8 SAN FERNANDO VALLEY BUSINESS JOURNAL THE LIST MAY 1, 2017
By HELEN FLOERSH Staff Reporter
The Garland Hotel’s remodel has been
good for business. The interior at the North
Hollywood establishment features wood-pan-
eled walls and homage to the Hollywood glam-
or of late actress Beverly Garland, the hotel’s
former owner. And at 257 rooms, the refur-
bished Garland ranks No. 13 on the Business
Journal’s list of Valley hotels (see page 9).
In particular, the
rebrand has attract-
ed business travelers.
General Manager Scott Mills estimates that as
many as a quarter of
all guests are in town
for work – though they
manage to find time to
play, too, as evidenced
by the popularity of the
hotel bar’s late-night
happy hour among corporate types.
“We’ve become more attractive to the enter-
tainment industry since the relaunch,” Mills
said. “We’ve also added a lot of programming
that works out for the business traveler, like
access to a personal trainer at the fitness center.”
While international “travel bans” by Pres-
ident Donald Trump have left some indus-
try leaders feeling lukewarm on this year’s
outlook for U.S. business travel, hoteliers in
Los Angeles expect the region’s record-break-
ing tourism momentum to continue in 2017.
L.A. hosted more than 47 million visitors last
year, according to the
Los Angeles Tourism
& Convention Board,
and became the first in
the nation to host more
than 1 million Chinese
tourists in a single year.
Major infrastructure
investments, such as
improved public trans-
portation and a $1.6 bil-
lion concourse addition
at the Tom Bradley International Terminal at
the Los Angeles International Airport, position
the city for further growth as a business travel
destination, said Murray Lowe, an L.A. Tour-
ism Board member and general manager of
Marriott Woodland Hills, the No. 4 hotel on
the Business Journal’s list.
“The future of Los Angeles tourism is
incredibly bright regardless of our economic
challenges,” Lowe said. “I think we’re going to
be very prosperous.”
Full speed ahead As many as 70 percent of the Marriott’s
guests are in town for work, Lowe said. The
hotel last fall unveiled amenities geared toward
a new generation of business traveler, includ-
ing entertainment packages that offer access
to YouTube and Netflix streaming, meeting
rooms equipped with wide-screen televi-
sions and spacious guest suites designed for
light-packing, efficiency-minded millennials.
“The way people are doing business is
changing. … The way we work includes a mix
of business, entertainment and leisure in the
same 24 hours,” Lowe said. The Marriott has
tripled the amount of bandwidth available to
guests to accommodate their use of multiple
devices at once, he added.
The Garland has amped up its online offer-
ings as well, moving from paper-based check-in
procedures to tablets at its front desk. The house-
keeping and engineering staff communicates
work orders and other information wirelessly
over Apple Inc. products, according to Mills.
“We’re going all paperless,” he said.
The largest hotel on the Business Journal’s
list, the 495-room Hilton Los Angeles/Uni-versal City, also has rolled out new digital fea-
tures in addition to making sweeping aesthetic
renovations. Qualified members of the Hilton
Honors program can
select and check into a
room on their mobile
devices, a service that
has been particularly
well-received by corpo-
rate guests, said Direc-
tor of Marketing and
Sales Cynthia Ordyke.
The Hilton recently
completed updates to
its business center and
lobby, and will have new furniture in all guest
rooms by the start of June. It begin renovations
to its ballroom in September, she added.
“By the end of the year we’ll be a brand-
new Hilton,” Ordyke said. “I think it’s some-
thing the community should definitely come
and visit.”
Weathering AirbnbDespite industrywide concerns about com-
petition from short-term rental platform Airb-nb, none of the properties interviewed by the
Business Journal felt the app had any signifi-
cant effect on their operations.
“There may be a few guests who try,” Mills
said. “But our property is unique, with amenities
and programming you wouldn’t find on Airbnb.”
Recent reports suggest he is correct. A 2016
analysis by Smith Travel Research found that
cities with the highest Airbnb occupancy also
had the highest occupancy rates for hotels, sug-
gesting that travelers were using the accommo-
dations for different reasons rather than using
one over the other. Business travelers especially
seemed more likely to stay at traditional lodges,
as significantly fewer users of Airbnb did so for
work-related trips than for leisure, the report said.
The Marriott’s Lowe, who rented a flat for
his family’s trip to Paris, offered a possible
explanation.
“Airbnb is a way to experience a commu-
nity. In that sense, it’s not a direct competitor,”
he said. “It serves as a place to stay when you
don’t have the needs of a hotel.”
