Its been over eight months since Ive been in San Diego, and in my short time here Ive been exposed to some of themost amazing artists. Im constantly in awe of the caliber ofwork being created locally. Ive also been exposed to somevery disappointing behavior; as the Executive Director per-haps one of my most important roles is to maintain a safespace for my staff and all the artists we show here. I want toemphasize that mistreatment of staff, volunteers, and artistswill not be tolerated under any circumstance.
I know that change is difcult, and that the implementationof any new initiative may look shocking. I want to assure you
that our mission remains the same, and that we will ALWAYSbe dedicated to supporting and showcasing the work oflocal artists. In fact, I would be hesitant to say that werechanging anything; rather, we are making improvementsto our organization at all levels and augmenting the experi-ence of artist members. As youll see in this issue, there area number of ways that artists can participate in upcomingexhibitions, as well as a number of professional develop-ment opportunities in the coming months that I urge you totake advantage of. Upcoming programs include the mem-bers-only C-Note exhibition on November 22, an inter-active, multicultural and multidisciplinary benet for SDAIon December 12th, and a year-end regional show opening
on December 19th. Submissions for the regional show willbe accepted online from November 1 through November30th!
There are also a variety of ways that artists can participatethrough several of our current open calls. We are still solicit-ing submissions to our Balboa Park at 100 show openingat the end of January, and we are also looking for artists toparticipate in December Nights and FLEX IT! at the JacobsCenter in March, 2015. Additionally, Im looking for nontra-ditional portraiture to highlight in our space in December,so if you have ideas for any works youd like to enter, pleasecontact me directly at [email protected] or visit our
website for more information on these programs. Perhapsmost importantly, I am happy to announce that we receiveda grant from The Parker Foundation to renovate our gallerythis December! These much-needed funds will ensure thatwe full our mission of providing a world-class exhibitionspace.
For those members that have taken the time to get to knowme, youll know that my mission in life is to support artists, and make sure they have the physical, nancial, and emo-tional support to create new work. I would just like to reiter-ate that I have an open door policy; please just be sure to
set up an appointment in advance and I would be happy tochat with you. I also love doing studio visits with artists. Ifyou would like to have me over to see what youre currentlyworking on and get feedback, I would be more than happyto do so. Or if youd like feedback in a larger setting, pleaseconsider joining our bi-monthly crit group. Seats ll upquickly, and are offered on a rst-come, rst-served basis.
Lastly, if you like our programming and core mission of sup-porting local artists, please consider making a donation toour year-end campaign. Donations of any size are welcome. You can simply cut out the section of the newsletter with
donation information and send with a check to SDAI, or youcan make a donation directly online by visiting www.sandi-ego-art.org. Each donation will be matched by the GingerE. and Robert D. Wallace Foundation to ensure that we cancontinue offering quality programming to artists and audi-ences of San Diego and beyond.
I look forward to seeing you at an event soon!

COMEPARTICIPATEIN THE
GLOBALIDENTITYPROJECT2pm-4pm, Saturday, November 8th at SDAIDonPorcellas Global Identity Project began inShanghai, China; this series of photographs aretaken of people from across the globe wearing
one of the artists signature pipe cleaner sculp-tures. The hat symbolizes both China and theUS, but more importantly shows how nationalidentity is giving way to a more inclusive glob-al identity. By wearing the hat, the participantsraise awareness of our increasingly global-ized society where travel and the internet haveblurred the lines of a singular national identity. From 2pm-4pm on Saturday, November 8th,visitors to the gallery can get their photograph-staken by the artist and add to this growing andevolving project.
