San Diego Attractions for Families

Walking Distance (< 2 miles) from the Manchester Hyatt

• Seaport Village [849 W Harbor Dr - 0.25 miles] is a 14 acre waterfront shopping, dining and entertainment complex recreating a harbor side setting of a century ago. Includes 54 one of a kind shops, 13 casual dining eateries, 4 fine dining waterfront restaurants.

• New Children’s Museum [200 W Island Ave - 0.25 miles]. Children can learn about all types of art through hands-on exhibits. The New Children’s Museum is the city’s largest green building and it was constructed from recycled material. Interactive exhibits help children learn about energy conservation.

• Old Town Trolley Tours [0.25 miles] are one way to see the city, highlighting the best San Diego attractions with 11 stops and more than 100 points of interest. The Seaport Trolley stop C is near the Manchester Hyatt Hotel and is a drop off and pick up point.

• USS Midway Museum [910 N. Harbor Dr - 0.5 miles] is the longest-serving U.S. Navy aircraft carrier of the 20th century. The ship is open to exploring the galleys, officer’s country, sleeping quarters and the 4 acre flight deck where 4,500 shipmates lived and worked.

• Petco Park [100 Park Blvd - 0.8 miles] is the home of the San Diego Padres, opened in 2004 and combining the best sight lines in baseball with breathtaking views of San Diego.

• Maritime Museum [1492 N Harbor Dr - 1.5 miles] offers a hands- on look at San Diego’s days as a bustling seaport. You can tour different types of ships, from the Star of India, a 19th –century merchant vessel, the B-39, a soviet attack submarine, to the Medea, one of the world’s only remaining steam yachts.

• Water activities (various locations along the harbor): o San Diego SEAL Tour: Travel through the streets and waterways of San Diego in an

amphibious vehicle on this 1.5-hour tour. o Speedboats, sailing boats, cruises, etc. Several companies offer rentals or tours.

Driving Distance from the Manchester Hyatt

• Balboa Park [1549 El Prado, San Diego, CA 92101 – 3 miles – Buses: Route 120 (stop @ 0.5 miles) and Route 7 (stop @ 0.25 miles)] began as 1,400 acres of land set aside in 1868 by San Diego civic leaders. Today the park has been reduced to 1,200 acres and is the home of the famous San Diego Zoo. Attractions at the park include:

• Old Town San Diego State Historic Park [4.25 miles -15 min ride with MTS Trolley Green line] presents the opportunity to experience the history of early San Diego by providing a connection to the past. Learn about life in the Mexican and early American periods of 1821 to 1872. Visitors are offered a glimpse into yesteryear, as converging cultures transformed San Diego from a Mexican pueblo to an American settlement. The core of restored original historic buildings from the interpretive period are complemented by reconstructed sites, along with early twentieth century buildings designed in the same mode. The Historic Plaza remains a gathering place for community events and historic activity. Five original adobe buildings are part of the historic park, which includes museums, unique retail shops, and several restaurants.

• Coronado Beach and Hotel Del Coronado [1500 Orange Ave, Coronado – 5.4 miles - MTS Trolley Green line to Imperial Transit Center then Bus Route #901]. A national historic landmark, the Del is considered one of America's most beautiful resorts. Built in 1888 and recently restored, the resort has a rich and colorful heritage.

• SeaWorld San Diego [500 Sea World Drive – 6.25 miles – MTS Trolley to Old Town then Bus Route #9] attractions include the Shamu show, rides like Journey to Atlantis, Shipwreck Rapids and Wild Arctic, a 280,000 gallon aquarium, the Pets Rule show , and the ability to get up-close to beluga whales, polar bears, sharks and penguins.

• The Living Coast Discovery Center [1000 Gunpowder Point Drive, Chula Vista – 7.25 miles - 15 min ride with MTS Blue line Trolley to Bay Front/E Street station] offers an intimate nature experience on San Diego Bay. Visitors enjoy up-close animal encounters with endangered green sea turtles, shorebirds, hawks, owls, sharks, stingrays, jellies and more.

• Mission Bay Park [8 miles - MTS Trolley Green line to Old Town then Bus Route #30] is a 4,600-acre aquatic playground surrounded by 27 miles of meandering shoreline, with a variety of waterways, inlets and islets to explore. You can enjoy water sports activities of many kinds, from laid-back sailing outings to action-packed kite surfing.

• Belmont Park [3146 Mission Blvd – 8 miles - MTS Trolley Green line to Old Town then Bus Route #8] located on the surf and sand of Mission Beach is San Diego's only beachfront amusement center with the historic Giant Dipper roller coaster, The Plunge swimming pool, and simulated wave machines. Free parking and entrance, fees for attractions only.

• Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcala [10818 San Diego Mission Rd – 8.8 miles - MTS Trolley Green line to Mission San Diego Station] is California's first church, founded in 1769 by Father Junipero Serra himself. In 1775, it was burned down by protesting Native Americans. After being

subsequently rebuilt, it was once again severely damaged in 1803 by an earthquake, and rebuilt again. It is still an active Roman Catholic Parish.

• Point Loma [11 miles - MTS Green line Trolley to Old Town then Bus Route #28 and 84] offers tidepools, beautiful views of the San Diego coast line and on a clear day views to Tijuana, Mexico. During low tide the tidepools allow you to get up close and personal with anemones, shore crabs, octopi, and other sea creatures. On the very southern tip of Point Loma is the Cabrillo National Monument. The statue depicts Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who, in 1542, was the first European explorer to navigate the California coast. Nearby the monument is a light house and visitor center which offers insight into San Diego’s maritime history.

• La Jolla Cove [12.5 miles - MTS Trolley Green line to Old Town then Bus Route #30] has magnificent views of the sunset on the ocean. La Jolla cove is a spectacular natural setting with restaurants and shops nearby.

• LEGOLAND California Resort [1 Legoland Dr – 34 miles – Train Coaster to Carlsbad Village Station then Bus Route #321] is a hands-on experience with more than 60 rides, shows, and attractions. The resort is home to LEGOLAND Water Park, SEALIFE Aquarium, Jellyfish Discovery and LEGO Legends of CHIMA Water Park.

• San Diego Zoo’s Safari Park [15500 San Pasqual Valley Rd, Escondido – 35 miles - MTS Trolley Green line to Santee then Bus Routes #810 and 350] is located north of San Diego in Escondido. Here you can see some of Africa’s most beloved animals, including lions, elephants and cheetahs roaming in large open enclosures.

• Westfield Horton Plaza [324 Horton Plaza - 0.5 miles]. Horton Plaza is located just blocks from the San Diego Convention Center with entrances on First Avenue & G Street or Fourth Avenue and E Street. Anchored by Macy's and Nordstrom, Horton Plaza has more than 100 specialty stores for necessities or splurges, plus exciting dining and entertainment options.

• Coronado Ferry Landing [1201 First St, Coronado – 4.4 miles - 30 min ride with MTS Trolley Green line] can be reached by car, boat or aboard the Flagship ferry from across the bay Coronado Ferry Landing and includes more than 25 unique shops, including art galleries, bike rentals, sweet treats, fine and casual dining all while taking in the amazing view of the downtown San Diego skyline.

• Fashion Valley [7007 Friars Rd - 6.2 miles - 30 min ride with MTS Trolley Green line] houses over 200 fine stores and restaurants, a movie theater, and is a popular San Diego retail and tourist destination, meeting every budget, style and taste.

• Las Americas Premium Outlet [4211 Camino De La Plaza – 17.6 miles - MTS Trolley Green line to 12th & Imperial Transit Center then MTS Blue line to Iris Ave then Bus #907] offers 125 outlet stores where you are sure to find slashed prices and clearance sales. Las Americas Premium Outlets is located just north of the United States and Mexico Border in the San Ysidro area of San Diego.

• Carlsbad Premium Outlet [5620 Paseo Del Norte, Carlsbad – 31.9 miles – San Diego Coaster Train from the Santa Fe Depot Station then 1.6 miles walking] features 90 outlet stores offering every day savings of 25% to 65% in an attractive outdoor village setting. The center features an impressive collection of designers and leading brands. Dining options include indoor and outdoor seating.

Sept. 24-28 San Diego Film Festival This annual festival offers a fresh take on film premieres, featuring American and international features, thought-provoking documentaries, short films and music videos.

Sept. 28 Cabrillo Festival The exploration of the U.S. West Coast by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542 is commemorated at Cabrillo National Monument on Point Loma.

Sept. 27-28 33nd Annual Adams Avenue Street Fair One of the largest free music street fairs in California, the event features over 70 live musical acts, held on six stages, along with three beer gardens, giant carnival rides and 300 craft and food vendors.

Sept. 28 10-Mile Relay & Solo Swim Join the La Jolla Cove Swim Club in this competitive fundraiser event to benefit the American Diabetes Association and San Diego Lifeguard Foundation.

Oct. 3-5 Oktoberfest in La Mesa This traditional German celebration features dancing, food, Bavarian bands, arts and crafts and commercial booths in the San Diego East County city of La Mesa.

Oct. 3-5 MCAS Miramar Air Show This award-winning, world-class air show features the best military and civilian pilots in the world, including the U.S. Navy's famous Blue Angels. The three-day event is the largest military air show in the nation, with total annual attendance estimated at 700,000.

Oct. 4 Pacific Beachfest This year Pacific Beachfest will feature: The Best of The Beach Fish Taco Contest, RSSS 5.0 Pro/Am Surf Competition Finals, with surfers competing from around the world, Action Alley, a competitive Beach Volley Ball Tournament, 5K fun run and all your favorite, artist, vendors, activities and music! The public is invited to enjoy this free family-friendly outdoor celebration of the beach.

Oct. 5 Mission Bay Triathlon As Southern California's most popular sprint triathlon, the race features a calm 500-meter swim, a fast-paced 15K bike ride, and a thundering 5K run. About 1,800 participants.

Oct. 12 20th Annual Little Italy FESTA! This colorful Italian celebration features music, fine food and "Gesso Italiano," a traditional Italian street-painting festival, held in downtown San Diego's Little Italy neighborhood.

Oct. 11-12 La Jolla Wine and Art Festival Featuring the works of over 150 established artists from San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange County, Baja and beyond, the La Jolla Festival features something for everyone including a silent auction, roving entertainment, a gourmet marketplace, the Geppetto's/La Jolla YMCA Family Art Center and a wine and beer garden which will include premier wineries from around the world in addition to San Diego’s top breweries. The Festival is free and open to the public, with cash donations accepted at all the festival entrances.

Oct. 13 Fifth Avenue Auto Showcase The Gaslamp Quarter Association will celebrate new and vintage high-performance vehicles at the 6th Annual Fifth Avenue Auto Showcase.
