The rulers sneered at Jesus and said, “He saved others, let him save himself if he is the chosen one, the Christ of God.” Even the soldiers jeered at him. As they approached to offer him wine they called out, “If you are King of the Jews, save yourself.” Above him there was an inscription that read, “This is the King of the Jews.” Now one of the criminals hanging there reviled Jesus,
saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us.” The other, however, rebuking him, said in reply, “Have you no fear of God, for you are subject to the same condemnation? And indeed, we have been condemned justly, for the sentence we received corresponds to our crimes, but this man has done nothing criminal.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” He replied to him, “Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”
Every year on the final Sunday in Ordinary Time the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Christ the King. This feast was added to the calendar of feasts by Pope Pius XI on December 11, 1925. The image of the Messiah King is everywhere in the Old Testament and Christians today hail Christ as King of the universe. But, today’s reading leaves no doubt that Jesus is a special kind of king. He reigned from a cross, an instrument of torture, which served as his throne amidst ridicule and laughter. The text on the plate attached to the cross, “This is the King of the Jews,” mocks Jesus and the Jews, but it also indicates that sedition was the specific crime with which he was charged. Crucifixion was the penalty for such a crime. This episode appears only in the Gospel of Luke. The penitent sinner received salvation through the forgiveness of the crucified Jesus. Jesus’ words reveal Luke's understanding that the destiny of the Christian is "to be with Jesus," and that his death had opened the way to salvation today.
“The word ‘paradise’ was a Persian term for an enclosed park and was used in Genesis for the Garden of Eden. Late Hebrew writings considered paradise an intermediate state of happiness of the righteous before the final judgment. This intermediate state seems to have been the meaning of paradise here.” (The Collegeville Bible Commentary. The Liturgical Press, 1988)

A Little Bit of History Pope Pius XI instituted The Feast of Christ the King in 1925 for the universal church in his encyclical Quas Primas. He connected the denial of Christ as
king to the rise of secularism. At the time of Quas Primas, secularism was rising, and many Christians (including Catholics) began to doubt Christ's authority and existence, as well as the Church's power to continue Christ's authority. Pius XI, and the rest of the Christian world, witnessed the rise of dictatorships in Europe, and saw Catholics being taken in by these earthly leaders. Just as the Feast of Corpus Christi was instituted when devotion to the Eucharist was at a low point, the Feast of Christ the King was instituted during a time when respect for Christ and the Church was waning, when the feast was most needed. In fact, it is still needed today, as these problems have not vanished, but instead have worsened. Pius hoped the institution of the feast would have various effects.
They were: 1. That nations would see that the Church has the right to
freedom, and immunity from the state (Quas Primas, 32). 2. That leaders and nations would see that they are bound to
give respect to Christ (Quas Primas, 31). 3. That the faithful would gain strength and courage from the
celebration of the feast, as we are reminded that Christ must reign in our hearts, minds, wills, and bodies (Quas Primas, 33). Today, the same distrust of authority exists, although the problem has gotten worse. Individualism has been embraced to such an extreme, that for many, the only authority is the individual self. The idea of Christ as ruler is rejected in such a strongly individualistic system. Also, many balk at the idea of kings and queens, believing them to be oppressive. Some even reject the titles of "lord" and "king" for Christ because they believe that such titles are borrowed from oppressive systems of government. However true these statements might be (some kings have been oppressive), these individuals miss the point: Christ's kingship is one of humility and service. Jesus said: You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to become great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:42-45, NAB) And Pilate said to Jesus, "Are you the King of the Jews?"... Jesus answered, "My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom did belong to this world, my attendants would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not here." So Pilate said to him, "Then you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say I am a king. For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth (John 18:33b, 36-37).

¿Porque Celebramos El Día De Cristo Rey?
Cristo es el Rey del universo y de cada uno de nosotros. Es una de las fiestas más importantes del calendario litúrgico, porque celebramos que Cristo es el Rey del universo. Su Reino es el Reino de la verdad y la vida,
de la santidad y la gracia, de la justicia, del amor y la paz. Un poco de historia La fiesta de Cristo Rey fue instaurada por el Papa Pío XI el 11 de Marzo de 1925. El Papa quiso motivar a los católicos a reconocer en público que el mandatario de la Iglesia es Cristo Rey. Posteriormente se movió la fecha de la celebración dándole un Nuevo sentido. Al cerrar el año litúrgico con esta fiesta se quiso resaltar la importancia de Cristo como centro de toda la historia universal. Es el alfa y el omega, el principio y el fin. Cristo reina en las personas con su mensaje de amor, justicia y servicio. El Reino de Cristo es eterno y universal, es decir, para siempre y para todos los hombres. Con la fiesta de Cristo Rey se concluye el año litúrgico. Esta fiesta tiene un sentido escatólogico pues celebramos a Cristo como Rey de todo el universo. Sabemos que el Reino de Cristo ya ha comenzado, pues se hizo presente en la tierra a partir de su venida al mundo hace casi dos mil años, pero Cristo no reinará definitivamente sobre todos los hombres hasta que vuelva al mundo con toda su gloria al final de los tiempos, en la Parusía. Si quieres conocer lo que Jesús nos anticipó de ese gran día, puedes leer el Evangelio de Mateo 25,31-46. En la fiesta de Cristo Rey celebramos que Cristo puede empezar a reinar en nuestros corazones en el momento en que nosotros se lo permitamos, y así el Reino de Dios puede hacerse presente en nuestra vida. De esta forma vamos instaurando desde ahora el Reino de Cristo en nosotros mismos y en nuestros hogares, empresas y ambiente. Jesús nos habla de las características de su Reino a través de varias parábolas en el capítulo 13 de Mateo: “es semejante a un grano de mostaza que uno toma y arroja en su huerto y crece y se convierte en un árbol, y las aves del cielo anidan en sus ramas”; “es semejante al fermento que una mujer toma y echa en tres medidas de harina hasta que fermenta toda”; “es semejante a un tesoro escondido en un campo, que quien lo encuentra lo oculta, y lleno de alegría, va, vende cuanto tiene y compra aquel campo”; “es semejante a un mercader que busca perlas preciosas, y hallando una de
gran precio, va, vende todo cuanto tiene y la compra”. En ellas, Jesús nos hace ver claramente que vale la pena buscarlo y encontrarlo, que vivir el Reino de Dios vale más que todos los tesoros de la tierra y que su crecimiento será discreto, sin que nadie sepa cómo ni cuándo, pero eficaz. La Iglesia tiene el encargo de predicar y extender el reinado de Jesucristo entre los hombres. Su predicación y extensión debe ser el centro de nuestro afán vida como miembros de la Iglesia. Se trata de lograr que Jesucristo reine en el corazón de los hombres, en el seno de los hogares, en las sociedades y en los pueblos. Con esto conseguiremos alcanzar un mundo nuevo en el que reine el amor, la paz y la justicia y la salvación eterna de todos los hombres. Para lograr que Jesús reine en nuestra vida, en primer lugar debemos conocer a Cristo. La lectura y reflexión del Evangelio, la oración personal y los sacramentos son medios para conocerlo y de los que se reciben gracias que van abriendo nuestros corazones a su amor. Se trata de conocer a Cristo de una manera experiencial y no sólo teológica. Acerquémonos a la Eucaristía, Dios mismo, para recibir de su abundancia. Oremos con profundidad escuchando a Cristo que nos habla. Al conocer a Cristo empezaremos a amarlo de manera espontánea, por que Él es toda bondad. Y cuando uno está enamorado se le nota. El tercer paso es imitar a Jesucristo. El amor nos llevará casi sin darnos cuenta a pensar como Cristo, querer como Cristo y a sentir como Cristo, viviendo una vida de verdadera caridad y autenticidad cristiana. Cuando imitamos a Cristo conociéndolo y amándolo, entonces podemos experimentar que el Reino de Cristo ha comenzado para nosotros. Por último, vendrá el compromiso apostólico que consiste en llevar nuestro amor a la acción de extender el Reino de Cristo a todas las almas mediante obras concretas de apostolado. No nos podremos detener. Nuestro amor comenzará a desbordarse. Dedicar nuestra vida a la extensión del Reino de Cristo en la tierra es lo mejor que podemos hacer, pues Cristo nos premiará con una alegría y una paz profundas e imperturbables en todas las circunstancias de la vida. A lo largo de la historia hay innumerables testimonios de cristianos que han dado la vida por Cristo como el Rey de sus vidas. Un ejemplo son los mártires de la guerra cristera en México en los años 20’s, quienes por defender su fe, fueron perseguidos y todos ellos murieron gritando “¡Viva Cristo Rey!”. La fiesta de Cristo Rey, al finalizar el año litúrgico es una oportunidad de imitar a estos mártires promulgando públicamente que Cristo es el Rey de nuestras vidas, el Rey de reyes, el Principio y el Fin de todo el Universo.

Todos los años, en el último domingo del tiempo Ordinario, la Iglesia celebra la solemnidad de Cristo Rey. Esta fiesta fue añadida al Calendario Litúrgico por el Papa Pío XI, el 11 de diciembre de 1925. La imagen del Rey Mesías aparece en todas partes del Antiguo Testamento, y los cristianos alaban a Cristo como Rey del universo. Pero la narrativa de hoy no deja lugar a dudas de que Jesús es un rey especial. Reinó desde la cruz, un instrumento de tortura que sirvió como su trono en medio del ridículo y las risas.
El episodio de los dos ladrones aparece sólo en el Evangelio de Lucas. El pecador penitente recibió la salvación a través del perdón de Jesús crucificado, y las palabras de Jesús mostraron con claridad que su muerte había abierto el camino a la salvación hoy. “La palabra paraíso era un término persa para describir un parque cerrado y fue utilizado en el Génesis para describir el Jardín del Edén. Los escritos hebreos posteriores consideraban el paraíso como un estado temporal de felicidad para los justos antes del juicio final. Este es el significado que tiene aquí la palabra.” (The Collegeville Bible Commentary. The Liturgical Press, 1988).
En aquel tiempo, la gente y los jefes se burlaban de Jesús diciendo: “ Ya que salvó a otros, que se salve a sí mismo para ver si es el Cristo de Dios, el Elegido”. Los soldados también se burlaban de él. Cuando le ofrecieron de su vino agridulce para que lo tomara le dijeron: “Si tú eres el Rey de los judíos, sálvate a ti mismo”. Porque había en lo alto de la cruz un letrero que decía: “Este es el rey de los judíos”. Uno de los malhechores
crucificado, insultándolo, le dijo: “¿Así que tú eres el Cristo? Entonces sálvate tú y sálvanos también a nosotros”. Pero el otro le reprendió diciéndole: “¿No temes a Dios, tú que estás en el mismo suplicio? Nosotros lo tenemos merecido, por eso
pagamos nuestros crímenes. Pero él no ha hecho nada malo”. Y añadió: “Jesús, acuérdate de mí cuando llegues a tu Reino”. Respondió Jesús: “Realmente te digo que hoy mismo estarás conmigo en el Paraíso”.
La lectura de hoy nos presenta tres ideas importantes:
● La celebración litúrgica de Cristo Rey destaca la tensión
entre el rey pobre y sufriente y la gloria del rey escatológico (fin de los tiempos). ¡El Reino de Dios ya está aquí, pero aún queda por ser revelado en su plenitud!
● Jesús acogerá consigo a cuantos le reconocen humildemente como su único rey y Señor.
● Jesús no se ajusta a los esquemas tradicionales de la realeza. Su Reino no es de poder sobre los demás, sino de compasión y comunión con todos.
