2020 MLB FIRST-YEAR PLAYER DRAFTThe Giants had seven picks in the abbreviated five-round 2020 MLB First-Year Player Draft held last week. Get to know some more about each of the picks below.

The San Francisco Giants selected catcher Patrick Bailey (North Carolina State) with the 13th overall selection in the 2020 First-Year Player Draft. The 6-foot-2, 207-pound junior hit .296 with a team-leading six home runs and 20 RBI over 17 games (16 starts) during the 2020 season, which was cut short due to COVID-19. Despite the shortened season, Bailey ranked tied for second in RBI (20), third in walks (17) and tied for fourth in home runs (6) among all ACC players. Three of Bailey’s six homers in 2020 were grand slams, which he hit over an 11-day span; the first against Tennessee Tech on February 22, the second against Iowa on February 28 and the third against Coastal Carolina on March 4.

As a sophomore in 2019, Bailey was named First Team All-ACC, ABCA All-Region and Collegiate Baseball Third Team All-American after compiling a .288 clip with 68 hits, 17 doubles, 10 homers and a .513 slugging percent-age. Bailey was also one of 14 semifinalists for the Buster Posey Award, given to the nation’s best catcher. In 2018, Bailey led all ACC freshmen in hitting (.321), total bases (113) and slugging (.604) while also setting a new NC State freshman home run record (13) on his way to being named the ACC Freshman of the Year. He also threw out 11 runners on the basepaths and recorded a .983 fielding percentage.

The switch-hitter homered from both sides of the plate in the same game twice in his career at NC State. Once as a freshman vs. William and Mary and again this past February vs. Iowa. No other player in program

history has achieved the feat even once.

The Greensboro, N.C. native has been a part of three different USA teams as he played for the U.S. Col-legiate National Team in both 2018 and 2019, in addition to playing for the 2016 18U National Team that

won a gold medal at the COPABE Pan Am “AAA” Championships in Mexico.

Bailey is the ninth first-round pick in NC State history and is tied for the second-highest drafted player out of NC State in the regular June Draft. While at NC State, Bailey was teammates with Giants prospect Will Wilson, who was originally drafted by the Angels as the 15th overall pick in 2019.

Bailey was originally drafted out of Wesleyan Christian Academy, his North Carolina high school, in the 37th round by the Twins in 2017. He and Wil Myers are the only two players to be drafted out of Wesleyan. In his senior year of high school, Bailey led Wesleyan to a second consecutive North Carolina independent schools state championship, batting .510 with five home runs and 33 RBIs in 28 games.

NC STATERND1 PICK# 13

With their second selection (49th overall), the San Francisco Giants selected 3B Casey Schmitt out of San Diego State. The 6-foot-2, 200-pounder hit .323 with four doubles and nine RBI in 16 games and recorded six saves as the Aztecs closer in the shortened 2020 season. Schmitt received second-team all-Mountain West recognition in 2019 after finishing the season with a .315 batting average, five home runs, 36 RBI and a .415 on-base percentage. The San Diego native also made 21 appearances (four starts) as a pitcher, going 3-3 with a 3.77 ERA in 43.0 innings and a team-high eight saves. As a freshman he became the first SDSU player since Stephen Strasburg in 2007 to be named a freshman first-team All-American by Baseball America after setting SDSU’s single season earned run average record with a 0.28 mark (min. 30ip).

SAN DIEGO STATERND2 PICK#49

With the 67th overall selection, the Giants selected LHP Nick Swiney out of NC State. The Huntersville, N.C. native moved into the Wolfpack starting rotation this year as a junior after two seasons of mostly coming out of the bullpen as a middle reliever. In four starts prior to the COVID-19 shutdown, Swiney went 4-0 with a 1.29 ERA (4er, 28.0ip) and struck out 42 batters en route to being named a Collegiate Baseball Second-Team All-American. On February 29 vs. Purdue, he tossed 8.0 innings and fanned 15 batters while allowing one hit. In three years in Raleigh, Swiney went 15-1 with a 3.51 ERA (45er, 115.1ip) and 174 strikeouts in 50 games (eight starts) for the Wolfpack. He struck out a team-leading 95 batters during his sophomore season over 26 games (three starts). He was a teammate of the Giants 2020 first-round selection Patrick Bailey for all three of his seasons on campus at NC State and played with Will Wilson, whom the Giants acquired in December, for his first two seasons on campus.

NC STATECOMP PICK#67

With their fourth pick in the compensation round (68th overall), the Giants selected SS Jimmy Glowenke out of Dallas Baptist University. The 5-foot-10, 186-pound shortstop hit .415 (22-for-53) with seven RBI in 13 games for the Patriots in 2020. Glowenke is a two-time All-Missouri Valley Conference First Team Selection (2018-19). In his sophomore year he finished the year in the top 10 in nine offensive categories in the MVC including second in doubles (16), third in hits (80) and on-base percentage (.429) and fourth in batting average (.328). He compiled one of the most decorated freshman seasons in school history after being named a consensus Freshman All-American by five publications. He was also tabbed as the Freshman of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in the Missouri Valley Conference.

JIMMYGLOWENKESS

DALLAS BAPTISTCOMP PICK#68

With their third round selection (#85th overall), the Giants selected LHP Kyle Harrison from De La Salle High School in Concord, CA. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound left-handed pitcher went 21-1 with a 1.19 ERA and 192 strikeouts in his high school career. Ranked 63rd by MLBPipeline among top draft prospects, the Danville native went 10-0 with a 1.26 ERA as a junior for the Spartans. Last summer, he had the top ERA in the 2019 WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup while pitching for Team USA. He didn’t allow a run in 10.0 innings while striking out 12 batters. His maternal grandfather, Skip Guinn, pitched parts of three seasons with the Atlanta Braves and Houston Astros between 1968-71. Guinn, who had 40 strikeouts in 36.2 big league innings, was a teammate of Hall of Famers Hank Aaron, Joe Torre, Phil Niekro, Joe Morgan and former San Francisco Giants managers Dusty Baker and Felipe Alou.

In his first season with the Sun Devils in 2019, he posted a 7-1 record with a 4.75 ERA (28er, 53.0ip) in 16 games (nine starts). Dabovich was teammates with Giants’ 2019 first round pick, Hunter Bishop, while at Arizona State. He was ranked as the No. 9 overall player in the state of Colorado and the No. 5 right-handed pitcher in the state coming out of high school. Dabovich was originally drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 18th Round (542nd overall) of the 2018 First Year Player Draft.

COACH SPEAK: NICK ORTIZ Each week we'll get to know the new Giants coaches with a few fun ques-tions in this space. This week it's Quality Assurance Coach Nick Ortiz.

After you got the call from Gabe that you’d been offered a job on the Major League coaching staff, who was the first person you told or called?

NO: The first person I told the great news was my wife of 14 yrs and the mother of my two younger kids Rosalie Hernandez. I was in my yard talking to Kap and after the call ended I went inside the house and told her the good news. We embraced on a hug, cried of joy and told our son and daugh-ter Christian and Alexandra who are 11 and four. It was a great day for us, especially when we were able to break the news later that day to my whole family.

Growing up in Puerto Rico, who were some of your favorite Major League players as a kid?

NO: Growing up in PR my Favorite team until i was eight was the Yankees mostly because it was the team they showed the most on TV. When I was eight we moved to Chicago and I became a fan of the Cubs. My favorite player was Ryne Sand-berg for the period I lived there, I later got to meet Sandberg in MLB ST with the Cubs. When I was close to turning 13 we moved back to P.R and be-came pretty much a fan of the game and rooted for many teams and admired the ability of many, many players.

Favorite movie theater snack?

NO: I like going to the movies and it wouldn’t be the same without big nachos with melted cheese and an XL Coke. I enjoy the popcorn as well.

GIANTS PLAYER SPOTLIGHT | LOGAN WEBB Born November 18, 1996, in Moun-

tain View then moved to Rocklin, near Sacramento, when he was a year old.

Logan grew up going to both A’s and Giants games but mostly A’s because his father was a fan. Logan’s favorite A’s: Tim Hudson, Bobby Crosby and Stephen Vogt (who would catch him

in his major league debut with the Giants).

He was always a happy kid and a people person.

Talks to everyone. Also an old soul. Loved to

hang out with grand-parents and parents

and listen to sto-ries about their childhoods.

Obsessed with sports since he

was a toddler, his mother said. “Liter-

ally at age two he started mimicking baseball players

he saw on television,’’ she said. “Say a name and he’d get up and do all their little antics at the plate. Logan and his dad played catch all the time, and the family put up a net in the garage so Logan could throw into it whenever he wanted.’’

Bedroom was wall-to-wall sports, including photos of Barry Bonds. His mother still

has the paper from elementary school on which he wrote he wanted to grow up to play for the San Francisco Gi-ants. It was all he cared about.

Even as a kid he stayed calm on the field, shaking off failures. At 12 years old when his Little League team made it to the Western Regional finals, an umpire told his parents, “This kid is going to be big.’’

He is considered legally blind be-cause of astigmatism, which causes blurred vision. Diagnosed in 3rd or 4th grade when he was having a hard time seeing the ball. Wore glasses until age 11 or 12, which made foot-ball difficult, then switched to con-tacts. He still usually wears glasses when he’s not playing ball.

A versatile, all-around athlete, he played both baseball and football be-ginning at age five and six. For a long time, football was his favorite. “He’d be the one on the sidelines following the coach, listening to everything he said,’’ his mother said.

In football, he started out as a line-man until coaches recognized his strong, accurate arm and his focused mind. As a quarterback at Rocklin High, he threw 47 touchdowns, com-piling 3,767 career yards. As a pitcher, he had a 0.49 ERA and struck out 73 in 57.2 innings his senior year.

“You kind of have to get fired up to play a football game,’’ he told Base-ball America in 2018. “I try to bring

that to the mound every time I pitch.’’ Also played shortstop, catcher and

occasionally left field in high school. Didn’t draw a lot of attention from

baseball scouts, probably because he didn’t play in showcases like Perfect Game USA or Area Code Baseball. It wasn’t until the last regular-season game of his senior year that scouts finally took notice. They were at the game to watch the opposing team’s pitcher. They were impressed and watched him in a few subsequent playoff games.

BEYOND THE GIANT VAULT Housed in a 5,000 square foot building, the Giants Archives consists of memorabilia and artifacts from our team’s 138-year history. As part of the Giants Fan Page, fans can now, for the first time, learn about and view memorabilia from our collection. Using Lon Simmons’ tag line “Tell It Goodbye”, the Giants celebrated the end of the millennium and the final year of baseball at Candlestick/3Com Park in 1999. Wednesday, September 29, 1999 was the end of a Giants tra-dition that began in 1983. Originally handed out to any fan who stayed un-til the end of a night game that went into extra innings, the Giants highlighted the significance of night games by presenting the first 40,000 fans through the gate that night a Commemorative Croix De Candlestick pin. A little larg-er than the original pins, the final Croix featured the traditional pin, but add-

ed the words “Last Night Game at The Stick • Sept. 29, 1999 Giants Vs. Dodgers” along the outside rim. Click to visit the vault and look at other mementos from the Tell It Goodbye season starting Thursday

KAPLER'S KITCHEN Each week, Manager

Gabe Kapler will give us some of his favorite food spots

from around the US, in no particular order.

Choosing a restaurant in my neighborhood (North Beach) was a tall task. There are so many fantastic restaurants within walking distance.

The House is Asian Fusion. It’s on my list for their overall inge-nuity and consistency (no fewer than 8 visits in a span of a few months) but mostly because of the BBQ oyster appetizer.

Sweet, spicy, fresh and the perfect start to a meal. The House is no frills and all about the flavors.
