the Pepys poem. Gaselee wrongly assumed that the two poems on the Passion were identical; Palau and other bibliographers have followed him.

The Pepys poem is in fact an abbreviated version of another fifteenth-century Passion-meditation, which probably antedates San Pedro's. The Trobas de ta gloriosa Pasion of the Comendador Román were printed at Toledo c. 1484-6. About six years later Román added to this work another poem on the Resurrection and published the Coplas de la Pasion con la Resurrección at Toledo. The late Sir Henry Thomas published the Coplas in facsimile, with a learned introduction, in 1936. More recently A.P.G. has also reprinted them (Valencia, 1955). The poem, attributed to San Pedro in the Pepys chap-book, is in fact a selection of 41 stanzas from Román's Coplas, which number 214. Román is therefore the author of the Pepys poem. I quote parallel texts of three stanzas :

Laus Deo. This pliego measures 13*5 x 18*5 cm. It has four leaves signed A, A 2, В, В 2. The

pages have been wrongly imposed, and the correct order of the text is : (i) A i r-A iv - В 2Г-В 2V. (ii) A2V. (iii) Bir-Biv- A2r-A2v. (iv) В 2V. The catch-words, however, follow the order of the pages as though the pliego

had been correctly set up. It will be observed that the Villancico does not occur in the Pepys pliego and the

poem to San Raimundo has been replaced by another composition. The early text has also certain passages which were omitted from the Pepys text, e.g. :

The earliest edition traced is attributed to Francisco de Medina; the Pepys chap- book is attributed to Benito Carrasco del Mármol, and a later one to Gregorio Carrasco. Benito Carrasco is also the reputed author of a chap-book account of a miracle wrought by the Franciscan friar St James, another on the virtues of the Rosary and a curious, interesting poem on student life. (See Duran, p. lxx, Escudero, 889 and B.M.: 11450. e. 25 (10).)

In the early edition and in most of the later ones the scene of the story is set in Valladolid, not in Cuenca. At a fairly late date the narrative was rewritten, and the hero's name changed from Juan Prados to Gil Pardo. Sources:

The wife's trick on the husband resembles an episode of the Tres maridos burlados in Tirso de Molina's Cigarrales de Toledo (licensed in 1621). In fact it probably derives from Tirso's source, the verse novella of Francesco Bello (or Cieco da Ferrara) which forms the main body of the 25 th canto of his Mambriano (Ferrara, 1509). This was reprinted as a verse chap-book in the sixteenth century: Historia nova di tre donne , che ogni vna fece vna beffa al marito per guadagnare vn anello. The carrier's revenge resembles the dénouement of Lope de Vega's play El castigo del discreto (? 1598), but it almost certainly comes from Lope's source, Bandello's novella : Nuovo modo di castigar la moglie ritrovato da un gentiluomo veneziano (1. XXXV.) In the chap-book of 1603 described below the carrier's revenge is brought about by a singer, not by a priest; the inappropriateness of this sop to cleri- calism seems to indicate the existence of an unrecorded earlier edition. The history of the romances of Don Alvaro de Luna is extremely complicated. Don Antonio Pérez Gómez of Cieza published a note on an early example not included in these chap-books in Romance Philology , v, 195 1-2. Since then he has published a complete study of these poems - Romancero de don Alvaro de Luna (1540-1800) - printed privately at Valencia in 1953. The work renders unnecessary a very detailed study of these four chap-books. Señor Pérez Gómez prints all the

poems contained in these four pliegos and some others ; he also gives a long list of the works in which they appeared. He makes no reference to this set of four pliegos, the fourth of which seems to contain the earliest known printed versions of five romances. The notes which follow are greatly indebted to Don Antonio's research.

It is also found in two of the chap-books in the Prague collection (see R. Durán (1242) printed it from another chap-book, dated 1559 (cf. p. lxxix). The old text is reprinted almost exactly in the Pepys chap-book, but of course no mention is made of the fact that it is made to apply to a completely different situation. The words of the Duchess of Guimarans are, it is implied here, by the collocation of the poem among the ballads of Don Alvaro, spoken by Don Alvaro's widow. An old ballad is made into a new one by its position in a new collection.

There are two different texts of this romance which Lope de Vega used as the source for his play Los comendadores de Cordoba (see 30/69 (с), note). The better one is contained in Juan Rufo's: Las seyscientas apotegmas. . . printed by P. Rodriguez of Toledo, 1596: the other opened anonymously the volume of ballads entided Flores del Parnaso of Luis de Medina, printed also by Pedro Rodriguez of Toledo in the same year. Medina's text is much vulgarized and in every way inferior to that in Rufo's own book; Medina also divided the poem into five parts. Medina's text passed into the Romancero general of 1600 (nos. 634-8), and Durán reprinted it in his nos. 1032-6. The better text is available in the edition published by Agustín G. de Amezúa, Las seiscientas apotegmas y otras obras en verso de Juan Rufo (Bibliófilos españoles), Madrid, 1923. It has been asserted that there was apliego suelto of this poem (or poems) before 1596, but the fact has not been proved. The Pepys pliego , though it does not divide the poem into five parts, is based on the text of either Medina or the Romancero general. It contains yet more corruptions.
