Well done San Diego County! This year we had 87 4-H Record Books turned into the County Office for evaluation. County Record Book Evaluation could not have been accomplished without the help of our dedicated volunteers. This year we had 22 volunteers who participated as evaluators. The evaluators attended a 1 hour training and then worked in small groups throughout the county to evaluate a set of Record Books. Evaluator groups met at their own convenience to work collectively on the books or to rotate the set of books so that each book would be evaluated by three separate volunteers. We would like to give a special thanks to the 22 volunteers who piloted this new method for evaluating 4-H Record Books. Your hard work is greatly appreciated!

Your Club could win $400 doing a 4-H Community Improvement Project!!!!!

San Diego County will be awarding one 4-H group a $400 award to carry out their own Community Improve-ment Project. Gather your team of 4 or more youth and at least one adult volunteer and put your heads to-gether to come up with your Community Improvement Project Plan.

1. Start by defining your community: Who are the people in your community, where is your community?

2. Next, do some research to evaluate the issues and concerns that are common in your community. You may want to conduct interviews, look at survey data, or local newspapers and other media sources.

3. Find a rallying point or focus point around which you can organize.

4. Develop a plan to address your area of focus.

Four Key Areas for community building are:

●People Building

Includes Education, Health Services, Cultural Satisfaction, Outreach and Leadership.

●Community Facilities

Includes Housing, Transportation, Utilities, Public Services.

● Environmental Improvement

Includes Conservation, Recreation, and Community Initiatives.

● Economic Development

Includes Jobs, Business and Industry, Credit and Natural Resources.

Your plan should include a short description of your community, a description of the problem you wish to ad-dress, a plan of what you will do and how it will solve the problem and your plans to evaluate your impact.

Plans should be submitted by December 1, 2009 by e-mail to Ruby Rodriguez at [email protected]. Or call (858) 694-2857 for any questions your group might have.

Good Luck to all!
