TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

In brushing up for “Catholic Jeopardy,” it might help to know that there is only one feast on the calendar for a thing, rather than a person or mystery. It’s for a chair: Saint Peter’s chair in fact

A er the Resurrec on, there can be no doubt that the disci-ples reserved a special place for Simon Peter in the upper room. Later, Peter became the bishop of An och in today’s Syria, the place where we were first called “Chris ans.” From there, he went to Rome, the center of the Empire, where it is said that Peter sat in a chair in the house of Priscilla and Aquila to instruct his flock. Jesus, in entrus ng the keys of the King-dom to Peter and his successors, entrusted his compassion and mercy to them, and charged them with poin ng to the Kingdom of God. Compassion and mercy are to resonate through their teaching.

Since the ancient sign of a teacher is the chair (“disciple” liter-ally means one who sits at the feet of a teacher), Peter’s chair has long been treasured. Today there is a symbolic shrine of Peter’s chair above the main altar of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. This monument is the last work of Bernini, a huge bronze throne supported by four doctors of the Church: Au-gus ne and Ambrose from the Western Church, and Chrysos-tom and Athanasius from the East. High above it is the alabaster window of the descent of the Holy Spirit.

The Caritas Corner Thank you all for your continued generosity and love in action in caring for our brothers and sisters in need in our community. The Caritas – or “Charity” -- Fund is administered by the San Francescani Society and funded through the second collection normally on the third Sunday of each month. Its purpose is to assist recipients – who through no fault of their own have fallen on hard times and have recognizable “one time” needs – in “getting back on their feet.” Since the beginning of the fund in Dec 2014 over $11,000 worth of assistance has been disbursed – again, as a result of your tremendous generosity.

Throughout the year we are continually looking for additional brothers and sisters in need in our community who deserve our help. We would value any input you might have in helping us identify those in need. Inputs can be made to Ron Bucchi, Society President, 210-857-1115.

All donations are tax deductible under SFDP’s 501(c) (3) designation as a not-for-profit entity. Again, we are funded through the second collection donations normally on the third Sunday of each month. In addition to the once a month second collection, the Caritas Fund ac-

cepts individual as well as business donations. Donations can also be mailed to: Henry Garcia, Treasurer, San Francescani Society, P.O. Box 782474, San Antonio, TX 78278-2474

Again, thank you for your generosity and support and we look forward to keeping you updated as we continue to help our brothers and sisters in need.

San Francescani Society

If you would like to donate a flower arrangement to decorate our church for each week for masses in honor of a loved one please call Rose Marie Pagonis at 210-344-4226 or 210-289-9887. The cost of these arrangements are $30 for two small vases of flowers.

Their name and who requested them will be acknowledged in the Sunday bulle n. The check should be made payable to Flowers by Grace and given to Rose Marie. Thank you for your help in remembering your loved one and making our church look beau ful.
