18 we officially dedicated the
Angel Wing which this tremen-
dous gift allowed us to build.
The Third Annual Heritage Fes-
tival on Oct 25 sponsored by
the Hispanic Honor Society was
bigger and better than the last
two celebrations. Please check
out our website for pictures of
all these events and other
school activities.
During the coming two months
before we end the first semes-
ter of the year, we will start our
boys & girls basketball season,
hold an open house for pro-
spective students & parents and
hold a number of masses and
prayer services. Please check
our school calendar for dates or

vices.
Finally, I urge you to continue
to give the support and encour-
agement to your students that
you so often do. As we ap-
proach the end of the semester
and we get into the holiday spir-

Greetings From San Miguel High
School.
We continue to be a place
where there is lots of great
teaching & learning, lots of great
activity and events that nurture
the mind, body and tend to our
spiritual well-being.
To date we have already had
twelve acceptance letters to
colleges and universities for our
senior class. We’ve even had
one senior flown to Holy Cross
University, all expenses paid, for
a school visit in hopes that he
would select their school as the
place where he pursues his col-
lege education. As you will read
from the counselor section of
the newsletter, we are asking
seniors to continue over the
next couple of months to work
on college applications.
As we close out the month of
October, we will have our soc-
cer team traveling to Phoenix
for the first round of the state
championship playoffs. This is a
great achievement by our soccer
team and only the second time
in school history they have quali-
fied for state...great job!
The end of October also
brought a huge celebration as
we officially dedicated the Angel
Charity Wing of the Click Stu-
dent and Family Center. Some of
you may recall that during the
fall of 2010, the Angel Charity
for Children awarded $575,000
to San Miguel High School with a

MALOKAI from Mrs. Brady
MALOKAI is a Yaqui word
meaning altogether. Bringing
our school community together
is the focus of the newest stu-
dent organization on campus
this year. The group was an
outgrowth of a junior year so-
cial justice project done by now
senior, Alina Valle. Her project
focus was on the many forms of
bullying, its effect on students
and ways to combat bullying.
The first project MALOKAI un-
dertook was Respect Life Week
in October. Working with the
Lasallian Youth group, MALO-
KAI presented a weeklong look
at different types of bullying
and what we, as a community,
can do to respect each other.
The topics of the week included
respect for the dignity of oth-
ers, cyberbullying, physical and
emotional forms of bullying
and name calling. The week
ended with a beautiful prayer
service written and conducted
by Lasallian Youth using the
Stations of the Cross as a way
to see how Jesus handled the
name calling and abuse he
suffered.
MALOKAI’s second project
continues the bullying project
by taking the presentations to
the Diocese of Tucson’s Youth
Fest October 29. The group will
be presenting, in English and
Spanish, to almost 400 high
school and junior high school
students the message that it is
our responsibility to protect
the dignity of each other and
that there are ways to combat
bullying.
In November, MALOKAI shifts
its focus to highlighting Black
saints as the Diocese is cele-
brating Black Catholic History
Month. MALOKAI looks forward
to continuing the goal of bring-
ing together our community as
one community working for the
glory of God.

Morning tardiness continues to be a
problem at San Miguel. Please make
sure that your child arrives to school
on time. Sometimes it is not the fault
of the student, but they suffer the con-
sequences anyway. The only excuse for
morning tardiness is an appointment
with a doctor or dentist. Morning traf-
fic is not a valid excuse. Perhaps start-
ing earlier in the morning would solve
some of these tardiness issues. Lunch
detention is assigned for those students
arriving late. Students should work on
schoolwork during lunch detention.
Parental contact is usually made by email
or by text messaging during this time.
Students should be in their seat in their
classroom before 7:45 AM. Late stu-
dents should sign in the book in the of-
fice. Behavior, in general continues to be
excellent. The problem of gum on campus
seems to be less of a problem this year. Stu-
dents who have reached ten tardies during
the semester are included on the ineligible
list and they are assigned the duty of putting
away chairs in the gym after assemblies.

From the Registrar
On Tuesday, Oct. 25, San Miguel High School's Spanish department and the Hispanic Honor Society organized the school's third annual Heritage Festival. The purpose of the festival is to introduce the Tucson community and San Miguel students to cultures from around the world that they might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience. Each of San Miguel’s Spanish classes “adopted” a culture and set up a booth at the festi-val showcasing the customs, foods, dress and traditions of that culture. Every year the festival has grown, as has the enthusiasm of our students to make it a great experience for everyone. However, the festival wouldn't be successful without the help of the San Miguel community. We would like thank all parents who attended the event or supported their children to make it a rousing success. We look forward to seeing everyone again at the 2012 festi-val.
