PAST MEETING Our Februar y Proqram Mas presented by Ma rtha Mise, who spoke about the various laws and rules that qoverned the lives of our ancestors in the va rio us countries of Europe prior to the twentieth century. This talk beQan with the subject of marriaqe, and specifically delt with the allowable deqree of relationship for Jewish marriaqe, arranqed and the effects of learnina and versus commercial skills and · trades on the desirability of a man for marriaqe. Ta x es on Jews. the lack of Jewish civil riqhts, and the property and location restrictions on Jews was the ne xt subject. Ma rt ha also spoke about Schutzjuden (Protected Jews) and the Hofjuden (Court Jew s) and what was invol v ed in obtainina their special status. Familianten or Familv Laws, which limited the qrowth of the numbers of Jews in an area by restrictinq marriaqEs was the next topic. The talk concluded with a discussion of travel permits, safe conduct papers for businessmen, nalinq conventions. and restrictions on what Jews eQuId take with the. when they left Europe. A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT

We are qrowinq' We now have 33 paid members. Our newsletter. which has a current circulation of over 100. is sent to members, prospectivE IEmbErs. synagoques, libraries, archives. a limited number of newspapers, and other Genealogical Societies. Attendance at our meetinqs has also increased to the point where we will soon outgrow our meeting space. California Federal's Community Room is a lovely place to meet. is easy to reach. and best of all. has plenty of parking near by, but we are considerina a larger meetinq place for our expanding croup.

We have prospects for SEveral interestina quest speakers. Rabbi Ungar will present our program for October. A representati ve from the Sinai Memorial Chapel has been asked to speak at either our June or Auqust meeting an Jewish burial customs , Jewish celeteries in the Bay Area. and records held by Sinai as well as by local cemeteries and svnaqoques. If you have an idea far a proqram that you think would be interestinq. please let roe know about it.

We have a new board leiber, Madge Perkel. our Recordinq Secretary. She is doinQ a superb job recordinq the minutes of our beneral and board meetinQs. We split the job of Secretary when the lark became too much for one individual. Pete carried the burden for much of the year and outdid hilself. We are still seekinQ additional board members and a ProQram Chair and Membership Chair. Please let me know if you are interested in any of these positions.

Our Treasurer . Pat Futoran, reports that our treasury has a respectable balance, so we are able to repay our loan from Martha Wise, wh ich opened our check inq account. Pat has wisely invested our money in an interest bearing checkino accoun t . Thank you, Pat.
